On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.
On sequences associated to the invariant theory of rank two simple Lie algebras
We study two families of sequences, listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS), which are associated to invariant theory of Lie algebras. For the first family, we prove combinatorially that the sequences A059710 and A108307 are related by a binomial transform. Based on this, we present two independent proofs of a recurrence equation for A059710, which was conjectured by Mihailovs. Besides, we also give a direct proof of Mihailovs' conjecture by the method of algebraic residues. As a consequence, closed formulae for the generating function of sequence A059710 are obtained in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that sequences in the second family are also related by binomial transforms.

Promotion on oscillating and alternating tableaux and rotation of matchings and permutations

Using Henriques' and Kamnitzer's cactus groups, Schützenberger's promotion and evacuation operators on standard Young tableaux can be generalised in a very natural way to operators acting on highest weight words in tensor products of crystals. For the crystals corresponding to the vector representations of the symplectic groups, we show that Sundaram's map to perfect matchings intertwines promotion and rotation of the associated chord diagrams, and evacuation and reversal. We also exhibit a map with similar features for the crystals corresponding to the adjoint representations of the general linear groups. We prove these results by applying van Leeuwen's generalisation of Fomin's local rules for jeu de taquin, connected to the action of the cactus groups by Lenart, and variants of Fomin's growth diagrams for the Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

Coboundary categories and local rules
Published • View PublicationBIB
First we develop the theory of local rules for coboundary categories. Then we describe the local rules in two main cases. First for the quantum groups in general and in the seminormal representations of the Hecke algebras. Then for crystals in general and specifically for crystals of minuscule representations. Finally we show how growth diagrams can be extended to construct the action of the cactus group on highest weight words.

Combinatorics of symplectic invariant tensors
Published • View PublicationBIB
An important problem from invariant theory is to describe the subspace of a tensor power of a representation invariant under the action of the group. According to Weyl's classic, the first main (later: 'fundamental') theorem of invariant theory states that all invariants are expressible in terms of a finite number among them, whereas a second main theorem determines the relations between those basic invariants. Here we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic group Sp(2n). Our formulation is completely explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. As a corollary, we obtain an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

A combinatorial approach to classical representation theory
A fundamental problem from invariant theory is to describe the endomorphism algebra of multilinear functions on a representation V invariant under the action of a group G. According to Weyl's classic, a first main (later: fundamental) theorem of invariant theory provides a finite spanning set for this algebra, whereas a a second main theorem describes the linear relations between those basic invariants. We use diagrammatic methods to carry Weyl's programme a step further, providing explicit bases for the subspace of the r-th tensor powers of V invariant under the action of G, that are additionally preserved by the action of the long cycle of the symmetric group on r letters. The representations we study are essentially those that occur in Weyl's book: the defining representations of the symplectic groups, the defining representations of the symmetric groups considered as linear representations, and the adjoint representations of the linear groups. In particular, we present a transparent, combinatorial proof of a second fundamental theorem for the defining representation of the symplectic groups Sp(2n). Our formulation is explicit and provides a very precise link to (n+1)-noncrossing perfect matchings, going beyond a dimension count. Extending our argument to the k-th symmetric powers of these representations, the combinatorial objects involved turn out to be (n+1)-noncrossing k-regular graphs. As corollaries we obtain instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for these objects and the natural rotation action. In general, we derive branching rules for the diagram algebras corresponding to the representations in a uniform way. We also compute the Frobenius characteristics of modules of the diagram algebras restricted to the action of the symmetric group and obtain the isotypic decomposition of the r-th tensor power of V when n is large enough in comparison to r.

Descent sets for symplectic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The descent set of an oscillating (or up-down) tableau is introduced. This descent set plays the same role in the representation theory of the symplectic groups as the descent set of a standard tableau plays in the representation theory of the general linear groups. In particular, we show that the descent set is preserved by Sundaram's correspondence. This gives a direct combinatorial interpretation of the branching rules for the defining representations of the symplectic groups; equivalently, for the Frobenius character of the action of a symmetric group on an isotypic subspace in a tensor power of the defining representation of a symplectic group.

Invariant tensors and the cyclic sieving phenomenon

We construct a large class of examples of the cyclic sieving phenomenon by expoiting the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras. Let $M$ be a finite dimensional representation of a semi-simple Lie algebra and let $B$ be the associated Kashiwara crystal. For $r\ge 0$, the triple $(X,c,P)$ which exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon is constructed as follows: the set $X$ is the set of isolated vertices in the crystal $\otimes^rB$; the map $c\colon X\rightarrow X$ is a generalisation of promotion acting on standard tableaux of rectangular shape and the polynomial $P$ is the fake degree of the Frobenius character of a representation of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ related to the natural action of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ on the subspace of invariant tensors in $\otimes^rM$. Taking $M$ to be the defining representation of $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ gives the cyclic sieving phenomenon for rectangular tableaux.

Enumeration of non-positive planar trivalent graphs
Published in J Algebr Comb (2007) 25:357-373 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct inverse bijections between two sequences of finite sets. One sequence is defined by planar diagrams and the other by lattice walks. G. Kuperberg has shown that the number of elements in these two sets are equal. This problem and the methods we use are motivated by the representation theory of the exceptional simple Lie algebra $G_2$. However in this account we have emphasised the combinatorics.
