On the use of the least common multiple to build a prime-generating recurrence

We study a recursively defined sequence which is constructed using the least common multiple. It has been conjectured that every term of that sequence is $1$ or a prime. In this paper we show that this claim is connected to a strong version of Linnik's Theorem, which is yet unproved. We also study a generalization on which composite numbers may appear depending on the initial term.

We prove that, if $m,n\geqslant 1$ and $a_1,\ldots,a_m$ are nonnegative integers, then \begin{align*} \frac{[a_1+\cdots+a_m+1]!}{[a_1]!\ldots[a_m]!}\sum^{n-1}_{h=0}q^h\prod_{i=1}^m{h\brack a_i} \equiv 0\pmod{[n]}, \end{align*} where $[n]=\frac{1-q^n}{1-q}$, $[n]!=[n][n-1]\cdots[1]$, and ${a\brack b}=\prod_{k=1}^b\frac{1-q^{a-k+1}}{1-q^k}$. The $a_1=\cdots=a_m$ case confirms a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. We also show that, if $p>\max\{a,b\}$ is a prime, then \begin{align*} \frac{[a+b+1]!}{[a]![b]!}\sum_{h=0}^{p-1}q^h{h\brack a}{h\brack b} \equiv (-1)^{a-b} q^{ab-{a\choose 2}-{b\choose 2}}[p]\pmod{[p]^2}. \end{align*}
New Bounds for Permutation Codes in Ulam Metric

New bounds on the cardinality of permutation codes equipped with the Ulam distance are presented. First, an integer-programming upper bound is derived, which improves on the Singleton-type upper bound in the literature for some lengths. Second, several probabilistic lower bounds are developed, which improve on the known lower bounds for large minimum distances. The results of a computer search for permutation codes are also presented.

We introduce a perfect discrete Morse function on the moduli space of a polygonal linkage. The ingredients of the construction are: (1) the cell structure on the moduli space, and (2) the discrete Morse theory approach, which allows to reduce the number of cells to the minimal possible.

A conjugacy class $C$ of a finite group $G$ is a sign conjugacy class if every irreducible character of $G$ takes value 0, 1 or -1 on $C$. In this paper we classify the sign conjugacy classes of alternating groups.
Dimers on Rail Yard Graphs

We introduce a general model of dimer coverings of certain plane bipartite graphs, which we call rail yard graphs (RYG). The transfer matrices used to compute the partition function are shown to be isomorphic to certain operators arising in the so-called boson-fermion correspondence. This allows to reformulate the RYG dimer model as a Schur process, i.e. as a random sequence of integer partitions subject to some interlacing conditions.
Beyond the computation of the partition function, we provide an explicit expression for all correlation functions or, equivalently, for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix of the RYG dimer model. This expression, which is amenable to asymptotic analysis, follows from an exact combinatorial description of the operators localizing dimers in the transfer-matrix formalism, and then a suitable application of Wick's theorem.
Plane partitions, domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, pyramid partitions, and steep tilings arise as particular cases of the RYG dimer model. For the Aztec diamond, we provide new derivations of the edge-probability generating function, of the biased creation rate, of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and of the arctic circle theorem.

The construction of hypergeometric $2D$ Toda $τ$-functions as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers is extended to multispecies families. Both the enumerative geometrical significance of multispecies weighted Hurwitz numbers, as weighted enumerations of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere, and their combinatorial significance in terms of weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ are derived. The particular case of multispecies quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers is studied in detail.
Lattice structure of Grid-Tamari orders

The Tamari order is a central object in algebraic combinatorics and many other areas. Defined as the transitive closure of an associativity law, the Tamari order possesses a surprisingly rich structure: it is a congruence-uniform lattice. We consider a larger class of posets, the Grid-Tamari orders, which arise as an ordering on the facets of the non-kissing complex introduced by Pylyavskyy, Petersen, and Speyer. In addition to Tamari orders, some interesting examples of Grid-Tamari orders include the Type A Cambrian lattices and Grassmann-Tamari orders. We prove that the Grid-Tamari orders are congruence-uniform lattices, which resolves a conjecture of Santos, Stump, and Welker. Towards this goal, we define a closure operator on sets of paths in a square grid, and prove that the biclosed sets of paths, ordered by inclusion, form a congruence-uniform lattice. We then prove that the Grid-Tamari order is a quotient lattice of the corresponding lattice of biclosed sets.
The maximum-likelihood decoding threshold for graphic codes

For a class $\mathcal{C}$ of binary linear codes, we write $θ_{\mathcal{C}}\colon (0,1) \to [0,\frac{1}{2}]$ for the maximum-likelihood decoding threshold function of $\mathcal{C}$, the function whose value at $R \in (0,1)$ is the largest bit-error rate $p$ that codes in $\mathcal{C}$ can tolerate with a negligible probability of maximum-likelihood decoding error across a binary symmetric channel. We show that, if $\mathcal{C}$ is the class of cycle codes of graphs, then $θ_{\mathcal{C}}(R) \le \frac{(1-\sqrt{R})^2}{2(1+R)}$ for each $R$, and show that equality holds only when $R$ is asymptotically achieved by cycle codes of regular graphs.

The Simultaneous Strong Metric Dimension of Graph Families

Let ${\cal G}$ be a family of graphs defined on a common (labeled) vertex set $V$. A set $S\subset V$ is said to be a simultaneous strong metric generator for ${\cal G}$ if it is a strong metric generator for every graph of the family. The minimum cardinality among all simultaneous strong metric generators for ${\cal G}$, denoted by $Sd_s({\cal G})$, is called the simultaneous strong metric dimension of ${\cal G}$. We obtain general results on $Sd_s({\cal G})$ for arbitrary families of graphs, with special emphasis on the case of families composed by a graph and its complement. In particular, it is shown that the problem of finding the simultaneous strong metric dimension of families of graphs is $NP$-hard, even when restricted to families of trees.
Strongly sublinear separators and polynomial expansion
A result of Plotkin, Rao, and Smith implies that graphs with polynomial expansion have strongly sublinear separators. We prove a converse of this result showing that hereditary classes of graphs with strongly sublinear separators have polynomial expansion. This confirms a conjecture of the first author.
Equitable total coloring of corona of cubic graphs
The minimum number of total independent partition sets of $V \cup E$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called the \emph{total chromatic number} of $G$, denoted by $χ''(G)$. If the difference between cardinalities of any two total independent sets is at most one, then the minimum number of total independent partition sets of $V \cup E$ is called the \emph{equitable total chromatic number}, and is denoted by $χ''_=(G)$.
In this paper we consider equitable total coloring of coronas of cubic graphs, $G \circ H$. It turns out that, independly on the values of equitable total chromatic number of factors $G$ and $H$, equitable total chromatic number of corona $G \circ H$ is equal to $Δ(G \circ H) +1$. Thereby, we confirm Total Coloring Conjecture (TCC), posed by Behzad in 1964, and Equitable Total Coloring Conjecture (ETCC), posed by Wang in 2002, for coronas of cubic graphs. As a direct consequence we get that all coronas of cubic graphs are of Type 1.
On the representation theory of $G\sim S_n$

In the Vershik-Okounkov approach to the complex irreducible representations of $S_n$ and $G\sim S_n$ we parametrize the irreducible representations and their bases by spectral objects rather than combinatorial objects and then, at the end, give a bijection between the spectral and combinatorial objects. The fundamental ideas are similar in both cases but there are additional technicalities involved in the $G\sim S_n$ case. This was carried out by Pushkarev.
The present work gives a fully detailed exposition of Pushkarev's theory. For the most part we follow the original but our definition of a Gelfand-Tsetlin subspace, based on a multiplicity free chain of subgroups, is slightly different and leads to a more natural development of the theory. We also work out in detail an example, the generalized Johnson scheme, from this viewpoint.

We classify non-complete prime valency graphs satisfying the property that their automorphism group is transitive on both the set of arcs and the set of $2$-geodesics. We prove that either $Γ$ is 2-arc transitive or the valency $p$ satisfies $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$, and for each such prime there is a unique graph with this property: it is a non-bipartite antipodal double cover of the complete graph $K_{p+1}$ with automorphism group $PSL(2,p)\times Z_2$ and diameter 3.
Density dichotomy in random words

Word $W$ is said to encounter word $V$ provided there is a homomorphism $φ$ mapping letters to nonempty words so that $φ(V)$ is a substring of $W$. For example, taking $φ$ such that $φ(h)=c$ and $φ(u)=ien$, we see that "science" encounters "huh" since $cienc=φ(huh)$. The density of $V$ in $W$, $δ(V,W)$, is the proportion of substrings of $W$ that are homomorphic images of $V$. So the density of "huh" in "science" is $2/{8 \choose 2}$. A word is doubled if every letter that appears in the word appears at least twice.
The dichotomy: Let $V$ be a word over any alphabet, $Σ$ a finite alphabet with at least 2 letters, and $W_n \in Σ^n$ chosen uniformly at random. Word $V$ is doubled if and only if $\mathbb{E}(δ(V,W_n)) \rightarrow 0$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$.
We further explore convergence for nondoubled words and concentration of the limit distribution for doubled words around its mean.

The goal of the paper is to apply the general operator theoretic construction known as the Schur complement for computation of the spectrum of certain infinite graphs which can be viewed as finite graphs with the ray attached to them. The examples of a multiple star and a flower with infinite rays are considered.
On tripling constant of multiplicative subgroups
We prove that any multiplicative subgroup G of the prime field f_p with |G| < p^{1/2} satisfies |3G| \gg |G|^2 / \log |G|. Also, we obtain a bound for the multiplicative energy of any nonzero shift of G, namely E^* (G+x) \ll |G|^2 log |G|, where x is an arbitrary nonzero residue.
Operads from posets and Koszul duality

We introduce a functor ${\sf As}$ from the category of posets to the category of nonsymmetric binary and quadratic operads, establishing a new connection between these two categories. Each operad obtained by the construction ${\sf As}$ provides a generalization of the associative operad because all of its generating operations are associative. This construction has a very singular property: the operads obtained from ${\sf As}$ are almost never basic. Besides, the properties of the obtained operads, such as Koszulity, basicity, associative elements, realization, and dimensions, depend on combinatorial properties of the starting posets. Among others, we show that the property of being a forest for the Hasse diagram of the starting poset implies that the obtained operad is Koszul. Moreover, we show that the construction ${\sf As}$ restricted to a certain family of posets with Hasse diagrams satisfying some combinatorial properties is closed under Koszul duality.
On the readability of overlap digraphs

We introduce the graph parameter readability and study it as a function of the number of vertices in a graph. Given a digraph D, an injective overlap labeling assigns a unique string to each vertex such that there is an arc from x to y if and only if x properly overlaps y. The readability of D is the minimum string length for which an injective overlap labeling exists. In applications that utilize overlap digraphs (e.g., in bioinformatics), readability reflects the length of the strings from which the overlap digraph is constructed. We study the asymptotic behaviour of readability by casting it in purely graph theoretic terms (without any reference to strings). We prove upper and lower bounds on readability for certain graph families and general graphs
