Rotundus: triangulations, Chebyshev polynomials, and Pfaffians
Published in Math. Intelligencer 40 (2018), no. 3, 45-50 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study a cyclically invariant polynomial which is an analog of the classical tridiagonal determinant usually called the continuant. We prove that this polynomial can be calculated as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix. We consider the corresponding Diophantine equation and prove an analog of a famous result due to Conway and Coxeter. We also observe that Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind arise as Pfaffians.

The critical group of the Kneser graph on $2$-subsets of an $n$-element set
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications (2018) Volume 546, Pages 154-168 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we compute the critical group of the Kneser graph $KG(n,2)$. This is equivalent to computing the Smith normal form of a Laplacian matrix of this graph.

Counting Planar Eulerian Orientations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 71 (2018): 73-98 • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the paper of Bonichon, Bousquet-Mélou, Dorbec and Pennarun, we give a system of functional equations which characterise the ordinary generating function, $U(x),$ for the number of planar Eulerian orientations counted by edges. We also characterise the ogf $A(x)$, for 4-valent planar Eulerian orientations counted by vertices in a similar way. The latter problem is equivalent to the 6-vertex problem on a random lattice, widely studied in mathematical physics. While unable to solve these functional equations, they immediately provide polynomial-time algorithms for computing the coefficients of the generating function. From these algorithms we have obtained 100 terms for $U(x)$ and 90 terms for $A(x).$ Analysis of these series suggests that they both behave as $const\cdot (1 - μx)/\log(1 - μx),$ where we conjecture that $μ= 4π$ for Eulerian orientations counted by edges and $μ=4\sqrt{3}π$ for 4-valent Eulerian orientations counted by vertices.

Maximal Bootstrap Percolation Time on the Hypercube via Generalised Snake-in-the-Box
Published in 2018, Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 25 Paper 3.10 • View Publication • BIB
In $r$-neighbour bootstrap percolation, vertices (sites) of a graph $G$ are infected, round-by-round, if they have $r$ neighbours already infected. Once infected, they remain infected. An initial set of infected sites is said to percolate if every site is eventually infected. We determine the maximal percolation time for $r$-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the hypercube for all $r \geq 3$ as the dimension $d$ goes to infinity up to a logarithmic factor. Surprisingly, it turns out to be $\frac{2^d}{d}$, which is in great contrast with the value for $r=2$, which is quadratic in $d$, as established by Przykucki. Furthermore, we discover a link between this problem and a generalisation of the well-known Snake-in-the-Box problem.

Small simplicial complexes with prescribed torsion in homology
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $d \geq 2$ and $G$ a finite abelian group, define $T_d(G)$ to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ so that there exists a simplicial complex $X$ on $n$ vertices which has the torsion part of $H_{d - 1}(X)$ isomorphic to $G$. Here we establish an upper bound on $T_d(G)$ which matches the known lower bound up to a constant factor. That is, we prove that for every $d \geq 2$ there exist constants $c_d$ and $C_d$ so that for any finite abelian group $c_d(\log |G|)^{1/d} \leq T_d(G) \leq C_d(\log |G|)^{1/d}.$

Monomial tropical cones for multicriteria optimization
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present an algorithm to compute all $n$ nondominated points of a multicriteria discrete optimization problem with $d$ objectives using at most $\mathcal{O}(n^{\lfloor d/2 \rfloor})$ scalarizations. The method is similar to algorithms by Przybylski et al. (2010) and by Klamroth et al. (2015) with the same complexity. As a difference, our method employs a tropical convex hull computation, and it exploits a particular kind of duality which is special for the tropical cones arising. This duality can be seen as a generalization of the Alexander duality of monomial ideals.
Out-degree reducing partitions of digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ be a fixed integer. We determine the complexity of finding a $p$-partition $(V_1, \dots, V_p)$ of the vertex set of a given digraph such that the maximum out-degree of each of the digraphs induced by $V_i$, ($1\leq i\leq p$) is at least $k$ smaller than the maximum out-degree of $D$. We show that this problem is polynomial-time solvable when $p\geq 2k$ and ${\cal NP}$-complete otherwise. The result for $k=1$ and $p=2$ answers a question posed in \cite{bangTCS636}. We also determine, for all fixed non-negative integers $k_1,k_2,p$, the complexity of deciding whether a given digraph of maximum out-degree $p$ has a $2$-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that the digraph induced by $V_i$ has maximum out-degree at most $k_i$ for $i\in [2]$. It follows from this characterization that the problem of deciding whether a digraph has a 2-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that each vertex $v\in V_i$ has at least as many neighbours in the set $V_{3-i}$ as in $V_i$, for $i=1,2$ is ${\cal NP}$-complete. This solves a problem from \cite{kreutzerEJC24} on majority colourings.
Planar Tropical Cubic Curves of Any Genus, and Higher Dimensional Generalisations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the maximal values of Betti numbers of tropical subvarieties of a given dimension and degree in $\mathbb{TP}^n$. We provide a lower estimate for the maximal value of the top Betti number, which naturally depends on the dimension and degree, but also on the codimension. In particular, when the codimension is large enough, this lower estimate is larger than the maximal value of the corresponding Hodge number of complex algebraic projective varieties of the given dimension and degree. In the case of surfaces, we extend our study to all tropical homology groups. As a special case, we prove that there exist planar tropical cubic curves of genus $g$ for any non-negative integer $g$.
Independent Feedback Vertex Sets for Graphs of Bounded Diameter
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Near-Bipartiteness problem is that of deciding whether or not the vertices of a graph can be partitioned into sets $A$ and $B$, where $A$ is an independent set and $B$ induces a forest. The set $A$ in such a partition is said to be an independent feedback vertex set. Yang and Yuan proved that Near-Bipartiteness is polynomial-time solvable for graphs of diameter 2 and NP-complete for graphs of diameter 4. We show that Near-Bipartiteness is NP-complete for graphs of diameter 3, resolving their open problem. We also generalise their result for diameter 2 by proving that even the problem of computing a minimum independent feedback vertex is polynomial-time solvable for graphs of diameter 2.
Bipartite spanning sub(di)graphs induced by 2-partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given $2$-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ of the vertices of a (di)graph $G$, we study properties of the spanning bipartite subdigraph $B_G(V_1,V_2)$ of $G$ induced by those arcs/edges that have one end in each $V_i$. We determine, for all pairs of non-negative integers $k_1,k_2$, the complexity of deciding whether $G$ has a 2-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that each vertex in $V_i$ has at least $k_i$ (out-)neighbours in $V_{3-i}$. We prove that it is ${\cal NP}$-complete to decide whether a digraph $D$ has a 2-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that each vertex in $V_1$ has an out-neighbour in $V_2$ and each vertex in $V_2$ has an in-neighbour in $V_1$. The problem becomes polynomially solvable if we require $D$ to be strongly connected. We give a characterisation, based on the so-called strong component digraph of a non-strong digraph of the structure of ${\cal NP}$-complete instances in terms of their strong component digraph. When we want higher in-degree or out-degree to/from the other set the problem becomes ${\cal NP}$-complete even for strong digraphs. A further result is that it is ${\cal NP}$-complete to decide whether a given digraph $D$ has a $2$-partition $(V_1,V_2)$ such that $B_D(V_1,V_2)$ is strongly connected. This holds even if we require the input to be a highly connected eulerian digraph.
Independent Feedback Vertex Set for $P_5$-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The NP-complete problem Feedback Vertex Set is that of deciding whether or not it is possible, for a given integer $k\geq 0$, to delete at most $k$ vertices from a given graph so that what remains is a forest. The variant in which the deleted vertices must form an independent set is called Independent Feedback Vertex Set and is also NP-complete. In fact, even deciding if an independent feedback vertex set exists is NP-complete and this problem is closely related to the $3$-Colouring problem, or equivalently, to the problem of deciding whether or not a graph has an independent odd cycle transversal, that is, an independent set of vertices whose deletion makes the graph bipartite. We initiate a systematic study of the complexity of Independent Feedback Vertex Set for $H$-free graphs. We prove that it is NP-complete if $H$ contains a claw or cycle. Tamura, Ito and Zhou proved that it is polynomial-time solvable for $P_4$-free graphs. We show that it remains polynomial-time solvable for $P_5$-free graphs. We prove analogous results for the Independent Odd Cycle Transversal problem, which asks whether or not a graph has an independent odd cycle transversal of size at most $k$ for a given integer $k\geq 0$. Finally, in line with our underlying research aim, we compare the complexity of Independent Feedback Vertex Set for $H$-free graphs with the complexity of $3$-Colouring, Independent Odd Cycle Transversal and other related problems.
Tetravalent Vertex- and Edge-Transitive Graphs Over Doubled Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In order to complete (and generalize) results of Gardiner and Praeger on 4-valent symmetric graphs (European J. Combin, 15 (1994)) we apply the method of lifting automorphisms in the context of elementary-abelian covering projections. In particular, the vertex- and edge-transitive graphs whose quotient by a normal $p$-elementary abelian group of automorphisms, for $p$ an odd prime, is a cycle, are described in terms of cyclic and negacyclic codes. Specifically, the symmetry properties of such graphs are derived from certain properties of the generating polynomials of cyclic and negacyclic codes, that is, from divisors of $x^n \pm 1 \in {\mathbb Z}_p[x]$. As an application, a short and unified description of resolved and unresolved cases of Gardiner and Praeger are given.

The distance Laplacian spectral radius of unicyclic graphs
For a connected graph $G$, the distance Laplacian spectral radius of $G$ is the spectral radius of its distance Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(G)$ defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)=Tr(G)-D(G)$, where $Tr(G)$ is a diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$ and $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$. In this paper, we determine the unique graphs with maximum distance Laplacian spectral radius among unicyclic graphs.
A minimaj-preserving crystal on ordered multiset partitions
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 95 (2018) 96-115 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a crystal structure on the set of ordered multiset partitions, which recently arose in the pursuit of the Delta Conjecture. This conjecture was stated by Haglund, Remmel and Wilson as a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture. Various statistics on ordered multiset partitions arise in the combinatorial analysis of the Delta Conjecture, one of them being the minimaj statistic, which is a variant of the major index statistic on words. Our crystal has the property that the minimaj statistic is constant on connected components of the crystal. In particular, this yields another proof of the Schur positivity of the graded Frobenius series of the generalization $R_{n,k}$ due to Haglund, Rhoades and Shimozono of the coinvariant algebra $R_n$. The crystal structure also enables us to demonstrate the equidistributivity of the minimaj statistic with the major index statistic on ordered multiset partitions.

A note on minimal dispersion of point sets in the unit cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the dispersion of a point set, a notion closely related to the discrepancy. Given a real $r\in (0,1)$ and an integer $d\geq 2$, let $N(r,d)$ denote the minimum number of points inside the $d$-dimensional unit cube $[0,1]^d$ such that they intersect every axis-aligned box inside $[0,1]^d$ of volume greater than $r$. We prove an upper bound on $N(r,d)$, matching a lower bound of Aistleitner et al. up to a multiplicative constant depending only on $r$. This fully determines the rate of growth of $N(r,d)$ if $r\in(0,1)$ is fixed.

Morphisms of Butson classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the concept of a morphism from the set of Butson Hadamard matrices over kth roots of unity to the set of Butson matrices over $\ell$th roots of unity. As concrete examples of such morphisms, we describe tensor-product-like maps which reduce the order of the roots of unity appearing in a Butson matrix at the cost of increasing the dimension. Such maps can be constructed from Butson matrices with eigenvalues satisfying certain natural conditions. Our work unifies and generalises Turyn's construction of real Hadamard matrices from Butson matrices over the 4th roots and the work of Compton, Craigen and de Launey on `unreal' Butson matrices over the 6th roots. As a case study, we classify all morphisms from the set of $n \times n$ Butson matrices over kth roots of unity to the set of $2n\times 2n$ Butson matrices over $\ell$th roots of unity where $\ell < k$.

Combinatorial proofs of some properties of tangent and Genocchi numbers
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics,2018,13pages • View Publication • BIB
The tangent number $T_{2n+1}$ is equal to the number of increasing labelled complete binary trees with $2n+1$ vertices. This combinatorial interpretation immediately proves that $T_{2n+1}$ is divisible by $2^n$. However, a stronger divisibility property is known in the studies of Bernoulli and Genocchi numbers, namely, the divisibility of $(n+1)T_{2n+1}$ by $2^{2n}$. The traditional proofs of this fact need significant calculations. In the present paper, we provide a combinatorial proof of the latter divisibility by using the hook length formula for trees. Furthermore, our method is extended to $k$-ary trees, leading to a new generalization of the Genocchi numbers.

Multi-critical behaviour of 4-dimensional tensor models up to order 6
Published in Nucl. Phys. B 941 (2019) 600-635 • View Publication • BIB
Tensor models generalize the matrix-model approach to 2-dimensional quantum gravity to higher dimensions. Some models allowing a $1/N$ expansion have been explored, most of them generating branched-polymer geometries. Recently, enhancements yielding an additional 2d quantum-gravity (planar) phase and an intermediate regime of proliferating baby-universes have been found. It remains an open issue to find models escaping these lower dimensionality universality classes. Here we analyse the dominant regime and critical behaviour of a range of new models which are candidates for such effective geometries, in particular interactions based on the utility graph $K_{3,3}$. We find that, upon proper enhancement, the two-phase structure of a branched-polymer and a 2d gravity regime is the common case in $U(N)$-invariant rank $D=4$ tensor models of small orders. Not only the well known so-called necklace interactions but also $K_{3,3}$-type interactions turn out as the source for the planar regime. We give a systematic account of the enhancement scaling, the counting of leading-order diagrams and the multi-critical behaviour of a wide range of interactions, in particular for all order-6 interactions of rank 3 and 4. These findings support the claim of universality of such mixtures of branched-polymer and planar diagrams at criticality. In particular, this hints at the necessity to consider new ingredients, or interactions of higher order and rank, in order to obtain higher dimensional continuum geometry from tensor models.

Hypergroup Deformations of Semigroups
Published in Semigroup Forum (2019) 99, no. 1, 169-197 • View Publication • BIB
We view the well-known example of the dual of a countable compact hypergroup, motivated by the orbit space of p-adic integers by Dunkl and Ramirez (1975), as hypergroup deformation of the max semigroup structure on the linearly ordered set $\mathbb{Z}_+$ of the non-negative integers along the diagonal. This works as motivation for us to study hypergroups or semi convolution spaces arising from "max" semigroups or general commutative semigroups via hypergroup deformation on idempotents.
