Elementary observations on Rogers-Szegö polynomials
The Rogers-Szegö polynomials are natural q-analogues of Newton binomials. In general they have no closed expression. We consider some exceptional cases which are products of a factor with a closed formula and another one with nice values for q=1 and q=-1. These are related to normalized Rogers-Szegö polynomials which have nice expansions and Hankel determinants. The Exposition of the paper is elementary and almost self-contained.

In this paper, we prove a generalization of Kempf-Laksov formula for the degeneracy loci classes in even infinitesimal cohomology theories of the Grassmannian bundle and the Lagrangian Grassmannian bundle.

Essential dimension and the flats spanned by a point set
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ be a finite set of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{C}^d$. We answer a question of Purdy on the conditions under which the number of hyperplanes spanned by $P$ is at least the number of $(d-2)$-flats spanned by $P$. In answering this question, we define a new measure of the degeneracy of a point set with respect to affine subspaces, termed the "essential dimension". We use the essential dimension to give an asymptotic expression for the number of $k$-flats spanned by $P$, for $1 \leq k \leq d-1$.

Perfect snake-in-the-box codes for rank modulation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For odd n, the alternating group on n elements is generated by the permutations that jump an element from any odd position to position 1. We prove Hamiltonicity of the associated directed Cayley graph for all odd n not equal to 5. (A result of Rankin implies that the graph is not Hamiltonian for n=5.) This solves a problem arising in rank modulation schemes for flash memory. Our result disproves a conjecture of Horovitz and Etzion, and proves another conjecture of Yehezkeally and Schwartz.

A q-Analog of Foulke's conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose a $q$-analog of classical plethystic conjectures due to Foulkes. In our conjectures, a divided difference of plethysms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials $H_n(\mathbf{x};q)$ replaces the analogous difference of plethysms of complete homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n(\mathbf{x})$ in Foulkes conjecture. At $q=0$, we get back the original statement of Foulkes, and we show that our version holds at $q=1$. We discuss further supporting evidence, as well as various generalizations.

On forbidden induced subgraphs for unit disk graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A unit disk graph is the intersection graph of disks of equal radii in the plane. The class of unit disk graphs is hereditary, and therefore admits a characterization in terms of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In spite of quite active study of unit disk graphs very little is known about minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for this class. We found only finitely many minimal non unit disk graphs in the literature. In this paper we study in a systematic way forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of unit disk graphs. We develop several structural and geometrical tools, and use them to reveal infinitely many new minimal non unit disk graphs. Further we use these results to investigate structure of co-bipartite unit disk graphs. In particular, we give structural characterization of those co-bipartite unit disk graphs whose edges between parts form a C4-free bipartite graph, and show that bipartite complements of these graphs are also unit disk graphs. Our results lead us to propose a conjecture that the class of co-bipartite unit disk graphs is closed under bipartite complementation.

Recursive cubes of rings as models for interconnection networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study recursive cubes of rings as models for interconnection networks. We first redefine each of them as a Cayley graph on the semidirect product of an elementary abelian group by a cyclic group in order to facilitate the study of them by using algebraic tools. We give an algorithm for computing shortest paths and the distance between any two vertices in recursive cubes of rings, and obtain the exact value of their diameters. We obtain sharp bounds on the Wiener index, vertex-forwarding index, edge-forwarding index and bisection width of recursive cubes of rings. The cube-connected cycles and cube-of-rings are special recursive cubes of rings, and hence all results obtained in the paper apply to these well-known networks.

3-regular colored graphs and classification of surfaces
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 58 (2) (2017), 345 -- 354 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the theory of crystallizations, we consider an equivalence relation on the class of $3$-regular colored graphs and prove that up to this equivalence (a) there exists a unique contracted 3-regular colored graph if the number of vertices is $4m$ and (b) there are exactly two such graphs if the number of vertices is $4m+2$ for each $m\geq 1$. Using this, we present a simple proof of the classification of closed surfaces.

On symmetries in phylogenetic trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Billey et al. [arXiv:1507.04976] have recently discovered a surprisingly simple formula for the number $a_n(σ)$ of leaf-labelled rooted non-embedded binary trees (also known as phylogenetic trees) with $n\geq 1$ leaves, fixed (for the relabelling action) by a given permutation $σ\in\frak{S}_n$. Denoting by $λ\vdash n$ the integer partition giving the sizes of the cycles of $σ$ in non-increasing order, they show by a guessing/checking approach that if $λ$ is a binary partition (it is known that $a_n(σ)=0$ otherwise), then $$ a_n(σ)=\prod_{i=2}^{\ell(λ)}(2(λ_i+\cdots+λ_{\ell(λ)})-1), $$ and they derive from it a formula and random generation procedure for tanglegrams (and more generally for tangled chains). Our main result is a combinatorial proof of the formula, which yields a simplification of the random sampler for tangled chains.

Some results on the statistics of hull perimeters in large planar triangulations and quadrangulations
Published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical, Volume 49, Number 44, 445203 (2016) • View Publication • BIB
The hull perimeter at distance d in a planar map with two marked vertices at distance k from each other is the length of the closed curve separating these two vertices and lying at distance d from the first one (d<k). We study the statistics of hull perimeters in large random planar triangulations and quadrangulations as a function of both k and d. Explicit expressions for the probability density of the hull perimeter at distance d, as well as for the joint probability density of hull perimeters at distances d1 and d2, are obtained in the limit of infinitely large k. We also consider the situation where the distance d at which the hull perimeter is measured corresponds to a finite fraction of k. The various laws that we obtain are identical for triangulations and for quadrangulations, up to a global rescaling. Our approach is based on recursion relations recently introduced by the author which determine the generating functions of so-called slices, i.e. pieces of maps with appropriate distance constraints. It is indeed shown that the map decompositions underlying these recursion relations are intimately linked to the notion of hull perimeters and provide a simple way to fully control them.

On Isomorphisms of Vertex-transitive Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The isomorphism problem of Cayley graphs has been well studied in the literature, such as characterizations of CI (DCI)-graphs and CI (DCI)-groups. In this paper, we generalize these to vertex-transitive graphs and establish parallel results. Some interesting vertex-transitive graphs are given, including a first example of connected symmetric non-Cayley non-GI-graph. Also, we initiate the study for GI and DGI-groups, defined analogously to the concept of CI and DCI-groups.
Enumeration and Maximum Number of Minimal Connected Vertex Covers in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Connected Vertex Cover is one of the classical problems of computer science, already mentioned in the monograph of Garey and Johnson. Although the optimization and decision variants of finding connected vertex covers of minimum size or weight are well studied, surprisingly there is no work on the enumeration or maximum number of minimal connected vertex covers of a graph. In this paper we show that the maximum number of minimal connected vertex covers of a graph is at most 1.8668^n, and these can be enumerated in time O(1.8668^n). For graphs of chordality at most 5, we are able to give a better upper bound, and for chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs we are able to give tight bounds on the maximum number of minimal connected vertex covers.
The local metric dimension of the lexicographic product of graphs
The metric dimension is quite a well-studied graph parameter. Recently, the adjacency dimension and the local metric dimension have been introduced and studied. In this paper, we give a general formula for the local metric dimension of the lexicographic product $G \circ \mathcal{H}$ of a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ and a family $\mathcal{H}$ composed by $n$ graphs. We show that the local metric dimension of $G \circ \mathcal{H}$ can be expressed in terms of the true twin equivalence classes of $G$ and the local adjacency dimension of the graphs in $\mathcal{H}$.

The Kelmans-Seymour conjecture II: 2-vertices in $K_4^-$
We use $K_4^-$ to denote the graph obtained from $K_4$ by removing an edge, and use $TK_5$ to denote a subdivision of $K_5$. Let $G$ be a 5-connected nonplanar graph and $\{x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2\}\subseteq V(G)$ such that $G[\{x_1,x_2,$ $y_1,y_2\}]\cong K_4^-$ with $y_1y_2\notin E(G)$. Let $w_1,w_2,w_3\in N(y_2)-\{x_1,x_2\}$ be distinct. We show that $G$ contains a $TK_5$ in which $y_2$ is not a branch vertex, or $G-y_2$ contains $K_4^-$, or $G$ has a special 5-separation, or $G-\{y_2v:v\notin \{w_1,w_2,w_3,x_1,x_2\}\}$ contains $TK_5$.

A new S-type eigenvalue localization set for tensors and its applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new \emph{S}-type eigenvalue localization set for tensors is derived by breaking $N=\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ into disjoint subsets $S$ and its complement. It is proved that this new set is tighter than those presented by Qi (Journal of Symbolic Computation 40 (2005) 1302-1324), Li et al. (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 21 (2014) 39-50) and Li et al. (Linear Algebra Appl. 493 (2016) 469-483). As applications, checkable sufficient conditions for the positive definiteness and the positive semi-definiteness of tensors are proposed. Moreover, based on this new set, we establish a new upper bound for the spectral radius of nonnegative tensors and a lower bound for the minimum \emph{H}-eigenvalue of weakly irreducible strong \emph{M}-tensors in this paper. We demonstrate that these bounds are sharper than those obtained by Li et al. (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 21 (2014) 39-50) and He and Huang (J. Inequal. Appl. 114 (2014) 2014). Numerical examples are also given to illustrate this fact.

Multicolour Ramsey Numbers of Odd Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any positive integer $r$ there exists an integer $k$ and a $k$-colouring of the edges of $K_{2^{k}+1}$ with no monochromatic odd cycle of length less than $r$. This makes progress on a problem of Erdős and Graham and answers a question of Chung. We use these colourings to give new lower bounds on the $k$-colour Ramsey number of the odd cycle and prove that, for all odd $r$ and all $k$ sufficiently large, there exists a constant $ε= ε(r) > 0$ such that $R_{k}(C_{r}) > (r-1)(2+ε)^{k-1}$.

Permutation groups and derangements of odd prime order
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.

Bounds for spherical codes
A set $C$ of unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called an $L$-spherical code if $x \cdot y \in L$ for any distinct $x,y$ in $C$. Spherical codes have been extensively studied since their introduction in the 1970's by Delsarte, Goethals and Seidel. In this note we prove a conjecture of Bukh on the maximum size of spherical codes. In particular, we show that for any set of $k$ fixed angles, one can choose at most $O(d^k)$ lines in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that any pair of them forms one of these angles.
