New identities for binary Krawtchouk polynomials, binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers
We obtain new combinatorial identities for integral values of binary Krawtchouk polynomials $K^{2m}_p(x)$, $0\le p\le 2m$, by computing the characters of the $p$-exterior representations on certain elements of order 2 of $\mathrm{SO}(2m)$. From this identities, we deduce several new relations for binomial coefficients and Catalan numbers.

A Brooks type theorem for the maximum local edge connectivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, let $\cn(G)$ and $\la(G)$ denote the chromatic number of $G$ and the maximum local edge connectivity of $G$, respectively. A result of Dirac \cite{Dirac53} implies that every graph $G$ satisfies $\cn(G)\leq \la(G)+1$. In this paper we characterize the graphs $G$ for which $\cn(G)=\la(G)+1$. The case $\la(G)=3$ was already solved by Alboulker {\em et al.\,} \cite{AlboukerV2016}. We show that a graph $G$ with $\la(G)=k\geq 4$ satisfies $\cn(G)=k+1$ if and only if $G$ contains a block which can be obtained from copies of $K_{k+1}$ by repeated applications of the Hajós join.

The Matching Process and Independent Process in Random Regular Graphs and Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we analyze two random greedy processes on sparse random graphs and hypergraphs with a given degree sequence. First we analyze the matching process, which builds a set of disjoint edges one edge at a time; then we analyze the independent process, which builds an independent set of vertices one vertex at a time. We use the differential equations method and apply a general theorem of Warnke. Our main contribution is to significantly reduce the associated systems of differential equations and simplify the expression for the final size of the matching or independent set.

Computing GIT-fans with symmetry and the Mori chamber decomposition of $\bar{M}_{0,6}$
Published in Math. Comp. 89 (2020), 3003-3021 • View Publication • BIB
We propose an algorithm to compute the GIT-fan for torus actions on affine varieties with symmetries. The algorithm combines computational techniques from commutative algebra, convex geometry and group theory. We have implemented our algorithm in the Singular library gitfan.lib. Using our implementation, we compute the Mori chamber decomposition of the cone of movable divisors of $\bar{M}_{0,6}$.

A Tight Bound for Minimal Connectivity
For minimally $k$-connected graphs on $n$ vertices, Mader proved a tight lower bound for the number $|V_k|$ of vertices of degree $k$ in dependence on $n$ and $k$. Oxley observed 1981 that in many cases a considerably better bound can be given if $m := |E|$ is used as additional parameter, i.e. in dependence on $m$, $n$ and $k$. It was left open to determine whether Oxley's bound is best possible. We show that this is not the case, but propose a closely related bound that deviates from Oxley's long-standing one only for small values of $m$. We prove that this new bound is best possible. The bound contains Mader's bound as special case.
The second Feng-Rao number for codes coming from telescopic semigroups
In this manuscript we show that the second Feng-Rao number of any telescopic numerical semigroup agrees with the multiplicity of the semigroup. To achieve this result we first study the behavior of Apéry sets under gluings of numerical semigroups. These results provide a bound for the second Hamming weight of one-point Algebraic Geometry codes, which improves upon other estimates such as the Griesmer Order Bound.

On the k-regularity of the k-adic valuation of Lucas sequences
Published in Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux 30 (2018), 227-237 • View Publication • BIB
For integers $k \geq 2$ and $n \neq 0$, let $v_k(n)$ denotes the greatest nonnegative integer $e$ such that $k^e$ divides $n$. Moreover, let $u_n$ be a nondegenerate Lucas sequence satisfying $u_0 = 0$, $u_1 = 1$, and $u_{n + 2} = a u_{n + 1} + b u_n$, for some integers $a$ and $b$. Shu and Yao showed that for any prime number $p$ the sequence $v_p(u_{n + 1})$ is $p$-regular, while Medina and Rowland found the rank of $v_p(F_{n + 1})$, where $F_n$ is the $n$-th Fibonacci number. We prove that if $k$ and $b$ are relatively prime then $v_k(u_{n + 1})$ is a $k$-regular sequence, and for $k$ a prime number we also determine its rank. Furthermore, as an intermediate result, we give explicit formulas for $v_k(u_n)$, generalizing a previous theorem of Sanna concerning $p$-adic valuations of Lucas sequences.

Gowers' Ramsey theorem for generalized tetris operations
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 149 (2017), 101--114 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a generalization of Gowers' theorem for $\mathrm{FIN}_{k}$ where, instead of the single tetris operation $T:\mathrm{FIN}_{k}\rightarrow \mathrm{FIN}_{k-1}$, one considers all maps from $\mathrm{FIN}_{k}$ to $\mathrm{FIN}_{j}$ for $0\leq j\leq k$ arising from nondecreasing surjections $f:\left\{ 0,1,\ldots ,k+1\right\} \rightarrow \left\{ 0,1,\ldots ,j+1\right\} $. This answers a question of Bartošová and Kwiatkowska. We also prove a common generalization of such a result and the Galvin--Glazer--Hindman theorem on finite products, in the setting of layered partial semigroups introduced by Farah, Hindman, and McLeod.
Regular colorings and factors of regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $(r-1,1)$-coloring of an $r$-regular graph $G$ is an edge coloring such that each vertex is incident to $r-1$ edges of one color and $1$ edge of a different color. In this paper, we completely characterize all $4$-regular pseudographs (graphs that may contain parallel edges and loops) which do not have a $(3,1)$-coloring. An $\{r-1,1\}$-factor of an $r$-regular graph is a spanning subgraph in which each vertex has degree either $r-1$ or $1$. We prove various conditions that that must hold for any vertex-minimal $5$-regular pseudographs without $(4,1)$-colorings or without $\{4,1\}$-factors. Finally, for each $r\geq 6$ we construct graphs that are not $(r-1,1)$-colorable and, more generally, are not $(r-t,t)$-colorable for small $t$.

Terminal chords in connected chord diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
Rooted connected chord diagrams form a nice class of combinatorial objects. Recently they were shown to index solutions to certain Dyson-Schwinger equations in quantum field theory. Key to this indexing role are certain special chords which are called terminal chords. Terminal chords provide a number of combinatorially interesting parameters on rooted connected chord diagrams which have not been studied previously. Understanding these parameters better has implications for quantum field theory. Specifically, we show that the distributions of the number of terminal chords and the number of adjacent terminal chords are asymptotically Gaussian with logarithmic means, and we prove that the average index of the first terminal chord is $2n/3$. Furthermore, we obtain a method to determine any next-to${}^i$ leading log expansion of the solution to these Dyson-Schwinger equations, and have asymptotic information about the coefficients of the log expansions.

New congruences for $\ell$-regular overpartitions
Published in Integers 17 (2017), Paper No. A22 • Search Publication
Recently, Shen (2016) and Alanazi et al. (2016) studied the arithmetic properties of the $\ell$-regular overpartition function $\overline{A}_\ell (n)$, which counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ into parts not divisible by $\ell$. In this note, we will present some new congruences modulo $5$ when $\ell$ is a power of $5$.

Primitive transformation shift registers of order two over fields of characteristic two
We consider the problem of enumeration of primitive TSRs of order n over any finite field. Here we prove the existence of primitive TSRs of order two over binary field extensions. Moreover we give a general search algorithm for primitive TSRs of odd order over any finite field and in particular of order two over fields of characteristic 2. We also give certain bounds on the number of primitive TSRs in special cases and propose a conjecture regarding the existence of certain special type of primitive polynomials, which answers the existence of primitive TSRs of odd order n over Fqm and primitive TSRs of order greater than 3 over binary field extensions..

All binomial identities are orderable
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main result of this paper is to show that all binomial identities are orderable. This is a natural statement in the combinatorial theory of finite sets, which can also be applied in distributed computing to derive new strong bounds on the round complexity of the weak symmetry breaking task. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of a fundamental binomial identity and find an infinite family of values, other than the prime powers, for which no fundamental binomial identity can exist.

Construction and enumeration of circuits capable of guiding a miniature vehicle
Published • View Publication • BIB
In contrast to traditional toy tracks, a patented system allows the creation of a large number of tracks with a minimal number of pieces, and whose loops always close properly. These circuits strongly resemble traditional self-avoiding polygons (whose explicit enumeration has not yet been resolved for an arbitrary number of squares) yet there are numerous differences, notably the fact that the geometric constraints are different than those of self-avoiding polygons. We present the methodology allowing the construction and enumeration of all of the possible tracks containing a given number of pieces. For small numbers of pieces, several variants are proposed which allow the consideration or not of the fact that the obtained circuits are identical up to a given isometry. For greater numbers of pieces, only an estimation will be offered. In the latter case, a randomly construction of circuits is also given. We will give some routes for generalizations for similar problems.
Coronas and domination subdivision number of a graph

In this paper, for a graph G and a family of partitions P of vertex neighborhoods of G, we define the general corona G \circ P of G. Among several properties of this new operation, we focus on application general coronas to a new kind of characterization of trees with the domination subdivision number equal to 3.

A Preferential Attachment Process Approaching the Rado Graph
Published in Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society 63 (2020) 443-455 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a simple Preferential Attachment graph process, which begins with a finite graph, and in which a new $(t+1)$st vertex is added at each subsequent time step $t$, and connected to each previous vertex $u \leq t$ with probability $\frac{d_u(t)}{t}$ where $d_u(t)$ is the degree of $u$ at time $t$. We analyse the graph obtained as the infinite limit of this process, and show that so long as the initial finite graph is neither edgeless nor complete, with probability 1 the outcome will be a copy of the Rado graph augmented with a finite number of either isolated or universal vertices.

Brill-Noether varieties of k-gonal curves
Published in Adv. Math. 312 (2017), 46-63 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a general curve of fixed gonality k and genus g. We propose an estimate for the dimension of the variety $W^r_d(C)$ of special linear series on C, by solving an analogous problem in tropical geometry. Using work of Coppens and Martens, we prove that this estimate is exactly correct if k is at least g/5 + 2, and is an upper bound in all other cases. We also completely characterize the cases in which $W^r_d(C)$ has the same dimension as for a general curve of genus g.
On the parametric behavior of A-hypergeometric series
We describe the parametric behavior of the series solutions of an A-hypergeometric system. More precisely, we construct explicit stratifications of the parameter space such that, on each stratum, the series solutions of the system are holomorphic.

Refining the Hierarchies of Classes of Geometric Intersection Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We analyse properties of geometric intersection graphs to show the strict containment between some natural classes of geometric intersection graphs. In particular, we show the following properties: - A graph $G$ is outerplanar if and only if the 1-subdivision of $G$ is outer-segment. - For each integer $k\ge 1$, the class of intersection graphs of segments with $k$ different lengths is a strict subclass of the class of intersection graphs of segments with $k+1$ different lengths. - For each integer $k\ge 1$, the class of intersection graphs of disks with $k$ different sizes is a strict subclass of the class of intersection graphs of disks with $k+1$ different sizes. - The class of outer-segment graphs is a strict subclass of the class of outer-string graphs.

The unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset
We prove the unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset, which was conjectured by Kirillov. First, based on a result due to Stanley, we show that this polynomial coincides with the $W$-polynomial for the zig-zag poset with some natural labeling. Then, its unimodality immediately follows from a result of Gasharov, which states that the $W$-polynomials of naturally labeled graded posets of rank $1$ or $2$ are unimodal.
