A Random Graph Growth Model
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society 56, Issue 2 (2024) pp. 662-680 • View PublicationBIB
A growing random graph is constructed by successively sampling without replacement an element from the pool of virtual vertices and edges. At start of the process the pool contains $N$ virtual vertices and no edges. Each time a vertex is sampled and occupied, the edges linking the vertex to previously occupied vertices are added to the pool of virtual elements. We focus on the edge-counting at times when the graph has $n\leq N$ occupied vertices. Two different Poisson limits are identified for $n\asymp N^{1/3}$ and $N-n\asymp 1$. For the bulk of the process, when $n\asymp N$, the scaled number of edges is shown to fluctuate about a deterministic curve, with fluctuations being of the order of $N^{3/2}$ and approximable by a Gaussian bridge.

Spherically Symmetric Random Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random permutations which are spherically symmetric with respect to a metric on the symmetric group $S_n$ and are consistent as $n$ varies. The extreme infinitely spherically symmetric permutation-valued processes are identified for the Hamming, Kendall-tau and Caley metrics. The proofs in all three cases are based on a unified approach through stochastic monotonicity.

Record-dependent measures on the symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A probability measure $P_n$ on the symmetric group ${\mathfrak S}_n$ is said to be record-dependent if $P_n(σ)$ depends only on the set of records of a permutation $σ\in{\mathfrak S}_n$. A sequence $P=(P_n)_{n\in{\mathbb N}}$ of consistent record-dependent measures determines a random order on $\mathbb N$. In this paper we describe the extreme elements of the convex set of such $P$. This problem turns out to be related to the study of asymptotic behavior of permutation-valued growth processes, to random extensions of partial orders, and to the measures on the Young-Fibonacci lattice.

Block characters of the symmetric groups
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 38, no. 1 (2013), 79-101 • View PublicationBIB
Block character of a finite symmetric group S(n) is a positive definite function which depends only on the number of cycles in permutation. We describe the cone of block characters by identifying its extreme rays, and find relations of the characters to descent representations and the coinvariant algebra of S(n). The decomposition of extreme block characters into the sum of characters of irreducible representations gives rise to certain limit shape theorems for random Young diagrams. We also study counterparts of the block characters for the infinite symmetric group S(\infty) along with their connection to the Thoma characters of the infinite linear group GL(\infty,q) over a Galois field.
A generalization of the Erdős-Turán law for the order of random permutation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random permutations derived by sampling from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The cycle structure of such a permutation can be associated with the path of a decreasing Markov chain on $n$ integers. Under certain assumptions on the stick-breaking factor we prove a central limit theorem for the logarithm of the order of the permutation, thus extending the classical Erdős-Turán law for the uniform permutations and its generalization for Ewens' permutations associated with sampling from the PD/GEM$(θ)$ distribution. Our approach is based on using perturbed random walks to obtain the limit laws for the sum of logarithms of the cycle lengths.

The two-sided infinite extension of the Mallows model for random permutations
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 48 (2012), no. 5, 615-639 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a probability distribution Q on the group of permutations of the set Z of integers. Distribution Q is a natural extension of the Mallows distribution on the finite symmetric group. A one-sided infinite counterpart of Q, supported by the group of permutations of the set N of natural numbers, was studied previously in our paper [Gnedin and Olshanski, Ann. Prob. 38 (2010), 2103-2135; arXiv:0907.3275]. We analyze various features of Q such as its symmetries, the support, and the marginal distributions.

$q$-exchangeability via quasi-invariance
Published in Annals of Probability 2010, Vol. 38, No. 6, 2103-2135 • View PublicationBIB
For positive $q\neq1$, the $q$-exchangeability of an infinite random word is introduced as quasi-invariance under permutations of letters, with a special cocycle which accounts for inversions in the word. This framework allows us to extend the $q$-analog of de Finetti's theorem for binary sequences---see Gnedin and Olshanski [Electron. J. Combin. 16 (2009) R78]---to general real-valued sequences. In contrast to the classical case of exchangeability ($q=1$), the order on $\mathbb{R}$ plays a significant role for the $q$-analogs. An explicit construction of ergodic $q$-exchangeable measures involves random shuffling of $\mathbb{N}=\{1,2,...\}$ by iteration of the geometric choice. Connections are established with transient Markov chains on $q$-Pascal pyramids and invariant random flags over the Galois fields.

A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 16 (2009), no. 1, paper #R78 • View PublicationBIB
A q-analogue of de Finetti's theorem is obtained in terms of a boundary problem for the q-Pascal graph. For q a power of prime this leads to a characterisation of random spaces over the Galois field F_q that are invariant under the natural action of the infinite group of invertible matrices with coefficients from F_q.

Coherent random permutations with record statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random permutations with distribution conditionally uniform given the set of record values can be generated in a unified way, coherently for all values of $n$. Our central example is a two-parameter family of random permutations that are conditionally uniform given the counts of upper and lower records. This family interpolates between two versions of Ewens' distribution. We discuss characterisations of the conditionally uniform permutations, their asymptotic properties, constructions and relations to random partitions.

Poisson representation of a Ewens fragmentation process
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple explicit construction is provided of a partition-valued fragmentation process whose distribution on partitions of $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$ at time $θ\ge 0$ is governed by the Ewens sampling formula with parameter $θ$. These partition-valued processes are exchangeable and consistent, as $n$ varies. They can be derived by uniform sampling from a corresponding mass fragmentation process defined by cutting a unit interval at the points of a Poisson process with intensity $θx^{-1} \diff x$ on ${\mathbb R}_+$, arranged to be intensifying as $θ$ increases.

The boundary of the Eulerian number triangle
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal 6 (2006), no 3, 461-475 • View PublicationBIB
The Eulerian triangle is a classical array of combinatorial numbers defined by a linear recursion. The associated boundary problem asks one to find all extreme nonnegative solutions to a dual recursion. Exploiting connections with random permutations and Markov chains we show that the boundary is discrete and explicitly identify its elements.

Coherent permutations with descent statistic and the boundary problem for the graph of zigzag diagrams
Published in Intern. Math. Research Notices 2006, Art. ID 51968, 39 pp. • View PublicationBIB
The graph of zigzag diagrams is a close relative of Young's lattice. The boundary problem for this graph amounts to describing coherent random permutations with descent-set statistic, and is also related to certain positive characters on the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. We establish connections to some further relatives of Young's lattice and solve the boundary problem by reducing it to the classification of spreadable total orders on integers, as recently obtained by Jacka and Warren.

Exchangeable Gibbs partitions and Stirling triangles
Published • View PublicationBIB
For two collections of nonnegative and suitably normalised weights $\W=(\W_j)$ and $\V=(\V_{n,k})$, a probability distribution on the set of partitions of the set $\{1,...,n\}$ is defined by assigning to a generic partition $\{A_j, j\leq k\}$ the probability $\V_{n,k} \W_{|A_1|}... \W_{|A_k|}$, where $|A_j|$ is the number of elements of $A_j$. We impose constraints on the weights by assuming that the resulting random partitions $Π_n$ of $[n]$ are consistent as $n$ varies, meaning that they define an exchangeable partition of the set of all natural numbers. This implies that the weights $\W$ must be of a very special form depending on a single parameter $α\in [-\infty,1]$. The case $α=1$ is trivial, and for each value of $α\neq 1$ the set of possible $\V$-weights is an infinite-dimensional simplex. We identify the extreme points of the simplex by solving the boundary problem for a generalised Stirling triangle. In particular, we show that the boundary is discrete for $-\infty\leqα<0$ and continuous for $0\leqα<1$. For $α\leq 0$ the extremes correspond to the members of the Ewens-Pitman family of random partitions indexed by $(α,θ)$, while for $0<α<1$ the extremes are obtained by conditioning an $(α,θ)$-partition on the asymptotics of the number of blocks of $Π_n$ as $n$ tends to infinity.

Regenerative partition structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider Kingman's partition structures which are regenerative with respect to a general operation of random deletion of some part. Prototypes of this class are the Ewens partition structures which Kingman characterised by regeneration after deletion of a part chosen by size-biased sampling. We associate each regenerative partition structure with a corresponding regenerative composition structure, which (as we showed in a previous paper) can be associated in turn with a regenerative random subset of the positive halfline, that is the closed range of a subordinator. A general regenerative partition structure is thus represented in terms of the Laplace exponent of an associated subordinator. We also analyse deletion properties characteristic of the two-parameter family of partition structures.

Derangement characters of the full general linear group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We focus on derangement characters of $GL(n,q)$ which depend solely on the dimension of the space of fixed vectors. This family includes Thoma characters which become asymptotically irreducible as $n\to\infty$. We find explicit decomposition of Thoma characters into irreducibles, construct further derangement characters and seek for extremes in the family of derangement characters.

Regenerative Composition Structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new class of random composition structures (the ordered analog of Kingman's partition structures) is defined by a regenerative description of component sizes. Each regenerative composition structure is represented by a process of random sampling of points from an exponential distribution on the positive halfline, and separating the points into clusters by an independent regenerative random set. Examples are composition structures derived from residual allocation models, including one associated with the Ewens sampling formula, and composition structures derived from the zero set of a Brownian motion or Bessel process. We provide characterisation results and formulas relating the distribution of the regenerative composition to the L{é}vy parameters of a subordinator whose range is the corresponding regenerative set. In particular, the only reversible regenerative composition structures are those associated with the interval partition of $[0,1]$ generated by excursions of a standard Bessel bridge of dimension $2 - 2 α$ for some $α\in [0,1]$.
