In the present paper, we study various Erdős type geometric problems in the setting of the integers modulo $q$, where $q=p^l$ is an odd prime power. More precisely, we prove certain results about the distribution of triangles and triangle areas among the points of $E\subset \mathbb{Z}_q^2$. We also prove a dot product result for $d$-fold product subsets $E=A\times \ldots \times A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_q^d$, where $A\subset \mathbb{Z}_q$.
Minimally unbalanced diamond-free graphs and Dyck-paths

A $\{0,1\}$-matrix $\mathsf{A}$ is balanced if it does not contain a submatrix of odd order having exactly two 1's per row and per column. A graph is balanced if its clique-matrix is balanced. No characterization of minimally unbalanced graphs is known, and even no conjecture on the structure of such graphs has been posed, contrarily to what happened for perfect graphs. In this paper, we provide such a characterization for the class of diamond-free graphs and establish a connection between minimally unbalanced diamond-free graphs and Dyck-paths.
Progress in distributive homology: from q-polynomial of rooted trees to Yang-Baxter homology
This is an extended abstract of the talk given at the Oberwolfach Workshop
"Algebraic Structures in Low-Dimensional Topology", 25 May -- 31 May 2014. My goal was to describe progress in distributive homology from the previous Oberwolfach Workshop June 3 - June 9, 2012, in particular my work on Yang-Baxter homology; however I concentrated my talk on my recent discovery of q-polynomial of a rooted tree; the appropriate topic as my talk was on May 30, 2014, the 30 anniversary of the Jones polynomial, and the polynomial has its roots in the Kauffman bracket approach to the Jones polynomial.

We classify the countable homogeneous coloured multipartite graphs with any finite number of parts. By Fraisse's Theorem this amounts to classifying the families F of pairwise non-embeddable finite coloured multipartite graphs for which the class Forb(F) of multipartite graphs which forbid these is an amalgamation class. We show that once we understand such families F in the quadripartite case, things do not become any more complicated for larger numbers of parts.
Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$
In this paper, we give an algebraic construction of a new infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$ for $q\equiv 5$ or $9\pmod{12}$, which generalizes the examples found by Rodgers in \cite{rodgers} through a computer search. Furthermore, in the case where $q$ is an even power of $3$, we construct the first infinite family of affine two-intersection sets in $\mathrm{AG}(2,q)$.
The regularity method for graphs and digraphs
This MSci thesis surveys results in extremal graph theory, in particular relating to Hamilton cycles. Szeméredi's Regularity Lemma plays a central role. We also investigate the robust outexpansion property for digraphs. Kelly showed that every sufficiently large oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum in- and outdegree at least $3n/8 +o(n)$ contains any orientation of a Hamilton cycle. We use Kelly's arguments to extend his result to any robustly expanding digraph of linear degree.
Semi-algebraic Ramsey numbers

Given a finite point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, a $k$-ary semi-algebraic relation $E$ on $P$ is the set of $k$-tuples of points in $P$, which is determined by a finite number of polynomial equations and inequalities in $kd$ real variables. The description complexity of such a relation is at most $t$ if the number of polynomials and their degrees are all bounded by $t$. The Ramsey number $R^{d,t}_k(s,n)$ is the minimum $N$ such that any $N$-element point set $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ equipped with a $k$-ary semi-algebraic relation $E$, such that $E$ has complexity at most $t$, contains $s$ members such that every $k$-tuple induced by them is in $E$, or $n$ members such that every $k$-tuple induced by them is not in $E$.
We give a new upper bound for $R^{d,t}_k(s,n)$ for $k\geq 3$ and $s$ fixed. In particular, we show that for fixed integers $d,t,s$, $R^{d,t}_3(s,n) \leq 2^{n^{o(1)}},$ establishing a subexponential upper bound on $R^{d,t}_3(s,n)$. This improves the previous bound of $2^{n^C}$ due to Conlon, Fox, Pach, Sudakov, and Suk, where $C$ is a very large constant depending on $d,t,$ and $s$. As an application, we give new estimates for a recently studied Ramsey-type problem on hyperplane arrangements in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also study multi-color Ramsey numbers for triangles in our semi-algebraic setting, achieving some partial results.
An obstruction relating locally finite polygons to translation quadrangles
One of the most fundamental open problems in Incidence Geometry, posed by Tits in the 1960s, asks for the existence of so-called "locally finite generalized polygons" | that is, generalized polygons with "mixed parameters" (one being finite and the other not). In a more specialized context, another long-standing problem (from the 1990s) is as to whether the endomorphism ring of any translation generalized quadrangle is a skew field (the answer of which is known in the finite case). (The analogous problem for projective planes, and its positive solution, the "Bruck-Bose construction," lies at the very base of the whole theory of translation planes.) In this short note, we introduce a category, representing certain very specific embeddings of generalized polygons, which surprisingly controls the solution of both (apparently entirely unrelated) problems.

We derive an optimal eigenvalue ratio estimate for finite weighted graphs satisfying the curvature-dimension inequality $CD(0,\infty)$. This estimate is independent of the size of the graph and provides a general method to obtain higher order spectral estimates. The operation of taking Cartesian products is shown to be an efficient way for constructing new weighted graphs satisfying $CD(0,\infty)$. We also discuss a higher order Cheeger constant ratio estimate and related topics about expanders.

In this article we prove that every toric ideal associated with a gap-free graph $G$ has a squarefree lexicographic initial ideal. Moreover, in the particular case when the complementary graph of $G$ is chordal (i.e. when the edge ideal of $G$ has a linear resolution), we show that there exists a reduced Gröbner basis $\mathcal{G}$ of the toric ideal of $G$ such that all the monomials in the support of $\mathcal{G}$ are squarefree. Finally, we show (using work by Herzog and Hibi) that if $I$ is a monomial ideal generated in degree 2, then $I$ has a linear resolution if and only if all powers of $I$ have linear quotients, thus extending a result by Herzog, Hibi and Zheng.

The purpose of this note is to study configurations of lines in projective planes over arbitrary fields having the maximal number of intersection points where three lines meet. We give precise conditions on ground fields F over which such extremal configurations exist. We show that there does not exist a field admitting a configuration of 11 lines with 17 triple points, even though such a configuration is allowed combinatorially. Finally, we present an infinite series of configurations which have a high number of triple intersection points.
Preservation of algebraicity in free probability
We show that any matrix-polynomial combination of free noncommutative random variables each having an algebraic law has again an algebraic law. Our result answers a question raised by a recent paper of Shlyakhtenko and Skoufranis. The result belongs to a family of results with origins outside free probability theory, including a result of Aomoto asserting algebraicity of the Green function of random walk of quite general type on a free group.

Ramanujan graphs have extremal spectral properties, which imply a remarkable combinatorial behavior. In this paper we compute the high dimensional Hodge-Laplace spectrum of Ramanujan triangle complexes, and show that it implies a combinatorial expansion property, and a pseudo-randomness result. For this purpose we prove a Cheeger-type inequality and a mixing lemma of independent interest.
Universality for two-dimensional critical cellular automata
We study the class of monotone, two-state, deterministic cellular automata, in which sites are activated (or 'infected') by certain configurations of nearby infected sites. These models have close connections to statistical physics, and several specific examples have been extensively studied in recent years by both mathematicians and physicists. This general setting was first studied only recently, however, by Bollobás, Smith and Uzzell, who showed that the family of all such 'bootstrap percolation' models on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ can be naturally partitioned into three classes, which they termed subcritical, critical and supercritical.
In this paper we determine the order of the threshold for percolation (complete occupation) for every critical bootstrap percolation model in two dimensions. This 'universality' theorem includes as special cases results of Aizenman and Lebowitz, Gravner and Griffeath, Mountford, and van Enter and Hulshof, significantly strengthens bounds of Bollobás, Smith and Uzzell, and complements recent work of Balister, Bollobás, Przykucki and Smith on subcritical models.
A note on the no-three-in-line problem on a torus
In this paper we show that at most $2 \gcd(m,n)$ points can be placed with no three in a line on an $m\times n$ discrete torus. In the situation when $\gcd(m,n)$ is a prime, we completely solve the problem.
Diameter critical graphs

A graph is called diameter-$k$-critical if its diameter is $k$, and the removal of any edge strictly increases the diameter. In this paper, we prove several results related to a conjecture often attributed to Murty and Simon, regarding the maximum number of edges that any diameter-$k$-critical graph can have. In particular, we disprove a longstanding conjecture of Caccetta and Häggkvist (that in every diameter-2-critical graph, the average edge-degree is at most the number of vertices), which promised to completely solve the extremal problem for diameter-2-critical graphs.
On the other hand, we prove that the same claim holds for all higher diameters, and is asymptotically tight, resolving the average edge-degree question in all cases except diameter-2. We also apply our techniques to prove several bounds for the original extremal question, including the correct asymptotic bound for diameter-$k$-critical graphs, and an upper bound of $(\frac{1}{6} + o(1))n^2$ for the number of edges in a diameter-3-critical graph.
Free, not recursively free and non rigid arrangements
We construct counterexamples to Yoshinaga's conjecture that every free arrangement is either inductively free or rigid in characteristic zero. The smallest example has $13$ hyperplanes, its intersection lattice has a one dimensional moduli space, and it is free but not recursively free.
Total Irregularity and $f_t$-Irregularity of Linear Jaco Graphs$
Total irregularity of a simple undirected graph $G$ is defined to be $irr_t(G) = \frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{u, v \in V(G)}|d(u) - d(v)|$. See Abdo and Dimitrov [2]. We allocate the \emph{Fibonacci weight,} $f_i$ to a vertex $v_j$ of a simple connected graph, if and only if $d(v_j) = i$ and define the \emph{total fibonaccian irregularity} or $f_t-irregularity$ denoted $firr_t(G)$ for brevity, as: $firr_t(G) = \sum\limits_{i=1}^{n-1}\sum\limits_{j=i+1}^{n}|f_i - f_j|.$ The concept of an \emph{edge-joint} is also introduced to be the simple undirected graph obtained from two simple undirected graphs $G$ and $H$ by linking the edge $vu_{v \in V(G), u \in V(H)}$. This paper presents results for the undirected underlying graphs of Jaco Graphs, $J_n(x)$. Finally we pose an open problem with regards to $firr_t^\pm(G).$

In this paper, we investigate properties of modules introduced by Kraśkiewicz and Pragacz which realize Schubert polynomials as their characters. In particular, we give some characterizations of modules having a filtration by Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules. In finding criteria for filtrations, we calculate generating sets for the annihilator ideals of the lowest vectors in Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules, and derive a projectivity result concerning Kraśkiewicz-Pragacz modules.
Optimal strongly conflict-avoiding codes of even length and weight three

Strongly conflict-avoiding codes (SCACs) are employed in a slot-asynchronous multiple-access collision channel without feedback to guarantee that each active user can send at least one packet successfully in the worst case within a fixed period of time. Assume all users are assigned distinct codewords, the number of codewords in an SCAC is equal to the number of potential users that can be supported. SCACs have different combinatorial structure compared with conflict-avoiding codes (CACs) due to additional collisions incurred by partially overlapped transmissions. In this paper, we establish upper bounds on the size of SCACs of even length and weight three. Furthermore, it is shown that some optimal CACs can be used to construct optimal SCACs of weight three.
