We show that points in specific degree 2 hypersurfaces in the Grassmannian $Gr(3, n)$ correspond to generic arrangements of $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{C}^3$ with associated discriminantal arrangement having intersections of multiplicity three in codimension two.

Semi-equivelar maps on the torus are Archimedean
Published • View Publication • BIB
If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map on a surface are of same type then the map is called semi-equivelar. There are eleven types of Archimedean tilings on the plane. All the Archimedean tilings are semi-equivelar maps. If a map $X$ on the torus is a quotient of an Archimedean tiling on the plane then the map $X$ is semi-equivelar. We show that each semi-equivelar map on the torus is a quotient of an Archimedean tiling on the plane. Vertex-transitive maps are semi-equivelar maps. We know that four types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus are always vertex-transitive and there are examples of other seven types of semi-equivelar maps which are not vertex-transitive. We show that the number of ${\rm Aut}(Y)$-orbits of vertices for any semi-equivelar map $Y$ on the torus is at most six. In fact, the number of orbits is at most three except one type of semi-equivelar maps. Our bounds on the number of orbits are sharp.

Classifying bent functions by their Cayley graphs
In 1999 Bernasconi and Codenotti noted that the Cayley graph of a bent function is strongly regular. This paper describes the concept of extended Cayley equivalence of bent functions, discusses some connections between bent functions, designs, and codes, and explores the relationship between extended Cayley equivalence and extended affine equivalence. SageMath scripts and CoCalc worksheets are used to compute and display some of these relationships, for bent functions up to dimension 8.

Cubic vertex-transitive non-Cayley graphs of order 12p
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is said to be {\em vertex-transitive non-Cayley} if its full automorphism group acts transitively on its vertices and contains no subgroups acting regularly on its vertices. In this paper, a complete classification of cubic vertex-transitive non-Cayley graphs of order $12p$, where $p$ is a prime, is given. As a result, there are $11$ sporadic and one infinite family of such graphs, of which the sporadic ones occur when $p=5$, $7$ or $17$, and the infinite family exists if and only if $p\equiv1\ (\mod 4)$, and in this family there is a unique graph for a given order.

Some results of strongly primitive tensors
In this paper, we show that an order $m$ dimension 2 tensor is primitive if and only if its majorization matrix is primitive, and then we obtain the characterization of order $m$ dimension 2 strongly primitive tensors and the bound of the strongly primitive degree. Furthermore, we study the properties of strongly primitive tensors with $n\geq 3$, and propose some problems for further research.

Boardman--Vogt tensor products of absolutely free operads
Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics. 2020;150(1):367-385 • View Publication • BIB
We establish a combinatorial model for the Boardman--Vogt tensor product of several absolutely free operads, that is free symmetric operads that are also free as $\mathbb{S}$-modules. Our results imply that such a tensor product is always a free $\mathbb{S}$-module, in contrast with the results of Kock and Bremner--Madariaga on hidden commutativity for the Boardman--Vogt tensor square of the operad of non-unital associative algebras.

Coboundary categories and local rules
Published • View Publication • BIB
First we develop the theory of local rules for coboundary categories. Then we describe the local rules in two main cases. First for the quantum groups in general and in the seminormal representations of the Hecke algebras. Then for crystals in general and specifically for crystals of minuscule representations. Finally we show how growth diagrams can be extended to construct the action of the cactus group on highest weight words.
A note on identities in plactic monoids and monoids of upper-triangular tropical matrices
This paper uses the combinatorics of Young tableaux to prove the plactic monoid of infinite rank does not satisfy a non-trivial identity, by showing that the plactic monoid of rank $n$ cannot satisfy a non-trivial identity of length less than or equal to $n$. A new identity is then proven to hold for the monoid of $n \times n$ upper-triangular tropical matrices. Finally, a straightforward embedding is exhibited of the plactic monoid of rank $3$ into the direct product of two copies of the monoid of $3\times 3$ upper-triangular tropical matrices, giving a new proof that the plactic monoid of rank $3$ satisfies a non-trivial identity.

Vector spaces and Grassmann graphs over residue class rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$ be the residue class ring of integers modulo $p^s$, where $p$ is a prime number and $s$ is a positive integer. Using matrix representation and the inner rank of a matrix, we study the intersection, join, dimension formula and dual subspaces on vector subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}^n_{p^s}$. Based on these results, we investigate the Grassmann graph $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}$. $G_{p^s}(n,m)$ is a connected vertex-transitive graph, and we determine its valency, clique number and maximum cliques. Finally, we characterize the automorphisms of $G_{p^s}(n,m)$.

Equally spaced collinear points in Euclidean Ramsey theory
It is proved that for $k\geq 4$, if the points of $k$-dimensional Euclidean space are coloured in red and blue, then there are either two red points distance one apart or $k+3$ blue collinear points with distance one between any two consecutive points. This result is new for $4\leq k\leq 10$.

Group representations that resist worst-case sampling
Motivated by expansion in Cayley graphs, we show that there exist infinitely many groups $G$ with a nontrivial irreducible unitary representation whose average over every set of $o(\log\log|G|)$ elements of $G$ has operator norm $1 - o(1)$. This answers a question of Lovett, Moore, and Russell, and strengthens their negative answer to a question of Wigderson. The construction is the affine group of $\mathbb{F}_p$ and uses the fact that for every $A \subset \mathbb{F}_p\setminus\{0\}$, there is a set of size $\exp(\exp(O(|A|)))$ that is almost invariant under both additive and multiplicatpive translations by elements of $A$.

Hadamard partitioned difference families and their descendants
Published • View Publication • BIB
If $D$ is a $(4u^2,2u^2-u,u^2-u)$ Hadamard difference set (HDS) in $G$, then $\{G,G\setminus D\}$ is clearly a $(4u^2,[2u^2-u,2u^2+u],2u^2)$ partitioned difference family (PDF). Any $(v,K,λ)$-PDF will be said of Hadamard-type if $v=2λ$ as the one above. We present a doubling construction which, starting from any such PDF, leads to an infinite class of PDFs. As a special consequence, we get a PDF in a group of order $4u^2(2n+1)$ and three block-sizes $4u^2-2u$, $4u^2$ and $4u^2+2u$, whenever we have a $(4u^2,2u^2-u,u^2-u)$-HDS and the maximal prime power divisors of $2n+1$ are all greater than $4u^2+2u$.
On the weak Roman domination number of lexicographic product graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A vertex $v$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be undefended with respect to a function $f: V \longrightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ if $f(v)=0$ and $f(u)=0$ for every vertex $u$ adjacent to $v$. We call the function $f$ a weak Roman dominating function if for every $v$ such that $f(v)=0$ there exists a vertex $u$ adjacent to $v$ such that $f(u)\in \{1,2\}$ and the function $f': V \longrightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ defined by $f'(v)=1$, $f'(u)=f(u)-1$ and $f'(z)=f(z)$ for every $z\in V \setminus\{u,v\}$, has no undefended vertices. The weight of $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V(G) }f(v)$. The weak Roman domination number of a graph $G$, denoted by $γ_r(G)$, is the minimum weight among all weak Roman dominating functions on $G$. Henning and Hedetniemi [Discrete Math. 266 (2003) 239-251] showed that the problem of computing $γ_r(G)$ is NP-Hard, even when restricted to bipartite or chordal graphs. This suggests finding $γ_r(G)$ for special classes of graphs or obtaining good bounds on this invariant. In this article, we obtain closed formulae and tight bounds for the weak Roman domination number of lexicographic product graphs in terms of invariants of the factor graphs involved in the product.

Graphs with $α_1$ and $τ_1$ both large
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, let $τ_1(G)$ denote the smallest size of a set of edges whose deletion makes $G$ triangle-free, and let $α_1(G)$ denote the largest size of an edge set containing at most one edge from each triangle of $G$. Erdős, Gallai, and Tuza introduced several problems with the unifying theme that $α_1(G)$ and $τ_1(G)$ cannot both be "very large"; the most well-known such problem is their conjecture that $α_1(G) + τ_1(G) \leq |V(G)|^2/4$, which was proved by Norin and Sun. We consider three other problems within this theme (two introduced by Erdős, Gallai, and Tuza, another by Norin and Sun), all of which request an upper bound either on $\min\{α_1(G), τ_1(G)\}$ or on $α_1(G) + kτ_1(G)$ for some constant $k$, and prove the existence of graphs for which these quantities are "large".
Free quantum fields in 4D and Calabi-Yau spaces
Published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 161602 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
We develop general counting formulae for primary fields in free four dimensional (4D) scalar conformal field theory (CFT). Using a duality map between primary operators in scalar field theory and multi-variable polynomial functions subject to differential constraints, we identify a sector of holomorphic primary fields corresponding to polynomial functions on a class of permutation orbifolds. These orbifolds have palindromic Hilbert series, which indicates they are Calabi-Yau. We construct the top-dimensional holomorphic form expected from the Calabi-Yau property. This sector includes and extends previous constructions of infinite families of primary fields. We sketch the generalization of these results to free 4D vector and matrix CFTs.

A Boltzmann approach to percolation on random triangulations
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 71 (2019) 1-43 • View Publication • BIB
We study the percolation model on Boltzmann triangulations using a generating function approach. More precisely, we consider a Boltzmann model on the set of finite planar triangulations, together with a percolation configuration (either site-percolation or bond-percolation) on this triangulation. By enumerating triangulations with boundaries according to both the boundary length and the number of vertices/edges on the boundary, we are able to identify a phase transition for the geometry of the origin cluster. For instance, we show that the probability that a percolation interface has length n decays exponentially with n except at a particular value p\_c of the percolation parameter p for which the decay is polynomial (of order n --10/3). Moreover, the probability that the origin cluster has size n decays exponentially if p < p c and polynomially if p $\ge$ p\_c. The critical percolation value is p\_c = 1/2 for site percolation, and p c = 2 $\sqrt$ 3--1 11 for bond percolation. These values coincide with critical percolation thresholds for infinite triangula-tions identified by Angel for site-percolation, and by Angel \& Curien for bond-percolation, and we give an independent derivation of these percolation thresholds. Lastly, we revisit the criticality conditions for random Boltzmann maps, and argue that at p\_c , the percolation clusters conditioned to have size n should converge toward the stable map of parameter 7 6 introduced by Le Gall \& Miermont. This enables us to derive heuristically some new critical exponents.

On the Tightness of Bounds for Transients of Weak CSR Expansions and Periodicity Transients of Critical Rows and Columns of Tropical Matrix Powers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the transients of matrices in max-plus algebra. Our approach is based on the weak CSR expansion. Using this expansion, the transient can be expressed by $\max\{T_1,T_2\}$, where $T_1$ is the weak CSR threshold and $T_2$ is the time after which the purely pseudoperiodic CSR terms start to dominate in the expansion. Various bounds have been derived for $T_1$ and $T_2$, naturally leading to the question which matrices, if any, attain these bounds. In the present paper we characterize the matrices attaining two particular bounds on $T_1$, which are generalizations of the bounds of Wielandt and Dulmage-Mendelsohn on the indices of non-weighted digraphs. This also leads to a characterization of tightness for the same bounds on the transients of critical rows and columns. The characterizations themselves are generalizations of those for the non-weighted case.
Automatic discovery of structural rules of permutation classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce an algorithm that conjectures the structure of a permutation class in the form of a disjoint cover of "rules"; similar to generalized grid classes. The cover is usually easily verified by a human and translated into an enumeration. The algorithm is successful on different inputs than other algorithms and can succeed with any polynomial permutation class. We apply it to every non-polynomial permutation class avoiding a set of length four patterns. The structures found by the algorithm can sometimes allow an enumeration of the permutation class with respect to permutation statistics, as well as choosing a permutation uniformly at random from the permutation class. We sketch a new algorithm formalizing the human verification of the conjectured covers.
