Solution to Bishnoi's conjecture on minimal t-fold blocking sets of maximal size
Bishnoi conjectured that if a minimal t-fold blocking set in a projective plane of prime power order has maximal size then it is either a projective plane minus one point, the complement of a Baer subplane or a unital. In this note we prove this conjecture.

Cobordism classes of maps and covers for spheres
Published in Topology and its Applications, 237 (2018), p. 21-25 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we show that for m>n the set of cobordism classes of maps from m-sphere to n-sphere is trivial. The determination of the cobordism homotopy groups of spheres admits applications to the covers for spheres.

Validity of Borodin & Kostochka Conjecture for a Class of Graphs
Borodin & Kostochka conjectured that if maximum degree of a graph is greater than or equal to 9, then the chromatic number of the graph is less than or equal to maximum of ω and maximum degree minus 1. Here we prove that this Conjecture is true for {P3 UNION K1}-free graphs and {K2 UNION complement of K2}-free graphs.

On the diameter of an ideal
Published • View Publication • BIB
We begin the study of the notion of diameter of an ideal I of a polynomial ring S over a field, an invariant measuring the distance between the minimal primes of I. We provide large classes of Hirsch ideals, i.e. ideals with diameter not larger than the codimension, such as: quadratic radical ideals of codimension at most 4 and such that S/I is Gorenstein, or ideals admitting a square-free complete intersection initial ideal.

Universality and Fourth Moment Theorem for homogeneous sums. Orthogonal polynomials and apolarity
The aim of the dissertation is threefold: the first two parts are devoted to explore the Fourth Moment Theorem and universality properties for homogeneous sums, while the last part approaches the classical theory of orthogonal polynomials via the invariant theory of binary forms. Specifically, Part I deals with the Lindberg method of influence functions in free probability spaces. By providing a general multidimensional invariance principle for homogeneous sums in freely independent variables, a class of universal laws for semicircular and free Poisson approximations will be derived that satisfies also the so-called Fourth Moment phenomenon. It is known that the fourth moment phenomenon for homogeneous sums applies, for instance, when X is Gaussian, Poisson, semicircular or free Poisson distributed. Is there a characterizing property enabling this phenomenon, or does it occur accidentally? The goal of Part II is the characterization of random variables X such that homogeneous sums based on i.i.d. copies of X verify the Fourth Moment Theorem, both for classical and free probability spaces. The main results will be the determination of a condition on the fourth cumulant of X that is sufficient for the Fourth Moment Theorem to hold. The optimality of such condition is also discussed. Part III has a purely algebraic flavour, and aims at recasting orthogonality of polynomials within the invariant theory of binary forms through the symbolic methods introduced by Kung and Rota. Then, by focusing on apolarity. a unifying representation for (generalized) sequences of orthogonal polynomials (in any number of variables) is achieved and explicit formulae for the moments of the random discriminants are derived. In this specific case of cumulants, a focus is presented within the combinatorial approach to stochastic integration in terms of diagonal measures.

Dimensions of sets which uniformly avoid arithmetic progressions
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not., (2019), 4419-4430 • View Publication • BIB
We provide estimates for the dimensions of sets in $\mathbb{R}$ which uniformly avoid finite arithmetic progressions. More precisely, we say $F$ uniformly avoids arithmetic progressions of length $k \geq 3$ if there is an $ε>0$ such that one cannot find an arithmetic progression of length $k$ and gap length $Δ>0$ inside the $εΔ$ neighbourhood of $F$. Our main result is an explicit upper bound for the Assouad (and thus Hausdorff) dimension of such sets in terms of $k$ and $ε$. In the other direction, we provide examples of sets which uniformly avoid arithmetic progressions of a given length but still have relatively large Hausdorff dimension. We also consider higher dimensional analogues of these problems, where arithmetic progressions are replaced with arithmetic patches lying in a hyperplane. As a consequence we obtain a discretised version of a `reverse Kakeya problem': we show that if the dimension of a set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is sufficiently large, then it closely approximates arithmetic progressions in every direction.

On Selkow's Bound on the Independence Number of Graphs
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory, ISSN (Online) 2083-5892 • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ and independence number $α(G)$, S. M. Selkow (Discrete Mathematics, 132(1994)363--365) established the famous lower bound $\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)}\frac{1}{d(v)+1}(1+\max\{\frac{d(v)}{d(v)+1}-\sum\limits_{u\in N(v)}\frac{1}{d(u)+1},0 \})$ on $α(G)$, where $N(v)$ and $d(v)=|N(v)|$ denote the neighborhood and the degree of a vertex $v\in V(G)$, respectively. However, Selkow's original proof of this result is incorrect. We give a new probabilistic proof of Selkow's bound here.

A notion of minor-based matroid connectivity
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics Volume 100, September 2018, Pages 163-178 • View Publication • BIB
For a matroid $N$, a matroid $M$ is $N$-connected if every two elements of $M$ are in an $N$-minor together. Thus a matroid is connected if and only if it is $U_{1,2}$-connected. This paper proves that $U_{1,2}$ is the only connected matroid $N$ such that if $M$ is $N$-connected with $|E(M)| > |E(N)|$, then $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is $N$-connected for all elements $e$. Moreover, we show that $U_{1,2}$ and $M(\mathcal{W}_2)$ are the only connected matroids $N$ such that, whenever a matroid has an $N$-minor using $\{e,f\}$ and an $N$-minor using $\{f,g\}$, it also has an $N$-minor using $\{e,g\}$. Finally, we show that $M$ is $U_{0,1} \oplus U_{1,1}$-connected if and only if every clonal class of $M$ is trivial.
A conjectural Peterson isomorphism in K-theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We state a precise conjectural isomorphism between localizations of the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of a flag variety and the equivariant K-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, in particular relating their Schubert bases and structure constants. This generalizes Peterson's isomorphism in (co)homology. We prove a formula for the Pontryagin structure constants in the K-homology ring, and we use it to check our conjecture in few situations.

The Interactive Sum Choice Number of Trees
We study the interactive sum choice number, a game coloring parameter introduced by Bonamy and Meeks, and obtain a recursive formula for the interactive sum choice number of forests. This formula coincides with a formula for the slow coloring cost of forests, a parameter introduced by Mahoney, Puleo, and West, and shows that these parameters are equal on forests. This answers a question of Bonamy and Meeks.

Asymptotics for Turán numbers of cycles in 3-uniform linear hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte. We establish a connection between the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ and the extremal number of edges in a graph of girth more than $2k-2$. Combining our result and a theorem of Collier-Cartaino, Graber and Jiang, we obtain that the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ is $Θ(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}})$ for $k = 2, 3, 4, 6$.

We introduce the class of weakly log canonical singularities, a natural generalization of semi-log canonical singularities. Toric varieties (associated to toric face rings, possibly non-normal or reducible) which have weakly (semi-) log canonical singularities are classified. In the toric case, we discuss residues to lc centers of codimension one or higher.

Inductive Freeness of Ziegler's Canonical Multiderivations for Reflection Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $A$ be a free hyperplane arrangement. In 1989, Ziegler showed that the restriction $A''$ of $A$ to any hyperplane endowed with the natural multiplicity is then a free multiarrangement. We initiate a study of the stronger freeness property of inductive freeness for these canonical free multiarrangements and investigate them for the underlying class of reflection arrangements. More precisely, let $A = A(W)$ be the reflection arrangement of a complex reflection group $W$. By work of Terao, each such reflection arrangement is free. Thus so is Ziegler's canonical multiplicity on the restriction $A''$ of $A$ to a hyperplane. We show that the latter is inductively free as a multiarrangement if and only if $A''$ itself is inductively free.

On degree sum conditions for 2-factors with a prescribed number of cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a vertex subset $X$ of a graph $G$, let $Δ_{t}(X)$ be the maximum value of the degree sums of the subsets of $X$ of size $t$. In this paper, we prove the following result: Let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $G$ be an $m$-connected graph of order $n \ge 5k - 2$. If $Δ_{2}(X) \ge n$ for every independent set $X$ of size $\lceil m/k \rceil+1$ in $G$, then $G$ has a 2-factor with exactly $k$ cycles. This is a common generalization of the results obtained by Brandt et al. [Degree conditions for 2-factors, J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173] and Yamashita [On degree sum conditions for long cycles and cycles through specified vertices, Discrete Math. 308 (2008) 6584-6587], respectively.

Factors of sums and alternating sums of products of $q$-binomial coefficients and powers of $q$-integers

We prove that, for all positive integers $n_1, \ldots, n_m$, $n_{m+1}=n_1$, and non-negative integers $j$ and $r$ with $j\leqslant m$, the following two expressions \begin{align*} &\frac{1}{[n_1+n_m+1]}{n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n_1} q^{j(k^2+k)-(2r+1)k}[2k+1]^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^m {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\brack n_i-k},\\[5pt] &\frac{1}{[n_1+n_m+1]}{n_1+n_{m}\brack n_1}^{-1}\sum_{k=0}^{n_1}(-1)^k q^{{k\choose 2}+j(k^2+k)-2rk}[2k+1]^{2r+1}\prod_{i=1}^m {n_i+n_{i+1}+1\brack n_i-k} \end{align*} are Laurent polynomials in $q$ with integer coefficients, where $[n]=1+q+\cdots+q^{n-1}$ and ${n\brack k}=\prod_{i=1}^k(1-q^{n-i+1})/(1-q^i)$. This gives a $q$-analogue of some divisibility results of sums and alternating sums involving binomial coefficients and powers of integers obtained by Guo and Zeng. We also confirm some related conjectures of Guo and Zeng by establishing their $q$-analogues. Several conjectural congruences for sums involving products of $q$-ballot numbers $\left({2n\brack n-k}-{2n\brack n-k-1}\right)$ are proposed in the last section of this paper.

The Edge-Wiener Index, the Szeged Indices and the PI Index of Benzenoid Systems in Sub-Linear Time
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 78 (2017) 675-688 • Search Publication
In this paper, we investigate the edge-Wiener index, the Szeged index, the edge-Szeged index, and the PI index, which are some of the most studied distance-based topological indices. As the main result we show that for benzenoid systems these indices can be computed in sub-linear time with respect to the number of vertices. More precisely, they can be computed in the time dependent on the length of the boundary cycle of a benzenoid system.
Goldberg, Fuller, Caspar, Klug and Coxeter and a general approach to local symmetry-preserving operations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cubic polyhedra with icosahedral symmetry where all faces are pentagons or hexagons have been studied in chemistry and biology as well as mathematics. In chemistry one of these is buckminsterfullerene, a pure carbon cage with maximal symmetry, whereas in biology they describe the structure of spherical viruses. Parameterized operations to construct all such polyhedra were first described by Goldberg in 1937 in a mathematical context and later by Caspar and Klug -- not knowing about Goldberg's work -- in 1962 in a biological context. In the meantime Buckminster Fuller also used subdivided icosahedral structures for the construction of his geodesic domes. In 1971 Coxeter published a survey article that refers to these constructions. Subsequently, the literature often refers to the Goldberg-Coxeter construction. This construction is actually that of Caspar and Klug. Moreover, there are essential differences between this (Caspar/Klug/Coxeter) approach and the approaches of Fuller and of Goldberg. We will sketch the different approaches and generalize Goldberg's approach to a systematic one encompassing all local symmetry-preserving operations on polyhedra.
