The components of the singular locus of a component of a Springer fiber over x^2 = 0
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $x\in End(K^n)$ satisfying $x^2 = 0$ let $F_x$ be the variety of full flags stable under the action of $x$ (Springer fiber over $x$). The full classification of the components of $F_x$ according to their smoothness was provided in a paper of Fresse-Melnikov in terms of both Young tableaux and link patterns. Moreover in a paper of Fresse the purely combinatorial algorithm to compute the singular locus of a singular components of $F_x$ is provided. However this algorithm involves the computation of the graph of the component, and the complexity of computations grows very quickly, so that in practice it is impossible to use it. In this paper, we construct another algorithm, derived from the algorithm of Fresse, providing all the components of the singular locus of a singular component of $F_x$ in terms of link patterns constructed straightforwardly from its link pattern.

Some characterizations of singular components of Springer fibers in the two-column case

Let $u$ be a nilpotent endomorphism of a finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-vector space. The set ${\mathcal F}_u$ of $u$-stable complete flags is a projective algebraic variety called a Springer fiber. Its irreducible components are parameterized by a set of standard tableaux. We provide three characterizations of the singular components of ${\mathcal F}_u$ in the case $u^2=0$. First, we give the combinatorial description of standard tableaux corresponding to singular components. Second, we prove that a component is singular if and only if its Poincaré polynomial is not palindromic. Third, we show that a component is singular when it has too many intersections of codimension one with other components. Finally, relying on the second criterion, we infer that, for $u$ general, whenever ${\mathcal F}_u$ has a singular component, it admits a component whose Poincaré polynomial is not palindromic. This work relies on a previous criterion of singularity for components of ${\mathcal F}_u$ in the case $u^2=0$ by the first author and on the description of the $B$-orbit decomposition of orbital varieties of nilpotent order two by the second author.

B-orbits of nilpotent order 2 and link patterns

In this paper we describe geometry of orbits of upper triangular matrices of nilpotent order 2 under conjugation by the group of upper triangular invertible matrices in terms of link patterns. Further we apply this description to the computations of the closures of orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 and intersections of components of a Springer fiber of nilpotent order 2. In particular we connect our results to the combinatorics of meanders and Temperley-Lieb algebras.

Reducibility of the intersections of components of a Springer fiber
Published • View PublicationBIB
The description of the intersections of components of a Springer fiber is a very complex problem. Up to now only two cases have been described completely. The complete picture for the hook case has been obtained by N. Spaltenstein and J.A. Vargas, and for two-row case by F.Y.C. Fung. They have shown in particular that the intersection of a pair of components of a Springer fiber is either irreducible or empty. In both cases all the components are non-singular and the irreducibility of the intersections is strongly related to the non-singularity. As it has been shown in [8] a bijection between orbital varieties and components of the corresponding Springer fiber in GL_n extends to a bijection between the irreducible components of the intersections of orbital varieties and the irreducible components of the intersections of components of Springer fiber preserving their codimensions. Here we use this bijection to compute the intersections of the irreducible components of Springer fibers for two-column case. In this case the components are in general singular. As we show the intersection of two components is non-empty. The main result of the paper is a necessary and sufficient condition for the intersection of two components of the Springer fiber to be irreducible in two-column case. The condition is purely combinatorial. As an application of this characterization, we give first examples of pairs of componentswith a reducible intersection having components of different dimensions.

On Orbital variety closures in sl_n. III Geometric properties

This is the third paper in the series. Here we define a few combinatorial orders on Young tableaux. The first order is obtained from induced Duflo order by the extension with the help of Vogan T_{α, β} procedure. We call it Duflo-Vogan order. The second order is obtained from the generalization of Spaltenstein's construction by consideration of an orbital variety as a double chain of nilpotent orbits. We call it the chain order. Again, we use Vogan's T_{α, β} procedure, however, this time to restrict the chain order. We call it Vogan-chain order. The order on Young tableaux defined by the inclusion of orbital variety closures is called a geometric order and the order on Young tableaux defined by inverse inclusion of primitive ideals is called an algebraic order. We get the following relations between the orders: Duflo-Vogan order is an extension of the induced Duflo order; the algebraic order is an extension of Duflo-Vogan order; the geometric order is an extension of the algebraic order; Vogan-chain order is an extension of the geometric order; and, finally, the chain order is an extension of Vogan-chain order. The computationsshow that Duflo-Vogan and Vogan-chain orders coincide on sl_n for n<10 and in n=10 there is one case (up to T_{α,β} procedure and transposition) where Vogan-chain order is a proper extension of Duflo-Vogan order. In this only case the algebraic order coincides with Vogan-chain order. These computations permit us to conjecture that in sl_n the algebraic order coincides with the geometric order. As well we conjecture that the combinatorics of both the inclusions on primitive ideals and on orbital variety closures is defined by Vogan-chain order on Young tableaux.

The combinatorics of orbital varieties closures of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n)

We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).

On orbital variety closures in sl(n). I. Induced Duflo order
Published in Journal of Algebra, 271, 2004, pp. 179-233 • View PublicationBIB
For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. Inclusion relation on orbital variety closures defines a partial order on Young tableaux. Our aim is to describe this order. The paper is devoted to the combinatorial description of induced Duflo order on Young tableaux (the order generated by inclusion of generating subspaces of orbital varieties). This is a very interesting and complex combinatorial question. This is the first paper in the series. In Part II and Part III we use repeatedly the results of the paper as a basis for further study of orbital variety closures.

On orbital variety closures in sl(n). II. Descendants of a Richardson orbital variety

In this paper we consider so called Richardson orbital varieties in sl(n). A Richardson orbital variety is an orbital variety whose closure is a standard nilradical. We show that in sl(n) a Richardson orbital variety closure is a union of orbital varieties. We give a complete combinatorial description of such closures in terms of Young tableaux. This is the second paper in the series of three papers devoted to a combinatorial description of orbital variety closures in sl(n) in terms of Young tableaux.
