Multigraph limits, unbounded kernels, and Banach space decorated graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a construction that allows us to define a limit object of Banach space decorated graph sequences in a generalized homomorphism density sense. This general functional analytic framework provides a universal language for various combinatorial limit notions. In particular it makes it possible to assign limit objects to multigraph sequences that are convergent in the sense of node-and-edge homomorphism numbers, and it generalizes the limit theory for graph sequences with compact decorations.

Poncelet's Theorem in the four nonisomorphic finite projective planes of order 9
We study Poncelet's Theorem in the four non-isomorphic finite projective planes of order 9. Among these planes, only the Desarguesian plane turns out to be a Poncelet plane, while the other three planes which are constructed over the miniquaternion near-field of order 9, are not. This gives a complete discussion of Poncelet's Theorem in finite projective planes of order 9.

Peak algebras, paths in the Bruhat graph and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new characterization of the peak subalgebra of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions and use this to construct a new basis for this subalgebra. As an application of these results we obtain a combinatorial formula for the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials which holds in complete generality and is simpler and more explicit than any existing one. We then show that, in a certain sense, this formula cannot be simplified.

Multicoloured Random Graphs: Constructions and Symmetry
This is a research monograph on constructions of and group actions on countable homogeneous graphs, concentrating particularly on the simple random graph and its edge-coloured variants. We study various aspects of the graphs, but the emphasis is on understanding those groups that are supported by these graphs together with links with other structures such as lattices, topologies and filters, rings and algebras, metric spaces, sets and models, Moufang loops and monoids. The large amount of background material included serves as an introduction to the theories that are used to produce the new results. The large number of references should help in making this a resource for anyone interested in beginning research in this or allied fields.

Three tutorial lectures on entropy and counting
We explain the notion of the {\em entropy} of a discrete random variable, and derive some of its basic properties. We then show through examples how entropy can be useful as a combinatorial enumeration tool. We end with a few open questions.

Edge-colorings of $K_{m,n}$ which Forbid Multicolored Cycles
Published in Utilitas Mathematica, 90: 77-84 (2013), ISSN: 0315-3681 • Search Publication
A subgraph in an edge-colored graph is multicolored if all its edges receive distinct colors. In this paper, we study the proper edge-colorings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{m,n}$ which forbid multicolored cycles. Mainly, we prove that (1) for any integer $k\geq 2$, if $n\geq 5k-6$, then any properly $n$-edge-colored $K_{k,n}$ contains a multicolored $C_{2k}$, and (2) determine the order of the properly edge-colored complete bipartite graphs which forbid multicolored $C_6$.

Buneman's theorem for trees with exatcly n vertices
Let ${\cal T}=(T,w)$ be a positive-weighted tree with at least $n$ vertices. For any $i,j \in \{1,...,n\}$, let $D_{i,j} ({\cal T})$ be the weight of the unique path in $T$ connecting $i$ and $j$. The $D_{i,j} ({\cal T})$ are called $2$-weights of ${\cal T}$ and, if we put in order the $2$-weights, the vector which has the $D_{i,j} ({\cal T})$ as components is called \emph{$2$-dissimilarity vector} of $ {\cal T}$. Given a family of positive real numbers $\{D_{i,j}\}_{i,j \in \{1,...,n\}}$, we say that a positive-weighted tree ${\cal T}=(T,w)$ realizes the family if $\{1,...,n\} \subset V(T)$ and $D_{i,j}({\cal T})=D_{i,j}$ for any $ i,j \in \{1,...,n\}$. A characterization of $2$-dissimilarity families of positive weighted trees is already known (see \cite{B}, \cite{SimP} or \cite{St}): the families must satisfy the well-known \emph{four-point condition}. However we can wonder when there exists a positive-weighted tree with \emph{exactly} $n$ vertices, $1,...,n,$ and realizing the family $\{D_{i,j}\}$. In this paper we will show that the four-point condition is necessary but no more sufficient, and so we will introduce two additional conditions (see Theorem \ref{thm:ThmAgne}).

The (2k-1)-connected multigraphs with at most k-1 disjoint cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1963, Corrádi and Hajnal proved that for all $k \ge 1$ and $n \ge 3k$, every (simple) graph on n vertices with minimum degree at least 2k contains k disjoint cycles. The same year, Dirac described the 3-connected multigraphs not containing two disjoint cycles and asked the more general question: Which (2k-1)-connected multigraphs do not contain k disjoint cycles? Recently, the authors characterized the simple graphs G with minimum degree $δ(G) \ge 2k-1$ that do not contain k disjoint cycles. We use this result to answer Dirac's question in full.

About a possible analytic approach for walks in the quarter plane with arbitrary big jumps
Published in Comptes rendus Mathematique 353 (2015) 89-94 • View Publication • BIB
In this note, we consider random walks in the quarter plane with arbitrary big jumps. We announce the extension to that class of models of the analytic approach of [G. Fayolle, R. Iasnogorodski, and V. Malyshev, Random walks in the quarter plane, Springer-Verlag, Berlin (1999)], initially valid for walks with small steps in the quarter plane. New technical challenges arise, most of them being tackled in the framework of generalized boundary value problems on compact Riemann surfaces.

Centroidal bases in graphs
Published in Networks 64(2):96-108, 2014 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of a centroidal locating set of a graph $G$, that is, a set $L$ of vertices such that all vertices in $G$ are uniquely determined by their relative distances to the vertices of $L$. A centroidal locating set of $G$ of minimum size is called a centroidal basis, and its size is the centroidal dimension $CD(G)$. This notion, which is related to previous concepts, gives a new way of identifying the vertices of a graph. The centroidal dimension of a graph $G$ is lower- and upper-bounded by the metric dimension and twice the location-domination number of $G$, respectively. The latter two parameters are standard and well-studied notions in the field of graph identification. We show that for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at least~2, $(1+o(1))\frac{\ln n}{\ln\ln n}\leq CD(G) \leq n-1$. We discuss the tightness of these bounds and in particular, we characterize the set of graphs reaching the upper bound. We then show that for graphs in which every pair of vertices is connected via a bounded number of paths, $CD(G)=Ω\left(\sqrt{|E(G)|}\right)$, the bound being tight for paths and cycles. We finally investigate the computational complexity of determining $CD(G)$ for an input graph $G$, showing that the problem is hard and cannot even be approximated efficiently up to a factor of $o(\log n)$. We also give an $O\left(\sqrt{n\ln n}\right)$-approximation algorithm.
Asymptotic Laplacian-Energy-Like Invariant of Lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $μ_1\ge μ_2\ge\cdots\geμ_n$ denote the Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ with $n$ vertices. The Laplacian-energy-like invariant, denoted by $LEL(G)= \sum_{i=1}^{n-1}\sqrt{μ_i}$, is a novel topological index. In this paper, we show that the Laplacian-energy-like per vertex of various lattices is independent of the toroidal, cylindrical, and free boundary conditions. Simultaneously, the explicit asymptotic values of the Laplacian-energy-like in these lattices are obtained. Moreover, our approach implies that in general the Laplacian-energy-like per vertex of other lattices is independent of the boundary conditions.

Highly linked tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
A (possibly directed) graph is $k$-linked if for any two disjoint sets of vertices $\{x_1, \dots, x_k\}$ and $\{y_1, \dots, y_k\}$ there are vertex disjoint paths $P_1, \dots, P_k$ such that $P_i$ goes from $x_i$ to $y_{i}$. A theorem of Bollobás and Thomason says that every $22k$-connected (undirected) graph is $k$-linked. It is desirable to obtain analogues for directed graphs as well. Although Thomassen showed that the Bollobás-Thomason Theorem does not hold for general directed graphs, he proved an analogue of the theorem for tournaments - there is a function $f(k)$ such that every strongly $f(k)$-connected tournament is $k$-linked. The bound on $f(k)$ was reduced to $O(k \log k)$ by Kühn, Lapinskas, Osthus, and Patel, who also conjectured that a linear bound should hold. We prove this conjecture, by showing that every strongly $452k$-connected tournament is $k$-linked.

Edge disjoint Hamiltonian cycles in highly connected tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
Thomassen conjectured that there is a function $f(k)$ such that every strongly $f(k)$-connected tournament contains $k$ edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles. This conjecture was recently proved by Kühn, Lapinskas, Osthus, and Patel who showed that $f(k)\leq O(k^2(\log k)^2)$ and conjectured that there is a constant $C$ such that $f(k)\leq Ck^2$. We prove this conjecture.

On the cardinality of general $h$-fold sumsets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 47(2015) 103-114 • View Publication • BIB
Let $A=\{a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_{k-1}\}$ be a set of $k$ integers. For any integer $h\ge 1$ and any ordered $k$-tuple of positive integers $\mathbf{r}=(r_0,r_1,\ldots,r_{k-1})$, we define a general $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(\mathbf{r})}A$, which is the set of all sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where $a_i$ appearing in the sum can be repeated at most $r_i$ times for $i=0,1,\ldots,k-1$. In this paper, we give the best lower bound for $|h^{(\mathbf{r})}A|$ in terms of $\mathbf{r}$ and $h$ and determine the structure of the set $A$ when $|h^{(\mathbf{r})}A|$ is minimal. This generalizes results of Nathanson, and recent results of Mistri and Pandey and also solves a problem of Mistri and Pandey.

Improved lower bounds on the number of edges in list critical and online list critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every $k$-list-critical graph ($k \ge 7$) on $n \ge k+2$ vertices has at least $\frac12 \left(k-1 + \frac{k-3}{(k-c)(k-1) + k-3}\right)n$ edges where $c = (k-3)\left(\frac12 - \frac{1}{(k-1)(k-2)}\right)$. This improves the bound established by Kostochka and Stiebitz. The same bound holds for online $k$-list-critical graphs, improving the bound established by Riasat and Schauz. Both bounds follow from a more general result stating that either a graph has many edges or it has an Alon-Tarsi orientable induced subgraph satisfying a certain degree condition.

On the game domination number of graphs with given minimum degree
In the domination game, introduced by Brešar, Klavžar and Rall in 2010, Dominator and Staller alternately select a vertex of a graph $G$. A move is legal if the selected vertex $v$ dominates at least one new vertex -- that is, if we have a $u\in N[v]$ for which no vertex from $N[u]$ was chosen up to this point of the game. The game ends when no more legal moves can be made, and its length equals the number of vertices selected. The goal of Dominator is to minimize whilst that of Staller is to maximize the length of the game. The game domination number $γ_g(G)$ of $G$ is the length of the domination game in which Dominator starts and both players play optimally. In this paper we establish an upper bound on $γ_g(G)$ in terms of the minimum degree $δ$ and the order $n$ of $G$. Our main result states that for every $δ\ge 4$, $$γ_g(G)\le \frac{30δ^4-56δ^3-258δ^2+708δ-432}{90δ^4-390δ^3+348δ^2+348δ-432}\; n.$$ Particularly, $γ_g(G) < 0.5139\; n$ holds for every graph of minimum degree 4, and $γ_g(G)< 0.4803\; n$ if the minimum degree is greater than 4. Additionally, we prove that $γ_g(G) < 0.5574\; n$ if $δ=3$.

On Hochster's formula for a class of quotient spaces of moment-angle complexes
Published in Osaka Journal of Mathematics 56 (2019), no. 1, 33--50 • Search Publication
Any finite simplicial complex K and a partition of the vertex set of K determines a canonical quotient space of the moment-angle complex of K. We prove that the cohomology groups of such a space can be computed via some Hochster's type formula, which generalizes the usual Hochster's formula for the cohomology groups of moment-angle complexes. In addition, we show that the stable decomposition of moment-angle complexes can also be extended to such spaces. This type of spaces include all the quasitoric manifolds that are pullback from the linear models. And we prove that the moment-angle complex associated to a finite simplicial poset is always homotopy equivalent to one of such spaces.

The game chromatic number of dense random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose that two players take turns coloring the vertices of a given graph G with k colors. In each move the current player colors a vertex such that neighboring vertices get different colors. The first player wins this game if and only if at the end, all the vertices are colored. The game chromatic number $χ_g(G)$ is defined as the smallest k for which the first player has a winning strategy. Recently, Bohman, Frieze and Sudakov [Random Structures and Algorithms 2008] analysed the game chromatic number of random graphs and obtained lower and upper bounds of the same order of magnitude. In this paper we improve existing results and show that with high probability, the game chromatic number $χ_g(G_{n,p})$ of dense random graphs is asymptotically twice as large as the ordinary chromatic number $χ(G_{n,p})$.
