On chromatic functors and stable partitions of graphs
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 60 (2017) 154-164 • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic functor of a simple graph is a functorization of the chromatic polynomial. M. Yoshinaga showed in \cite{Yoshinaga2015} that two finite graphs have isomorphic chromatic functors if and only if they have the same chromatic polynomial. The key ingredient in the proof is the use of stable partitions of graphs. The latter is shown to be closely related to chromatic functors. In this note, we further investigate some interesting properties of chromatic functors associated to simple graphs using stable partitions. Our first result is the determination of the group of natural automorphisms of the chromatic functor, which is in general a larger group than the automorphism group of the graph. The second result is that the composition of the chromatic functor associated to a finite graph restricted to the category $\mathrm{FI}$ of finite sets and injections with the free functor into the category of complex vector spaces yields a consistent sequence of representations of symmetric groups which is representation stable in the sense of Church-Farb \cite{Church2013}.

The Signed Positive Semidefinite Matrix Completion Problem for Odd-$K_4$ Minor Free Signed Graphs
We give a signed generalization of Laurent's theorem that characterizes feasible positive semidefinite matrix completion problems in terms of metric polytopes. Based on this result, we give a characterization of the maximum rank completions of the signed positive semidefinite matrix completion problem for odd-$K_4$ minor free signed graphs. The analysis can also be used to bound the minimum rank over the completions and to characterize uniquely solvable completion problems for odd-$K_4$ minor free signed graphs. As a corollary we derive a characterization of the universal rigidity of odd-$K_4$ minor free spherical tensegrities, and also a characterization of signed graphs whose signed Colin de Verdière parameter $ν$ is bounded by two, recently shown by Arav et al.

On the stabilisers of locally 2-transitive graphs
For a connected locally $(G,s$)-arc-transitive graph $Γ$ with $s\geqslant 2$ and an edge ${v,w}$, determining the amalgam $(G_v,G_w,G_{vw})$ is a fundamental problem in the area of symmetrical graph theory, but it is very difficult. In this paper, we give a classification of $(G_v,G_w,G_{vw})$ in the case where the vertex stabilisers $G_v$ and $G_w$ are faithful on their neighbourhoods, which shows that except for the case $G_v\cong G_w$, there are exactly 16 such triples.

A classification of tetravalent edge-transitive metacirculants of odd order
In this paper a classification of tetravalent edge-transitive metacirculants is given. It is shown that a tetravalent edge-transitive metacirculant $Γ$ is a normal graph except for four known graphs. If further, $Γ$ is a Cayley graph of a non-abelian metacyclic group, then $Γ$ is half-transitive.
Correlation bound for distant parts of factor of IID processes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study factor of i.i.d. processes on the $d$-regular tree for $d \geq 3$. We show that if such a process is restricted to two distant connected subgraphs of the tree, then the two parts are basically uncorrelated. More precisely, any functions of the two parts have correlation at most $k(d-1) / (\sqrt{d-1})^k$, where $k$ denotes the distance of the subgraphs. This result can be considered as a quantitative version of the fact that factor of i.i.d. processes have trivial 1-ended tails.
Topology of unavoidable complexes
The partition number $π(K)$ of a simplicial complex $K\subset 2^{[m]}$ is the minimum integer $ν$ such that for each partition $A_1\uplus\ldots\uplus A_ν= [m]$ of $[m]$ at least one of the sets $A_i$ is in $K$. A complex $K$ is $r$-unavoidable if $π(K)\leq r$. We say that a complex $K$ is globally $r$-non-embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^d$ if for each continuous map $f: | K| \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$ there exist $r$ vertex disjoint faces $σ_1,\ldots, σ_r$ of $| K|$ such that $f(σ_1)\cap\ldots\cap f(σ_r)\neq\emptyset$. Motivated by the problems of Tverberg-Van Kampen-Flores type we prove several results (Theorems 3.6, 3.9, 4.6) which link together the combinatorics and topology of these two classes of complexes. One of our central observations (Theorem 4.6), summarizing and extending results of G. Schild, B. Grünbaum and many others, is that interesting examples of (globally) $r$-non-embeddable complexes can be found among the joins $K = K_1\ast\ldots\ast K_s$ of $r$-unavoidable complexes.

Genomic Tableaux
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 45 (2017), Issue 3, pp 649-685 • View Publication • BIB
We explain how genomic tableaux [Pechenik-Yong '15] are a semistandard complement to increasing tableaux [Thomas-Yong '09]. From this perspective, one inherits genomic versions of jeu de taquin, Knuth equivalence, infusion and Bender-Knuth involutions, as well as Schur functions from (shifted) semistandard Young tableaux theory. These are applied to obtain new Littlewood-Richardson rules for K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians (after [Buch '02]) and maximal orthogonal Grassmannians (after [Clifford-Thomas-Yong '14], [Buch-Ravikumar '12]). For the unsolved case of Lagrangian Grassmannians, sharp upper and lower bounds using genomic tableaux are conjectured.

Supercharacters for Normal Supercharacter Theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
In order to find a tractable theory to substitute for the wild character theory of the group of $n\times n$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, André and Yan introduced the notion of supercharacter theory. In this paper, we construct a supercharacter theory from an arbitrary set $S$ of normal subgroups of $G$. We call such supercharacter theory the normal supercharacter theory generated by $S$. It is shown that normal supercharacter theories are integral, and a recursive formula for supercharacters of the normal supercharacter theory is provided. The normal supercharacter theory provides many substitutions for wild character theories. Also, we indicate that the superclasses of the normal supercharacter theory generated by all normal subgroups of $G$ are given by certain values on the primitive central idempotents. We study the connection between the finest normal supercharacter theory and faithful irreducible characters. Moreover, an algorithm is presented to construct the supercharacter table of the finest normal supercharacter theory from the character table. Finally, We justify that normal supercharacter theories cannot be obtained by preceding supercharacter theory constructions.

A glimpse into continuous combinatorics of posets, polytopes, and matroids
This is both an expository and research paper where we advocate a systematic study of continuous analogues of finite partially ordered sets, convex polytopes, oriented matroids, arrangements of subspaces, finite simplicial complexes, and other combinatorial structures. Among the illustrative examples are an Euler formula for a class of `continuous convex polytopes' (conjectured by Kalai and Wigderson), a duality result for a class of `continuous matroids', a calculation of the Euler characteristic of ideals in the Grassmannian poset (related to a problem of Gian-Carlo Rota), an exposition of the `homotopy complementation formula' for topological posets and its relation to the results of Kallel and Karoui about `weighted barycenter spaces' and a conjecture of Vassiliev about simplicial resolutions of singularities. We also include an extension of the index inequality (Sarkaria's inequality) based on interpreting diagrams of spaces as continuous posets.

Belief Propagation on replica symmetric random factor graph models
Published • View Publication • BIB
According to physics predictions, the free energy of random factor graph models that satisfy a certain "static replica symmetry" condition can be calculated via the Belief Propagation message passing scheme [Krzakala et al., PNAS 2007]. Here we prove this conjecture for two general classes of random factor graph models, namely Poisson random factor graphs and random regular factor graphs. Specifically, we show that the messages constructed just as in the case of acyclic factor graphs asymptotically satisfy the Belief Propagation equations and that the free energy density is given by the Bethe free energy formula.
Tiling directed graphs with tournaments

The Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem states that for any integer $r \ge 1$ and any multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices and $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1/r)n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. We prove a very general analogue of this result for directed graphs: for any integer $r \ge 4$ and any sufficiently large multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a directed graph on $n$ vertices and every vertex is incident to at least $2(1 - 1/r)n - 1$ directed edges, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs of size $r$ each of which contain every tournament on $r$ vertices. A related Turán-type result is also proven.

Chromatic roots and minor-closed families of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a minor-closed class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$, what is the infimum of the non-trivial roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G \in \mathcal{G}$? When $\mathcal{G}$ is the class of all graphs, the answer is known to be $32/27$. We answer this question exactly for three minor-closed classes of graphs. Furthermore, we conjecture precisely when the value is larger than $32/27$.

Semirings for temporal network analysis
In the article, we describe a new algebraic approach to the temporal network analysis based on the notion of temporal quantities. We define the semiring for computing the foremost journey and the traveling semirings for the analysis of temporal networks where the latency is given, the waiting times are arbitrary, and some other information on the links are known. We use the operations in the traveling semiring to compute a generalized temporal betweenness centrality of the nodes that corresponds to the importance of the nodes with respect to the ubiquitous foremost journeys in a temporal network.

Shortest (A+B)-path packing via hafnian
Published • View Publication • BIB
Björklund and Husfeldt developed a randomized polynomial time algorithm to solve the shortest two disjoint paths problem. Their algorithm is based on computation of permanents modulo 4 and the isolation lemma. In this paper, we consider the following generalization of the shortest two disjoint paths problem, and develop a similar algebraic algorithm. The shortest perfect $(A+B)$-path packing problem is: given an undirected graph $G$ and two disjoint node subsets $A,B$ with even cardinalities, find a shortest $|A|/2+|B|/2$ disjoint paths whose ends are both in $A$ or both in $B$. Besides its NP-hardness, we prove that this problem can be solved in randomized polynomial time if $|A|+|B|$ is fixed. Our algorithm basically follows the framework of Björklund and Husfeldt but uses a new technique: computation of hafnian modulo $2^k$ combined with Gallai's reduction from $T$-paths to matchings. We also generalize our technique for solving other path packing problems, and discuss its limitation.
Type $D_n^{(1)}$ rigged configuration bijection
Published in J Algebr Comb, Volume 46, Issue 2, pp 341-401 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
We establish a bijection between the set of rigged configurations and the set of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals of type $D^{(1)}_n$ in full generality. We prove the invariance of rigged configurations under the action of the combinatorial $R$-matrix on tensor products and show that the bijection preserves certain statistics (cocharge and energy). As a result, we establish the fermionic formula for type $D_n^{(1)}$. In addition, we establish that the bijection is a classical crystal isomorphism.

Representation stability for the cohomology of arrangements associated to root systems
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 48 (2018), 51-75 • View Publication • BIB
From a root system, one may consider the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes, as well as its toric and elliptic analogues. The corresponding Weyl group acts on the complement of the arrangement and hence on its cohomology. We consider a sequence of linear, toric, or elliptic arrangements which arise from a family of root systems of type A, B, C, or D, and we show that the rational cohomology stabilizes as a sequence of Weyl group representations. Our techniques combine a Leray spectral sequence argument similar to that of Church in the type A case along with FI$_W$-module theory which Wilson developed and used in the linear case. A key to the proof relies on a combinatorial description, using labelled partitions, of the poset of connected components of intersections of subvarieties in the arrangement.

Binary search trees and rectangulations
We revisit the classical problem of searching in a binary search tree (BST) using rotations, and present novel connections of this problem to a number of geometric and combinatorial structures. In particular, we show that the execution trace of a BST that serves a sequence of queries is in close correspondence with the flip-sequence between two rectangulations. (Rectangulations are well-studied combinatorial objects also known as mosaic floorplans.) We also reinterpret Small Manhattan Network, a problem with known connections to the BST problem, in terms of flips in rectangulations. We apply further transformations to the obtained geometric model, to arrive at a particularly simple view of the BST problem that resembles sequences of edge-relaxations in a shortest path algorithm. Our connections yield new results and observations for all structures concerned. In this draft we present some preliminary findings. BSTs with rotations are among the most fundamental and most thoroughly studied objects in computer science, nonetheless they pose long-standing open questions, such as the dynamic optimality conjecture of Sleator and Tarjan (STOC 1983). Our hope is that the correspondences presented in this paper provide a new perspective on this old problem and bring new tools to the study of dynamic optimality.

Rainbow Arithmetic Progressions in Finite Abelian Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For positive integers $n$ and $k$, the \emph{anti-van der Waerden number} of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, denoted by $aw(\mathbb{Z}_n,k)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to color the elements of the cyclic group of order $n$ and guarantee there is a rainbow arithmetic progression of length $k$. Butler et al. showed a reduction formula for $aw(\mathbb{Z}_{n},3) = 3$ in terms of the prime divisors of $n$. In this paper, we analagously define the anti-van der Waerden number of a finite abelian group $G$ and show $aw(G,3)$ is determined by the order of $G$ and the number of groups with even order in a direct sum isomorphic to $G$. The \emph{unitary anti-van der Waerden number} of a group is also defined and determined.

Upper bounds on the size of covering arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
Covering arrays find important application in software and hardware interaction testing. For practical applications it is useful to determine or bound the minimum number of rows, CAN$(t,k,v)$, in a covering array for given values of the parameters $t,k$ and $v$. Asymptotic upper bounds for CAN$(t,k,v)$ have earlier been established using the Stein-Lovász-Johnson strategy and the Lovász local lemma. A series of improvements on these bounds is developed in this paper. First an estimate for the discrete Stein-Lovász-Johnson bound is derived. Then using alteration, the Stein-Lovász-Johnson bound is improved upon, leading to a two-stage construction algorithm. Bounds from the Lovász local lemma are improved upon in a different manner, by examining group actions on the set of symbols. Two asymptotic upper bounds on CAN$(t,k,v)$ are established that are tighter than the known bounds. A two-stage bound is derived that employs the Lovász local lemma and the conditional Lovász local lemma distribution.
