On the facial Thue choice index via entropy compression

A sequence is nonrepetitive if it contains no identical consecutive subsequences. An edge colouring of a path is nonrepetitive if the sequence of colours of its consecutive edges is nonrepetitive. By the celebrated construction of Thue, it is possible to generate nonrepetitive edge colourings for arbitrarily long paths using only three colours. A recent generalization of this concept implies that we may obtain such colourings even if we are forced to choose edge colours from any sequence of lists of size 4 (while sufficiency of lists of size 3 remains an open problem). As an extension of these basic ideas, Havet, Jendrol', Soták and Škrabul'áková proved that for each plane graph, 8 colours are sufficient to provide an edge colouring so that every facial path is nonrepetitively coloured. In this paper we prove that the same is possible from lists, provided that these have size at least 12. We thus improve the previous bound of 291 (proved by means of the Lovász Local Lemma). Our approach is based on the Moser-Tardos entropy-compression method and its recent extensions by Grytczuk, Kozik and Micek, and by Dujmović, Joret, Kozik and Wood.
The maximum number of intersections of two polygons
We investigate the maximum number of intersections between two polygons with p and q vertices, respectively, in the plane. The cases where p or q is even or the polygons do not have to be simple are quite easy and already known, but when p and q are both odd and both polygons are simple, the problem is more difficult. The conjectured maximum is (p-1)(q-1)+2 for all odd p and q.
A Generalization of Kochen-Specker Sets Relates Quantum Coloring to Entanglement-Assisted Channel Capacity

We introduce two generalizations of Kochen-Specker (KS) sets: projective KS sets and generalized KS sets. We then use projective KS sets to characterize all graphs for which the chromatic number is strictly larger than the quantum chromatic number. Here, the quantum chromatic number is defined via a nonlocal game based on graph coloring. We further show that from any graph with separation between these two quantities, one can construct a classical channel for which entanglement assistance increases the one-shot zero-error capacity. As an example, we exhibit a new family of classical channels with an exponential increase.
Parsing a sequence of qubits

We develop a theoretical framework for frame synchronization, also known as block synchronization, in the quantum domain which makes it possible to attach classical and quantum metadata to quantum information over a noisy channel even when the information source and sink are frame-wise asynchronous. This eliminates the need of frame synchronization at the hardware level and allows for parsing qubit sequences during quantum information processing. Our framework exploits binary constant-weight codes that are self-synchronizing. Possible applications may include asynchronous quantum communication such as a self-synchronizing quantum network where one can hop into the channel at any time, catch the next coming quantum information with a label indicating the sender, and reply by routing her quantum information with control qubits for quantum switches all without assuming prior frame synchronization between users.
Restricted Isometry of Fourier Matrices and List Decodability of Random Linear Codes

We prove that a random linear code over F_q, with probability arbitrarily close to 1, is list decodable at radius (1-1/q-ε) with list size L=O(1/ε^2) and rate R=Ω_q(ε^2/(log^3(1/ε))). Up to the polylogarithmic factor in (1/ε) and constant factors depending on q, this matches the lower bound L=Ω_q(1/ε^2) for the list size and upper bound R=O_q(ε^2) for the rate. Previously only existence (and not abundance) of such codes was known for the special case q=2 (Guruswami, Håstad, Sudan and Zuckerman, 2002).
In order to obtain our result, we employ a relaxed version of the well known Johnson bound on list decoding that translates the average Hamming distance between codewords to list decoding guarantees. We furthermore prove that the desired average-distance guarantees hold for a code provided that a natural complex matrix encoding the codewords satisfies the Restricted Isometry Property with respect to the Euclidean norm (RIP-2). For the case of random binary linear codes, this matrix coincides with a random submatrix of the Hadamard-Walsh transform matrix that is well studied in the compressed sensing literature.
Finally, we improve the analysis of Rudelson and Vershynin (2008) on the number of random frequency samples required for exact reconstruction of k-sparse signals of length N. Specifically, we improve the number of samples from O(k log(N) log^2(k) (log k + loglog N)) to O(k log(N) log^3(k)). The proof involves bounding the expected supremum of a related Gaussian process by using an improved analysis of the metric defined by the process. This improvement is crucial for our application in list decoding.
On the Intersection of Tolerance and Cocomparability Graphs

It has been conjectured by Golumbic and Monma in 1984 that the intersection of tolerance and cocomparability graphs coincides with bounded tolerance graphs. The conjecture has been proved under some - rather strong - \emph{structural} assumptions on the input graph; in particular, it has been proved for complements of trees, and later extended to complements of bipartite graphs, and these are the only known results so far. Our main result in this article is that the above conjecture is true for every graph $G$ that admits a tolerance representation with exactly one unbounded vertex; note here that this assumption concerns only the given tolerance \emph{representation} $R$ of $G$, rather than any structural property of $G$. Moreover, our results imply as a corollary that the conjecture of Golumbic, Monma, and Trotter is true for every graph $G=(V,E)$ that has no three independent vertices $a,b,c\in V$ such that $N(a) \subset N(b) \subset N(c)$; this is satisfied in particular when $G$ is the complement of a triangle-free graph (which also implies the above-mentioned correctness for complements of bipartite graphs). Our proofs are constructive, in the sense that, given a tolerance representation $R$ of a graph $G$, we transform $R$ into a bounded tolerance representation $R^{\ast}$ of $G$. Furthermore, we conjecture that any \emph{minimal} tolerance graph $G$ that is not a bounded tolerance graph, has a tolerance representation with exactly one unbounded vertex. Our results imply the non-trivial result that, in order to prove the conjecture of Golumbic, Monma, and Trotter, it suffices to prove our conjecture.
The maximum likelihood degree of a very affine variety

We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao's solution to Varchenko's conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion-restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and generalizes Kouchnirenko's theorem on the Newton polytope for nondegenerate hypersurfaces.

Realization of intermediate links of line arrangements
We investigate several topological and combinatorial properties of line arrangements. We associate to a line arrangement a link obtained by intersecting the arrangement with some sphere. Several topics are discussed: (a) some link configurations can be realized by complex line arrangements but not by real line arrangements; (b) if we intersect the arrangements with a vertical band instead of a sphere, what link configurations can be obtained? (c) relations between link configurations obtained by bands and spheres.

In graph theory there are intimate connections between the expansion properties of a graph and the spectrum of its Laplacian. In this paper we define a notion of combinatorial expansion for simplicial complexes of general dimension, and prove that similar connections exist between the combinatorial expansion of a complex, and the spectrum of the high dimensional Laplacian defined by Eckmann. In particular, we present a Cheeger-type inequality, and a high-dimensional Expander Mixing Lemma. As a corollary, using the work of Pach, we obtain a connection between spectral properties of complexes and Gromov's notion of geometric overlap. Using the work of Gunder and Wagner, we give an estimate for the combinatorial expansion and geometric overlap of random Linial-Meshulam complexes.
The Horn problem and planar networks

The problem of determining the set of possible eigenvalues of 3 Hermitian matrices that sum up to zero is known as the Horn problem. The answer is a polyhedral cone, which, following Knutson and Tao, can be described as the projection of a simpler cone in the space of triangular tableaux (or hives) to the boundary nodes of the tableau.
In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial problem defined in terms of certain weighted planar graphs giving rise to exactly the same polyhedral cone. In our framework, the values at the inner nodes of the triangular tableaux receive a natural interpretation. Other problems of linear algebra fit into the same scheme, among them the Gelfand--Zeitlin problem. Our approach is motivated by the works of Fomin and Zelevinsky on total positivity and by the ideas of tropicalization.

We prove that octants are cover-decomposable into multiple coverings, i.e., for any k there is an m(k) such that any m(k)-fold covering of any subset of the space with a finite number of translates of a given octant can be decomposed into k coverings. As a corollary, we obtain that any m(k)-fold covering of any subset of the plane with a finite number of homothetic copies of a given triangle can be decomposed into k coverings. Previously only some weaker bounds were known for related problems.

A classical and widely used lemma of Erdos and Szekeres asserts that for every n there exists N such that every N-term sequence a of real numbers contains an n-term increasing subsequence or an n-term nondecreasing subsequence; quantitatively, the smallest N with this property equals (n-1)^2+1. In the setting of the present paper, we express this lemma by saying that the set of predicates Phi={x_1<x_2,x_1\ge x_2}$ is Erdos-Szekeres with Ramsey function ES_Phi(n)=(n-1)^2+1.
In general, we consider an arbitrary finite set Phi={Phi_1,...,Phi_m} of semialgebraic predicates, meaning that each Phi_j=Phi_j(x_1,...,x_k) is a Boolean combination of polynomial equations and inequalities in some number k of real variables. We define Phi to be Erdos-Szekeres if for every n there exists N such that each N-term sequence a of real numbers has an n-term subsequence b such that at least one of the Phi_j holds everywhere on b, which means that Phi_j(b_{i_1},...,b_{i_k}) holds for every choice of indices i_1,i_2,...,i_k, 1<=i_1<i_2<... <i_k<= n. We write ES_Phi(n) for the smallest N with the above property.
We prove two main results. First, the Ramsey functions in this setting are at most doubly exponential (and sometimes they are indeed doubly exponential): for every Phi that is Erdős--Szekeres, there is a constant C such that ES_Phi(n) < exp(exp(Cn)). Second, there is an algorithm that, given Phi, decides whether it is Erdos-Szekeres; thus, one-dimensional Erdos-Szekeres-style theorems can in principle be proved automatically.

Maharaja Nim, Wythoff's Queen meets the Knight
New combinatorial games are introduced, of which the most pertinent is Maharaja Nim. The rules extend those of the well-known impartial game of Wythoff Nim in which two players take turn in moving a single Queen of Chess on a large board, attempting to be the first to put her in the lower left corner. Here, in addition to the classical rules a player may also move the Queen as the Knight of Chess moves. We prove that the second player's winning positions of Maharaja Nim are close to the ones of Wythoff Nim, namely they are within a bounded distance to the lines with slope $\frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}$ and $\frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{2}$ respectively. For a close relative to Maharaja Nim, where the Knight's jumps are of the form $(2,3)$ and $(3,2)$ (rather than $(1,2)$ and $(2,1)$), we also demonstrate polynomial time complexity to the decision problem of the outcome of a given position.
A combinatorial formula for fusion coefficient

Using the expansion of the inverse of the Kostka matrix in terms of tabloids as presented by Egecioglu and Remmel, we show that the fusion coefficients can be expressed as an alternating sum over cylindric tableaux. Cylindric tableaux are skew tableaux with a certain cyclic symmetry. When the skew shape of the tableau has a cutting point, meaning that the cylindric skew shape is not connected, or if its weight has at most two parts, we give a positive combinatorial formula for the fusion coefficients. The proof uses a slight modification of a sign-reversing involution introduced by Remmel and Shimozono. We discuss how this approach may work in general.
Bipartite Field Theories: from D-Brane Probes to Scattering Amplitudes

We introduce and initiate the investigation of a general class of 4d, N=1 quiver gauge theories whose Lagrangian is defined by a bipartite graph on a Riemann surface, with or without boundaries. We refer to such class of theories as Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs). BFTs underlie a wide spectrum of interesting physical systems, including: D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, their mirror configurations of D6-branes, cluster integrable systems in (0+1) dimensions and leading singularities in scattering amplitudes for N=4 SYM. While our discussion is fully general, we focus on models that are relevant for scattering amplitudes. We investigate the BFT perspective on graph modifications, the emergence of Calabi-Yau manifolds (which arise as the master and moduli spaces of BFTs), the translation between square moves in the graph and Seiberg duality and the identification of dual theories by means of the underlying Calabi-Yaus, the phenomenon of loop reduction and the interpretation of the boundary operator for cells in the positive Grassmannian as higgsing in the BFT. We develop a technique based on generalized Kasteleyn matrices that permits an efficient determination of the Calabi-Yau geometries associated to arbitrary graphs. Our techniques allow us to go beyond the planar limit by both increasing the number of boundaries of the graphs and the genus of the underlying Riemann surface. Our investigation suggests a central role for Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of leading singularities, whose full scope is yet to be uncovered.
Linear kernels and single-exponential algorithms via protrusion decompositions

A \emph{$t$-treewidth-modulator} of a graph $G$ is a set $X \subseteq V(G)$ such that the treewidth of $G-X$ is at most some constant $t-1$. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to compute a decomposition scheme for graphs $G$ that come equipped with a $t$-treewidth-modulator. This decomposition, called a \emph{protrusion decomposition}, is the cornerstone in obtaining the following two main results.
We first show that any parameterized graph problem (with parameter $k$) that has \emph{finite integer index} and is \emph{treewidth-bounding} admits a linear kernel on $H$-topological-minor-free graphs, where $H$ is some arbitrary but fixed graph. A parameterized graph problem is called treewidth-bounding if all positive instances have a $t$-treewidth-modulator of size $O(k)$, for some constant $t$. This result partially extends previous meta-theorems on the existence of linear kernels on graphs of bounded genus [Bodlaender et al., FOCS 2009] and $H$-minor-free graphs [Fomin et al., SODA 2010].
Our second application concerns the Planar-$\mathcal{F}$-Deletion problem. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a fixed finite family of graphs containing at least one planar graph. Given an $n$-vertex graph $G$ and a non-negative integer $k$, Planar-$\mathcal{F}$-Deletion asks whether $G$ has a set $X\subseteq V(G)$ such that $|X|\leq k$ and $G-X$ is $H$-minor-free for every $H\in \mathcal{F}$. Very recently, an algorithm for Planar-$\mathcal{F}$-Deletion with running time $2^{O(k)} n \log^2 n$ (such an algorithm is called \emph{single-exponential}) has been presented in [Fomin et al., FOCS 2012] under the condition that every graph in $\mathcal{F}$ is connected. Using our algorithm to construct protrusion decompositions as a building block, we get rid of this connectivity constraint and present an algorithm for the general Planar-$\mathcal{F}$-Deletion problem running in time $2^{O(k)} n^2$.
On Rainbow Cycles and Paths
In a properly edge colored graph, a subgraph using every color at most once is called rainbow. In this thesis, we study rainbow cycles and paths in proper edge colorings of complete graphs, and we prove that in every proper edge coloring of K_n, there is a rainbow path on (3/4-o(1))n vertices, improving on the previously best bound of (2n+1)/3 from Gyarfas and Mhalla. Similarly, a k-rainbow path in a proper edge coloring of K_n is a path using no color more than k times. We prove that in every proper edge coloring of K_n, there is a k-rainbow path on (1-2/(k+1)!)n vertices.
On Agaian Matrix
In this paper we discuss the isolation problem of the Agaian matrix among the 6-dimensional matrices. In general a matrix isolation could depend on the kind of equivalence one uses for complex Hadamard matrices. However the present form of Agaian matrix has such a big symmetry that both equivalence methods lead to the same result: the matrix is isolated.
