Noncrossing arc diagrams and canonical join representations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider two problems that appear at first sight to be unrelated. The first problem is to count certain diagrams consisting of noncrossing arcs in the plane. The second problem concerns the weak order on the symmetric group. Each permutation $x$ has a canonical join representation: a unique lowest set of permutations joining to $x$. The second problem is to determine which sets of permutations appear as canonical join representations. The two problems turn out to be closely related because the noncrossing arc diagrams provide a combinatorial model for canonical join representations. The same considerations apply to more generally to lattice quotients of the weak order. Considering quotients produces, for example, a new combinatorial object counted by the Baxter numbers and an analogous new object in bijection with generic rectangulations.
Multivariate Eulerian polynomials and exclusion processes
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 486-499 • View Publication • BIB
We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and colored permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalizations of Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability-- and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.

On some subvarieties of the Grassmann variety
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 63:11 (2015), 2121-2134 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal S$ be a Desarguesian $(t-1)$--spread of $PG(rt-1,q)$, $Π$ a $m$-dimensional subspace of $PG(rt-1,q)$ and $Λ$ the linear set consisting of the elements of $\mathcal S$ with non-empty intersection with $Π$. It is known that the Plücker embedding of the elements of $\mathcal S$ is a variety of $PG(r^t-1,q)$, say ${\mathcal V}_{rt}$. In this paper, we describe the image under the Plücker embedding of the elements of $Λ$ and we show that it is an $m$-dimensional algebraic variety, projection of a Veronese variety of dimension $m$ and degree $t$, and it is a suitable linear section of ${\mathcal V}_{rt}$.

Quasi-periodic tiling with multiplicity: a lattice enumeration approach
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 54 (2015), pp. 647-662 • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-tiling problem for a convex polytope $P$ is the problem of covering $\mathbb R^d$ with translates of $P$ using a discrete multiset $Λ$ of translation vectors, such that every point in $\mathbb R^d$ is covered exactly $k$ times, except possibly for the boundary of $P$ and its translates. A classical result in the study of tiling problems is a theorem of McMullen that a convex polytope $P$ that 1-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a discrete multiset $Λ$ can, in fact, 1-tile $\mathbb R^d$ with a lattice $\mathcal L$. A generalization of McMullen's theorem for $k$-tiling was conjectured by Gravin, Robins, and Shiryaev, which states that if $P$ $k$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a discrete multiset $Λ$, then $P$ $m$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a lattice $\mathcal L$ for some $m$. In this paper, we consider the case when $P$ $k$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a discrete multiset $Λ$ such that every element of $Λ$ is contained in a quasi-periodic set $\mathcal Q$ (i.e. a finite union of translated lattices). This is motivated by the result of Gravin, Kolountzakis, Robins, and Shiryaev, showing that for $d \in \{2,3\}$, if a polytope $P$ $k$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a discrete multiset $Λ$, then $P$ $m$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a quasi-periodic set $\mathcal Q$ for some $m$. Here we show for all values of $d$ that if a polytope $P$ $k$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a discrete multiset $Λ$ that is contained in a quasi-periodic set $\mathcal Q$ that satisfies a mild hypothesis, then $P$ $m$-tiles $\mathbb R^d$ with a lattice $\mathcal L$ for some $m$. This strengthens the results of Gravin, Kolountzakis, Robins, and Shiryaev, and is a step in the direction of proving the conjecture of Gravin et al.

Directed cycle double covers and cut-obstacles
A directed cycle double cover of a graph G is a family of cycles of G, each provided with an orientation, such that every edge of G is covered by exactly two oppositely directed cycles. Explicit obstacles to the existence of a directed cycle double cover in a graph are bridges. Jaeger conjectured that bridges are actually the only obstacles. One of the difficulties in proving the Jaeger's conjecture lies in discovering and avoiding obstructions to partial strategies that, if successful, create directed cycle double covers. In this work, we suggest a way to circumvent this difficulty. We formulate a conjecture on graph connections, whose validity follows by the successful avoidance of one cut-type obstruction that we call cut-obstacles. The main result of this work claims that our 'cut-obstacles avoidance conjecture' already implies Jaeger's directed cycle double cover conjecture.
Pseudo-Gorenstein and level Hibi rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce pseudo-Gorenstein rings and characterize those Hibi rings attached to a finite distributive lattice L which are pseudo-Gorenstein. The characterization is given in terms of the poset of join-irreducible elements of L. We also present a necessary condition for Hibi rings to be level. Special attention is given to planar and hyper-planar lattices. Finally the pseudo-Goresntein and level property of Hibi rings and generalized Hibi rings is compared with each other.

Families of Metrized Graphs With Small Tau Constants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Baker and Rumely's tau lower bound conjecture claims that if the tau constant of a metrized graph is divided by its total length, this ratio must be bounded below by a positive constant for all metrized graphs. We construct several families of metrized graphs having small tau constants. In addition to numerical computations, we prove that the tau constants of the metrized graphs in one of these families, the hexagonal nets around a torus, asymptotically approach to $\frac{1}{108}$ which is our conjectural lower bound.

Refined Cauchy/Littlewood identities and six-vertex model partition functions: II. Proofs and new conjectures
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 42:555-603 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two factors present in) the partition function of the six-vertex model on a relevant domain.

A splitter theorem on 3-connected matroids and graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 69 (2018) 7-18 • View Publication • BIB
We establish the following splitter theorem for graphs and its generalization for matroids: Let $G$ and $H$ be $3$-connected simple graphs such that $G$ has an $H$-minor and $k:=|V(G)|-|V(H)|\ge 2$. Let $n:=\left\lceil k/2\right\rceil+1$. Then there are pairwise disjoint sets $X_1,\dots,X_n\subseteq E(G)$ such that each $G/X_i$ is a $3$-connected graph with an $H$-minor, each $X_i$ is a singleton set or the edge set of a triangle of $G$ with $3$ degree-$3$ vertices and $X_1\cup\cdots\cup X_n$ contains no edge sets of circuits of $G$ other than the $X_i$'s. This result extends previous ones of Whittle (for $k=1,2$) and Costalonga (for $k=3$).

Cayley Graph on Symmetric Group Generated by Elements Fixing $k$ Points
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{S}_{n}$ be the symmetric group on $[n]=\{1, \ldots, n\}$. The $k$-point fixing graph $\mathcal{F}(n,k)$ is defined to be the graph with vertex set $\mathcal{S}_{n}$ and two vertices $g$, $h$ of $\mathcal{F}(n,k)$ are joined if and only if $gh^{-1}$ fixes exactly $k$ points. In this paper, we derive a recurrence formula for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{F}(n,k)$. Then we apply our result to determine the sign of the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{F}(n,1)$.

On the regular sum-free sets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 49, October 2015, Pages 42-56 • View Publication • BIB
Cameron introduced a bijection between the set of sum-free sets and the set of all zero-one sequences. In this paper, we study the sum-free sets of natural numbers corresponding to certain zero-one sequences which contain the Cantor-like sequences and some substitution sequences, etc. Those sum- free sets considered as integer sequences are 2-regular. We also prove that sequences corresponding to certain sum-free sets are automatic.

Subset-lex: did we miss an order?
We generalize a well-known algorithm for the generation of all subsets of a set in lexicographic order with respect to the sets as lists of elements (subset-lex order). We obtain algorithms for various combinatorial objects such as the subsets of a multiset, compositions and partitions represented as lists of parts, and for certain restricted growth strings. The algorithms are often loopless and require at most one extra variable for the computation of the next object. The performance of the algorithms is very competitive even when not loopless. A Gray code corresponding to the subset-lex order and a Gray code for compositions that was found during this work are described.

A study of link graphs
Graph theory is a branch of mathematics in which pair-wise relations between objects are studied. My PhD thesis, supervised by David R. Wood, introduces and investigates a new family of graphs, called link graphs, that generalises the notions of line graphs and path graphs. An s-link is a walk of length s such that consecutive edges are different. The s-link graph of a given graph G is the graph with vertices the s-links of G, and two vertices are adjacent if their corresponding s-links form an (s + 1)-link; Or equivalently, one corresponding s-link can be shunted to the other in one step. For example, the 1-link graph of G is the line graph of G. We give a characterisation for link graphs, which leads to algorithmic solutions to their recognition and determination problems, and implies that the recognition problem belongs to NP. Moreover, based on a recursive structure of linkgraphs, we obtain results about the chromatic number, Hadwiger number and isomorphism group of link graphs. We also obtain results about the uniqueness, tree-decomposition and better-quasi-ordering of the original graphs of a given link graph.

Embedding bounded degree spanning trees in random graphs
We prove that if a tree $T$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $Δ$, then a copy of $T$ can almost surely be found in the random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,Δ\log^5 n/n)$.

Sharp threshold for embedding combs and other spanning trees in random graphs
When $k|n$, the tree $\mathrm{Comb}_{n,k}$ consists of a path containing $n/k$ vertices, each of whose vertices has a disjoint path length $k-1$ beginning at it. We show that, for any $k=k(n)$ and $ε>0$, the binomial random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,(1+ε)\log n/ n)$ almost surely contains $\mathrm{Comb}_{n,k}$ as a subgraph. This improves a recent result of Kahn, Lubetzky and Wormald. We prove a similar statement for a more general class of trees containing both these combs and all bounded degree spanning trees which have at least $εn/ \log^9n$ disjoint bare paths length $\lceil\log^9 n\rceil$. We also give an efficient method for finding large expander subgraphs in a binomial random graph. This allows us to improve a result on almost spanning trees by Balogh, Csaba, Pei and Samotij.

Election Attacks with Few Candidates

We investigate the parameterized complexity of strategic behaviors in generalized scoring rules. In particular, we prove that the manipulation, control (all the 22 standard types), and bribery problems are fixed-parameter tractable for most of the generalized scoring rules, with respect to the number of candidates. Our results imply that all these strategic voting problems are fixed-parameter tractable for most of the common voting rules, such as Plurality, r-Approval, Borda, Copeland, Maximin, Bucklin, etc., with respect to the number of candidates.

On the grid Ramsey problem and related questions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Hales--Jewett theorem is one of the pillars of Ramsey theory, from which many other results follow. A celebrated theorem of Shelah says that Hales--Jewett numbers are primitive recursive. A key tool used in his proof, now known as the cube lemma, has become famous in its own right. In its simplest form, this lemma says that if we color the edges of the Cartesian product $K_n \times K_n$ in $r$ colors then, for $n$ sufficiently large, there is a rectangle with both pairs of opposite edges receiving the same color. Shelah's proof shows that $n = r^{\binom{r+1}{2}} + 1$ suffices. More than twenty years ago, Graham, Rothschild and Spencer asked whether this bound can be improved to a polynomial in $r$. We show that this is not possible by providing a superpolynomial lower bound in $r$. We also discuss a number of related problems.
Two floor building needing eight colors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by frequency assignment in office blocks, we study the chromatic number of the adjacency graph of $3$-dimensional parallelepiped arrangements. In the case each parallelepiped is within one floor, a direct application of the Four-Colour Theorem yields that the adjacency graph has chromatic number at most $8$. We provide an example of such an arrangement needing exactly $8$ colours. We also discuss bounds on the chromatic number of the adjacency graph of general arrangements of $3$-dimensional parallelepipeds according to geometrical measures of the parallelepipeds (side length, total surface or volume).

Path Ramsey number for random graphs

Answering a question raised by Dudek and Prałat, we show that if $pn\rightarrow \infty$, w.h.p.,~whenever $G=G(n,p)$ is $2$-coloured, there exists a monochromatic path of length $n(2/3+o(1))$. This result is optimal in the sense that $2/3$ cannot be replaced by a larger constant. As part of the proof we obtain the following result which may be of independent interest. We show that given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with at least $(1-ε)\binom{n}{2}$ edges, whenever $G$ is $2$-edge-coloured, there is a monochromatic path of length at least $(2/3-100\sqrtε)n$. This is an extension of the classical result by Gerencsér and Gyárfás which says that whenever $K_n$ is $2$-coloured there is a monochromatic path of length at least $2n/3$.

A study of the crank function in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook
Published in The Mathematics Student, 2015, 84 (1-2) • Search Publication
In this note, we shall give a brief survey of the results that are found in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook related to cranks. Recent work by B. C. Berndt, H. H. Chan, S. H. Chan and W. -C. Liaw have shown conclusively that cranks was the last mathematical object that Ramanujan studied. We shall closely follow the work of Berndt, Chan, Chan and Liaw and give a brief description of their work.
