Some Combinatorial Identities from the Random Walk
Eight combinatorial identities are listed and proved by counting paths in the one-dimensional random walk. Four of these identities are assumed to be new.

For $n\ge 5$ let $T_n'$ denote the unique tree on $n$ vertices with $Δ(T_n')=n-2$, and let $T_n^*=(V,E)$ be the tree on $n$ vertices with $V=\{v_0,v_1,\ldots,$ $v_{n-1}\}$ and $E=\{v_0v_1,\ldots,v_0v_{n-3},$ $v_{n-3}v_{n-2},v_{n-2}v_{n-1}\}$. In this paper we evaluate the Ramsey numbers $r(G_m,T_n')$ and $r(G_m,T_n^*)$, where $G_m$ is a connected graph of order $m$. As examples, for $n\ge 8$ we have $r(T_n',T_n^*)=r(T_n^*,T_n^*)=2n-5$, for $n>m\ge 7$ we have $r(K_{1,m-1},T_n^*)=m+n-3$ or $m+n-4$ according as $m-1\mid (n-3)$ or $m-1\nmid (n-3)$, for $m\ge 7$ and $n\ge (m-3)^2+2$ we have $r(T_m^*,T_n^*)=m+n-3$ or $m+n-4$ according as $m-1\mid (n-3)$ or $m-1\nmid (n-3)$.
Chio Condensation and Random Sign Matrices
This is to suggest a new approach to the old and open problem of counting the number f_n of Z-singular n x n matrices with entries from {-1,+1}: Comparison of two measures, none of them the uniform measure, one of them closely related to it, the other asymptotically under control by a recent theorem of Bourgain, Vu and Wood.
We will define a measure P_chio on the set {-1,0,+1}^([n-1]^2) of all (n-1)x(n-1)-matrices with entries from {-1,0,+1} which (owing to a determinant identity published by M. F. Chio in 1853) is closely related to the uniform measures on {-1,+1}^([n]^2) and {0,1}^([n-1]^2) and at the same time it intriguingly mimics the so-called lazy coin flip distribution P_lcf on {-1,0,+1}^([n-1]^2), with the resemblance fading more and more as the events get smaller. This is relevant in view of a recent theorem of J. Bourgain, V. H. Vu and P. M. Wood (J. Funct. Anal. 258 (2010), 559--603) which proves that if the entries of an n x n matrix whose {-1,0,+1}-entries are governed by P_lcf and fully independent (they are not when governed by P_chio), then an asymptotically optimal bound on the singularity probability over Z can be proved. We will characterize P_chio graph-theoretically and use the characterization to prove that given a B in {-1,0,+1}^([n-1]^2), deciding whether P_chio[B] = P_lcf[B] is equivalent to deciding an evasive graph property, hence the time complexity of this decision is Omega(n^2). Moreover, we will prove k-wise independence properties of P_chio.
Many questions suggest themselves that call for further work. In particular, the present paper will close with more constrained equivalent formulations of the conjecture f_n/2^(n^2) ~ (1/2 + o(1))^n.
Lower bounds on the obstacle number of graphs

Given a graph $G$, an {\em obstacle representation} of $G$ is a set of points in the plane representing the vertices of $G$, together with a set of connected obstacles such that two vertices of $G$ are joined by an edge if and only if the corresponding points can be connected by a segment which avoids all obstacles. The {\em obstacle number} of $G$ is the minimum number of obstacles in an obstacle representation of $G$. It is shown that there are graphs on $n$ vertices with obstacle number at least $Ω({n}/{\log n})$.
A step towards the cluster positivity conjecture
We prove a conjecture of Kontsevich, which asserts that the iterations of the noncommutative rational map $F_r:(x,y)-->(xyx^{-1},(1+y^r)x^{-1})$ are given by noncommutative Laurent polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients.
The brick polytope of a sorting network

The associahedron is a polytope whose graph is the graph of flips on triangulations of a convex polygon. Pseudotriangulations and multitriangulations generalize triangulations in two different ways, which have been unified by Pilaud and Pocchiola in their study of flip graphs on pseudoline arrangements with contacts supported by a given sorting network.
In this paper, we construct the brick polytope of a sorting network, obtained as the convex hull of the brick vectors associated to each pseudoline arrangement supported by the network. We combinatorially characterize the vertices of this polytope, describe its faces, and decompose it as a Minkowski sum of matroid polytopes.
Our brick polytopes include Hohlweg and Lange's many realizations of the associahedron, which arise as brick polytopes for certain well-chosen sorting networks. We furthermore discuss the brick polytopes of sorting networks supporting pseudoline arrangements which correspond to multitriangulations of convex polygons: our polytopes only realize subgraphs of the flip graphs on multitriangulations and they cannot appear as projections of a hypothetical multiassociahedron.

We investigate the behavior of electric potentials on distance-regular graphs, and extend some results of a prior paper. Our main result, Theorem 4, shows(together with Corollary 3) that if distance is measured by the electric resistance between points then all points are close to being equidistant on a distance-regular graph with large valency. A number of auxiliary results are also presented.
Hierarchical Simple Games: Representations and Weightedness

In many situations, both in human and artificial societies, cooperating agents have different status with respect to the activity and it is not uncommon that certain actions are only allowed to coalitions that satisfy certain criteria, e.g., to sufficiently large coalitions or coalitions which involve players of sufficient seniority. Simmons (1988) formalized this idea in the context of secret sharing schemes by defining the concept of a (disjunctive) hierarchical access structure. Tassa (2007) introduced their conjunctive counterpart. From the game theory perspective access structures in secret sharing schemes are simple games.
In this paper we prove the duality between disjunctive and conjunctive hierarchical games. We introduce a canonical representation theorem for both types of hierarchical games and characterize disjunctive ones as complete games with a unique shift-maximal losing coalition. We give a short combinatorial proof of the Beimel-Tassa-Weinreb (2008) characterization of weighted disjunctive hierarchical games. By duality we get similar theorems for conjunctive hierarchical games.

In theoretical chemistry molecular structure descriptors are used for modeling physico-chemical, pharmacological, toxicologic, biological and other properties of chemical compounds. In this paper we study distance-based graph invariants and present some improved and corrected sharp inequalities for PI, vertex PI, Szeged and edge Szeged topological indices, involving the number of vertices and edges, the diameter, the number of triangles and the Zagreb indices. In addition, we give a complete characterization of the extremal graphs.

The eccentric connectivity index $ξ^c$ is a novel distance--based molecular structure descriptor that was recently used for mathematical modeling of biological activities of diverse nature. It is defined as $ξ^c (G) = \sum_{v \in V (G)} deg (v) \cdot ε(v)$\,, where $deg (v)$ and $ε(v)$ denote the vertex degree and eccentricity of $v$\,, respectively. We survey some mathematical properties of this index and furthermore support the use of eccentric connectivity index as topological structure descriptor. We present the extremal trees and unicyclic graphs with maximum and minimum eccentric connectivity index subject to the certain graph constraints. Sharp lower and asymptotic upper bound for all graphs are given and various connections with other important graph invariants are established. In addition, we present explicit formulae for the values of eccentric connectivity index for several families of composite graphs and designed a linear algorithm for calculating the eccentric connectivity index of trees. Some open problems and related indices for further study are also listed.
On the 3-$γ_t$-Critical Graphs of Order $Δ(G)+3$
Let $γ_t(G)$ be the total domination number of graph $G$, a graph $G$ is $k$-total domination vertex critical (or\ just\ $k$-$γ_t$-critical) if $γ_t(G)=k$, and for any vertex $v$ of $G$ that is not adjacent to a vertex of degree one, $γ_t(G-v)=k-1$. Mojdeh and Rad \cite{MR06} proposed an open problem: Does there exist a 3-$γ_t$-critical graph $G$ of order $Δ(G)+3$ with $Δ(G)$ odd? In this paper, we prove that there exists a 3-$γ_t$-critical graph $G$ of order $Δ(G)+3$ with odd $Δ(G)\geq 9$.
Roman domination number of Generalized Petersen Graphs P(n,2)
A $Roman\ domination\ function$ on a graph $G=(V, E)$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow\{0,1,2\}$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $u$ with $f(u)=0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $v$ with $f(v)=2$. The $weight$ of a Roman domination function $f$ is the value $f(V(G))=\sum_{u\in V(G)}f(u)$. The minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on a graph $G$ is called the $Roman\ domination\ number$ of $G$, denoted by $γ_{R}(G)$. In this paper, we study the {\it Roman domination number} of generalized Petersen graphs P(n,2) and prove that $γ_R(P(n,2)) = \lceil {\frac{8n}{7}}\rceil (n \geq 5)$.
On the Domination Number of Generalized Petersen Graphs P(ck,k)
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple connected and undirected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is a $dominating$ $set$ if for each $v \in V(G)$ either $v \in S$ or $v$ is adjacent to some $w \in S$. That is, $S$ is a dominating set if and only if $N[S]=V(G)$. The domination number $γ(G)$ is the minimum cardinalities of minimal dominating sets. In this paper, we give an improved upper bound on the domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(ck,k)$ for $c\geq 3$ and $k\geq 3$. We also prove that $γ(P(4k,k))=2k+1$ for even $k$, $γ(P(5k,k))=3k$ for all $k\geq 1$, and $γ(P(6k,k))=\lceil\frac{10k}{3}\rceil$ for $k\geq 1$ and $k\neq 2$.

Let Y be a divisor on a smooth algebraic variety X. We investigate the geometry of the Jacobian scheme of Y, homological invariants derived from logarithmic differential forms along Y, and their relationship with the property that Y is a free divisor.
We consider arrangements of hyperplanes as a source of examples and counterexamples. In particular, we make a complete calculation of the local cohomology of logarithmic forms of generic hyperplane arrangements.

In this paper, we consider terminal reflexive polytopes arising from finite directed graphs and study the problem of deciding which directed graphs yield smooth Fano polytopes. We show that any centrally symmetric or pseudo-symmetric smooth Fano polytopes can be obtained from directed graphs. Moreover, by using directed graphs, we provide new examples of smooth Fano polytopes whose corresponding varieties admit Kähler--Einstein metrics.

Motivated by the definition of the edge elimination polynomial of a graph we define the covered components polynomial counting spanning subgraphs with respect to their number of components, edges and covered components. We prove a recurrence relation, which shows that both graph polynomials are substitution instances of each other. We give some properties of the covered components polynomial and some results concerning relations to other graph polynomials.

We generalize the Mittag-Leffler function by attaching an exponent to its Taylor coefficients. The main result is an asymptotic formula valid in sectors of the complex plane, which extends work by Le Roy [Bull. des sciences math. 24, 1900] and Evgrafov [Asimptoticheskie otsenki i tselye funktsii, 1979]. It is established by Plana's summation formula in conjunction with the saddle point method. As an application, we (re-)prove a non-holonomicity result about powers of the factorial sequence.
