We establish a strict asymptotic inequality between a class of graph partition problems on the sparse End\H{o]s-Rényi and random regular graph ensembles with the same average degree. Along the way, we establish a variational representation for the ground state energy for generalized mixed $p$-spin glasses and derive strict comparison inequalities for such models as the alphabet changes.
A universal tree-based network with the minimum number of reticulations

A tree-based network $\mathcal N$ on $X$ is universal if every rooted binary phylogenetic $X$-tree is a base tree for $\mathcal N$. Hayamizu and, independently, Zhang constructively showed that, for all positive integers $n$, there exists an universal tree-based network on $n$ leaves. For all $n$, Hayamizu's construction contains $Θ(n!)$ reticulations, while Zhang's construction contains $Θ(n^2)$ reticulations. A simple counting argument shows that an universal tree-based network has $Ω(n\log n)$ reticulations. With this in mind, Hayamizu as well as Steel posed the problem of determining whether or not such networks exists with $O(n\log n)$ reticulations. In this paper, we show that, for all $n$, there exists an universal tree-based network on $n$ leaves with $O(n\log n)$ reticulations.
Some applications of Rees products of posets to equivariant gamma-positivity

The Rees product of partially ordered sets was introduced by Björner and Welker. Using the theory of lexicographic shellability, Linusson, Shareshian and Wachs proved formulas, of significance in the theory of gamma-positivity, for the dimension of the homology of the Rees product of a graded poset $P$ with a certain $t$-analogue of the chain of the same length as $P$. Equivariant generalizations of these formulas are proven in this paper, when a group of automorphisms acts on $P$, and are applied to establish the Schur gamma-positivity of certain symmetric functions arising in algebraic and geometric combinatorics.

In this paper we survey wqo and bqo theory from the reverse mathematics perspective. We consider both elementary results (such as the equivalence of different definitions of the concepts, and basic closure properties) and more advanced theorems. The classification from the reverse mathematics viewpoint of both kinds of results provides interesting challenges, and we cover also recent advances on some long standing open problems.

Motivated by the Erdős-Faber-Lovász (EFL) conjecture for hypergraphs, we consider the list edge coloring of linear hypergraphs. We show that if the hyper-edge sizes are bounded between $i$ and $C_{i,ε} \sqrt{n}$ inclusive, then there is a list edge coloring using $(1 + ε) \frac{n}{i - 1}$ colors. The dependence on $n$ in the upper bound is optimal (up to the value of $C_{i,ε}$).
Composition problems for braids: Membership, Identity and Freeness
In this paper we investigate the decidability and complexity of problems related to braid composition. While all known problems for a class of braids with three strands, $B_3$, have polynomial time solutions we prove that a very natural question for braid composition, the membership problem, is NP-complete for braids with only three strands. The membership problem is decidable in NP for $B_3$, but it becomes harder for a class of braids with more strands. In particular we show that fundamental problems about braid compositions are undecidable for braids with at least five strands, but decidability of these problems for $B_4$ remains open. Finally we show that the freeness problem for semigroups of braids from $B_3$ is also decidable in NP.
The paper introduces a few challenging algorithmic problems about topological braids opening new connections between braid groups, combinatorics on words, complexity theory and provides solutions for some of these problems by application of several techniques from automata theory, matrix semigroups and algorithms.
Star 5-edge-colorings of subcubic multigraphs

The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $χ'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. A multigraph $G$ is star $k$-edge-colorable if $χ'_{s}(G)\le k$. Dvořák, Mohar and Šámal [Star chromatic index, J Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326] proved that every subcubic multigraph is star $7$-edge-colorable, and conjectured that every subcubic multigraph should be star $6$-edge-colorable. Kerdjoudj, Kostochka and Raspaud considered the list version of this problem for simple graphs and proved that every subcubic graph with maximum average degree less than $7/3$ is star list-$5$-edge-colorable. It is known that a graph with maximum average degree $14/5$ is not necessarily star $5$-edge-colorable. In this paper, we prove that every subcubic multigraph with maximum average degree less than $12/5$ is star $5$-edge-colorable.
A new family of MRD-codes
We introduce a family of linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{2n})$ arising from maximum scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q^{n})$. For $n=3,4$ and for certain values of the parameters we show that these linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{2n})$ are maximum scattered and they yield new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$ for $q>2$ and with parameters $(8,8,q;7)$ for $q$ odd.

In this paper, we find upper bounds on the open packing and $k$-limited packing numbers with emphasis on the cases $k=1$ and $k=2$. We solve the problem of characterizing all connected graphs on $n$ vertices with $ρ_{o}(G)=n/δ(G)$ which was presented in 2015 by Hamid and Saravanakumar. Also, by establishing a relation between the $k$-limited packing number and double domination number we improve two upper bounds given by Chellali and Haynes in 2005.

For the random interval partition of $[0,1]$ generated by the uniform stick-breaking scheme known as GEM$(1)$, let $u_k$ be the probability that the first $k$ intervals created by the stick-breaking scheme are also the first $k$ intervals to be discovered in a process of uniform random sampling of points from $[0,1]$. Then $u_k$ is a renewal sequence. We prove that $u_k$ is a rational linear combination of the real numbers $1, ζ(2), \ldots, ζ(k)$ where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta function, and show that $u_k$ has limit $1/3$ as $k \to \infty$. Related results provide probabilistic interpretations of some multiple zeta values in terms of a Markov chain derived from the interval partition. This Markov chain has the structure of a weak record chain. Similar results are given for the GEM$(θ)$ model, with beta$(1,θ)$ instead of uniform stick-breaking factors, and for another more algebraic derivation of renewal sequences from the Riemann zeta function.
The application of representation theory in directed strongly regular graphs

The concept of directed strongly regular graphs (DSRG) was introduced by Duval in 1988 \cite{A}.In the present paper,we use representation theory of finite groups in order to investigate the directed strongly regular Cayley graphs. We first show that a Cayley graph $\mathcal{C}(G,S)$ is not a directed strongly regular graph if $S$ is a union of some conjugate classes of $G$.This generalizes an earlier result of Leif K.Jørgensen \cite{J1} on abelian groups.Secondly,by using induced representations,we have a look at the Cayley graph $\mathcal{C}(N\rtimes_θH, N_1\times H_1)$ with $N_1\subseteq N$ and $H_1\subseteq H$,determining its characteristic polynomial and its minimal polynomial.Based on this result,we generalize the semidirect product method of Art M. Duval and Dmitri Iourinski in \cite{D} and obtain a larger family of directed strongly regular graphs. Finally,we construct some directed strongly regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, which partially generalize the earlier results of Mikhail Klin,Akihiro Munemasa,Mikhail Muzychuk, and Paul Hermann Zieschang in \cite{K1}.By using character theory,we also give the characterization of directed strongly regular Cayley graphs $\mathcal{C}(D_n,X\cup Xa)$ with $X\cap X^{(-1)}=\emptyset$.
On the Falk invariant of hyperplane arrangements attached to gain graphs
The fundamental group of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space is an important topological invariant. The third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group was called Falk invariant of the arrangement since Falk gave the first formula and asked to give a combinatorial interpretation. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for the Falk invariant of hyperplane arrangements attached to certain gain graphs.
$(an+b)$-color compositions

For $a,b\in\mathbb{N}_0$, we consider $(an+b)$-color compositions of a positive integer $ν$ for which each part of size $n$ admits $an+b$ colors. We study these compositions from the enumerative point of view and give a formula for the number of $(an+b)$-color compositions of $ν$ with $k$ parts. Our formula is obtained in two different ways: 1) by means of algebraic properties of partial Bell polynomials, and 2) through a bijection to a certain family of weak compositions that we call domino compositions. We also discuss two cases when $b$ is negative and give corresponding combinatorial interpretations.
Asymptotics of Pattern Avoidance in the Klazar Set Partition and Permutation-Tuple Settings

We consider asymptotics of set partition pattern avoidance in the sense of Klazar. Our main result derives the asymptotics of the number of set partitions avoiding a given set partition within an exponential factor, which leads to a classification of possible growth rates of set partition pattern classes. We further define a notion of permutation-tuple avoidance, which generalizes notions of Aldred et al. and the usual permutation pattern setting, and similarly determine the number of permutation-tuples avoiding a given tuple to within an exponential factor.
Combinatorial properties of triplet covers for binary trees
It is a classical result that an unrooted tree $T$ having positive real-valued edge lengths and no vertices of degree two can be reconstructed from the induced distance between each pair of leaves. Moreover, if each non-leaf vertex of $T$ has degree 3 then the number of distance values required is linear in the number of leaves. A canonical candidate for such a set of pairs of leaves in $T$ is the following: for each non-leaf vertex $v$, choose a leaf in each of the three components of $T-v$, group these three leaves into three pairs, and take the union of this set over all choices of $v$. This forms a so-called 'triplet cover' for $T$. In the first part of this paper we answer an open question (from 2012) by showing that the induced leaf-to-leaf distances for any triplet cover for $T$ uniquely determine $T$ and its edge lengths. We then investigate the finer combinatorial properties of triplet covers. In particular, we describe the structure of triplet covers that satisfy one or more of the following properties of being minimal, 'sparse', and 'shellable'.
Spanning universality in random graphs

A graph is said to be $\mathcal{H}(n, Δ)$-universal if it contains every graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $Δ$. Using a `matching-based' embedding technique introduced by Alon and Füredi, Dellamonica, Kohayakawa, Rödl and Ruciński showed that the random graph $G_{n,p}$ is asymptotically almost surely $\mathcal{H}(n, Δ)$-universal for $p = \tilde Ω(n^{-1/Δ})$ - a threshold for the property that every subset of $Δ$ vertices has a common neighbour. This bound has become a benchmark in the field and many subsequent results on embedding spanning structures of maximum degree $Δ$ in random graphs are proven only up to this threshold. We take a step towards overcoming limitations of former techniques by showing that $G_{n,p}$ is almost surely $\mathcal{H}(n, Δ)$-universal for $p = \tilde Ω(n^{- 1/(Δ-1/2)})$.
The Tu--Deng Conjecture holds almost surely

The Tu--Deng Conjecture is concerned with the sum of digits $w(n)$ of $n$ in base~$2$ (the Hamming weight of the binary expansion of $n$) and states the following: assume that $k$ is a positive integer and $1\leq t<2^k-1$. Then \[\Bigl \lvert\Bigl\{(a,b)\in\bigl\{0,\ldots,2^k-2\bigr\}^2:a+b\equiv t\bmod 2^k-1, w(a)+w(b)<k\Bigr\}\Bigr \rvert\leq 2^{k-1}.\]
We prove that the Tu--Deng Conjecture holds almost surely in the following sense: the proportion of $t\in[1,2^k-2]$ such that the above inequality holds approaches $1$ as $k\rightarrow\infty$.
Moreover, we prove that the Tu--Deng Conjecture implies a conjecture due to T.~W.~Cusick concerning the sum of digits of $n$ and $n+t$.
Algorithms for Positive Semidefinite Factorization

This paper considers the problem of positive semidefinite factorization (PSD factorization), a generalization of exact nonnegative matrix factorization. Given an $m$-by-$n$ nonnegative matrix $X$ and an integer $k$, the PSD factorization problem consists in finding, if possible, symmetric $k$-by-$k$ positive semidefinite matrices $\{A^1,...,A^m\}$ and $\{B^1,...,B^n\}$ such that $X_{i,j}=\text{trace}(A^iB^j)$ for $i=1,...,m$, and $j=1,...n$. PSD factorization is NP-hard. In this work, we introduce several local optimization schemes to tackle this problem: a fast projected gradient method and two algorithms based on the coordinate descent framework. The main application of PSD factorization is the computation of semidefinite extensions, that is, the representations of polyhedrons as projections of spectrahedra, for which the matrix to be factorized is the slack matrix of the polyhedron. We compare the performance of our algorithms on this class of problems. In particular, we compute the PSD extensions of size $k=1+ \lceil \log_2(n) \rceil$ for the regular $n$-gons when $n=5$, $8$ and $10$. We also show how to generalize our algorithms to compute the square root rank (which is the size of the factors in a PSD factorization where all factor matrices $A^i$ and $B^j$ have rank one) and completely PSD factorizations (which is the special case where the input matrix is symmetric and equality $A^i=B^i$ is required for all $i$).
