Simple t-designs: A recursive construction for arbitrary t
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to present a recursive construction of simple t-designs for arbitrary t. The construction is of purely combinatorial nature and it requires finding solutions for the indices of the ingredient designs that satisfy a certain set of equalities. We give a small number of examples to illustrate the construction, whereby we have found a large number of new t-designs, which were previously unknown. This indicates that the method is useful and powerful.
Shortest path embeddings of graphs on surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical theorem of Fáry states that every planar graph can be represented by an embedding in which every edge is represented by a straight line segment. We consider generalizations of Fáry's theorem to surfaces equipped with Riemannian metrics. In this setting, we require that every edge is drawn as a shortest path between its two endpoints and we call an embedding with this property a shortest path embedding. The main question addressed in this paper is whether given a closed surface S, there exists a Riemannian metric for which every topologically embeddable graph admits a shortest path embedding. This question is also motivated by various problems regarding crossing numbers on surfaces. We observe that the round metrics on the sphere and the projective plane have this property. We provide flat metrics on the torus and the Klein bottle which also have this property. Then we show that for the unit square flat metric on the Klein bottle there exists a graph without shortest path embeddings. We show, moreover, that for large g, there exist graphs G embeddable into the orientable surface of genus g, such that with large probability a random hyperbolic metric does not admit a shortest path embedding of G, where the probability measure is proportional to the Weil-Petersson volume on moduli space. Finally, we construct a hyperbolic metric on every orientable surface S of genus g, such that every graph embeddable into S can be embedded so that every edge is a concatenation of at most O(g) shortest paths.

Packing minor-closed families of graphs into complete graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 119 (2016), 245-265 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by a conjecture of Gyárfás, recently Böttcher, Hladký, Piguet, and Taraz showed that every collection $T_1,\dots,T_t$ of trees on $n$ vertices with $\sum_{i=1}^te(T_i)\leq \binom{n}{2}$ and with bounded maximum degree, can be packed into the complete graph on $(1+o(1))n$ vertices. We generalise this result where we relax the restriction of packing families of trees to families of graphs of any given non-trivial minor-closed class of graphs.

Counting distinct dimer hex tilings
The combinatorics of tilings of a hexagon of integer side-length $n$ by 120 degree - 60 degree diamonds of side-length 1 has a long history, both directly (as a problem of interest in thermodynamic models) and indirectly (through the equivalence to plane partitions). Formulae as products of factorials have been conjectured and, one by one, proven for the number of such tilings under each of the symmetries of the hexagon. However, when this note was written the entry for the number of distinct such tilings in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) consisted of little more than a table for $0 \le n \le 4$ and a brief discussion of those values. The aim of this note is to pull together the relevant facts.

The maximum weight stable set problem in $(P_6,\mbox{bull})$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a polynomial-time algorithm that finds a maximum weight stable set in a graph that does not contain as an induced subgraph an induced path on six vertices or a bull (the graph with vertices $a, b, c, d, e$ and edges $ab, bc, cd, be, ce$).
Long induced paths in graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 62 (2017), 1-14 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every 3-connected planar graph on $n$ vertices contains an induced path on $Ω(\log n)$ vertices, which is best possible and improves the best known lower bound by a multiplicative factor of $\log \log n$. We deduce that any planar graph (or more generally, any graph embeddable on a fixed surface) with a path on $n$ vertices, also contains an induced path on $Ω(\sqrt{\log n})$ vertices. We conjecture that for any $k$, there is a contant $c(k)$ such that any $k$-degenerate graph with a path on $n$ vertices also contains an induced path on $Ω((\log n)^{c(k)})$ vertices. We provide examples showing that this order of magnitude would be best possible (already for chordal graphs), and prove the conjecture in the case of interval graphs.

The Push the button algorithm for contragredient Lie superalgebras
The purpose of the present paper is to explain how the push the button algorithm can be successfully applied to the Vogan superdiagram associated to a contragredient Lie superalgebra, so to obtain the equivalent super version of the Borel-De Siebenthal Theorem.

Extension complexity of polytopes with few vertices or facets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the extension complexity of polytopes with few vertices or facets. On the one hand, we provide a complete classification of $d$-polytopes with at most $d+4$ vertices according to their extension complexity: Out of the super-exponentially many $d$-polytopes with $d+4$ vertices, all have extension complexity $d+4$ except for some families of size $θ(d^2)$. On the other hand, we show that generic realizations of simplicial/simple $d$-polytopes with $d+1+α$ vertices/facets have extension complexity at least $2 \sqrt{d(d+α)} -d + 1$, which shows that for all $d>(\frac{α-1}{2})^2$ there are $d$-polytopes with $d+1+α$ vertices or facets and extension complexity $d+1+α$.
Periodicity in Rectangular Arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss several two-dimensional generalizations of the familiar Lyndon-Schutzenberger periodicity theorem for words. We consider the notion of primitive array (as one that cannot be expressed as the repetition of smaller arrays). We count the number of m x n arrays that are primitive. Finally, we show that one can test primitivity and compute the primitive root of an array in linear time.

Revisiting a Nice Cycle Lemma and its Consequences
We correct some errors and omissions primarily in a paper [Albertson&Hutchinson2004], discovered by R.B. Richter, and also some in a proof of [Thomassen1993] and of [Yu1997]. We give a short proof of Thomassen's theorem that every triangulation of a surface with all noncontractible cycles sufficiently long can be 5-colored; part of the shortness is due to the use of the Four Color Theorem, which is not used in Thomassen's original proof.

Comparing Graphs of Different Sizes
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 26, no. 5 (2017), 681--696 • View Publication • BIB
We consider two notions describing how one finite graph may be larger than another. Using them, we prove several theorems for such pairs that compare the number of spanning trees, the return probabilities of random walks, and the number of independent sets, among other combinatorial quantities. Our methods involve inequalities for determinants, for traces of functions of operators, and for entropy.

Ordering connected graphs by their Kirchhoff indices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kirchhoff index $Kf(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices, which was introduced by Klein and Randić. In this paper we characterized all extremal graphs with Kirchhoff index among all graphs obtained by deleting $p$ edges from a complete graph $K_n$ with $p\leq\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$ and obtained a sharp upper bound on the Kirchhoff index of these graphs. In addition, all the graphs with the first to ninth maximal Kirchhoff indices are completely determined among all connected graphs of order $n>27$.

Spaces of completions of elementary theories and convergence laws for random hypergraphs
Consider the binomial model $G^{d+1}(n,p)$ of the random $(d+1)$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, where each edge is present, independently of one another, with probability $p:\mathbb{N}\to[0,1]$. We prove that, for all logarithmo-exponential $p\ll n^{-d+ε}$, the probabilities of all elementary properties of hypergraphs converge, with particular emphasis in the ranges $p(n)\sim C/n^d$ and $p(n) \sim C\log(n)/n^d$. The exposition is unified by constructing, for each such function $p$, the topological space of all completions of its almost sure theory. This space turns out to be compact, metrizable and totally disconnected, but further properties depend on the range of $p$. The convergence of the probabilities of elementary properties is associated with a borelian probability measure on the space.

Basic enumeration of graph compositions with a restricted number of components
The concept of graph compositions is related to several number theoretic concepts, including partitions of positive integers and the cardinality of the power set of finite sets. This paper examines graph compositions where the total number of components is restricted and illustrates a connection between graph compositions and Stirling numbers of the second kind.

Localizations of inductively factored arrangements
We show that the class of inductively factored arrangements is closed under taking localizations. We illustrate the usefulness of this with an application.
The Register Function and Reductions of Binary Trees and Lattice Paths
The register function (or Horton-Strahler number) of a binary tree is a well-known combinatorial parameter. We study a reduction procedure for binary trees which offers a new interpretation for the register function as the maximal number of reductions that can be applied to a given tree. In particular, the precise asymptotic behavior of the number of certain substructures ("branches") that occur when reducing a tree repeatedly is determined. In the same manner we introduce a reduction for simple two-dimensional lattice paths from which a complexity measure similar to the register function can be derived. We analyze this quantity, as well as the (cumulative) size of an (iteratively) reduced lattice path asymptotically.

Interlacing families and the Hermitian spectral norm of digraphs
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 564 (2019), pp. 201-208 • View Publication • BIB
It is proved that for any finite connected graph $G$, there exists an orientation of $G$ such that the spectral radius of the corresponding Hermitian adjacency matrix is smaller or equal to the spectral radius of the universal cover of $G$ (with equality if and only if $G$ is a tree). This resolves a problem proposed by Mohar. The proof uses the method of interlacing families of polynomials that was developed by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava in their seminal work on the existence of infinite families of Ramanujan graphs.

In this paper, we study Segre classes in algebraic cobordism. We also prove a generalization of Kempf-Laksov formula for the degeneracy loci classes in the algebraic cobordism of the Grassmannian bundle.
