We confirm Sun's conjecture that $(\root{n+1}\of{F_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{F_n})_{n\ge 4}$ is strictly decreasing to the limit 1, where $(F_n)_{n\ge0}$ is the Fibonacci sequence. We also prove that the sequence $(\root{n+1}\of{D_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{D_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly decreasing with limit $1$, where $D_n$ is the $n$-th derangement number. For $m$-th order harmonic numbers $H_n^{(m)}=\sum_{k=1}^n 1/k^m\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$, we show that $(\root{n+1}\of{H^{(m)}_{n+1}}/\root{n}\of{H^{(m)}_n})_{n\ge3}$ is strictly increasing.

Let $p_r(n)$ denote the number of $r$-component multipartitions of $n$, and let $S_{γ,λ}$ be the space spanned by $η(24z)^γφ(24z)$, where $η(z)$ is the Dedekind's eta function and $φ(z)$ is a holomorphic modular form in $M_λ({\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}))$. In this paper, we show that the generating function of $p_r(\frac{m^k n +r}{24})$ with respect to $n$ is congruent to a function in the space $S_{γ,λ}$ modulo $m^k$. As special cases, this relation leads to many well known congruences including the Ramanujan congruences of $p(n)$ modulo $5,7,11$ and Gandhi's congruences of $p_2(n)$ modulo 5 and $p_{8}(n)$ modulo 11. Furthermore, using the invariance property of $S_{γ,λ}$ under the Hecke operator $T_{\ell^2}$, we obtain two classes of congruences pertaining to the $m^k$-adic property of $p_r(n)$.

We present a method of computing the generating function $f_P(\x)$ of $P$-partitions of a poset $P$. The idea is to introduce two kinds of transformations on posets and compute $f_P(\x)$ by recursively applying these transformations. As an application, we consider the partially ordinal sum $P_n$ of $n$ copies of a given poset, which generalizes both the direct sum and the ordinal sum. We show that the sequence $\{f_{P_n}(\x)\}_{n\ge 1}$ satisfies a finite system of recurrence relations with respect to $n$. We illustrate the method by several examples, including a kind of 3-rowed posets and the multi-cube posets.
Formal residue and computer proofs of combinatorial identities
The coefficient of x^{-1} of a formal Laurent series f(x) is called the formal residue of f(x). Many combinatorial numbers can be represented by the formal residues of hypergeometric terms. With these representations and the extended Zeilberger's algorithm, we generate recurrence relations for summations involving combinatorial sequences such as Stirling numbers. As examples, we give computer proofs of several known identities and derive some new identities. The applicability of this method is also studied.

We use both Abel's lemma on summation by parts and Zeilberger's algorithm to find recurrence relations for definite summations. The role of Abel's lemma can be extended to the case of linear difference operators with polynomial coefficients. This approach can be used to verify and discover identities involving harmonic numbers and derangement numbers. As examples, we use the Abel-Zeilberger algorithm to prove the Paule-Schneider identities, the Apery-Schmidt-Strehl identity, Calkin's identity and some identities involving Fibonacci numbers.
An Iterated Map for the Lebesgue Identity
We present a simple iteration for the Lebesgue identity on partitions, which leads to a refinement involving the alternating sums of partitions.

We present a method for proving q-series identities by combinatorial telescoping, in the sense that one can transform a bijection or a classification of combinatorial objects into a telescoping relation. We shall illustrate this method by giving a combinatorial proof of Watson's identity which implies the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

For a hypergeometric series $\sum_k f(k,a, b, ...,c)$ with parameters $a, b, >...,c$, Paule has found a variation of Zeilberger's algorithm to establish recurrence relations involving shifts on the parameters. We consider a more general problem concerning several similar hypergeometric terms $f_1(k, a, b,..., c)$, $f_2(k, a,b, ..., c)$, $...$, $f_m(k, a, b, ..., c)$. We present an algorithm to derive a linear relation among the sums $\sum_k f_i(k,a,b,...,c)$ $(1\leq i \leq m)$. Furthermore, when the summand $f_i$ contains the parameter $x$, we can require that the coefficients be $x$-free. Such relations with $x$-free coefficients can be used to determine whether a polynomial sequence satisfies the three term recurrence and structure relations for orthogonal polynomials. The $q$-analogue of this approach is called the extended $q$-Zeilberger's algorithm, which can be employed to derive recurrence relations on the Askey-Wilson polynomials and the $q$-Racah polynomials.

We count the number of walks of length n on a k-node circular digraph that cover all k nodes in two ways. The first way illustrates the transfer-matrix method. The second involves counting various classes of height-restricted lattice paths. We observe that the results also count so-called k-balanced strings of length n, generalizing a 1996 Putnam problem.
Partial transpose of permutation matrices
The partial transpose of a block matrix M is the matrix obtained by transposing the blocks of M independently. We approach the notion of partial transpose from a combinatorial point of view. In this perspective, we solve some basic enumeration problems concerning the partial transpose of permutation matrices. More specifically, we count the number of permutations matrices which are equal to their partial transpose and the number of permutation matrices whose partial transpose is still a permutation. We solve these problems also when restricted to symmetric permutation matrices only.

We present a systematic method for proving nonterminating basic hypergeometric identities. Assume that $k$ is the summation index. By setting a parameter $x$ to $xq^n$, we may find a recurrence relation of the summation by using the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm. This method applies to almost all nonterminating basic hypergeometric summation formulas in the book of Gasper and Rahman. Furthermore, by comparing the recursions and the limit values, we may verify many classical transformation formulas, including the Sears-Carlitz transformation, transformations of the very-well-poised $_8φ_7$ series, the Rogers-Fine identity, and the limiting case of Watson's formula that implies the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
A Telescoping method for Double Summations

We present a method to prove hypergeometric double summation identities. Given a hypergeometric term $F(n,i,j)$, we aim to find a difference operator $ L=a_0(n) N^0 + a_1(n) N^1 +...+a_r(n) N^r $ and rational functions $R_1(n,i,j),R_2(n,i,j)$ such that $ L F = Δ_i (R_1 F) + Δ_j (R_2 F)$. Based on simple divisibility considerations, we show that the denominators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ must possess certain factors which can be computed from $F(n, i,j)$. Using these factors as estimates, we may find the numerators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ by guessing the upper bounds of the degrees and solving systems of linear equations. Our method is valid for the Andrews-Paule identity, Carlitz's identities, the Apéry-Schmidt-Strehl identity, the Graham-Knuth-Patashnik identity, and the Petkovšek-Wilf-Zeilberger identity.
Applicability of the $q$-Analogue of Zeilberger's Algorithm
The applicability or terminating condition for the ordinary case of Zeilberger's algorithm was recently obtained by Abramov. For the $q$-analogue, the question of whether a bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term has a $qZ$-pair remains open. Le has found a solution to this problem when the given bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term is a rational function in certain powers of $q$. We solve the problem for the general case by giving a characterization of bivariate $q$-hypergeometric terms for which the $q$-analogue of Zeilberger's algorithm terminates. Moreover, we give an algorithm to determine whether a bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term has a $qZ$-pair.
