A lattice point counting generalisation of the Tutte polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial for matroids is not directly applicable to polymatroids. For instance, deletion-contraction properties do not hold. We construct a polynomial for polymatroids which behaves similarly to the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, and in fact contains the same information as the Tutte polynomial when we restrict to matroids. This polynomial is constructed using lattice point counts in the Minkowski sum of the base polytope of a polymatroid and scaled copies of the standard simplex. We also show that, in the matroid case, our polynomial has coefficients of alternating sign, with a combinatorial interpretation closely tied to the Dawson partition.

Symbolic powers of cover ideal of very well-covered and bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph such that $J(G)$ has linear resolution, then $J(G)^{(k)}$ has linear resolution, for every integer $k\geq 1$. We also prove that for a every very well-covered graph $G$, the depth of symbolic powers of $J(G)$ forms a non-increasing sequence. Finally, we determine a linear upper bound for the regularity of powers of cover ideal of bipartite graph.

Depth, Stanley depth and regularity of ideals associated to graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. Assume that $I=I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$ and $J=J(G)$ is its cover ideal. We prove that ${\rm sdepth}(J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J)\geq n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, where $ν_{o}(G)$ is the ordered matching number of $G$. We also prove the inequalities ${\rm sdepth}(J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(J^k)$ and ${\rm sdepth}(S/J^k)\geq {\rm depth}(S/J^k)$, for every integer $k\gg 0$, when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Moreover, we provide an elementary proof for the known inequality ${\rm reg}(S/I)\leq ν_{o}(G)$.

Upper bounds for $B_h[g]$-sets with small $h$
For $g \geq 2$ and $h \geq 3$, we give small improvements on the maximum size of a $B_h[g]$-set contained in the interval $\{1,2, \dots , N \}$. In particular, we show that a $B_3[g]$-set in $\{1,2, \dots , N \}$ has at most $(14.3 g N)^{1/3}$ elements. The previously best known bound was $(16 gN)^{1/3}$ proved by Cilleruelo, Ruzsa, and Trujillo. We also introduce a related optimization problem that may be of independent interest.

Doron Gepner's Statistics on Words in {1,2,3} is (most probably) Asymptotically Logistic
Doron Gepner's word statistics, that came up in his research in conformal field theory, is studied and it is conjectured that its scaled limiting distribution is the Logistic distribution. We support this by proving rigorously that the scaled limits of the first twelve moments do indeed converge to those of the Logistic distribution. This is surprising, since Gepner's statistics is a natural analog of the classical statistics called the number of inversion, that is known to be asymptotically normal.

New extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 64 and 66 from bicubic planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work, connected cubic planar bipartite graphs and related binary self-dual codes are studied. Binary self-dual codes of length 16 are obtained by face-vertex incidence matrices of these graphs. By considering their lifts to the ring R_2 new extremal binary self-dual codes of lengths 64 are constructed as Gray images. More precisely, we construct 15 new codes of length 64. Moreover, 10 new codes of length 66 were obtained by applying a building-up construction to the binary codes. Codes with these weight enumerators are constructed for the first time in the literature. The results are tabulated.

Minimal obstructions for tree-depth: A non-1-unique example
A k-ranking of a graph G is a labeling of the vertices of G with values from 1,...,k such that any path joining two vertices with the same label contains a vertex having a higher label. The tree-depth of G is the smallest value of k for which a k-ranking of G exists. The graph G is k-critical if it has tree-depth k and every proper minor of G has smaller tree-depth. As defined in [M. D. Barrus, J. Sinkovic, Uniqueness and minimal obstructions for tree-depth, Discrete Math 339 (2) (2015) 606-613], a graph G is 1-unique if for every vertex v in G, there exists an optimal ranking of G in which v is the unique vertex with label 1. In the above paper and [M. D. Barrus, J. Sinkovic, Classes of critical graphs for tree-depth, arXiv:1502.0577] the authors showed that several classes of critical graphs are 1-unique and asked whether all critical graphs have this property. We answer in the negative by demonstrating an infinite family of graphs which are critical but not 1-unique.

A bijective proof of the Cauchy identity for Grothendieck polynomials
We consider pairs of a set-valued column-strict tableau and a reverse plane partition of the same shape. We introduce algortithms for them, which implies a bijective proof for the finite sum Cauchy identity for Grothendieck polynomials and dual Grothendieck polynomials.
Decomposing graphs into a constant number of locally irregular subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is locally irregular if no two adjacent vertices have the same degree. The irregular chromatic index $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of locally irregular subgraphs needed to edge-decompose $G$. Not all graphs have such a decomposition, but Baudon, Bensmail, Przybyło, and Woźniak conjectured that if $G$ can be decomposed into locally irregular subgraphs, then $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$. In support of this conjecture, Przybyło showed that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 3$ holds whenever $G$ has minimum degree at least $10^{10}$. Here we prove that every bipartite graph $G$ which is not an odd length path satisfies $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 10$. This is the first general constant upper bound on the irregular chromatic index of bipartite graphs. Combining this result with Przybyło's result, we show that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G) \leq 328$ for every graph $G$ which admits a decomposition into locally irregular subgraphs. Finally, we show that $χ_{\rm irr}'(G)\leq 2$ for every $16$-edge-connected bipartite graph $G$.

We generalize the well-known "12" and "24" Theorems for reflexive polytopes of dimension 2 and 3 to any smooth reflexive polytope. Our methods apply to a wider category of objects, here called reflexive GKM graphs, that are associated with certain monotone symplectic manifolds which do not necessarily admit a toric action. As an application, we provide bounds on the Betti numbers for certain monotone Hamiltonian spaces which depend on the minimal Chern number of the manifold.

Dissection of a rectangle into rectangles with given side ratios
Published in Matematicheskoe Prosveschenie 3rd ser. 20 (2016), 200-214 • Search Publication
Given a collection of N rectangles such that the side ratio of each one is a quadratic irrationality, we find all rectangles which can be tiled by rectangles similar to one of the given ones. It means that each possible shape can be used several times or not used at all, so that the number of rectangles in the tiling is not necessarily equal to N.

On universal quadratic identities for minors of quantum matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a complete combinatorial characterization of homogeneous quadratic relations of "universal character" valid for minors of quantum matrices (more precisely, for minors in the quantized coordinate ring $O_q(M_{m,n}(K))$ of $m\times n$ matrices over a field $K$, where $q\in K^\ast$). This is obtained as a consequence of a study of quantized minors of matrices generated by paths in certain planar graphs, called SE-graphs, generalizing the ones associated with Cauchon diagrams. Our efficient method of verifying universal quadratic identities for minors of quantum matrices is illustrated with many appealing examples.

On Dirac's Conjecture
Let $G$ be a 2-connected graph, $l$ be the length of a longest path in $G$ and $c$ be the circumference - the length of a longest cycle in $G$. In 1952, Dirac proved that $c>\sqrt{2l}$ and conjectured that $c\ge 2\sqrt{l}$. In this paper we present more general sharp bounds in terms of $l$ and the length $m$ of a vine on a longest path in $G$ including Dirac's conjecture as a corollary: if $c=m+y+2$ (generally, $c\ge m+y+2$) for some integer $y\ge 0$, then $c\ge\sqrt{4l+(y+1)^2}$ if $m$ is odd; and $c\ge\sqrt{4l+(y+1)^2-1}$ if $m$ is even.

Some results on chromatic number as a function of triangle count
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 33(1), pp. 546-563 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
A variety of powerful extremal results have been shown for the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. Three noteworthy bounds are in terms of the number of vertices, edges, and maximum degree given by Poljak \& Tuza (1994), and Johansson. There have been comparatively fewer works extending these types of bounds to graphs with a small number of triangles. One noteworthy exception is a result of Alon et. al (1999) bounding the chromatic number for graphs with low degree and few triangles per vertex; this bound is nearly the same as for triangle-free graphs. This type of parametrization is much less rigid, and has appeared in dozens of combinatorial constructions. In this paper, we show a similar type of result for $χ(G)$ as a function of the number of vertices $n$, the number of edges $m$, as well as the triangle count (both local and global measures). Our results smoothly interpolate between the generic bounds true for all graphs and bounds for triangle-free graphs. Our results are tight for most of these cases; we show how an open problem regarding fractional chromatic number and degeneracy in triangle-free graphs can resolve the small remaining gap in our bounds.

Pentavalent symmetric graphs of order twice a prime power
Published • View Publication • BIB
A connected symmetric graph of prime valency is {\em basic} if its automorphism group contains no nontrivial normal subgroup having more than two orbits. Let $p$ be a prime and $n$ a positive integer. In this paper, we investigate properties of connected pentavalent symmetric graphs of order $2p^n$, and it is shown that a connected pentavalent symmetric graph of order $2p^n$ is basic if and only if it is either a graph of order $6$, $16$, $250$, or a graph of three infinite families of Cayley graphs on generalized dihedral groups -- one family has order $2p$ with $p=5$ or $5 \mid (p-1)$, one family has order $2p^2$ with $5 \mid (p\pm 1)$, and the other family has order $2p^4$. Furthermore, the automorphism groups of these basic graphs are computed. Similar works on cubic and tetravalent symmetric graphs of order $2p^n$ have been done. It is shown that basic graphs of connected pentavalent symmetric graphs of order $2p^n$ are symmetric elementary abelian covers of the dipole $\Dip_5$, and with covering techniques, uniqueness and automorphism groups of these basic graphs are determined. Moreover, symmetric $\mz_p^n$-covers of the dipole $\Dip_5$ are classified. As a byproduct, connected pentavalent symmetric graphs of order $2p^2$ are classified.

An improved algorithm for the vertex cover $P_3$ problem on graphs of bounded treewidth
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 4, Discrete Algorithms (November 4, 2019) dmtcs:1425 • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a positive integer $t\geq2$, the task in the vertex cover $P_t$ ($VCP_t$) problem is to find a minimum subset of vertices $F\subseteq V$ such that every path of order $t$ in $G$ contains at least one vertex from $F$. The $VCP_t$ problem is NP-complete for any integer $t\geq2$ and has many applications in real world. Recently, the authors presented a dynamic programming algorithm running in time $4^p\cdot n^{O(1)}$ for the $VCP_3$ problem on $n$-vertex graphs with treewidth $p$. In this paper, we propose an improvement of it and improved the time-complexity to $3^p\cdot n^{O(1)}$. The connected vertex cover $P_3$ ($CVCP_3$) problem is the connected variation of the $VCP_3$ problem where $G[F]$ is required to be connected. Using the Cut\&Count technique, we give a randomized algorithm with runtime $4^p\cdot n^{O(1)}$ for the $CVCP_3$ problem on $n$-vertex graphs with treewidth $p$.

Power Graph and Exchange Property for Resolving Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A formula for computing the metric dimension of a simple graph, having no singleton twin, is given. A sufficient condition for a simple graph to have the exchange property, for resolving sets, is found. Some families of power graphs of finite groups, having this exchange property, are identified. The metric dimension of the power graph of a dihedral group is also computed.
Characterising Bounded Expansion by Neighbourhood Complexity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that a graph class $\cal G$ has bounded expansion if and only if it has bounded $r$-neighbourhood complexity, i.e. for any vertex set $X$ of any subgraph $H$ of $G\in\cal G$, the number of subsets of $X$ which are exact $r$-neighbourhoods of vertices of $H$ on $X$ is linear to the size of $X$. This is established by bounding the $r$-neighbourhood complexity of a graph in terms of both its $r$-centred colouring number and its weak $r$-colouring number, which provide known characterisations to the property of bounded expansion.
