On a theorem of Morlaye and Joly and its generalization
Published in European J. Combin. 80 (2019) 37-42 • View Publication • BIB
We show that a weaker version of the well-known theorem of Morlaye and Joly on diagonal equations is a simple consequence of a restricted variable version of the Chevalley-Warning theorem. Moreover, we extend the result of Morlaye and Joly to the case of an equation of the form $$b_1D_{m_1}(X_1,a_1)+\dots+b_nD_{m_n}(X_n,a_n)=c,$$ where $D_{m_1}(X_1,a_1),\dots,D_{m_n}(X_n,a_n)$ are Dickson polynomials.
Shrub-depth: Capturing Height of Dense Graphs
Published in Logical Methods in Computer Science, Volume 15, Issue 1 (January 31, 2019) lmcs:3798 • View Publication • BIB
The recent increase of interest in the graph invariant called tree-depth and in its applications in algorithms and logic on graphs led to a natural question: is there an analogously useful "depth" notion also for dense graphs (say; one which is stable under graph complementation)? To this end, in a 2012 conference paper, a new notion of shrub-depth has been introduced, such that it is related to the established notion of clique-width in a similar way as tree-depth is related to tree-width. Since then shrub-depth has been successfully used in several research papers. Here we provide an in-depth review of the definition and basic properties of shrub-depth, and we focus on its logical aspects which turned out to be most useful. In particular, we use shrub-depth to give a characterization of the lower $ω$ levels of the MSO1 transduction hierarchy of simple graphs.

On the $p'$-subgraph of the Young graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $p$ be a prime number. In this article we study the restriction to $\mathfrak{S}_{n-1}$ of irreducible characters of degree coprime to $p$ of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. In particular, we study the combinatorial properties of the subgraph $\mathbb{Y}_{p'}$ of the Young graph $\mathbb{Y}$. This is an extension to odd primes of the work done by Ayyer, Prasad and Spallone for $p=2$.
Notes on Growing a Tree in a Graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the height of a spanning tree $T$ of a graph $G$ obtained by starting with a single vertex of $G$ and repeatedly selecting, uniformly at random, an edge of $G$ with exactly one endpoint in $T$ and adding this edge to $T$.

Schubert puzzles and integrability I: invariant trilinear forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
The puzzle rules for computing Schubert calculus on $d$-step flag manifolds, proven in [Knutson Tao 2003] for $1$-step, in [Buch Kresch Purbhoo Tamvakis 2016] for $2$-step, and conjectured in [Coskun Vakil 2009] for $3$-step, lead to vector configurations (one vector for each puzzle edge label) that we recognize as the weights of some minuscule representations. The $R$-matrices of those representations (which, for $2$-step flag manifolds, involve triality of $D_4$) degenerate to give us puzzle formulae for two previously unsolved Schubert calculus problems: $K_T(2$-step flag manifolds$)$ and $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$. The $K(3$-step flag manifolds$)$ formula, which involves 151 new puzzle pieces, implies Buch's correction to the first author's 1999 conjecture for $H^*(3$-step flag manifolds$)$.

A comment on Intersecting Families of Permutations
Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel proved that for large enough $n$, a $t$-intersecting family of permutations contains at most $(n-t)!$ permutations. Their main theorem also states that equality holds only for $t$-cosets. We show that their proof of the characterization of extremal families is wrong. However, the characterization follows from a paper of Ellis, as mentioned already by Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel.

Breaking ties in collective decision making
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many classical social preference (multiwinner social choice) correspondences are resolute only when two alternatives and an odd number of individuals are considered. Thus, they generally admit several resolute refinements, each of them naturally interpreted as a tie-breaking rule. In this paper we find out conditions which make a social preference (multiwinner social choice) correspondence admit a resolute refinement fulfilling suitable weak versions of the anonymity and neutrality principles, as well as reversal symmetry (immunity to the reversal bias).
More Turán-Type Theorems for Triangles in Convex Point Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the following family of problems: Given a set of $n$ points in convex position, what is the maximum number triangles one can create having these points as vertices while avoiding certain sets of forbidden configurations. As forbidden configurations we consider all 8 ways in which a pair of triangles in such a point set can interact. This leads to 256 extremal Turán-type questions. We give nearly tight (within a $\log n$ factor) bounds for 248 of these questions and show that the remaining 8 questions are all asymptotically equivalent to Stein's longstanding tripod packing problem.

Sums of Palindromes: an Approach via Automata
Recently, Cilleruelo, Luca, & Baxter proved, for all bases b >= 5, that every natural number is the sum of at most 3 natural numbers whose base-b representation is a palindrome. However, the cases b = 2, 3, 4 were left unresolved. We prove, using a decision procedure based on automata, that every natural number is the sum of at most 4 natural numbers whose base-2 representation is a palindrome. Here the constant 4 is optimal. We obtain similar results for bases 3 and 4, thus completely resolving the problem. We consider some other variations on this problem, and prove similar results. We argue that heavily case-based proofs are a good signal that a decision procedure may help to automate the proof.
Higher Order Turán Inequalities for the Partition Function
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Turán inequalities and the higher order Turán inequalities arise in the study of Maclaurin coefficients of an entire function in the Laguerre-Pólya class. A real sequence $\{a_{n}\}$ is said to satisfy the Turán inequalities if for $n\geq 1$, $a_n^2-a_{n-1}a_{n+1}\geq 0$. It is said to satisfy the higher order Turán inequalities if for $n\geq 1$, $4(a_{n}^2-a_{n-1}a_{n+1})(a_{n+1}^2-a_{n}a_{n+2})-(a_{n}a_{n+1}-a_{n-1}a_{n+2})^2\geq 0$. A sequence satisfying the Turán inequalities is also called log-concave. For the partition function $p(n)$, DeSalvo and Pak showed that for $n>25$, the sequence $\{ p(n)\}_{n> 25}$ is log-concave, that is, $p(n)^2-p(n-1)p(n+1)>0$ for $n> 25$. It was conjectured by Chen that $p(n)$ satisfies the higher order Turán inequalities for $n\geq 95$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture by using the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula to derive an upper bound and a lower bound for $p(n+1)p(n-1)/p(n)^2$. Consequently, for $n\geq 95$, the Jensen polynomials $g_{3,n-1}(x)=p(n-1)+3p(n)x+3p(n+1)x^2+p(n+2)x^3$ have only real zeros. We conjecture that for any positive integer $m\geq 4$ there exists an integer $N(m)$ such that for $n\geq N(m) $, the polynomials $\sum_{k=0}^m {m\choose k}p(n+k)x^k$ have only real zeros. This conjecture was independently posed by Ono.

Line Hermitian Grassmann Codes and their Parameters
Published in Finite Fields Appl. 51 (2018), 407-432 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we introduce and study line Hermitian Grassmann codes as those subcodes of the Grassmann codes associated to the $2$-Grassmannian of a Hermitian polar space defined over a finite field of square order. In particular, we determine their parameters and characterize the words of minimum weight for $m\neq5$.

A formalization of convex polyhedra based on the simplex method
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a formalization of convex polyhedra in the proof assistant Coq. The cornerstone of our work is a complete implementation of the simplex method, together with the proof of its correctness and termination. This allows us to define the basic predicates over polyhedra in an effective way (i.e., as programs), and relate them with the corresponding usual logical counterparts. To this end, we make an extensive use of the Boolean reflection methodology. The benefit of this approach is that we can easily derive the proof of several fundamental results on polyhedra, such as Farkas' Lemma, the duality theorem of linear programming, and Minkowski's Theorem.

Symmetric group representations and Z

We discuss implications of the following statement about the representation theory of symmetric groups: every integer appears infinitely often as an irreducible character evaluation, and every nonnegative integer appears infinitely often as a Littlewood-Richardson coefficient and as a Kronecker coefficient.

Mallows Permutations and Finite Dependence
Published in Ann. Probab. 48(1): 343-379 (January 2020) • View Publication • BIB
We use the Mallows permutation model to construct a new family of stationary finitely dependent proper colorings of the integers. We prove that these colorings can be expressed as finitary factors of i.i.d. processes with finite mean coding radii. They are the first colorings known to have these properties. Moreover, we prove that the coding radii have exponential tails, and that the colorings can also be expressed as functions of countable-state Markov chains. We deduce analogous existence statements concerning shifts of finite type and higher-dimensional colorings.

Counting chambers in restricted Coxeter arrangements
Solomon showed that the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group $W$ satisfies a product decomposition depending on the exponents of $W$. This polynomial coincides with the rank-generating function of the poset of regions of the underlying Coxeter arrangement. In this note we determine all instances when the analogous factorization property of the rank-generating function of the poset of regions holds for a restriction of a Coxeter arrangement. It turns out that this is always the case with the exception of some instances in type $E_8$.
Depth and regularity modulo a principal ideal

We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.

Plane Graphs are Facially-non-repetitively $10^{4 \cdot10^7}$-Choosable
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sequence $\left(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_{2n}\right)$ of even length is a repetition if $\left(x_1,\ldots,x_n\right) = \left(x_{n+1},\ldots,x_{2n}\right)$. We prove existence of a constant $C < 10^{4 \cdot 10^7}$ such that given any planar drawing of a graph $G$, and a list $L(v)$ of $C$ permissible colors for each vertex $v$ in $G$, there is a choice of a permissible color for each vertex such that the sequence of colors of the vertices on any facial simple path in $G$ is not a repetition.

On arithmetic of one class of plane maps
We study bipartite maps on the plane with one infinite face and one face of perimeter 2. At first we consider the problem of their enumeration an then study the connection between the combinatorial structure of a map and the degree of its definition field. The second problem is considered, when the number of edges is $p+1$, where $p$ is a prime.

On Sampling Edges Almost Uniformly
We consider the problem of sampling an edge almost uniformly from an unknown graph, $G = (V, E)$. Access to the graph is provided via queries of the following types: (1) uniform vertex queries, (2) degree queries, and (3) neighbor queries. We describe an algorithm that returns a random edge $e \in E$ using $\tilde{O}(n / \sqrt{\varepsilon m})$ queries in expectation, where $n = |V|$ is the number of vertices, and $m = |E|$ is the number of edges, such that each edge $e$ is sampled with probability $(1 \pm \varepsilon)/m$. We prove that our algorithm is optimal in the sense that any algorithm that samples an edge from an almost-uniform distribution must perform $Ω(n / \sqrt{m})$ queries.

Pinned distance problem, slicing measures and local smoothing estimates
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), no. 6, 4459-4474 • View Publication • BIB
We improve the Peres-Schlag result on pinned distances in sets of a given Hausdorff dimension. In particular, for Euclidean distances, with $$Δ^y(E) = \{|x-y|:x\in E\},$$ we prove that for any $E, F\subset{\Bbb R}^d$, there exists a probability measure $μ_F$ on $F$ such that for $μ_F$-a.e. $y\in F$, (1) $\dim_{\mathcal H}(Δ^y(E))\geqβ$ if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E) + \frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d - 1 + β$; (2) $Δ^y(E)$ has positive Lebesgue measure if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d$; (3) $Δ^y(E)$ has non-empty interior if $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F) > d+1$. We also show that in the case when $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d-1}{d+1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)>d$, for $μ_F$-a.e. $y\in F$, $$ \left\{t\in{\Bbb R} : \dim_{\mathcal H}(\{x\in E:|x-y|=t\}) \geq \dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\frac{d+1}{d-1}\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)-d \right\} $$ has positive Lebesgue measure. This describes dimensions of slicing subsets of $E$, sliced by spheres centered at $y$. In our proof, local smoothing estimates of Fourier integral operators (FIO) plays a crucial role. In turn, we obtain results on sharpness of local smoothing estimates by constructing geometric counterexamples.
