QGLBT for polytopes
We extend the assertion of the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem (GLBT) to general polytopes under the assumption that their low dimensional skeleton is simplicial, with partial results for the general case. We prove a quantitative version of the GLBT for general polytopes, and use it to give a topological necessary condition for polytopes to have vanishing toric $g_k$ entry. As another application of the QGLBT we prove a conjecture of Kalai on $g$-numbers for general polytopes approximating a smooth convex body.

Lefschetz and Lower Bound theorems for Minkowski sums
This note provides a Lefschetz theorem for Minkowski sums of polytopes, and conclude lower bound theorems for Minkowski sums of polytopes. It is written as an appendix to arXiv:1405.7368, so notation and references follow that paper.

A Cheeger-type exponential bound for the number of triangulated manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
In terms of the number of triangles, it is known that there are more than exponentially many triangulations of surfaces, but only exponentially many triangulations of surfaces with bounded genus. In this paper we provide a first geometric extension of this result to higher dimensions. We show that in terms of the number of facets, there are only exponentially many geometric triangulations of space forms with bounded geometry in the sense of Cheeger (curvature and volume bounded below, and diameter bounded above). This establishes a combinatorial version of Cheeger's finiteness theorem. Further consequences of our work are: (1) There are exponentially many geometric triangulations of $S^d$. (2) There are exponentially many convex triangulations of the d-ball.

Barycentric subdivisions of convex complexes are collapsible
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical question in PL topology, asked among others by Hudson, Lickorish, and Kirby, is whether every linear subdivision of the d-simplex is simplicially collapsible. The answer is known to be positive for d<4. We solve the problem up to one subdivision, by proving that any linear subdivision of any polytope is simplicially collapsible after at most one barycentric subdivision. Furthermore, we prove that any linear subdivision of any star-shaped polyhedron in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is simplicially collapsible after d-2 derived subdivisions at most. This presents progress on an old question by Goodrick.
Colorful simplicial depth, Minkowski sums, and generalized Gale transforms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The colorful simplicial depth of a collection of d+1 finite sets of points in Euclidean d-space is the number of choices of a point from each set such that the origin is contained in their convex hull. We use methods from combinatorial topology to prove a tight upper bound on the colorful simplicial depth. This implies a conjecture of Deza et al. (2006). Furthermore, we introduce colorful Gale transforms as a bridge between colorful configurations and Minkowski sums. Our colorful upper bound then yields a tight upper bound on the number of totally mixed facets of certain Minkowski sums of simplices. This resolves a conjecture of Burton (2003) in the theory of normal surfaces.

On Betti numbers of flag complexes with forbidden induced subgraphs
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 168 (2020) 567-600 • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the asymptotic extremal growth rate of the Betti numbers of clique complexes of graphs on n vertices not containing a fixed forbidden induced subgraph H. In particular, we prove a theorem of the alternative: for any H the growth rate achieves exactly one of five possible exponentials, that is, independent of the field of coefficients, the nth root of the maximal total Betti number over n-vertex graphs with no induced copy of H has a limit, as n tends to infinity, and, ranging over all H, exactly five different limits are attained. For the interesting case where H is the 4-cycle, the above limit is 1, and we prove a slightly superpolynomial upper bound.

Hodge Theory for Combinatorial Geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations for a commutative ring associated to an arbitrary matroid M. We use the Hodge-Riemann relations to resolve a conjecture of Heron, Rota, and Welsh that postulates the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of M. We furthermore conclude that the f-vector of the independence complex of a matroid forms a log-concave sequence, proving a conjecture of Mason and Welsh for general matroids.
A Geometric Lower Bound Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We resolve a conjecture of Kalai relating approximation theory of convex bodies by simplicial polytopes to the face numbers and primitive Betti numbers of these polytopes and their toric varieties. The proof uses higher notions of chordality. Further, for C^2-convex bodies, asymptotically tight lower bounds on the g-numbers of the approximating polytopes are given, in terms of their Hausdorff distance from the convex body.

Toric chordality
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometric change of Chow cohomology classes in projective toric varieties under the Weil-McMullen dual of the intersection product with a Lefschetz element. Based on this, we introduce toric chordality, a generalization of graph chordality to higher skeleta of simplicial complexes with a coordinatization over characteristic 0, leading us to a far-reaching generalization of Kalai's work on applications of rigidity of frameworks to polytope theory. In contrast to "homological" chordality, the notion that is usually studied as a higher-dimensional analogue of graph chordality, we will show that toric chordality has several advantageous properties and applications. -- Most strikingly, we will see that toric chordality allows us to introduce a higher version of Dirac's propagation principle. -- Aside from the propagation theorem, we also study the interplay with the geometric properties of the simplicial chain complex of the underlying simplicial complex, culminating in a quantified version of the Stanley--Murai--Nevo generalized lower bound theorem. -- Finally, we apply our technique to give a simple proof of the generalized lower bound theorem in polytope theory and -- prove the balanced generalized lower bound conjecture of Klee and Novik.

Relative Stanley-Reisner theory and Upper Bound Theorems for Minkowski sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

An Alexander-type duality for valuations
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 143 (2015), 833-843 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an Alexander-type duality for valuations for certain subcomplexes in the boundary of polyhedra. These strengthen and simplify results of Stanley (1974) and Miller-Reiner (2005). We give a generalization of Brion's theorem for this relative situation and we discuss the topology of the possible subcomplexes for which the duality relation holds.

Tight complexes in 3-space admit perfect discrete Morse functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1967, Chillingworth proved that all convex simplicial 3-balls are collapsible. Using the classical notion of tightness, we generalize this to arbitrary manifolds: We show that all tight simplicial 3-manifolds admit some perfect discrete Morse function. We also strengthen Chillingworth's theorem by proving that all convex simplicial 3-balls are non-evasive. In contrast, we show that many non-evasive 3-balls are not convex.

Collapsibility of CAT(0) spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Collapsibility is a combinatorial strengthening of contractibility. We relate this property to metric geometry by proving the collapsibility of any complex that is CAT(0) with a metric for which all vertex stars are convex. This strengthens and generalizes a result by Crowley. Further consequences of our work are: (1) All CAT(0) cube complexes are collapsible. (2) Any triangulated manifold admits a CAT(0) metric if and only if it admits collapsible triangulations. (3) All contractible d-manifolds ($d \ne 4$) admit collapsible CAT(0) triangulations. This discretizes a classical result by Ancel--Guilbault.

Characterization of polytopes via tilings with similar pieces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing results by Valette, Zamfirescu and Laczkovich, we will prove that a convex body $K$ is a polytope if there are sufficiently many tilings which contain a tile similar to $K$. Furthermore, we give an example that this can not be improved.
