Ovoids of Generalized Quadrangles of Order $(q, q^2-q)$ and Delsarte Cocliques in Related Strongly Regular Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate strongly regular graphs for which Hoffman's ratio bound and Cvetcović's inertia bound are equal. This means that $ve^- = m^-(e^- - k)$, where $v$ is the number of vertices, $k$ is the regularity, $e^-$ is the smallest eigenvalue, and $m^-$ is the multiplicity of $e^-$. We show that Delsarte cocliques do not exist for all Taylor's $2$-graphs and for point graphs of generalized quadrangles of order $(q,q^2-q)$ for infinitely many $q$. For cases where equality may hold, we show that for nearly all parameter sets, there are at most two Delsarte cocliques.
Terminal-Pairability in Complete Bipartite Graphs with Non-Bipartite Demands
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, Volume 775, 5 July 2019, Pages 16-25 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the terminal-pairability problem in the case when the base graph is a complete bipartite graph, and the demand graph is a (not necessarily bipartite) multigraph on the same vertex set. In computer science, this problem is known as the edge-disjoint paths problem. We improve the lower bound on the maximum value of $Δ(D)$ which still guarantees that the demand graph $D$ has a realization in $K_{n,n}$. We also solve the extremal problem on the number of edges, i.e., we determine the maximum number of edges which guarantees that a demand graph is realizable in $K_{n,n}$.

Lines in Euclidean Ramsey theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\ell_m$ be a sequence of $m$ points on a line with consecutive points of distance one. For every natural number $n$, we prove the existence of a red/blue-coloring of $\mathbb{E}^n$ containing no red copy of $\ell_2$ and no blue copy of $\ell_m$ for any $m \geq 2^{cn}$. This is best possible up to the constant $c$ in the exponent. It also answers a question of Erdős, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus from 1973. They asked if, for every natural number $n$, there is a set $K \subset \mathbb{E}^1$ and a red/blue-coloring of $\mathbb{E}^n$ containing no red copy of $\ell_2$ and no blue copy of $K$.

Ramsey properties and extending partial automorphisms for classes of finite structures
Published in Fundamenta Mathematicae 253 (2021), 121-153 • View Publication • BIB
We show that every free amalgamation class of finite structures with relations and (symmetric) partial functions is a Ramsey class when enriched by a free linear ordering of vertices. This is a common strengthening of the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem and the second and third authors' Ramsey theorem for finite models (that is, structures with both relations and functions). We also find subclasses with the ordering property. For languages with relational symbols and unary functions we also show the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA) of free amalgamation classes. These general results solve several conjectures and provide an easy Ramseyness test for many classes of structures.

Growth in varieties of multioperator algebras and Groebner bases in operads
Published in ISSAC'17. Proceedings of the International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation. ACM, New York, 2017. P. 373--380 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss algorithmic approach to growth of the codimension sequences of varieties of multilinear algebras, or, equivalently, the sequences of the component dimensions of algebraic operads. The (exponentional) generating functions of such sequences are called codimension series of varieties, or generating series of operads. We show that in general there does not exist an algorithm to decide whether the growth exponent of a codimension sequence of a variety defined by given finite sets of operations and identities is equal to a given rational number. In particular, we solve negatively a recent conjecture by Bremner and Dotsenko by showing that the set generating series of binary quadratic operads with bounded number of generators is infinite. Then we recall algorithms which in many cases calculate the codimension series in the form of a defining algebraic or differential equation. For a more general class of varieties, these algorithms give upper and lower bounds for the codimensions in terms of generating functions and asymptotical bounds for the growth of codimensions. The upper bound (based on an operadic version of the Golod--Shafarevich theorem) is just a formal power series satisfying an algebraic equation defined effectively by the generators and the identities of the variety. The first stage of an algorithm for the lower bound is the construction of a Groebner basis of the operad. If the Groebner basis happens to be finite and satisfies mild restrictions, a recent theorem by the author and Anton Khoroshkin guarantees that the desired generating function is either algebraic or differential algebraic. We describe algorithms producing such equations. In the case of infinite Groebner basis, these algorithms applied to its finite subsets give lower bounds for the generating function of the codimension sequence.

From generalized permutahedra to Grothendieck polynomials via flow polytopes
We study a family of dissections of flow polytopes arising from the subdivision algebra. To each dissection of a flow polytope, we associate a polynomial, called the left-degree polynomial, which we show is invariant of the dissection considered (proven independently by Grinberg). We prove that left-degree polynomials encode integer points of generalized permutahedra. Using that certain left-degree polynomials are related to Grothendieck polynomials, we resolve special cases of conjectures by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong regarding the saturated Newton polytope property of Grothendieck polynomials.

Supercongruences for rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds
Published in Adv. Math. 393 (2021) Article 108058 • View Publication • BIB
We establish the supercongruences for the fourteen rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds over $\mathbb Q$ conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas in 2003. Our first method is based on Dwork's theory of $p$-adic unit roots and it allows us to establish the supercongruences between the truncated hypergeometric series and the corresponding unit roots for ordinary primes. The other method makes use of the theory of hypergeometric motives, in particular, adapts the techniques from the recent work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on finite hypergeometric sums over $\mathbb Q$. Essential ingredients in executing the both approaches are the modularity of the underlying Calabi--Yau threefolds and a $p$-adic perturbation method applied to hypergeometric functions.

Spectral Radius and Hamiltonicity of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the Hamiltonicity of graphs with large minimum degree. Firstly, we present some conditions for a simple graph to be Hamilton-connected and traceable from every vertex in terms of the spectral radius of the graph or its complement respectively. Secondly, we give the conditions for a nearly balanced bipartite graph to be traceable in terms of spectral radius, signless Laplacian spectral radius of the graph or its quasi-complement respectively.

New bounds for Szemerédi's theorem, III: A polylogarithmic bound for $r_4(N)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Define $r_4(N)$ to be the largest cardinality of a set $A \subset \{1,\dots,N\}$ which does not contain four elements in arithmetic progression. In 1998 Gowers proved that \[ r_4(N) \ll N(\log \log N)^{-c}\] for some absolute constant $c>0$. In 2005, the authors improved this to \[ r_4(N) \ll N e^{-c\sqrt{\log\log N}}.\] In this paper we further improve this to \[ r_4(N) \ll N(\log N)^{-c},\] which appears to be the limit of our methods.

Near-optimal linear decision trees for k-SUM and related problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct near optimal linear decision trees for a variety of decision problems in combinatorics and discrete geometry. For example, for any constant $k$, we construct linear decision trees that solve the $k$-SUM problem on $n$ elements using $O(n \log^2 n)$ linear queries. Moreover, the queries we use are comparison queries, which compare the sums of two $k$-subsets; when viewed as linear queries, comparison queries are $2k$-sparse and have only $\{-1,0,1\}$ coefficients. We give similar constructions for sorting sumsets $A+B$ and for solving the SUBSET-SUM problem, both with optimal number of queries, up to poly-logarithmic terms. Our constructions are based on the notion of "inference dimension", recently introduced by the authors in the context of active classification with comparison queries. This can be viewed as another contribution to the fruitful link between machine learning and discrete geometry, which goes back to the discovery of the VC dimension.
Incidence Choosability of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An incidence of a graph G is a pair (v, e) where v is a vertex of G and e is an edge of G incident with v. Two incidences (v, e) and (w, f) of G are adjacent whenever (i) v = w, or (ii) e = f , or (iii) vw = e or f. An incidence p-colouring of G is a mapping from the set of incidences of G to the set of colours {1,. .. , p} such that every two adjacent incidences receive distinct colours. Incidence colouring has been introduced by Brualdi and Quinn Massey in 1993 and, since then, studied by several authors. In this paper, we introduce and study the list version of incidence colouring. We determine the exact value of -- or upper bounds on -- the incidence choice number of several classes of graphs, namely square grids, Halin graphs, cactuses and Hamiltonian cubic graphs.

Improved Spectral Clustering for Multi-Objective Controlled Islanding of Power Grid
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose a two-step algorithm for optimal controlled islanding that partitions a power grid into islands of limited volume while optimizing several criteria: high generator coherency inside islands, minimum power flow disruption due to teared lines, and minimum load shedding. Several spectral clustering strategies are used in the first step to lower the problem dimension (taking into account coherency and disruption only), and CPLEX tools for the mixed-integer quadratic problem are employed in the second step to choose a balanced partition of the aggregated grid that minimizes a combination of coherency, disruption and load shedding. A greedy heuristic efficiently limits search space by generating starting solution for exact algorithm. Dimension of the second-step problem depends only on the desired number of islands K instead of the dimension of the original grid. The algorithm is tested on standard systems with 118, 2383, and 9241 nodes showing high quality of partitions and competitive computation time.

On The Number Of Unlabeled Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper solves a problem that was stated by M. A. Harrison in 1973~\cite{harrison1973number}. This problem, that has remained open since then is concerned with counting equivalence classes of $n\times r$ binary matrices under row and column permutations. Let $I$ and $O$ denote two sets of vertices, where $I\cap O =Φ$, $|I| = n$, $|O| = r$, and $B_u(n,r)$ denote the set of unlabeled graphs whose edges connect vertices in $I$ and $O$. Harrison established that the number of equivalence classes of $n\times r$ binary matrices is equal to the number of unlabeled graphs in $B_u(n,r).$ He also computed the number of such matrices (hence such graphs) for small values of $n$ and $r$ without providing an asymptotic formula $|B_u(n,r)|.$ Here, such an asymptotic formula is provided by proving the following two-sided equality using Polya's Counting Theorem.
Linear syzygies, hyperbolic Coxeter groups and regularity
Published in Compositio Math. 155 (2019), 1076-1097 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the virtual cohomological dimension of a Coxeter group is essentially the regularity of the Stanley--Reisner ring of its nerve. Using this connection between geometric group theory and commutative algebra, as well as techniques from the theory of hyperbolic Coxeter groups, we study the behavior of the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of square-free quadratic monomial ideals. We construct examples of such ideals which exhibit arbitrarily high regularity after linear syzygies for arbitrarily many steps. We give a doubly logarithmic bound on the regularity as a function of the number of variables if these ideals are Cohen--Macaulay.

On distinct cross-ratios and related growth problems
It is shown that for a finite set $A$ of four or more complex numbers, the cardinality of the set $C[A]$ of all cross-ratios generated by quadruples of pair-wise distinct elements of $A$ is $|C[A]|\gg |A|^{2+\frac{2}{11}}\log^{-\frac{6}{11}} |A|$ and without the logarithmic factor in the real case. The set $C=C[A]$ always grows under both addition and multiplication. The cross-ratio arises, in particular, in the study of the open question of the minimum number of triangle areas, with two vertices in a given non-collinear finite point set in the plane and the third one at the fixed origin. The above distinct cross-ratio bound implies a new lower bound for the latter question, and enables one to show growth of the set $\sin(A-A),\;A\subset \mathbb R/π\mathbb Z$ under multiplication. It seems reasonable to conjecture that more-fold product, as well as sum sets of this set or $C$ continue growing ad infinitum.

On the Approximate Asymptotic Statistical Independence of the Permanents of 0-1 Matrices
We consider the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with all column and row sums equal r. We give this ensemble the uniform weighting to construct a measure E. We know from the work of Wanless and Pernici that E(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)) In this paper we prove E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^2)) where E_1 is the measure constructed on the ensemble of n x n 0 - 1 matrices with non-negative integer entries realized as the sum of r random permutation matrices. E_1 is often used as an "approximation" to E. We have computer evidence for E_1(prod_{i=1}^N (perm_{m_i}(A)) = prod_{i=1}^N (E_1(perm_{m_i}(A)) * (1+ O(1/n^4)).

Ulam Sequences and Ulam Sets
The Ulam sequence is given by $a_1 =1, a_2 = 2$, and then, for $n \geq 3$, the element $a_n$ is defined as the smallest integer that can be written as the sum of two distinct earlier elements in a unique way. This gives the sequence $1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 16, \dots$, which has a mysterious quasi-periodic behavior that is not understood. Ulam's definition naturally extends to higher dimensions: for a set of initial vectors $\left\{v_1, \dots, v_k\right\} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we define a sequence by repeatedly adding the smallest elements that can be uniquely written as the sum of two distinct vectors already in the set. The resulting sets have very rich structure that turns out to be universal for many commuting binary operations. We give examples of different types of behavior, prove several universality results, and describe new unexplained phenomena.
Induced Ramsey-type results and binary predicates for point sets
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24 (2017), Issue 4, P4.24, 22 pp • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $p$ be positive integers and let $Q$ be a finite point set in general position in the plane. We say that $Q$ is $(k,p)$-Ramsey if there is a finite point set $P$ such that for every $k$-coloring $c$ of $\binom{P}{p}$ there is a subset $Q'$ of $P$ such that $Q'$ and $Q$ have the same order type and $\binom{Q'}{p}$ is monochromatic in $c$. Nešetřil and Valtr proved that for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$, all point sets are $(k,1)$-Ramsey. They also proved that for every $k \ge 2$ and $p \ge 2$, there are point sets that are not $(k,p)$-Ramsey. As our main result, we introduce a new family of $(k,2)$-Ramsey point sets, extending a result of Nešetřil and Valtr. We then use this new result to show that for every $k$ there is a point set $P$ such that no function $Γ$ that maps ordered pairs of distinct points from $P$ to a set of size $k$ can satisfy the following "local consistency" property: if $Γ$ attains the same values on two ordered triples of points from $P$, then these triples have the same orientation. Intuitively, this implies that there cannot be such a function that is defined locally and determines the orientation of point triples.

Ramsey Classes with Closure Operations (Selected Combinatorial Applications)
We state the Ramsey property of classes of ordered structures with closures and given local properties. This generalises many old and new results: the Nešetřil-Rödl Theorem, the author's Ramsey lift of bowtie-free graphs as well as the Ramsey Theorem for Finite Models (i.e. structures with both functions and relations) thus providing the ultimate generalisation of Structural Ramsey Theorem. We give here a more concise reformulation of recent authors paper "All those Ramsey classes (Ramsey classes with closures and forbidden homomorphisms)" and the main purpose of this paper is to show several applications. Particularly we prove the Ramsey property of ordered sets with equivalences on the power set, Ramsey theorem for Steiner systems, Ramsey theorem for resolvable designs and a partial Ramsey type results for $H$-factorizable graphs. All of these results are natural, easy to state, yet proofs involve most of the theory developed.
