On a Construction of Integrally Invertible Graphs and their Spectral Properties
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 532 (2017), 512-533 • View Publication • BIB
Godsil (1985) defined a graph to be invertible if it has a non-singular adjacency matrix whose inverse is diagonally similar to a nonnegative integral matrix; the graph defined by the last matrix is then the inverse of the original graph. In this paper we call such graphs positively invertible and introduce a new concept of a negatively invertible graph by replacing the adjective `nonnegative' by `nonpositive in Godsil's definition; the graph defined by the negative of the resulting matrix is then the negative inverse of the original graph. We propose new constructions of integrally invertible graphs (those with non-singular adjacency matrix whose inverse is integral) based on an operation of `bridging' a pair of integrally invertible graphs over subsets of their vertices, with sufficient conditions for their positive and negative invertibility. We also analyze spectral properties of graphs arising from bridging and derive lower bounds for their least positive eigenvalue. As an illustration we present a census of graphs with a unique 1-factor on $m\le 6$ vertices and determine their positive and negative invertibility.

Firefighting on trees and Cayley graphs
We study Hartnell's firefighter problem on infinite trees and characterise the branching number in terms of the firefighting game. Using our results about trees, we give a partial answer to a question of Martínez-Pedroza concerning firefighting on Cayley graphs.

Exponential random graphs behave like mixtures of stochastic block models
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the behavior of exponential random graphs in both the sparse and the dense regime. We show that exponential random graphs are approximate mixtures of graphs with independent edges whose probability matrices are critical points of an associated functional, thereby satisfying a certain matrix equation. In the dense regime, every solution to this equation is close to a block matrix, concluding that the exponential random graph behaves roughly like a mixture of stochastic block models. We also show existence and uniqueness of solutions to this equation for several families of exponential random graphs, including the case where the subgraphs are counted with positive weights and the case where all weights are small in absolute value. In particular, this generalizes some of the results in a paper by Chatterjee and Diaconis from the dense regime to the sparse regime and strengthens their bounds from the cut-metric to the one-metric.

The Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm and the diameter of Schreier graphs
Published in Groups Geom. Dyn., 13(4):1235--1253, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the number of iterations taken by the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for configurations coming from Schreier graphs is closely linked to the diameter of the graphs themselves: an upper bound is found for general Schreier graphs, and a lower bound holds for particular cases, such as for Schreier graphs with $G=\mbox{SL}_{n}({\mathbb F}_{q})$ ($q>2$) acting on $k$-tuples of vectors in ${\mathbb F}_{q}^{n}$; moreover, an exact expression is found in the case of Cayley graphs.

Bounding the number of common zeros of multivariate polynomials and their consecutive derivatives
Published • View Publication • BIB
We upper bound the number of common zeros over a finite grid of multivariate polynomials and an arbitrary finite collection of their consecutive Hasse derivatives (in a coordinate-wise sense). To that end, we make use of the tool from Gröbner basis theory known as footprint. Then we establish and prove extensions in this context of a family of well-known results in algebra and combinatorics. These include Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz, existence and uniqueness of Hermite interpolating polynomials over a grid, estimations on the parameters of evaluation codes with consecutive derivatives, and bounds on the number of zeros of a polynomial by DeMillo and Lipton, Schwartz, Zippel, and Alon and Füredi. As an alternative, we also extend the Schwartz-Zippel bound to weighted multiplicities and discuss its connection with our extension of the footprint bound.

On the classification of $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we study the classification of $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes. For some special cases $(k_1,k_2)$, by hand, we give a classification of $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes of length $n$ and type $4^{k_1}2^{k_2}$ satisfying a certain condition. Our exhaustive computer search completes the classification of $\mathbb{Z}_4$-codes of lengths up to $7$.

Partition algebras $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ with $2k>n$ and the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Assume $\mathsf{M}_n$ is the $n$-dimensional permutation module for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$, and let $\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k}$ be its $k$-fold tensor power. The partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ maps surjectively onto the centralizer algebra $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ for all $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$ and isomorphically when $n \ge 2k$. We describe the image of the surjection $Φ_{k,n}:\mathsf{P}_k(n) \to \mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ explicitly in terms of the orbit basis of $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ and show that when $2k > n$ the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$ is generated by a single essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{k,n}$, which is an orbit basis element. We obtain a presentation for $\mathsf{End}_{\mathsf{S}_n}(\mathsf{M}_n^{\otimes k})$ by imposing one additional relation, $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$, to the standard presentation of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ when $2k > n$. As a consequence, we obtain the fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$. We show under the natural embedding of the partition algebra $\mathsf{P}_n(n)$ into $\mathsf{P}_k(n)$ for $k \ge n$ that the essential idempotent $\mathsf{e}_{n,n}$ generates the kernel of $Φ_{k,n}$. Therefore, the relation $\mathsf{e}_{n,n} = 0$ can replace $\mathsf{e}_{k,n} = 0$ when $k \ge n$.

Packings in real projective spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper applies techniques from algebraic and differential geometry to determine how to best pack points in real projective spaces. We present a computer-assisted proof of the optimality of a particular 6-packing in $\mathbb{R}\mathbf{P}^3$, we introduce a linear-time constant-factor approximation algorithm for packing in the so-called Gerzon range, and we provide local optimality certificates for two infinite families of packings. Finally, we present perfected versions of various putatively optimal packings from Sloane's online database, along with a handful of infinite families they suggest, and we prove that these packings enjoy a certain weak notion of optimality.

A Turán theorem for extensions via an Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for Lagrangians
Published • View Publication • BIB
The extension of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is obtained from it by adding for every pair of vertices of $G$, which is not covered by an edge in $G$, an extra edge containing this pair and $(r-2)$ new vertices. In this paper we determine the Turán number of the extension of an $r$-graph consisting of two vertex-disjoint edges, settling a conjecture of Hefetz and Keevash, who previously determined this Turán number for $r=3$. As the key ingredient of the proof we show that the Lagrangian of intersecting $r$-graphs is maximized by principally intersecting $r$-graphs for $r \geq 4$.

On random exchange-stable matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the group of $n$ men and $n$ women, each with their own preference list for a potential marriage partner. The stable marriage is a bipartite matching such that no unmatched pair (man, woman) prefer each other to their partners in the matching. Its non-bipartite version, with an even number $n$ of members, is known as the stable roommates problem. Jose Alcalde introduced an alternative notion of exchange-stable, one-sided, matching: no two members prefer each other's partners to their own partners in the matching. Katarina Cechlárová and David Manlove showed that the e-stable matching decision problem is $NP$-complete for both types of matchings. We prove that the expected number of e-stable matchings is asymptotic to $\left(\frac{πn}{2}\right)^{1/2}$ for two-sided case, and to $e^{1/2}$ for one-sided case. However, the standard deviation of this number exceeds $1.13^n$, ($1.06^n$ resp.). As an obvious byproduct, there exist instances of preference lists with at least $1.13^n$ ($1.06^n$ resp.) e-stable matchings. The probability that there is no matching which is stable and e-stable is at least $1-e^{-n^{1/6+o(1)}}$, ($1-O(2^{-n/2})$ resp.).

Domination and 2-degree-packing numbers in graphs
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set $D\subseteq V(G)$ such that \-every vertex of $G$ is either in $D$ or is adjacent to a vertex in $D$. The domination number of $G$, $γ(G)$, is the minimum order of a dominating set. A subset $R$ of edges of a graph $G$ is a 2-degree-packing, if any three edges from $R$ do not have the same incident vertex. The 2-degree-packing number of $G$, $ν_2(G)$, is the maximum order of a 2-degree-packing of $G$. In this paper, we prove that any simple graph $G$ satisfies $γ(G)\leqν_2(G)-1$. Furthermore, we give a characterization of simple connected graphs $G$ satisfying $γ(G)=ν_2(G)-1$.
Improved User-Private Information Retrieval via Finite Geometry
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a User-Private Information Retrieval (UPIR) scheme, a set of users collaborate to retrieve files from a database without revealing to observers which participant in the scheme requested the file. Protocols have been proposed based on pairwise balanced designs and symmetric designs. Wepropose a new class of UPIR schemes based on generalised quadrangles (GQ). We prove that while the privacy of users in the previously proposed schemes could be compromised by a single user, the new GQ-UPIR schemes proposed in this paper maintain privacy with high probability even when up to $O(n^{1/4 - ε})$ users collude, where $n$ is the total number of users in the scheme.

Diagonal sum of infinite image partition regular matrices
A finite or infinite matrix $A$ is image partition regular provided that whenever $\mathbb N$ is finitely colored, there must be some $\vec{x}$ with entries from $\mathbb N$ such that all entries of $A\vec{x}$ are in some color class. In [6], it was proved that the diagonal sum of a finite and an infinite image partition regular matrix is also image partition regular. It was also shown there that centrally image partition regular matrices are closed under diagonal sum. Using Theorem 3.3 of [2], one can conclude that diagonal sum of two infinite image partition regular matrices may not be image partition regular. In this paper we shall study the image partition regularity of diagonal sum of some infinite image partition regular matrices. In many cases it will produce more infinite image partition regular matrices.

Compositions of Functions and Permutations Specified by Minimal Reaction Systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies mathematical properties of reaction systems that was introduced by Enrenfeucht and Rozenberg as computational models inspired by biochemical reaction in the living cells. In particular, we continue the study on the generative power of functions specified by minimal reaction systems under composition initiated by Salomaa. Allowing degenerate reaction systems, functions specified by minimal reaction systems over a quarternary alphabet that are permutations generate the alternating group on the power set of the background set.

Hook formulas for skew shapes III. Multivariate and product formulas
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 2 (2019) no. 5, pp. 815-861 • View Publication • BIB
We give new product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes and for the principal evaluation of the certain Schubert polynomials. These are proved by utilizing symmetries for evaluations of factorial Schur functions, extensively studied in the first two papers in the series "Hook formulas for skew shapes" [arxiv:1512.08348, arxiv:1610.04744]. We also apply our technology to obtain determinantal and product formulas for the partition function of certain weighted lozenge tilings, and give various probabilistic and asymptotic applications.

Odd length: odd diagrams and descent classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define and study odd analogues of classical geometric and combinatorial objects associated to permutations, namely odd Schubert varieties, odd diagrams, and odd inversion sets. We show that there is a bijection between odd inversion sets of permutations and acyclic orientations of the Turán graph, that the dimension of the odd Schubert variety associated to a permutation is the odd length of the permutation, and give several necessary conditions for a subset of $[n] \times [n]$ to be the odd diagram of a permutation. We also study the sign-twisted generating function of the odd length over descent classes of the symmetric groups.
