On the existence of vertex-disjoint subgraphs with high degree sum
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, we denote by $σ_{2}(G)$ the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices if $G$ is non-complete; otherwise, $σ_{2}(G) = +\infty$. In this paper, we prove the following two results: (i) If $s_{1}, s_{2} \ge 2$ are integers and $G$ is a non-complete graph with $σ_{2}(G) \ge 2(s_{1} + s_{2} + 1) - 1$, then $G$ contains two vertex-disjoint subgraphs $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ such that each $H_{i}$ is a graph of order at least $s_{i}+1$ with $σ_{2}(H_{i}) \ge 2s_{i} - 1$. (ii) If $s_{1}, s_{2} \ge 2$ are integers and $G$ is a triangle-free graph of order at least $3$ with $σ_{2}(G) \ge 2(s_{1} + s_{2}) - 1$, then $G$ contains two vertex-disjoint subgraphs $H_{1}$ and $H_{2}$ such that each $H_{i}$ is a graph of order at least $2s_{i}$ with $σ_{2}(H_{i}) \ge 2s_{i} - 1$. By using this result, we also give some corollaries concerning degree conditions for the existence of $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles.
On Acyclic Edge-Coloring of Complete Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An acyclic edge-coloring of a graph is a proper edge-coloring without bichromatic ($2$-colored) cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted by $a'(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ admits an acyclic edge-coloring using $k$ colors. Let $Δ= Δ(G)$ denote the maximum degree of a vertex in a graph $G$. A complete bipartite graph with $n$ vertices on each side is denoted by $K_{n,n}$. Basavaraju, Chandran and Kummini proved that $a'(K_{n,n}) \ge n+2 = Δ+ 2$ when $n$ is odd. Basavaraju and Chandran provided an acyclic edge-coloring of $K_{p,p}$ using $p+2$ colors and thus establishing $a'(K_{p,p}) = p+2 = Δ+ 2$ when $p$ is an odd prime. The main tool in their approach is perfect $1$-factorization of $K_{p,p}$. Recently, following their approach, Venkateswarlu and Sarkar have shown that $K_{2p-1,2p-1}$ admits an acyclic edge-coloring using $2p+1$ colors which implies that $a'(K_{2p-1,2p-1}) = 2p+1 = Δ+ 2$, where $p$ is an odd prime. In this paper, we generalize this approach and present a general framework to possibly get an acyclic edge-coloring of $K_{n,n}$ which possess a perfect $1$-factorization using $n+2 = Δ+2$ colors. In this general framework, we show that $K_{p^2,p^2}$ admits an acyclic edge-coloring using $p^2+2$ colors and thus establishing $a'(K_{p^2,p^2}) = p^2+2 = Δ+ 2$ when $p\ge 5$ is an odd prime.

A note on perfect matchings in uniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the \emph{exact} minimum $\ell$-degree threshold for perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergraphs when the corresponding threshold for perfect fractional matchings is significantly less than $\frac{1}{2} \binom{n}{k- \ell}$. This extends our previous results that determine the minimum $\ell$-degree thresholds for perfect matchings in $k$-uniform hypergraphs for all $\ell\ge k/2$ and provides two new (exact) thresholds: $(k,\ell)=(5,2)$ and $(7,3)$.
Exchange of three intervals: itineraries, substitutions and palindromicity
Given a symmetric exchange of three intervals, we provide a detailed description of the return times to a subinterval and the corresponding itineraries. We apply our results to morphisms fixing words coding non-degenerate three interval exchange transformation. This allows us to prove that the conjecture stated by Hof, Knill and Simon is valid for such infinite words.

Jacobsthal numbers in generalised Petersen graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the number of $1$-factorisations of a generalised Petersen graph of the type $GP(3k,k)$ is equal to the $k$th Jacobsthal number $J(k)$ if $k$ is odd, and equal to $4J(k)$, when $k$ is even. Moreover, we verify the list colouring conjecture for $GP(3k,k)$.

Note on super congruences modulo $p^2$
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $m$ be an integer with $p\nmid m$. In this paper show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom ak\binom{-1-a}k}{m^k} \equiv 0\pmod p \quad\hbox{implies}\quad\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k\binom ak \binom{-1-a}k}{m^k}\equiv 0\pmod {p^2}.$$

Kempe Equivalence of Colourings of Cubic Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a proper vertex colouring of $G$, a Kempe chain is a subset of $V$ that induces a maximal connected subgraph of $G$ in which every vertex has one of two colours. To make a Kempe change is to obtain one colouring from another by exchanging the colours of vertices in a Kempe chain. Two colourings are Kempe equivalent if each can be obtained from the other by a series of Kempe changes. A conjecture of Mohar asserts that, for $k \geq 3$, all $k$-colourings of $k$-regular graphs that are not complete are Kempe equivalent. We address the case $k=3$ by showing that all $3$-colourings of a cubic graph $G$ are Kempe equivalent unless $G$ is the complete graph $K_4$ or the triangular prism.

A Density Turán Theorem

Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. For such a graph $F,$ a classical result of Simonovits from 1966 shows that every graph on $n\ge n_0(F)$ vertices with more than $\frac{χ(F)-2}{χ(F)-1}\cdot \frac{n^2}{2}$ edges contains a copy of $F$. In this paper we derive a similar theorem for multipartite graphs. For a graph $H$ and an integer $\ell \geq v(H)$, let $d_{\ell}(H)$ be the minimum real number such that every $\ell$-partite graph whose edge density between any two parts is greater than $d_{\ell}(H)$ contains a copy of $H$. Our main contribution is to show that $d_{\ell}(H)=\frac{χ(H)-2}{χ(H)-1}$ for $\ell \ge \ell_0(H)$ sufficiently large if and only if $H$ admits a vertex-colouring with $χ(H)-1$ colours such that all colour classes but one are independent sets, and the exceptional class induces just a matching. When $H$ is a clique, this recovers a result of Pfender [Complete subgraphs in multipartite graphs, Combinatorica 32 (2012), 483--495]. We also consider several extensions of Pfender's result.

We obtain explicit branching rules for graded cell modules and graded simple modules over the endomorphism algebra of a Bott-Samelson bimodule. These rules allow us to categorify a well-known recursive formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Asymptotic Delsarte cliques in distance-regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new bound on the parameter $λ$ (number of common neighbors of a pair of adjacent vertices) in a distance-regular graph $G$, improving and generalizing bounds for strongly regular graphs by Spielman (1996) and Pyber (2014). The new bound is one of the ingredients of recent progress on the complexity of testing isomorphism of strongly regular graphs (Babai, Chen, Sun, Teng, Wilmes 2013). The proof is based on a clique geometry found by Metsch (1991) under certain constraints on the parameters. We also give a simplified proof of the following asymptotic consequence of Metsch's result: if $kμ= o(λ^2)$ then each edge of $G$ belongs to a unique maximal clique of size asymptotically equal to $λ$, and all other cliques have size $o(λ)$. Here $k$ denotes the degree and $μ$ the number of common neighbors of a pair of vertices at distance 2. We point out that Metsch's cliques are "asymptotically Delsarte" when $kμ= o(λ^2)$, so families of distance-regular graphs with parameters satisfying $kμ= o(λ^2)$ are "asymptotically Delsarte-geometric."
Root geometry of polynomial sequences II: Type (1,0)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the sequence of polynomials $W_n(x)$ defined by the recursion $W_n(x)=(ax+b)W_{n-1}(x)+dW_{n-2}(x)$, with initial values $W_0(x)=1$ and $W_1(x)=t(x-r)$, where $a,b,d,t,r$ are real numbers, $a,t>0$, and $d<0$. We show that every polynomial $W_n(x)$ is distinct-real-rooted, and that the roots of the polynomial $W_n(x)$ interlace the roots of the polynomial $W_{n-1}(x)$. We find that, as $n\to\infty$, the sequence of smallest roots of the polynomials $W_n(x)$ converges decreasingly to a real number, and that the sequence of largest roots converges increasingly to a real number. Moreover, by using the Dirichlet approximation theorem, we prove that there is a number to which, for every positive integer $i\ge2$, the sequence of $i$th smallest roots of the polynomials $W_n(x)$ converges. Similarly, there is a number to which, for every positive integer $i\ge2$, the sequence of $i$th largest roots of the polynomials $W_n(x)$ converges. It turns out that these two convergence points are independent of the numbers $t$ and $r$, as well as $i$. We derive explicit expressions for these four limit points, and we determine completely when some of these limit points coincide.

On metric properties of maps between Hamming spaces and related graph homomorphisms
Published • View Publication • BIB
A mapping of $k$-bit strings into $n$-bit strings is called an $(α,β)$-map if $k$-bit strings which are more than $αk$ apart are mapped to $n$-bit strings that are more than $βn$ apart. This is a relaxation of the classical problem of constructing error-correcting codes, which corresponds to $α=0$. Existence of an $(α,β)$-map is equivalent to existence of a graph homomorphism $\bar H(k,αk)\to \bar H(n,βn)$, where $H(n,d)$ is a Hamming graph with vertex set $\{0,1\}^n$ and edges connecting vertices differing in $d$ or fewer entries. This paper proves impossibility results on achievable parameters $(α,β)$ in the regime of $n,k\to\infty$ with a fixed ratio ${n\over k}= ρ$. This is done by developing a general criterion for existence of graph-homomorphism based on the semi-definite relaxation of the independence number of a graph (known as the Schrijver's $θ$-function). The criterion is then evaluated using some known and some new results from coding theory concerning the $θ$-function of Hamming graphs. As an example, it is shown that if $β>1/2$ and $n\over k$ -- integer, the ${n\over k}$-fold repetition map achieving $α=β$ is asymptotically optimal. Finally, constraints on configurations of points and hyperplanes in projective spaces over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are derived.

Combinatorial theory of permutation-invariant random matrices I: partitions, geometry and renormalization
In this article, we define and study a geometry and an order on the set of partitions of an even number of objects. One of the definitions involves the partition algebra, a structure of algebra on the set of such partitions depending on an integer parameter N. Then we emulate the theory of random matrices in a combinatorial framework: for any parameter N, we introduce a family of linear forms on the partition algebras which allows us to define a notion of weak convergence similar to the convergence in moments in random matrices theory. A renormalization of the partition algebras allows us to consider the weak convergence as a simple convergence in a fixed space. This leads us to the definition of a deformed partition algebra for any integer parameter N and to the definition of two transforms: the cumulants transform and the exclusive moments transform. Using an improved triangular inequality for the distance defined on partitions, we prove that the deformed partition algebras, endowed with a deformation of the linear forms converge as N go to infinity. This result allows us to prove combinatorial properties about geodesics and a convergence theorem for semi-groups of functions on partitions. At the end we study a sub-algebra of functions on infinite partitions with finite support : a new addition operation and a notion of R-transform are defined. We introduce the set of multiplicative functions which becomes a Lie group for the new addition and multiplication operations. For each of them, the Lie algebra is studied. The appropriate tools are developed in order to understand the algebraic fluctuations of the moments and cumulants for converging sequences. This allows us to extend all the results we got for the zero order of fluctuations to any order.

Hankel determinants, Padé approximations, and irrationality exponents
Published • View Publication • BIB
The irrationality exponent of an irrational number $ξ$, which measures the approximation rate of $ξ$ by rationals, is in general extremely difficult to compute explicitly, unless we know the continued fraction expansion of $ξ$. Results obtained so far are rather fragmentary, and often treated case by case. In this work, we shall unify all the known results on the subject by showing that the irrationality exponents of large classes of automatic numbers and Mahler numbers (which are transcendental) are exactly equal to $2$. Our classes contain the Thue--Morse--Mahler numbers, the sum of the reciprocals of the Fermat numbers, the regular paperfolding numbers, which have been previously considered respectively by Bugeaud, Coons, and Guo, Wu and Wen, but also new classes such as the Stern numbers and so on. Among other ingredients, our proofs use results on Hankel determinants obtained recently by Han.

On the Approximability of Independent Set Problem on Power Law Graphs
We give the first nonconstant lower bounds for the approximability of the Independent Set Problem on the Power Law Graphs. These bounds are of the form $n^ε$ in the case when the power law exponent satisfies $β<1$. In the case when $β=1$, the lower bound is of the form $\log (n)^ε$. The embedding technique used in the proof could also be of independent interest.

A remark on the Tournament game
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 22(3) (2015), P3.42 • View Publication • BIB
We study the Maker-Breaker tournament game played on the edge set of a given graph $G$. Two players, Maker and Breaker claim unclaimed edges of $G$ in turns, and Maker wins if by the end of the game she claims all the edges of a pre-defined goal tournament. Given a tournament $T_k$ on $k$ vertices, we determine the threshold bias for the $(1:b)$ $T_k$-tournament game on $K_n$. We also look at the $(1:1)$ $T_k$-tournament game played on the edge set of a random graph ${\mathcal{G}_{n,p}}$ and determine the threshold probability for Maker's win. We compare these games with the clique game and discuss whether a random graph intuition is satisfied.

New arcs in projective Hjelmslev planes over Galois rings
Published in In Proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Optimal Codes and Related Topics 2007, pages 112-119, 2007 • Search Publication
It is known that some good linear codes over a finite ring (R-linear codes) arise from interesting point constellations in certain projective geometries. For example, the expurgated Nordstrom-Robinson code, a nonlinear binary [14,6,6]-code which has higher minimum distance than any linear binary [14,6]-code, can be constructed from a maximal 2-arc in the projective Hjelmslev plane over Z_4.

Double and bordered \$α\$-circulant self-dual codes over finite commutative chain rings
Published in In Proceedings of the Eleventh International Workshop on Algebraic and Combinatorial Coding Theory 2008, pages 144-150, 2008 • Search Publication
In this paper we investigate codes over finite commutative rings R, whose generator matrices are built from \$α\$-circulant matrices. For a non-trivial ideal I<R we give a method to lift such codes over R/I to codes over R, such that some isomorphic copies are avoided. For the case where I is the minimal ideal of a finite chain ring we refine this lifting method: We impose the additional restriction that lifting preserves self-duality. It will be shown that this can be achieved by solving a linear system of equations over a finite field. Finally we apply this technique to Z_4-linear double nega-circulant and bordered circulant self-dual codes. We determine the best minimum Lee distance of these codes up to length 64.
