Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider several generalizations of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem for G-spaces and apply these results to Tucker type lemmas for G-simplicial complexes and PL-manifolds.

Generalized Riordan arrays and zero generalized Pascal matrices
Generalized Pascal matrix whose elements are generalized binomial coefficients is included in the group of generalized Riordan arrays. There is a special set of generalized Riordan arrays defined by parameter $q$. If $q=0$, they are ordinary Riordan arrays, if $q=1$, they are exponential Riordan arrays. In other cases, except $q=-1$, they are arrays associated with the $q$-binomial coefficients as well as the exponential Riordan arrays are associated with the ordinary binomial coefficients. Case $q=-1$ does not fit into the concept of generalized Riordan arrays, but it is necessary to expand for it. Introduced a special class of matrices, each of which is a limiting case of a certain set of generalized Pascal matrices. It is shown that every such matrix included in the matrix group similar to the generalized Riordan group.

Quantifying the degree of average contraction of Collatz orbits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We here elaborate on a quantitative argument to support the validity of the Collatz conjecture, also known as the (3x + 1) or Syracuse conjecture. The analysis is structured as follows. First, three distinct fixed points are found for the third iterate of the Collatz map, which hence organise in a period 3 orbit of the original map. These are 1, 2 and 4, the elements which define the unique attracting cycle, as hypothesised by Collatz. To carry out the calculation we write the positive integers in modulo 8 (mod8 ), obtain a closed analytical form for the associated map and determine the transitions that yield contracting or expanding iterates in the original, infinite-dimensional, space of positive integers. Then, we consider a Markov chain which runs on the reduced space of mod8 congruence classes of integers. The transition probabilities of the Markov chain are computed from the deterministic map, by employing a measure that is invariant for the map itself. Working in this setting, we demonstrate that the stationary distribution sampled by the stochastic system induces a contracting behaviour for the orbits of the deterministic map on the original space of the positive integers. Sampling the equilibrium distribution on the congruence classes mod8^m for any m, which amounts to arbitrarily reducing the degree of imposed coarse graining, returns an identical conclusion.

Mixing for three-term progressions in finite simple groups
Published in Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 165 (2018), no. 2, 279-286 • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Gowers, Tao proved that any $A\times B\times C\subset SL_d(\mathbb{F}_q)^3$ contains $|A||B||C|/|SL_d(\mathbb{F}_q)|+O_d(|SL_d(\mathbb{F}_q)|^2/q^{\min(d-1,2)/8})$ three-term progressions $(x,xy,xy^2)$. Using a modification of Tao's argument, we prove such a mixing result for three-term progressions in all nonabelian finite simple groups except for $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ with an error term that depends on the degree of quasirandomness of the group. This argument also gives an alternative proof of Tao's result when $d>2$, but with the error term $O(|SL_d(\mathbb{F}_q)|^2/q^{(d-1)/24})$.
Stirling permutations, marked permutations and Stirling derangements
In this paper we introduce the definition of marked permutations. We first present a bijection between Stirling permutations and marked permutations. We then present an involution on Stirling derangements. Furthermore, we present a symmetric bivariate enumerative polynomials on $r$-colored marked permutations. Finally, we give an explanation of $r$-colored marked permutations by using the language of combinatorial objects.
The boundary length and point spectrum enumeration of partial chord diagrams using cut and join recursion
Published in Trav. Math. 25 (2017) 213 • Search Publication
We introduce the boundary length and point spectrum, as a joint generalization of the boundary length spectrum and boundary point spectrum in arXiv:1307.0967. We establish by cut-and-join methods that the number of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum satisfies a recursion relation, which combined with an initial condition determines these numbers uniquely. This recursion relation is equivalent to a second order, non-linear, algebraic partial differential equation for the generating function of the numbers of partial chord diagrams filtered by the boundary length and point spectrum.

Zero-sum subsequences in bounded-sum $\{-1, 1\}$-sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
The following result gives the flavor of this paper: Let $t$, $k$ and $q$ be integers such that $q\geq 0$, $0\leq t < k$ and $t \equiv k \,({\rm mod}\, 2)$, and let $s\in [0,t+1]$ be the unique integer satisfying $s \equiv q + \frac{k-t-2}{2} \,({\rm mod} \, (t+2))$. Then for any integer $n$ such that \[n \ge \max\left\{k,\frac{1}{2(t+2)}k^2 + \frac{q-s}{t+2}k - \frac{t}{2} + s\right\}\] and any function $f:[n]\to \{-1,1\}$ with $|\sum_{i=1}^nf(i)| \le q$, there is a set $B \subseteq [n]$ of $k$ consecutive integers with $|\sum_{y\in B}f(y)| \le t$. Moreover, this bound is sharp for all the parameters involved and a characterization of the extremal sequences is given. This and other similar results involving different subsequences are presented, including decompositions of sequences into subsequences of bounded weight.

Clique coloring of dense random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The clique chromatic number of a graph G=(V,E) is the minimum number of colors in a vertex coloring so that no maximal (with respect to containment) clique is monochromatic. We prove that the clique chromatic number of the binomial random graph G=G(n,1/2) is, with high probability, Ω(log n). This settles a problem of McDiarmid, Mitsche and Pralat who proved that it is O(log n) with high probability.
A normal quotient analysis for some families of oriented four-valent graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We analyse the normal quotient structure of several infinite families of finite connected edge-transitive, four-valent oriented graphs. These families were singled out by Marusic and others to illustrate various different internal structures for these graphs in terms of their alternating cycles (cycles in which consecutive edges have opposite orientations). Studying the normal quotients gives fresh insights into these oriented graphs: in particular we discovered some unexpected `cross-overs' between these graph families when we formed normal quotients. We determine which of these oriented graphs are `basic', in the sense that their only proper normal quotients are degenerate. Moreover, we show that the three types of edge-orientations studied are the only orientations, of the underlying undirected graphs in these families, which are invariant under a group action which is both vertex-transitive and edge-transitive.

Basic facts concerning supermodular functions
Elementary facts and observations on the cone of supermodular set functions are recalled. The manuscript deals with such operations with set functions which preserve supermodularity and the emphasis is put on those such operations which even preserve extremality (of a supermodular function). These involve a few self-transformations of the cone of supermodular set functions. Moreover, projections to the (less-dimensional) linear space of set functions for a subset of the variable set are discussed. Finally, several extensions to the (more-dimensional) linear space of set functions for a superset of the variable set are shown to be both preserving supermodularity and extremality.

Generalised Paley graphs with a product structure
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is Cartesian decomposable if it is isomorphic to a Cartesian product of (more than one) strictly smaller graphs, each of which has more than one vertex and admits no such decomposition. These smaller graphs are called the Cartesian-prime factors of the Cartesian decomposition, and were shown, by Sabidussi and Vizing independently, to be uniquely determined up to isomorphism. We characterise by their parameters those generalised Paley graphs which are Cartesian decomposable, and we prove that for such graphs, the Cartesian-prime factors are themselves smaller generalised Paley graphs. This generalises a result of Lim and the second author which deals with the case where all the Cartesian-prime factors are complete graphs. These results contribute to the determination, by parameters, of generalised Paley graphs with automorphism groups larger than the 1-dimensional affine subgroups used to define them.

A Generalization of the Eulerian Numbers
In the present paper we generalize the Eulerian numbers (also of the second and third orders). The generalization is connected with an autonomous first-order differential equation, solutions of which are used to obtain integral representations of some numbers, including the Bernoulli numbers.

On the structure of subsets of the discrete cube with small edge boundary
Published • View Publication • BIB
The edge isoperimetric inequality in the discrete cube specifies, for each pair of integers $m$ and $n$, the minimum size $g_n(m)$ of the edge boundary of an $m$-element subset of $\{0,1\}^{n}$; the extremal families (up to automorphisms of the discrete cube) are initial segments of the lexicographic ordering on $\{0,1\}^n$. We show that for any $m$-element subset $\mathcal{F} \subset \{0,1\}^n$ and any integer $l$, if the edge boundary of $\mathcal{F}$ has size at most $g_n(m)+l$, then there exists an extremal family $\mathcal{G} \subset \{0,1\}^n$ such that $|\mathcal{F} Δ\mathcal{G}| \leq Cl$, where $C$ is an absolute constant. This is best-possible, up to the value of $C$. Our result can be seen as a `stability' version of the edge isoperimetric inequality in the discrete cube, and as a discrete analogue of the seminal stability result of Fusco, Maggi and Pratelli concerning the isoperimetric inequality in Euclidean space.

A family of multimagic squares based on large sets of orthogonal arrays
Large set of orthogonal arrays (LOA) were introduced by D. R. Stinson, and it is also used to construct multimagic squares recently. In this paper, multimagic squares based on strong double LOA are further investigated. It is proved that there exists an MS$(q^{2t-1},t)$ for any prime power $q\geq 2t-1$ with $t\geq3$, which provided a new family of multimagic squares.

Completion of tree metrics and rank-2 matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by applications to low-rank matrix completion, we give a combinatorial characterization of the independent sets in the algebraic matroid associated to the collection of $m\times n$ rank-2 matrices and $n\times n$ skew-symmetric rank-2 matrices. Our approach is to use tropical geometry to reduce this to a problem about phylogenetic trees which we then solve. In particular, we give a combinatorial description of the collections of pairwise distances between several taxa that may be arbitrarily prescribed while still allowing the resulting dissimilarity map to be completed to a tree metric.

Sorting via chip-firing
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 24(3), 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate a variant of the chip-firing process on the infinite path graph: rather than treating the chips as indistinguishable, we label them with positive integers. To fire an unstable vertex, i.e. a vertex with more than one chip, we choose any two chips at that vertex and move the lesser-labeled chip to the left and the greater-labeled chip to the right. This labeled version of the chip-firing process exhibits a remarkable confluence property, similar to but subtler than the confluence that prevails for unlabeled chip-firing: when all chips start at the origin and the number of chips is even, the chips always end up in sorted order. Our proof of sorting relies upon an independently interesting lemma concerning unlabeled chip- firing which says that stabilization preserves a natural partial order on configurations. We also discuss some extensions of this sorting phenomenon to other graphs (variants of the infinite path), to other initial configurations, and to other Cartan-Killing types.

A Brief Introduction to Shannon's Information Theory
This article serves as a brief introduction to the Shannon information theory. Concepts of information, Shannon entropy and channel capacity are mainly covered. All these concepts are developed in a totally combinatorial flavor. Some issues usually not addressed in the literature are discussed here as well. In particular, we show that it seems we can define channel capacity differently which allows us to potentially transmit more messages in a fixed sufficient long time duration. However, for a channel carrying a finite number of letters, the channel capacity unfortunately remains the same as the Shannon limit.

F-polynomial formula from continued fractions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For cluster algebras from surfaces, there is a known formula for cluster variables and F-polynomials in terms of the perfect matchings of snake graphs. If the cluster algebra has trivial coefficients, there is also a known formula for cluster variables in terms of continued fractions. In this paper, we extend this result to cluster algebras with principal coefficients by producing a formula for the F-polynomials in terms of continued fractions.

On the size of graphs without repeated cycle lengths
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 232 (2017), 226-229 • View Publication • BIB
In 1975, P. Erdös proposed the problem of determining the maximum number $f(n)$ of edges in a graph of $n$ vertices in which any two cycles are of different lengths. In this paper, it is proved that $$f(n)\geq n+\frac{107}{3}t+\frac{7}{3}$$ for $t=1260r+169 \,\ (r\geq 1)$ and $n \geq \frac{2119}{4}t^{2}+87978t+\frac{15957}{4}$. Consequently, $\lim \inf_{n \to \infty} {f(n)-n \over \sqrt n} \geq \sqrt {2 + \frac{7654}{19071}},$ which is better than the previous bounds $\sqrt 2$ [Y. Shi, Discrete Math. 71(1988), 57-71], $\sqrt {2.4}$ [C. Lai, Australas. J. Combin. 27(2003), 101-105]. The conjecture $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} {f(n)-n\over \sqrt n}=\sqrt {2.4}$ is not true.
Finite edge-transitive oriented graphs of valency four with cyclic normal quotients
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study finite four-valent graphs Gamma admitting an edge-transitive group G of automorphisms such that G determines and preserves an edge-orientation on Gamma, and such that at least one G-normal quotient is a cycle (a quotient modulo the orbits of a normal subgroup of G). We show on the one hand that the number of distinct cyclic G-normal quotients can be unboundedly large. On the other hand existence of independent cyclic G-normal quotients (that is, they are not extendable to a common cyclic G-normal quotient) places severe restrictions on the graph Gamma and we classify all examples. We show there are five infinite families of such pairs (Gamma, G), and in particular that all such graphs have at least one normal quotient which is an unoriented cycle. We compare this new approach with existing treatments for the sub-class of weak metacirculant graphs with these properties, finding that only two infinite families of examples occur in common from both analyses. Several open problems are posed.
