We prove that the two-colouring number of any planar graph is at most 8. This resolves a question of Kierstead et al. [SIAM J. Discrete Math.~23 (2009), 1548--1560]. The result is optimal.
First order limits of sparse graphs: Plane trees and path-width
Nesetril and Ossona de Mendez introduced the notion of first order convergence as an attempt to unify the notions of convergence for sparse and dense graphs. It is known that there exist first order convergent sequences of graphs with no limit modeling (an analytic representation of the limit). On the positive side, every first order convergent sequence of trees or graphs with no long path (graphs with bounded tree-depth) has a limit modeling. We strengthen these results by showing that every first order convergent sequence of plane trees (trees with embeddings in the plane) and every first order convergent sequence of graphs with bounded path-width has a limit modeling.
Nowhere-zero flows in signed series-parallel graphs

Bouchet conjectured in 1983 that each signed graph that admits a nowhere-zero flow has a nowhere-zero 6-flow. We prove that the conjecture is true for all signed series-parallel graphs. Unlike the unsigned case, the restriction to series-parallel graphs is nontrivial; in fact, the result is tight for infinitely many graphs.
Fractional covers and matchings in families of weighted $d$-intervals

A $d$-{\em interval} is a union of at most $d$ disjoint closed intervals on a fixed line. Tardos [Combinatorica 15 (1995), 123-134] and the second author [Disc. Comput. Geom. 18 (1997), 195-203] used topological tools to bound the transversal number $τ$ of a family $H$ of $d$-intervals in terms of $d$ and the matching number $ν$ of $H$. We investigate the weighted and fractional versions of this problem and prove upper bounds that are tight up to constant factors. We apply both the topological method and an approach of Alon [Disc. Comput. Geom. 19 (1998), 333-334]. For the use of the latter, we prove a weighted version of Turán's theorem. We also provide a proof of the second author's upper bound that is more direct than the original proof.

A graph embedded in a surface with all faces of size 4 is known as a quadrangulation. We extend the definition of quadrangulation to higher dimensions, and prove that any graph G which embeds as a quadrangulation in the real projective space P^n has chromatic number n+2 or higher, unless G is bipartite. For n=2 this was proved by Youngs [J. Graph Theory 21 (1996), 219-227]. The family of quadrangulations of projective spaces includes all complete graphs, all Mycielski graphs, and certain graphs homomorphic to Schrijver graphs. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the Lovasz-Kneser theorem.
Replication in critical graphs and the persistence of monomial ideals

Motivated by questions about square-free monomial ideals in polynomial rings, in 2010 Francisco et al. conjectured that for every positive integer k and every k-critical (i.e., critically k-chromatic) graph, there is a set of vertices whose replication produces a (k+1)-critical graph. (The replication of a set W of vertices of a graph is the operation that adds a copy of each vertex w in W, one at a time, and connects it to w and all its neighbours.)
We disprove the conjecture by providing an infinite family of counterexamples. Furthermore, the smallest member of the family answers a question of Herzog and Hibi concerning the depth functions of square-free monomial ideals in polynomial rings, and a related question on the persistence property of such ideals.

For any positive integer $s$, a $[2,2s]$-factor in a graph $G$ is a connected even factor with maximum degree at most $2s$. We prove that if every induced $S(K_{1, 2s+1})$ in a graph $G$ has at least 3 edges in a block of degree at most two, then $G^2$ has a $[2,2s]$-factor. This extends the results of Hendry and Vogler and of Abderrezzak et al.
The distance-t chromatic index of graphs

We consider two graph colouring problems in which edges at distance at most $t$ are given distinct colours, for some fixed positive integer $t$. We obtain two upper bounds for the distance-$t$ chromatic index, the least number of colours necessary for such a colouring. One is a bound of $(2-\eps)Δ^t$ for graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$, where $\eps$ is some absolute positive constant independent of $t$. The other is a bound of $O(Δ^t/\log Δ)$ (as $Δ\to\infty$) for graphs of maximum degree at most $Δ$ and girth at least $2t+1$. The first bound is an analogue of Molloy and Reed's bound on the strong chromatic index. The second bound is tight up to a constant multiplicative factor, as certified by a class of graphs of girth at least $g$, for every fixed $g \ge 3$, of arbitrarily large maximum degree $Δ$, with distance-$t$ chromatic index at least $Ω(Δ^t/\log Δ)$.
Multiple Petersen subdivisions in permutation graphs

A permutation graph is a cubic graph admitting a 1-factor M whose complement consists of two chordless cycles. Extending results of Ellingham and of Goldwasser and Zhang, we prove that if e is an edge of M such that every 4-cycle containing an edge of M contains e, then e is contained in a subdivision of the Petersen graph of a special type. In particular, if the graph is cyclically 5-edge-connected, then every edge of M is contained in such a subdivision. Our proof is based on a characterization of cographs in terms of twin vertices. We infer a linear lower bound on the number of Petersen subdivisions in a permutation graph with no 4-cycles, and give a construction showing that this lower bound is tight up to a constant factor.

Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 14/5. Improving on estimates of Hatami and Zhu and of Lu and Peng, we prove that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 32/11 (which is roughly 2.909).

The rainbow connection number of a graph G is the least number of colours in a (not necessarily proper) edge-colouring of G such that every two vertices are joined by a path which contains no colour twice. Improving a result of Caro et al., we prove that the rainbow connection number of every 2-connected graph with n vertices is at most the ceiling of n/2. The bound is optimal.

A conjecture of Carsten Thomassen states that every 4-connected line graph is hamiltonian. It is known that the conjecture is true for 7-connected line graphs. We improve this by showing that any 5-connected line graph of minimum degree at least 6 is hamiltonian. The result extends to claw-free graphs and to Hamilton-connectedness.

Reed conjectured that for every epsilon>0 and Delta there exists g such that the fractional total chromatic number of a graph with maximum degree Delta and girth at least g is at most Delta+1+epsilon. We prove the conjecture for Delta=3 and for even Delta>=4 in the following stronger form: For each of these values of Delta, there exists g such that the fractional total chromatic number of any graph with maximum degree Delta and girth at least g is equal to Delta+1.

The Shortest Cycle Cover Conjecture of Alon and Tarsi asserts that the edges of every bridgeless graph with $m$ edges can be covered by cycles of total length at most $7m/5=1.400m$. We show that every cubic bridgeless graph has a cycle cover of total length at most $34m/21\approx 1.619m$ and every bridgeless graph with minimum degree three has a cycle cover of total length at most $44m/27\approx 1.630m$.

We study the mixed Ramsey number maxR(n,K_m,K_r), defined as the maximum number of colours in an edge-colouring of the complete graph K_n, such that K_n has no monochromatic complete subgraph on m vertices and no rainbow complete subgraph on r vertices. Improving an upper bound of Axenovich and Iverson, we show that maxR(n,K_m,K_4) <= n^{3/2}\sqrt{2m} for all m >= 3. Further, we discuss a possible way to improve their lower bound on maxR(n,K_4,K_4) based on incidence graphs of finite projective planes.
