This paper studies the co-maximal graph $\Om(R)$, the induced subgraph $\G(R)$ of $\Om(R)$ whose vertex set is $R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))$ and a retract $\G_r(R)$ of $\G(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative ring. We show that the core of $\G(R)$ is a union of triangles and rectangles, while a vertex in $\G(R)$ is either an end vertex or a vertex in the core. For a non-local ring $R$, we prove that both the chromatic number and clique number of $\G(R)$ are identical with the number of maximal ideals of $R$. A graph $\G_r(R)$ is also introduced on the vertex set $\{Rx|\,x\in R\setminus (U(R)\cup J(R))\}$, and graph properties of $\G_r(R)$ are studied.

Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture asserts that every digraph (without digons) has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. We prove its weighted version for tournaments missing a generalized star. As a consequence the weighted version holds for tournaments missing a sun, star, or a complete graph.
Analyzing Walksat on random formulas

Let F be a uniformly distributed random k-SAT formula with n variables and m clauses. We prove that the Walksat algorithm from Papadimitriou (FOCS 1991)/Schoning (FOCS 1999) finds a satisfying assignment of F in polynomial time w.h.p. if m/n<ρ2^k/k for a certain constant ρ>0. This is an improvement by a factor of $Θ(k)$ over the best previous analysis of Walksat from Coja-Oghlan, Feige, Frieze, Krivelevich, Vilenchik (SODA 2009).

A recursive approach to the O(n) model on random maps via nested loops

We consider the O(n) loop model on tetravalent maps and show how to rephrase it into a model of bipartite maps without loops. This follows from a combinatorial decomposition that consists in cutting the O(n) model configurations along their loops so that each elementary piece is a map that may have arbitrary even face degrees. In the induced statistics, these maps are drawn according to a Boltzmann distribution whose parameters (the face weights) are determined by a fixed point condition. In particular, we show that the dense and dilute critical points of the O(n) model correspond to bipartite maps with large faces (i.e. whose degree distribution has a fat tail). The re-expression of the fixed point condition in terms of linear integral equations allows us to explore the phase diagram of the model. In particular, we determine this phase diagram exactly for the simplest version of the model where the loops are "rigid". Several generalizations of the model are discussed.
Random Latin square graphs

In this paper we introduce new models of random graphs, arising from Latin squares which include random Cayley graphs as a special case. We investigate some properties of these graphs including their clique, independence and chromatic numbers, their expansion properties as well as their connectivity and Hamiltonicity. The results obtained are compared with other models of random graphs and several similarities and differences are pointed out. For many properties our results for the general case are as strong as the known results for random Cayley graphs and sometimes improve the previously best results for the Cayley case.
On a problem of Erdős and Rothschild on edges in triangles

Erdős and Rothschild asked to estimate the maximum number, denoted by H(N,C), such that every N-vertex graph with at least CN^2 edges, each of which is contained in at least one triangle, must contain an edge that is in at least H(N,C) triangles. In particular, Erdős asked in 1987 to determine whether for every C>0 there is ε>0 such that H(N,C) > N^ε, for all sufficiently large N. We prove that H(N,C) = N^{O(1/log log N)} for every fixed C < 1/4. This gives a negative answer to the question of Erdős, and is best possible in terms of the range for C, as it is known that every N-vertex graph with more than (N^2)/4 edges contains an edge that is in at least N/6 triangles.

We find a set of necessary and sufficient conditions under which the weight $w:E\to\mathbb R^+$ on the graph $G=(V,E)$ can be extended to a pseudometric $d:V\times V\to\mathbb R^+$. If these conditions hold and $G$ is a connected graph, then the set $\mathfrak M_w$ of all such extensions is nonvoid and the shortest-path pseudometric $d_w$ is the greatest element of $\mathfrak M_w$ with respect to the partial ordering $d_1 \leqslant d_2$ if and only if $d_1(u,v) \leqslant d_2(u,v)$ for all $u,v\in V$. It is shown that every nonvoid poset $(\mathfrak M_w,\leqslant)$ contains the least element $ρ_{0,w}$ if and only if $G$ is a complete $k$-partite graph with $k\geqslant 2$ and in this case the explicit formula for computation of $ρ_{0,w}$ is obtained.

This paper gives an improved sum-product estimate for subsets of a finite field whose order is not prime. It is shown, under certain conditions, that $$\max\{|A+A|,|A\cdot{A}|\}\gg{\frac{|A|^{12/11}}{(\log_2|A|)^{5/11}}}.$$ This new estimate matches, up to a logarithmic factor, the current best known bound obtained over prime fields by Rudnev (\cite{mishaSP}).
On the asymptotics of higher-dimensional partitions

We conjecture that the asymptotic behavior of the numbers of solid (three-dimensional) partitions is identical to the asymptotics of the three-dimensional MacMahon numbers. Evidence is provided by an exact enumeration of solid partitions of all integers <=68 whose numbers are reproduced with surprising accuracy using the asymptotic formula (with one free parameter) and better accuracy on increasing the number of free parameters. We also conjecture that similar behavior holds for higher-dimensional partitions and provide some preliminary evidence for four and five-dimensional partitions.

A connection between real poles of the growth functions for Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic space of dimensions three and greater and algebraic integers is investigated. In particular, a geometric convergence of fundamental domains for cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups with finite-volume limiting polyhedron provides a relation between Salem numbers and Pisot numbers. Several examples conclude this work.
Algebraic/combinatorial proofs of Cayley-type identities for derivatives of determinants and pfaffians

The classic Cayley identity states that \det(\partial) (\det X)^s = s(s+1)...(s+n-1) (\det X)^{s-1} where X=(x_{ij}) is an n-by-n matrix of indeterminates and \partial=(\partial/\partial x_{ij}) is the corresponding matrix of partial derivatives. In this paper we present straightforward combinatorial proofs of a variety of Cayley-type identities, both old and new. The most powerful of these proofs employ Grassmann algebra (= exterior algebra) and Grassmann-Berezin integration. Among the new identities proven here are a pair of "diagonal-parametrized" Cayley identities, a pair of "Laplacian-parametrized" Cayley identities, and the "product-parametrized" and "border-parametrized" rectangular Cayley identities.

For every integer $r\ge3$ and every $\eps>0$ we construct a graph with maximum degree $r-1$ whose circular total chromatic number is in the interval $(r,r+\eps)$. This proves that (i) every integer $r\ge3$ is an accumulation point of the set of circular total chromatic numbers of graphs, and (ii) for every $Δ\ge2$, the set of circular total chromatic numbers of graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ is infinite. All these results hold for the set of circular total chromatic numbers of bipartite graphs as well.
KP solitons and total positivity for the Grassmannian

Soliton solutions of the KP equation have been studied since 1970, when Kadomtsev and Petviashvili proposed a two-dimensional dispersive wave equation now known as the KP equation. It is well-known that one can use the Wronskian method to construct a soliton solution to the KP equation from each point of the real Grassmannian Gr_kn. More recently several authors have studied the regular solutions that one obtains in this way: these come from points of the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In this paper we exhibit a surprising connection between the theory of total positivity for the Grassmannian, and the structure of regular soliton solutions to the KP equation. By exploiting this connection, we obtain new insights into the structure of KP solitons, as well as new interpretations of the combinatorial objects indexing cells of (Gr_kn)_{>= 0}. In particular, we completely classify the spatial patterns of the soliton solutions coming from (Gr_2n)_{>0}, as well as those coming from (Gr_kn)_{>= 0} when the absolute value of the time parameter is sufficiently large. We also demonstrate an intriguing connection between soliton graphs for (Gr_kn)_{>0} and the cluster algebras of Fomin and Zelevinsky, and we use this connection to solve the inverse problem for generic KP solitons coming from (Gr_kn)_{>0}. Finally we construct all the soliton graphs for (Gr_2n)_{>0} using the triangulations of n-gon.

We describe a general approach of determining the distribution of spanning subgraphs in the random graph $\G(n,p)$. In particular, we determine the distribution of spanning subgraphs of certain given degree sequences, which is a generalisation of the $d$-factors, of spanning triangle-free subgraphs, of (directed) Hamilton cycles and of spanning subgraphs that are isomorphic to a collection of vertex disjoint (directed) triangles.

In this paper we prove that the $P(q,\ell)$ ($q$ odd prime power and $\ell>1$ odd) commutative semifields constructed by Bierbrauer in \cite{BierbrauerSub} are isotopic to some commutative presemifields constructed by Budaghyan and Helleseth in \cite{BuHe2008}. Also, we show that they are strongly isotopic if and only if $q\equiv 1(mod\,4)$. Consequently, for each $q\equiv -1(mod\,4)$ there exist isotopic commutative presemifields of order $q^{2\ell}$ ($\ell>1$ odd) defining CCZ--inequivalent planar DO polynomials.
Large deviations for the degree structure in preferential attachment schemes

Preferential attachment schemes, where the selection mechanism is linear and possibly time-dependent, are considered, and an infinite-dimensional large deviation principle for the sample path evolution of the empirical degree distribution is found by Dupuis-Ellis-type methods. Interestingly, the rate function, which can be evaluated, contains a term which accounts for the cost of assigning a fraction of the total degree to an "infinite" degree component, that is, when an atypical "condensation" effect occurs with respect to the degree structure. As a consequence of the large deviation results, a sample path a.s. law of large numbers for the degree distribution is deduced in terms of a coupled system of ODEs from which power law bounds for the limiting degree distribution are given. However, by analyzing the rate function, one can see that the process can deviate to a variety of atypical nonpower law distributions with finite cost, including distributions typically associated with sub and superlinear selection models.
Enumerations deciding the weak Lefschetz property
We introduce a natural correspondence between artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables and punctured hexagonal regions. We use this correspondence to investigate the algebras for the presence of the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we relate the field characteristics in which such an algebra fails to have the weak Lefschetz property to the prime divisors of the enumeration of signed lozenge tilings of the associated punctured hexagonal region. On the one side this allows us to establish the weak Lefschetz property in many new cases.
For numerous classes of punctured hexagonal regions we find closed formulae for the enumerations of signed lozenge tilings, and thus the field characteristics in which the associated algebras fail to the have the weak Lefschetz property. Further, we offer a conjecture for a closed formula for the enumerations of signed lozenge tilings of symmetric punctured hexagonal regions. These formulae are exploited to lend further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miró-Roig, and the second author that classifies the {\em level} artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. Moreover, the formulae are used to generate families of algebras which never, or always, have the weak Lefschetz property, regardless of field characteristic. Finally, we determine (in one case, depending on the presence of the weak Lefschetz property) the splitting type of the syzygy bundle of an artinian monomial almost complete intersection in three variables, when the characteristic of the base field is zero.
Our results convey an intriguing interplay between problems in algebra, combinatorics, and algebraic geometry, which raises new questions and deserves further investigation.
On the divisibility of $#\Hom(Γ,G)$ by $|G|
We extend and reformulate a result of Solomon on the divisibility of the title. We show, for example, that if $Γ$ is a finitely generated group, then $|G|$ divides $#\Hom(Γ,G)$ for every finite group $G$ if and only if $Γ$ has infinite abelianization. As a consequence we obtain some arithmetic properties of the number of subgroups of a given index in such a group $Γ$.
