A Set of Sequences of Complexity $2n+1$
Published in In: Brlek S., Dolce F., Reutenauer C., Vandomme É. (eds) Combinatorics on Words. WORDS 2017. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 10432. Springer, Cham • View Publication • BIB
We prove the existence of a ternary sequence of factor complexity $2n+1$ for any given vector of rationally independent letter frequencies. Such sequences are constructed from an infinite product of two substitutions according to a particular Multidimensional Continued Fraction algorithm. We show that this algorithm is conjugate to a well-known one, the Selmer algorithm. Experimentations (Baldwin, 1992) suggest that their second Lyapunov exponent is negative which presages finite balance properties.

Bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over metacyclic groups of odd prime-power order
A graph $Γ$ is a bi-Cayley graph over a group $G$ if $G$ is a semiregular group of automorphisms of $Γ$ having two orbits. Let $G$ be a non-abelian metacyclic $p$-group for an odd prime $p$, and let $Γ$ be a connected bipartite bi-Cayley graph over the group $G$. In this paper, we prove that $G$ is normal in the full automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$ of $Γ$ when $G$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$. As an application, we classify half-arc-transitive bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over the group $G$ of valency less than $2p$. Furthermore, it is shown that there are no semisymmetric and no arc-transitive bipartite bi-Cayley graphs over the group $G$ of valency less than $p$.

High Order Random Walks: Beyond Spectral Gap
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study high order random walks in high dimensional expanders; namely, in complexes which are local spectral expanders. Recent works have studied the spectrum of high order walks and deduced fast mixing. However, the spectral gap of high order walks is inherently small, due to natural obstructions that do not happen for walks on expander graphs. In this work we go beyond spectral gap, and relate the shrinkage of a $k$-cochain by the walk operator, to its structure under the assumption of local spectral expansion. A simplicial complex is called an one-sided local spectral expander, if its links have large spectral gaps and a two-sided local spectral expander if its links have large two-sided spectral gaps. We show two Decomposition Theorems (one per one-sided/two-sided local spectral assumption) : For every $k$-cochain $φ$ defined on an $n$-dimensional local spectral expander, there exists a decomposition of $φ$ into `orthogonal' parts that are, roughly speaking, the `projections' on the $j$-dimensional cochains for $0 \leq j \leq k$. The random walk shrinks each of these parts by a factor of $\frac{k+1-j}{k+2}$ plus an error term that depends on the spectral expansion. %Our two Decomposition Theorems differ in their assumptions on the local spectral gaps - we derive different Decomposition Theorems for the cases of one-sided local spectral gap and two-sided local spectral gap.

Multi-splits and tropical linear spaces from nested matroids
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 61.3 (2019), 661-685 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we present an explicit combinatorial description of a special class of facets of the secondary polytopes of hypersimplices. These facets correspond to polytopal subdivisions called multi-splits. We show a relation between the cells in a multi-split of the hypersimplex and nested matroids. Moreover, we get a description of all multi-splits of a product of simplices. Additionally, we present a computational result to derive explicit lower bounds on the number of facets of secondary polytopes of hypersimplices.

On the metric dimension of incidence graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A resolving set for a graph $Γ$ is a collection of vertices $S$, chosen so that for each vertex $v$, the list of distances from $v$ to the members of $S$ uniquely specifies $v$. The metric dimension $μ(Γ)$ is the smallest size of a resolving set for $Γ$. We consider the metric dimension of two families of incidence graphs: incidence graphs of symmetric designs, and incidence graphs of symmetric transversal designs (i.e. symmetric nets). These graphs are the bipartite distance-regular graphs of diameter $3$, and the bipartite, antipodal distance-regular graphs of diameter $4$, respectively. In each case, we use the probabilistic method in the manner used by Babai to obtain bounds on the metric dimension of strongly regular graphs, and are able to show that $μ(Γ)=O(\sqrt{n}\log n)$ (where $n$ is the number of vertices).

On some graph densities in locally dense graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kohayakawa-Nagle-Rödl-Schacht conjecture roughly states that every sufficiently large locally $d$-dense graph $G$ on $n$ vertices must contain at least $(1-o(1))d^{|E(H)|}n^{|V(H)|}$ copies of a fixed graph $H$. Despite its important connections to both quasirandomness and Ramsey theory, there are very few examples known to satisfy the conjecture. We provide various new classes of graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Firstly, we prove that adding an edge to a cycle or a tree produces graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Secondly, we prove that a class of graphs obtained by gluing complete multipartite graphs in a tree-like way satisfies the conjecture. We also prove an analogous result with odd cycles replacing complete multipartite graphs.

Frames, $A$-paths and the Erdős-Pósa property
Published • View Publication • BIB
A key feature of Simonovits' proof of the classic Erdős-Pósa theorem is a simple subgraph of the host graph, a frame, that determines the outcome of the theorem. We transfer this frame technique to $A$-paths. With it we deduce a simple proof of Gallai's theorem, although with a worse bound, and we verify the Erdős-Pósa property for long and for even $A$-paths. We also show that even $A$-paths do not have the edge-Erdős-Pósa property.

Crystals and Schur $P$-positive expansions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new characterization of Littlewood-Richardson-Stembridge tableaux for Schur $P$-functions by using the theory of $\mf{q}(n)$-crystals. We also give alternate proofs of the Schur $P$-expansion of a skew Schur function due to Ardila and Serrano, and the Schur expansion of a Schur $P$-function due to Stembridge using the associated crystal structures.

Contact graphs of ball packings
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 145, 2020, 323-340 • View Publication • BIB
A contact graph of a packing of closed balls is a graph with balls as vertices and pairs of tangent balls as edges. We prove that the average degree of the contact graph of a packing of balls (with possibly different radii) in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is not greater than $13.92$. We also find new upper bounds for the average degree of contact graphs in $\mathbb{R}^4$ and $\mathbb{R}^5$.

Counting Numerical Semigroups
Published in Amer. Math. Monthly 124 (2017), no. 9, 862-875 • View Publication • BIB
A numerical semigroup is an additive submonoid of the natural numbers with finite complement. The size of the complement is called the genus of the semigroup. How many numerical semigroups have genus equal to $g$? We outline Zhai's proof of a conjecture of Bras-Amorós that this sequence has Fibonacci-like growth. We now know that this sequence asymptotically grows as fast as the Fibonacci numbers, but it is still not known whether it is nondecreasing. We discuss this and other open problems. We highlight the many contributions made by undergraduates to problems in this area.

Gelfand-Kirillov Dimensions of Highest Weight Harish-Chandra Modules for $SU(p,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $ (G,K) $ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric pair of non-compact type with $G=SU(p,q)$, and let $ λ$ be an integral weight such that the simple highest weight module $ L(λ) $ is a Harish-Chandra $ (\mathfrak{g},K) $-module. We give a combinatoric algorithm for the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of $ L(λ) $. This enables us to prove that the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of $ L(λ) $ decreases as the integer $ \langleλ+ρ,β^\vee\rangle $ increases, where $ρ$ is the half sum of positive roots and $β$ is the maximal noncompact root. As a byproduct, we obtain a description on the associated variety of $ L(λ) $.

The algebraic Bethe Ansatz and combinatorial trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present in this paper a comprehensive introduction to the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, taking as examples the six-vertex model with periodic and non-periodic boundary conditions. We propose a diagrammatic representation of the commutation relations used in the algebraic Bethe Ansatz, so that the action of the transfer matrix in the nth excited state gives place to labeled combinatorial trees. The analysis of these combinatorial trees provides in a straightforward way the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the transfer matrix, as well as the respective Bethe Ansatz equations. Several identities between the R-matrix elements can also be derived from the symmetry of these diagrams regarding the permutation of their labels. This combinatorial approach gives some insights about how the algebraic Bethe Ansatz works, which can be valuable for non-experts readers.
Generalized minimum distance functions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 50 (2019), no. 3, 317-346 • View Publication • BIB
Using commutative algebra methods we study the generalized minimum distance function (gmd function) and the corresponding generalized footprint function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring over a field. The number of solutions that a system of homogeneous polynomials has in any given finite set of projective points is expressed as the degree of a graded ideal. If $\mathbb{X}$ is a set of projective points over a finite field and $I$ is its vanishing ideal, we show that the gmd function and the Vasconcelos function of $I$ are equal to the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight of the corresponding Reed-Muller-type code $C_\mathbb{X}(d)$ of degree $d$. We show that the generalized footprint function of $I$ is a lower bound for the $r$-th generalized Hamming weight of $C_\mathbb{X}(d)$. Then we present some applications to projective nested cartesian codes. To give applications of our lower bound to algebraic coding theory, we show an interesting integer inequality. Then we show an explicit formula and a combinatorial formula for the second generalized Hamming weight of an affine cartesian code.

The stringy Euler number of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties and the Mavlyutov duality
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that minimal models of nondegenerated hypersufaces defined by Laurent polynomials with a $d$-dimensional Newton polytope $Δ$ are Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ if and only if the Fine interior of $Δ$ consists of a single lattice point. We give a combinatorial formula for computing the stringy Euler number of $X$. This formula allows to test mirror symmetry in cases when $Δ$ is not a reflexive polytope. In particular we apply this formula to pairs of lattice polytopes $(Δ, Δ^{\vee})$ that appear in the Mavlyutov's generalization of the polar duality for reflexive polytopes. Some examples of Mavlyutov's dual pairs $(Δ, Δ^{\vee})$ show that the stringy Euler numbers of the corresponding Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ and $X^{\vee}$ may not satisfy the expected topological mirror symmetry test: $e_{\rm st}(X) = (-1)^{d-1} e_{\rm st}(X^{\vee})$. This shows the necessity of an additional condition on Mavlyutov's pairs $(Δ, Δ^\vee)$.
Ramsey expansions of metrically homogeneous graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (132), 2026 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate Ramsey expansions, the coherent extension property for partial isometries (EPPA), and the existence of a stationary independence relation for all classes of metrically homogeneous graphs from Cherlin's catalogue. We show that, with the exception of tree-like graphs, all metric spaces in the catalogue have precompact Ramsey expansions (or lifts) with the expansion property. With two exceptions we can also characterise the existence of a stationary independence relation and coherent EPPA. Our results are a contribution to Nešetřil's classification programme of Ramsey classes and can be seen as empirical evidence of the recent convergence in techniques employed to establish the Ramsey property, the expansion property, EPPA and the existence of a stationary independence relation. At the heart of our proof is a canonical way of completing edge-labelled graphs to metric spaces in Cherlin's classes. The existence of such a ``completion algorithm'' then allows us to apply several strong results in the areas that imply EPPA or the Ramsey property. The main results have numerous consequences for the automorphism groups of the Fraisse limits of the classes. As corollaries, we prove amenability, unique ergodicity, existence of universal minimal flows, ample generics, small index property, 21-Bergman property and Serre's property (FA).
The smallest singular value of a shifted $d$-regular random square matrix
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields, 2018 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a lower bound on the smallest singular value of a random $d$-regular matrix, that is, the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph. More precisely, let $C_1<d< c_1 n/\log^2 n$ and let $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $0/1$-valued square $n\times n$ matrices such that each row and each column of a matrix $M\in \mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ has exactly $d$ ones. Let $M$ be uniformly distributed on $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$. Then the smallest singular value $s_{n} (M)$ of $M$ is greater than $c_2 n^{-6}$ with probability at least $1-C_2\log^2 d/\sqrt{d}$, where $c_1$, $c_2$, $C_1$, and $C_2$ are absolute positive constants independent of any other parameters.

The Junta Method for Hypergraphs and the Erdős-Chvátal Simplex Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Numerous problems in extremal hypergraph theory ask to determine the maximal size of a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices that does not contain an `enlarged' copy $H^+$ of a fixed hypergraph $H$. These include well-known problems such as the Erdős-Sós `forbidding one intersection' problem and the Frankl-Füredi `special simplex' problem. We present a general approach to such problems, using a `junta approximation method' that originates from analysis of Boolean functions. We prove that any $H^+$-free hypergraph is essentially contained in a `junta' -- a hypergraph determined by a small number of vertices -- that is also $H^+$-free, which effectively reduces the extremal problem to an easier problem on juntas. Using this approach, we obtain, for all $C<k<n/C$, a complete solution of the extremal problem for a large class of $H$'s, which includes the aforementioned problems, and solves them for a large new set of parameters. We apply our method also to the 1974 Erdős-Chvátal simplex conjecture, which asserts that for any $d < k \leq \frac{d}{d+1}n$, the maximal size of a $k$-uniform family that does not contain a $d$-simplex (i.e., $d+1$ sets with empty intersection such that any $d$ of them intersect) is ${{n-1}\choose{k-1}}$. We prove the conjecture for all $d$ and $k$, provided $n>n_0(d)$.

Generation and analysis of lamplighter programs
We consider a programming language based on the lamplighter group that uses only composition and iteration as control structures. We derive generating functions and counting formulas for this language and special subsets of it, establishing lower and upper bounds on the growth rate of semantically distinct programs. Finally, we show how to sample random programs and analyze the distribution of runtimes induced by such sampling.

Macdonald cumulants, $G$-inversion polynomials and $G$-parking functions
Published in European J. Combin., 75, 172-194, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a combinatorial formula for Macdonald cumulants which generalizes the celebrated formula of Haglund for Macdonald polynomials. We provide several applications of our formula. Firstly, it gives a new, constructive proof of a strong factorization property of Macdonald polynomials proven recently by the author of this paper. Moreover it proves that Macdonald cumulants are $q,t$--positive in the monomial and in the fundamental quasisymmetric bases. Furthermore, we use our formula to prove the recent higher-order Macdonald positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the Schur polynomials indexed by hooks. Our combinatorial formula relates Macdonald cumulants to the generating function of $G$-parking functions, or equivalently to a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomials.

Lichiardopol's conjecture on disjoint cycles in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2010, N. Lichiardopol conjectured for $q \geq 3$ and $k \geq 1$ that any tournament with minimum out-degree at least $(q-1)k-1$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles of length $q$. We prove this conjecture for $q \geq 5$. Since it is already known to hold for $q\le4$, this completes the proof of the conjecture.
