The confirmation of a conjecture on disjoint cycles in a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove the following conjecture proposed by Gould, Hirohata and Keller [Discrete Math. submitted]: Let $G$ be a graph of sufficiently large order. If $σ_t(G) \geq 2kt - t + 1$ for any two integers $k \geq 2$ and $t \geq 5$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles.

Bijections for inversion sequences, ascent sequences and 3-nonnesting set partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Set partitions avoiding $k$-crossing and $k$-nesting have been extensively studied from the aspects of both combinatorics and mathematical biology. By using the generating tree technique, the obstinate kernel method and Zeilberger's algorithm, Lin confirmed a conjecture due independently to the author and Martinez-Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length 3 and enhanced 3-nonnesting partitions have the same cardinality. In this paper, we provide a bijective proof of this conjecture. Our bijection also enables us to provide a new bijective proof of a conjecture posed by Duncan and Steingrímsson, which was proved by the author via an intermediate structure of growth diagrams for $01$-fillings of Ferrers shapes.

The Cat and the Noisy Mouse
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a variant of a pursuit and evasion game studied independently by Britnell and Wildon as well as Haslegrave. In their game, a cat has to catch an invisible mouse that moves along the edges of some graph $G$. In our version, the cat receives partial information about its distance to the mouse, and we show that the cat has a winning strategy if and only if $G$ is a forest. Seager proposed a similar game with complete distance information whose rules cause some small yet important differences to the game we consider.

Computing spectral bounds of the Heisenberg ferromagnet from geometric considerations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a polynomial-time algorithm for computing upper bounds on some of the smaller energy eigenvalues in a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic Heisenberg model with any graph $G$ for the underlying interactions. An important ingredient is the connection between Heisenberg models and the symmetric products of $G$. Our algorithms for computing upper bounds are based on generalized diameters of graphs. Computing the upper bounds amounts to solving the minimum assignment problem on $G$, which has well-known polynomial-time algorithms from the field of combinatorial optimization. We also study the possibility of computing the lower bounds on some of the smaller energy eigenvalues of Heisenberg models. This amounts to estimating the isoperimetric inequalities of the symmetric product of graphs. By using connections with discrete Sobolev inequalities, we show that this can be performed by considering just the vertex-induced subgraphs of $G$. If our conjecture for a polynomial time approximation algorithm to solve the edge-isoperimetric problem holds, then our proposed method of estimating the energy eigenvalues via approximating the edge-isoperimetric properties of vertex-induced subgraphs will yield a polynomial time algorithm for estimating the smaller energy eigenvalues of the Heisenberg ferromagnet.
Trees, homology, and automorphism groups of RAAGs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the homology of an explicit finite-index subgroup of the automorphism group of a partially commutative group, in the case when its defining graph is a tree. More concretely, we give a lower bound on the first Betti number of this subgroup, based on the number and degree of a certain type of vertices, which we call deep. We then use combinatorial methods to analyze the average value of this Betti number, in terms of the size of the defining tree.

Further results on the expected hitting time, the cover cost and the related invariants of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A close relation between hitting times of the simple random walk on a graph, the Kirchhoff index, resistance-centrality, and related invariants of unicyclic graphs is displayed. Combining with the graph transformations and some other techniques, sharp upper and lower bounds on the cover cost (resp. reverse cover cost) of a vertex in an $n$-vertex unicyclic graph are determined. All the corresponding extremal graphs are identified, respectively.

Infinite families of 2-designs from GA_1(q) actions
Group action is a standard approach to obtain $t$-designs. In this approach, selecting a specific permutation group with a certain degree of transitivity or homogeneity and a proper set of base blocks is important for obtaining $t$-$(v, k, λ)$ designs with computable parameters $t, v, k$, and $λ$. The general affine group $\GA_1(q)$ is $2$-transitive on $\gf(q)$, and has relatively a small size. In this paper, we determine the parameters of a number of infinite families of $2$-designs obtained from the action of the group $\GA_1(q)$ on certain base blocks, and demonstrate that some of the $2$-designs give rise to linear codes with optimal or best parameters known. Open problems are also presented.

We prove that three spaces of importance in topological combinatorics are homeomorphic to closed balls: the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, the compactification of the space of electrical networks, and the cyclically symmetric amplituhedron.

Stanley sequences with odd character
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a set of integers containing no 3-term arithmetic progressions, one constructs a Stanley sequence by choosing integers greedily without forming such a progression. Independent Stanley sequences are a "well-structured" class of Stanley sequences with two main parameters: the character $λ(A)$ and the repeat factor $ρ(A)$. Rolnick conjectured that for every $λ\in \mathbb{N}_0\backslash\{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$, there exists an independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$ such that $λ(A) =λ$. This paper demonstrates that $λ(A) \not\in \{1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 15\}$ for any independent Stanley sequence $S(A)$.

A note on some variations of the $γ$-graph
For a graph $G$, the $γ$-graph of $G$, $G(γ)$, is the graph whose vertices correspond to the minimum dominating sets of $G$, and where two vertices of $G(γ)$ are adjacent if and only if their corresponding dominating sets in $G$ differ by exactly two adjacent vertices. In this paper, we present several variations of the $γ$-graph including those using identifying codes, locating-domination, total-domination, paired-domination, and the upper-domination number. For each, we show that for any graph $H$, there exist infinitely many graphs whose $γ$-graph variant is isomorphic to $H$.

In this paper, we study commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs whose attached association schemes are regular, and give a characterization of mixed arcs. As an application, we classify such digraphs of diameter 2.

The geometry of hyperbolic lines in polar spaces
In this paper we consider partial linear spaces induced on the point set of a polar space, but with as lines the hyperbolic lines of this polar space. We give some geometric characterizations of these and related spaces. The results have applications in group theory, in the theory of Lie algebras and in graph theory.
Enumerating Lambda Terms by Weighted Length of Their De Bruijn Representation
Published • View Publication • BIB
John Tromp introduced the so-called 'binary lambda calculus' as a way to encode lambda terms in terms of 0-1-strings using the de Bruijn representation along with a weighting scheme. Later, Grygiel and Lescanne conjectured that the number of binary lambda terms with $m$ free indices and of size $n$ (encoded as binary words of length $n$ and according to Tromp's weights) is $o(n^{-3/2} τ^{-n})$ for $τ\approx 1.963448\ldots$. We generalize the proposed notion of size and show that for several classes of lambda terms, including binary lambda terms with $m$ free indices, the number of terms of size $n$ is $Θ{n^{-3/2} ρ^{-n}}$ with some class dependent constant $ρ$, which in particular disproves the above mentioned conjecture. The methodology used is setting up the generating functions for the classes of lambda terms. These are infinitely nested radicals which are investigated then by a singularity analysis. We show further how some properties of random lambda terms can be analyzed and present a way to sample lambda terms uniformly at random in a very efficient way. This allows to generate terms of size more than one million within a reasonable time, which is significantly better than the samplers presented in the literature so far.
On the shape of random Pólya structures
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 341, Issue 4, April 2018, Pages 896-911 • View Publication • BIB
Panagiotou and Stufler recently proved an important fact on their way to establish the scaling limits of random Pólya trees: a uniform random Pólya tree of size $n$ consists of a conditioned critical Galton-Watson tree $C_n$ and many small forests, where with probability tending to one, as $n$ tends to infinity, any forest $F_n(v)$, that is attached to a node $v$ in $C_n$, is maximally of size $\vert F_n(v)\vert=O(\log n)$. Their proof used the framework of a Boltzmann sampler and deviation inequalities. In this paper, first, we employ a unified framework in analytic combinatorics to prove this fact with additional improvements for $\vert F_n(v)\vert$, namely $\vert F_n(v)\vert=Θ(\log n)$. Second, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the rational weights of these forests and the defining substitution process in terms of automorphisms associated to a given Pólya tree. Third, we derive the limit probability that for a random node $v$ the attached forest $F_n(v)$ is of a given size. Moreover, structural properties of those forests like the number of their components are studied. Finally, we extend all results to other Pólya structures.

Applying Parabolic Peterson: Affine Algebras and the Quantum Cohomology of the Grassmannian
Published in J. Comb. 10 (2019), no. 1, 129-162 • View Publication • BIB
The Peterson isomorphism relates the homology of the affine Grassmannian to the quantum cohomology of any flag variety. In the case of a partial flag, Peterson's map is only a surjection, and one needs to quotient by a suitable ideal on the affine side to map isomorphically onto the quantum cohomology. We provide a detailed exposition of this parabolic Peterson isomorphism in the case of the Grassmannian of m-planes in complex n-space, including an explicit recipe for doing quantum Schubert calculus in terms of the appropriate subset of non-commutative k-Schur functions. As an application, we recast Postnikov's affine approach to the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian as a consequence of parabolic Peterson by showing that the affine nilTemperley-Lieb algebra arises naturally when forming the requisite quotient of the homology of the affine Grassmannian.

Binary strings of length $n$ with $x$ zeros and longest $k$-runs of zeros
Published in Indian Journal of Mathematics, Vol. 61, No. 1, 2019, 111-139 • Search Publication
In this paper, we study $F_{n}(x,k)$, the number of binary strings of length $n$ containing $x$ zeros and a longest subword of $k$ zeros. A recurrence relation for $F_{n}(x,k)$ is derived. We expressed few known numbers like Fibonacci, triangular, number of binary strings of length $n$ without $r$-runs of ones and number of compositions of $n+1$ with largest summand $k+1$ in terms of $F_{n}(x,k).$ Similar results and applications were obtained for F$_{n}(x,k),$ the number of all palindromic binary strings of length $n$ containing $x$ zeros and longest $k$-runs of zeros.

Excluded minors for the class of split matroids
Split matroids form a minor-closed class of matroids, and are defined by placing conditions on the system of split hyperplanes in the matroid base polytope. They can equivalently be defined in terms of structural properties involving cyclic flats. We confirm a conjecture of Joswig and Schröter by proving an excluded-minor characterisation of the class of split matroids.
Covering and 2-degree-packing numbers in graphs
Published in Open Journal of Discrete Applied Mathematics-2024 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we give a relationship between the covering number of a simple graph $G$, $β(G)$, and a new parameter associated to $G$ which is called 2-degree-packing number of $G$, $ν_2(G)$. We prove that$$\lceil ν_{2}(G)/2\rceil\leqβ(G)\leqν_2(G)-1,$$ for any connected simple graph $G$, with $|E(G)|>ν_2(G)$, and we give a characterization of simple connected graphs which attains the inequalities.

Orderly generation of Butson Hadamard matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper Butson-type complex Hadamard matrices $\mathrm{BH}(n,q)$ of order $n$ and complexity $q$ are classified for small parameters by computer-aided methods. Our main results include the enumeration of $\mathrm{BH}(21,3)$, $\mathrm{BH}(16,4)$, and $\mathrm{BH}(14,6)$ matrices. There are exactly $72$, 1786763, and $167776$ such matrices, up to monomial equivalence. Additionally, we show an example of a $\mathrm{BH}(14,10)$ matrix for the first time, and show the nonexistence of $\mathrm{BH}(8,15)$, $\mathrm{BH}(11,q)$ for $q\in\{10,12,14,15\}$, and $\mathrm{BH}(13,10)$ matrices.
