Twists of Plücker coordinates as dimer partition functions

The homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,n) has a cluster structure defined in terms of planar diagrams known as Postnikov diagrams. The cluster corresponding to such a diagram consists entirely of Pluecker coordinates. We introduce a twist map on Gr(k,n), related to the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky-twist, and give an explicit Laurent expansion for the twist of an arbitrary Pluecker coordinate in terms of the cluster variables associated with a fixed Postnikov diagram. The expansion arises as a (scaled) dimer partition function of a weighted version of the bipartite graph dual to the Postnikov diagram, modified by a boundary condition determined by the Pluecker coordinate. We also relate the twist map to a maximal green sequence.

We give a presentation of a finite crystallographic reflection group in terms of an arbitrary seed in the corresponding cluster algebra of finite type and interpret the presentation in terms of companion bases in the associated root system.

We study a circular order on labelled, m-edge-coloured trees with k vertices, and show that the set of such trees with a fixed circular order is in bijection with the set of RNA m-diagrams of degree k, combinatorial objects which can be regarded as RNA secondary structures of a certain kind. We enumerate these sets and show that the set of trees with a fixed circular order can be characterized as an equivalence class for the transitive closure of an operation which, in the case m=3, arises as an induction in the context of interval exchange transformations.

Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have computed the determinant of a matrix associated to a Conway-Coxeter frieze pattern. We generalise their result to the corresponding frieze pattern of cluster variables arising from the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra of type A. We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of this result in terms of certain configurations of indecomposable objects in the root category of type A.

There is a natural bijection between Dyck paths and basis diagrams of the Temperley-Lieb algebra defined via tiling. Overhang paths are certain generalisations of Dyck paths allowing more general steps but restricted to a rectangle in the two-dimensional integer lattice. We show that there is a natural bijection, extending the above tiling construction, between overhang paths and basis diagrams of the Brauer algebra.

We consider quivers/skew-symmetric matrices under the action of mutation (in the cluster algebra sense). We classify those which are isomorphic to their own mutation via a cycle permuting all the vertices, and give families of quivers which have higher periodicity. The periodicity means that sequences given by recurrence relations arise in a natural way from the associated cluster algebras. We present a number of interesting new families of non-linear recurrences, necessarily with the Laurent property, of both the real line and the plane, containing integrable maps as special cases. In particular, we show that some of these recurrences can be linearised and, with certain initial conditions, give integer sequences which contain all solutions of some particular Pell equations. We extend our construction to include recurrences with parameters, giving an explanation of some observations made by Gale. Finally, we point out a connection between quivers which arise in our classification and those arising in the context of quiver gauge theories.

We construct frieze patterns of type D_N with entries which are numbers of matchings between vertices and triangles of corresponding triangulations of a punctured disc. For triangulations corresponding to orientations of the Dynkin diagram of type D_N, we show that the numbers in the pattern can be interpreted as specialisations of cluster variables in the corresponding Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra.
Pascal arrays: counting Catalan sets
Motivated by representation theory we exhibit an interior structure to Catalan sequences and many generalisations thereof. Certain of these coincide with well known (but heretofore isolated) structures. The remainder are new.

Let U be the quantum group associated to a Lie algebra g of rank n. The negative part U^- of U has a canonical basis B with favourable properties, introduced by Kashiwara and Lusztig. The approaches of Kashiwara and Lusztig lead to a set of alternative parametrizations of the canonical basis, one for each reduced expression for the longest word in the Weyl group of g. We describe the authors' recent work establishing close relationships between the Lusztig cones, canonical basis elements and the regions of linearity of reparametrization functions arising from the above parametrizations in type A_4 and give some speculations for type A_n.

Let U_q be the quantum group associated to a Lie algebra g of rank n. We show that if g is of type A_4 there are close relationships between the Lusztig cones, canonical basis elements and the regions of linearity of reparametrization functions arising from the above parametrizations. A graph can be defined on the set of simplicial regions of linearity with respect to adjacency, and we further show that this graph is isomorphic to the graph with vertices given by the reduced expressions of the longest word of the Weyl group modulo commutation and edges given by long braid relations.

Let U be the quantum group associated to a Lie algebra of type A_n. The negative part U^- of U has a canonical basis B defined by Lusztig and Kashiwara, with favourable properties. We show how the spanning vectors of the cones defined by Lusztig when regarded as monomials in Kashiwara's root operators, can be described using a remarkable rectangle combinatorics. We use this to calculate the Lusztig parameters of the corresponding canonical basis elements, conjecturing that translates of these vectors span the simplicial regions of linearity of Lusztig's piecewise-linear function.

We show that for each reduced expression for the longest word in the Weyl group of type A_n, the corresponding cone arising in Lusztig's description of the canonical basis in terms of tight monomials is simplicial, and construct explicit spanning vectors.
