Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde introduced a refinement of the Narayana polynomials by distinguishing between old (leftmost child) and young leaves of plane trees. They also provided a refinement of Coker's formula by constructing a bijection. In fact, Coker's formula establishes a connection between the Narayana polynomials and the Motzkin polynomials, which implies the $γ$-positivity of the Narayana polynomials. In this paper, we introduce the polynomial $G_{n}(x_{11},x_{12},x_2;y_{11},y_{12},y_2)$, which further refine the Narayana polynomials by considering leaves of plane trees that have no siblings. We obtain the generating function for $G_n(x_{11},x_{12},x_2;y_{11},y_{12},y_2)$. To achieve further refinement of Coker's formula based on the polynomial $G_n(x_{11},x_{12},x_2;y_{11},y_{12},y_2)$, we consider a refinement $M_n(u_1,u_2,u_3;v_1,v_2)$ of the Motzkin polynomials by classifying the old leaves of a tip-augmented plane tree into three categories and the young leaves into two categories. The generating function for $M_n(u_1,u_2,u_3;v_1,v_2)$ is also established, and the refinement of Coker's formula is immediately derived by combining the generating function for $G_n(x_{11},x_{12},x_2;y_{11},y_{12},y_2)$ and the generating function for $M_n(u_1,u_2,u_3;v_1,v_2)$. We derive several interesting consequences from this refinement of Coker's formula. The method used in this paper is the grammatical approach introduced by Chen. We develop a unified grammatical approach to exploring polynomials associated with the statistics defined on plane trees. As you will see, the derivations of the generating functions for $G_n(x_{11},x_{12},x_2;{y}_{11},{y}_{12},y_2)$ and $M_n(u_1,u_2,u_3;v_1,v_2)$ become quite simple once their grammars are established.

For $0\leq k\leq n-1$, we introduce a family of $k$-skeletal paths which are counted by the $n$-th Catalan number for each $k$, and specialize to Dyck paths when $k=n-1$. We similarly introduce $k$-skeletal parking functions which are equinumerous with the spanning trees on $n+1$ vertices for each $k$, and specialize to classical parking functions for $k=n-1$. The preceding constructions are generalized to paths lying in a trapezoid with base $c > 0$ and southeastern diagonal of slope $1/m$; $c$ and $m$ need not be integers. We give bijections among these families when $k$ varies with $m$ and $c$ fixed. Our constructions are motivated by chip firing and have connections to combinatorial representation theory and tropical geometry.
Constructing reflection-symmetric flexible realisations of graphs

We study reflection-symmetric realisations of symmetric graphs in the plane that allow a continuous symmetry and edge-length preserving deformation. To do so, we identify a necessary combinatorial condition on graphs with reflection-symmetric flexible realisations. This condition is based on a specific type of edge colouring, where edges are assigned one of three colours in a symmetric way. From some of these colourings we also construct concrete reflection-symmetric realisations with their corresponding symmetry preserving motion. We study also a specific class of reflection-symmetric realisations consisting of triangles and parallelograms.

Ascent sequences play a key role in the combinatorics of Fishburn structures. Difference ascent sequences are a natural generalization obtained by replacing ascents with $d$-ascents. We have recently extended the so-called hat map to difference ascent sequences, and self-modified difference ascent sequences are the fixed points under this map. We characterize self-modified difference ascent sequences and enumerate them in terms of certain generalized Fibonacci polynomials. Furthermore, we describe the corresponding subset of $d$-Fishburn permutations.
A generalization of the hexastix arrangement to higher dimensions
Hexastix is an arrangement of non-overlapping infinite hexagonal prisms in four different directions that cover $\frac{3}{4}$ of space. We consider a possible generalization to $n$ dimensions, based on the permutohedral lattice $A^*_n$. The central lines of the generalized prisms are going to be oriented in $n+1$ different directions (parallel to the shortest non-zero vectors of $A^*_n$). The projection of the lines oriented in any direction along that direction to a hyperplane perpendicular to it is required to be a translation of the corresponding projection of $A^*_n$, and the minimal distance between lines oriented in any two given directions should be maximal. It is shown that this is possible if $n$ is a prime power. Also, the proportion of $n$-space that is covered is calculated for $n \in \{4, 5\}$, and an alternative generalization is briefly considered.
On determinants of tournaments and $\mathcal{D}_k$
Let $T$ be a tournament with $n$ vertices $v_1,\ldots,v_n$. The skew-adjacency matrix of $T$ is the $n\times n$ zero-diagonal matrix $S_T = [s_{ij}]$ in which $s_{ij}=-s_{ji}=1$ if $ v_i $ dominates $ v_j $. We define the determinant $\det(T)$ of $ T $ as the determinant of $ S_T $. It is well-known that $\det(T)=0$ if $n$ is odd and $\det(T)$ is the square of an odd integer if $n$ is even. Let $\mathcal{D}_k$ be the set of tournaments whose all subtournaments have determinant at most $ k^{2} $, where $k$ is a positive odd integer. The necessary and sufficient condition for $T\in \mathcal{D}_1$ or $T\in \mathcal{D}_3$ has been characterized in $2023$. In this paper, we characterize the set $\mathcal{D}_5$, obtain some properties of $\mathcal{D}_k$. Moreover, for any positive odd integer $k$, we give a construction of a tournament $T$ satisfying that $\det(T)=k^2$, and $T\in \mathcal{D}_k\backslash\mathcal{D}_{k-2}$ if $k\geq 3$, which implies $\mathcal{D}_k\backslash\mathcal{D}_{k-2}$ is not an empty set for $k\geq 3$.
Interpolation of point configurations in the discrete plane
Defining distances over finite fields formally by $||x-y||:=(x_1-y_1)^2+\cdots + (x_d-y_d)^2$ for $x,y\in \mathbb{F}_q^d$, distance problems naturally arise in analogy to those studied by Erdős and Falconer in Euclidean space. Given a graph $G$ and a set $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$, let $Δ_G(E)$ be the generalized distance set corresponding to $G$. In the case when $G$ is the complete graph on $k+1$ vertices, Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan, and Rudnev showed that when $|E|\geq q^{d-\frac{d-1}{k+1}}$, it follows that $|Δ_G(E)|\geq cq^{\binom{k+1}{2}}$. In the case when $k=d=2$, the threshold can be improved to $|E|\geq q^{\frac{8}{5}}$.
Moreover, Jardine, Iosevich, and McDonald showed that in the case when $G$ is a tree with $k+1$ vertices, then whenever $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^d$, $d\geq 2$ satisfies $|E|\geq C_kq^{\frac{d+1}{2}}$, it follows that $Δ_G(E)=\mathbb{F}_q^k$. In this paper, we present a technique which enables us to study certain graphs with both rigid and non-rigid components. In particular, we show that for $E\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^2$, $q=p^n$, $n$ odd, $p\equiv 3 \ \text{mod} \ 4$, and $G$ is the graph consisting of two triangles joined at a vertex, then whenever $|E|\geq q^{\frac{12}{7}}$, it follows that $|Δ_G(E)|\geq cq^6$.
A complete characterization of pairs of binary phylogenetic trees with identical $A_k$-alignments

Phylogenetic trees play a key role in the reconstruction of evolutionary relationships. Typically, they are derived from aligned sequence data (like DNA, RNA, or proteins) by using optimization criteria like, e.g., maximum parsimony (MP). It is believed that the latter is able to reconstruct the \enquote{true} tree, i.e., the tree that generated the data, whenever the number of substitutions required to explain the data with that tree is relatively small compared to the size of the tree (measured in the number $n$ of leaves of the tree, which represent the species under investigation). However, reconstructing the correct tree from any alignment first and foremost requires the given alignment to perform differently on the \enquote{correct} tree than on others.
A special type of alignments, namely so-called $A_k$-alignments, has gained considerable interest in recent literature. These alignments consist of all binary characters (\enquote{sites}) which require precisely $k$ substitutions on a given tree. It has been found that whenever $k$ is small enough (in comparison to $n$), $A_k$-alignments uniquely characterize the trees that generated them. However, recent literature has left a significant gap between $n\leq 2k+2$ -- namely the cases in which no such characterization is possible -- and $n\geq 4k$ -- namely the cases in which this characterization works. It is the main aim of the present manuscript to close this gap, i.e., to present a full characterization of all pairs of trees that share the same $A_k$-alignment. In particular, we show that indeed every binary phylogenetic tree with $n$ leaves is uniquely defined by its $A_k$-alignments if $n\geq 2k+3$. By closing said gap, we also ensure that our result is optimal.

We study a collection of Hessenberg varieties in the type A flag variety associated to a nonzero semisimple matrix whose conjugacy class has minimal dimension. We prove each such minimal semisimple Hessenberg variety is a union Richardson varieties and compute this set of Richardson varieties explicitly. Our methods leverage the notion of matrix Hessenberg schemes to answer questions about the geometry of minimal semisimple Hessenberg varieties using commutative algebra and known results on Schubert determinantal ideals. In particular, we show that all type A minimal semisimple matrix Hessenberg schemes are reduced.
A $5/4$-Approximation for Two-Edge Connectivity

The 2-Edge-Connected Spanning Subgraph problem (2ECSS) is among the most basic survivable network design problems: given an undirected and unweighted graph, the task is to find a spanning subgraph with the minimum number of edges that is 2-edge-connected (i.e., it remains connected after the removal of any single edge). 2ECSS is an NP-hard problem that has been extensively studied in the context of approximation algorithms. The best known approximation ratio for 2ECSS prior to this work was $1.3+\varepsilon$, for any constant $\varepsilon>0$ [Garg, Grandoni, Jabal-Ameli'23; Kobayashi, Noguchi'23]. In this paper, we present a 5/4-approximation algorithm. Our algorithm is also faster for small values of $\varepsilon$: its running time is $n^{O(1)}$ instead of $n^{O(1/\varepsilon)}$.
A short note on spanning even trees
We call a tree $T$ is \emph{even} if every pair of its leaves is joined by a path of even length. Jackson and Yoshimoto~[J. Graph Theory, 2024] conjectured that every $r$-regular nonbipartite connected graph $G$ has a spanning even tree. They verified this conjecture for the case when $G$ has a $2$-factor. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds when $r$ is odd, thereby resolving the only remaining unsolved case for this conjecture.

A relational structure R is ultrahomogeneous if every isomorphism of finite induced substructures of R extends to an automorphism of R. We classify the ultrahomogeneous finite binary relational structures with one asymmetric binary relation and arbitrarily many unary relations. In other words, we classify the finite vertex-colored oriented ultrahomogeneous graphs. The classification comprises several general methods with which directed graphs can be combined or extended to create new ultrahomogeneous graphs. Together with explicitly given exceptions, we obtain exactly all vertex-colored oriented ultrahomogeneous graphs this way. Our main technique is a technical tool that characterizes precisely under which conditions two binary relational structures with disjoint unary relations can be combined to form a larger ultrahomogeneous structure.

We give a sufficient condition on a positive integer $m$ for every stratum of a given real toric hyperplane arrangement to contain a rational point of denominator $m$. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition on $m$ for the degree $m$ Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf on a smooth toric variety to contain all possible summands in the Picard group.
On the spectral radius of unbalanced signed bipartite graphs

A signed graph is one that features two types of edges: positive and negative. Balanced signed graphs are those in which all cycles contain an even number of positive edges. In the adjacency matrix of a signed graph, entries can be $0$, $-1$, or $1$, depending on whether $ij$ represents no edge, a negative edge, or a positive edge, respectively. The index of the adjacency matrix of a signed graph $\dot{G}$ is less or equal to the index of the adjacency matrix of its underlying graph $G$, i.e., $λ_1(\dot{G}) \le λ_1(G)$. Indeed, if $\dot{G}$ is balanced, then $λ_1(\dot{G})=λ_1(G)$. This inequality becomes strict when $\dot{G}$ is an unbalanced signed graph. Recently, Brunetti and Stanić found the whole list of unbalanced signed graphs on $n$ vertices with maximum (resp. minimum) spectral radius. To our knowledge, there has been little research on this problem when unbalanced signed graphs are confined to specific graph classes. In this article, we demonstrate that there is only one unbalanced signed bipartite graph on $n$ vertices with maximum spectral radius, up to an operation on the signed edges known as switching. Additionally, we investigate unbalanced signed complete bipartite graphs on $n$ vertices with a bounded number of edges and maximum spectral radius, where the negative edges induce a tree.
Singularly cospectral circulant graphs
Two graphs having the same spectrum are said to be cospectral. Two graphs such that the absolute values of their nonzero eigenvalues coincide are singularly cospectral graphs. Cospectrality implies singular cospectrality, but the converse may be false. In this paper, we present sufficient conditions for two circulant graphs, with an even number of vertices, to be noncospectral singularly cospectral graphs. In this analysis, we study when a pair of these graphs have the same or distinct inertia. In addition, we show that two singularly cospectral circulant graphs with an odd prime number of vertices are isomorphic.
Some $q$-supercongruences for multiple basic hypergeometric series
In terms of several summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, two forms of the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, the creative microscoping method introduced by Guo and Zudilin, Guo and Li's lemma, and El Bachraoui's lemma, we establish some $q$-supercongruences for multiple basic hypergeometric series modulo the fifth and sixth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial. In detail, we generalize Guo and Li's two $q$-supercongruences for double basic hypergeometric series, which are related to $q$-analogues of Van Hamme's (C.2) supercongruence and Long's supercongruence, respectively. In addition, we also present two conclusions for double and triple hypergeometric series associated with Van Hamme's (D.2) supercongruence.

A crystallization of a PL manifold is an edge-colored graph that corresponds to a contracted triangulation of the manifold, facilitating the study of its topological and combinatorial properties. A small cover over a simple convex $n$-polytope $P^n$ is a closed $n$-manifold with a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action such that its orbit space is homeomorphic to $P^n$. In this article, we study the crystallizations of small covers over the $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ and the prism $Δ^{n-1} \times I$. It is known that the small cover over the $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ is $\mathbb{RP}^n$. For every $n\geq 2$, we prove that $\mathbb{RP}^n$ has a unique $2^n$-vertex crystallization. We also demonstrate that there are exactly $1 + 2^{n-1}$ D-J equivalence classes of small covers over the prism $Δ^{n-1} \times I$, where $n\geq 3$. For each $\mathbb{Z}_2$-characteristic function of $Δ^{n-1} \times I$, we construct a $2^{n-1}(n+1)$-vertex crystallization of the small cover $M^n(λ)$ with regular genus $1 + 2^{n-4}(n^2 - 2n - 3)$, where $n\geq 4$. In particular, we construct four orientable and four non-orientable $\mathbb{RP}^3$-bundles over $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to D-J equivalence with regular genus 6.

In this paper, we study the strong zero-divisor graph of a p.q.-Baer $*$-ring. We determine the condition on a p.q.-Baer $*$-ring (in terms of the smallest central projection in a lattice of central projections of a $*$-ring), so that its strong zero-divisor graph contains a cut vertex. It is proved that the set of cut vertices of a strong zero-divisor graph of a p.q.-Baer $*$-ring forms a complete subgraph. We prove that the complement of the strong zero-divisor graph of a p.q.-Baer $*$-ring is connected if and only if the $*$-ring contains at least six central projections. We characterize the diameter and girth of the complement of a strong zero-divisor graph of a p.q.-Baer $*$-ring. Also, we characterize p.q.-Baer $*$-rings whose strong zero-divisor graph is complemented.

A universal cycle (u-cycle) for permutations of length $n$ is a cyclic word, any size $n$ window of which is order-isomorphic to exactly one permutation of length $n$, and all permutations of length $n$ are covered. It is known that u-cycles for permutations exist, and they have been considered in the literature in several papers from different points of view.
In this paper, we show how to construct a family of u-cycles for multi-dimensional permutations, which is based on applying an appropriate greedy algorithm. Our construction is a generalisation of the greedy way by Gao et al. to construct u-cycles for permutations. We also note the existence of u-cycles for $d$-dimensional matrices.

We prove that every $n$-vertex directed graph $G$ with the minimum outdegree $δ^+(G) = d$ contains a subgraph $H$ satisfying \[ \min\left\{δ^+(H), δ^-(H) \right\} \ge \frac{d(d+1)}{2n} \,.\] We also show that if $d = o(n)$ then this bound is asymptotically best possible.
