Given a finite simple graph one can associate the edge ideal. In this paper we prove that a graded Betti number of the edge ideal does not vanish if the original graph contains a set of complete bipartite subgraphs with some conditions. Also we give a combinatorial description for the projective dimension of the edge ideals of unmixed bipartite graphs.

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of genus $g\neq 4$, and assume that it is birationally equivalent to a curve defined by a Laurent polynomial that is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polygon $Δ$. Then we show that the convex hull $Δ^{(1)}$ of the interior lattice points of $Δ$ is a standard rectangle, up to a unimodular transformation. Our main auxiliary result, which we believe to be interesting in its own right, is that the first scrollar Betti numbers of $Δ$-non-degenerate curves are encoded in the combinatorics of $Δ^{(1)}$, if $Δ$ satisfies some mild conditions.

We call an ideal in a polynomial ring robust if it can be minimally generated by a universal Gröbner basis. In this paper we show that robust toric ideals generated by quadrics are essentially determinantal. We then discuss two possible generalizations to higher degree, providing a tight classification for determinantal ideals, and a counterexample to a natural extension for Lawrence ideals. We close with a discussion of robustness of higher Betti numbers.

The phylogenetic semigroup on a graph generalizes the Jukes-Cantor binary model on a tree. Minimal generating sets of phylogenetic semigroups have been described for trivalent trees by Buczyńska and Wiśniewski, and for trivalent graphs with first Betti number 1 by Buczyńska. We characterize degree two minimal generators of the phylogenetic semigroup on any trivalent graph. Moreover, for any graph with first Betti number 1 and for any trivalent graph with first Betti number 2 we describe the minimal generating set of its phylogenetic semigroup.

We consider path ideals associated to special classes of posets such as tree posets and cycles. We express their property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay in terms of the underlying poset. Moreover, monomial ideals, which arise from the Luce-decomposable model in algebraic statistics, can be viewed as path ideals of certain posets. We study invariants of these so-called \emph{Luce-decomposable} monomial ideals for diamond posets and products of chains. In particular, for these classes of posets, we explicitly compute their Krull dimension, their projective dimension, their regularity and their Betti numbers.
On Milgram's construction and the Duke embedding conjectures
Milgram constructed a 28-vertex cubic graph of genus 4 that disproved Duke's conjecture relating Betti number to minimum genus. We apply Milgram's method to construct to find graphs of higher genus violating Duke's conjecture, which gives a sharper bound on that relationship. These graphs are also counterexamples to a related conjecture of Nordhaus et al. on the relationship between minimum and maximum genera of graphs. As a side note, we give a simpler proof of correctness for Milgram's method and we show that Duke's conjecture is true for genus at most 3.

In a recent paper the first two authors proved that the generating series of the Poincare polynomials of the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes of points in the plane has a simple decomposition in an infinite product. In this paper we give a very short geometrical proof of that formula.

For a simplicial complex K on m vertices and simplicial complexes K1,...,Km a composed simplicial complex K(K1,...,Km) is introduced. This construction generalizes an iterated simplicial wedge construction studied by A. Bahri, M. Bendersky, F. R. Cohen and S. Gitler and allows to describe the combinatorics of generalized joins of polytopes P(P1,...,Pm) defined by G. Agnarsson. The composition defines a structure of an operad on a set of finite simplicial complexes. We prove the following: (1) a composed complex K(K1,...,Km) is a simplicial sphere iff K is a simplicial sphere and Ki are the boundaries of simplices; (2) a class of spherical nerve-complexes is closed under the operation of composition (3) finally, we express multigraded Betti numbers of K(K1,...,Km) in terms of multigraded Betti numbers of K, K1,...,Km using a composition of generating functions.

We prove sharper versions of theorems of Linial-Meshulam and Meshulam-Wallach which describe the behavior for (Z/2)-cohomology of a random k-dimensional simplicial complex within a narrow transition window. In particular, we show that within this window the (k-1)st Betti number is in the limit Poisson distributed. For k=2 we also prove that in an accompanying growth process, with high probability, first cohomology vanishes exactly at the moment when the last isolated (k-1)-simplex gets covered by a k-simplex.

Recently, Choi and Park introduced an invariant of a finite simple graph, called signed a-number, arising from computing certain topological invariants of some specific kinds of real toric manifolds. They also found the signed a-numbers of path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs.
We introduce a signed a-polynomial which is a generalization of the signed a-number and gives a-, b-, and c-numbers. The signed a-polynomial of a graph $G$ is related to the Poincaré polynomial $P_{M(G)}(z)$, which is the generating function for the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$. We give the generating functions for the signed a-polynomials of not only path graphs, cycle graphs, complete graphs, and star graphs, but also complete bipartite graphs and complete multipartite graphs. As a consequence, we find the Euler characteristic number and the Betti numbers of the real toric manifold $M(G)$ for complete multipartite graphs $G$.

The Laplacian matrix of a graph G describes the combinatorial dynamics of the Abelian Sandpile Model and the more general Riemann-Roch theory of G. The lattice ideal associated to the lattice generated by the columns of the Laplacian provides an algebraic perspective on this recently (re)emerging field. This ideal I_G has a distinguished monomial initial ideal M_G, characterized by the property that the standard monomials are in bijection with the G-parking functions of the graph G. The ideal M_G was also introduced by Postnikov and Shapiro (2004) in the context of monotone monomial ideals. We study resolutions of M_G and show that a minimal free cellular resolution is supported on the bounded subcomplex of a section of the graphical arrangement of G. This generalizes constructions from Postnikov and Shapiro (for the case of the complete graph) and connects to work of Manjunath and Sturmfels, and of Perkinson et al. on the commutative algebra of Sandpiles. As a corollary we verify a conjecture of Perkinson et al. regarding the Betti numbers of M_G, and in the process provide a combinatorial characterization in terms of acyclic orientations.

We give a bound for the Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a stellar subdivision of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex by applying unprojection theory. From this we derive a bound for the Betti numbers of iterated stellar subdivisions of the boundary complex of a simplex. The bound depends only on the number of subdivisions, and we construct examples which prove that it is sharp.
Minor theory for surfaces and divides of maximal signature
The paper is partially withdrawn: in its current form, Lemma 2.3 is false, so that our proof of Theorem A and Proposition B has an important gap. We were unable to fix it yet. Any help is most welcome. We prove that the restriction of surface minority to fiber surfaces of divides is a well-quasi-order. Here surface minority is the partial order on isotopy classes of surfaces embedded in the 3-space associated with incompressible subsurfaces. The proof relies on a refinement of the Robertson-Seymour Theorem that involves colored graphs embedded into the plane. Our result implies that every property of fiber surfaces of divides that is preserved by surface minority is characterized by a finite number of prohibited minors. For the signature to be equal to the first Betti number is such a property. We explicitly determine the corresponding prohibited minors. As an application we establish a correspondance between divide links of maximal signature and Dynkin diagrams.

We prove that the complement of any affine 2-arrangement in R^d is minimal, that is, it is homotopy equivalent to a cell complex with as many i-cells as its i-th rational Betti number. For the proof, we provide a Lefschetz-type hyperplane theorem for complements of 2-arrangements, and introduce Alexander duality for combinatorial Morse functions. Our results greatly generalize previous work by Falk, Dimca--Papadima, Hattori, Randell, and Salvetti--Settepanella and others, and they demonstrate that in contrast to previous investigations, a purely combinatorial approach suffices to show minimality and the Lefschetz Hyperplane Theorem for complements of complex hyperplane arrangements.

There has been considerable recent interest, primarily motivated by problems in applied algebraic topology, in the homology of random simplicial complexes. We consider the scenario in which the vertices of the simplices are the points of a random point process in $\mathbb {R}^d$, and the edges and faces are determined according to some deterministic rule, typically leading to Čech and Vietoris-Rips complexes. In particular, we obtain results about homology, as measured via the growth of Betti numbers, when the vertices are the points of a general stationary point process. This significantly extends earlier results in which the points were either i.i.d. observations or the points of a Poisson process. In dealing with general point processes, in which the points exhibit dependence such as attraction or repulsion, we find phenomena quantitatively different from those observed in the i.i.d. and Poisson cases. From the point of view of topological data analysis, our results seriously impact considerations of model (non)robustness for statistical inference. Our proofs rely on analysis of subgraph and component counts of stationary point processes, which are of independent interest in stochastic geometry.
Wilmes' Conjecture and Boundary Divisors
This paper is concerned with Wilmes' conjecture regarding abelian sandpile models. We introduce the concept of boundary divisors and use this to prove the conjecture for the first Betti number. Further results suggest that this method could be used to tackle the general case of the problem.

We study the binomial and monomial ideals arising from linear equivalence of divisors on graphs from the point of view of Gröbner theory. We give an explicit description of a minimal Gröbner bases for each higher syzygy module. In each case the given minimal Gröbner bases is also a minimal generating set. The Betti numbers of the binomial ideal and its natural initial ideal coincide and they correspond to the number of 'connected flags' in the graph. In particular the Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. For complete graphs the problem was previously studied by Postnikov and Shapiro and by Manjunath and Sturmfels. The case of a general graph was stated as an open problem.

In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.
Decision trees, monotone functions, and semimatroids
We define decision trees for monotone functions on a simplicial complex. We define homology decidability of monotone functions, and show that various monotone functions related to semimatroids are homology decidable. Homology decidability is a generalization of semi-nonevasiveness, a notion due to Jonsson. The motivating example is the complex of bipartite graphs, whose Betti numbers are unknown in general.
We show that these monotone functions have optimum decision trees, from which we can compute relative Betti numbers of related pairs of simplicial complexes. Moreover, these relative Betti numbers are coefficients of evaluations of the Tutte polynomial, and every semimatroid collapses onto its broken circuit complex.

Cut ideals, introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant, are used in phylogenetics and algebraic statistics. We study the minimal free resolutions of cut ideals of tree graphs. By employing basic methods from topological combinatorics, we obtain upper bounds for the Betti numbers of this type of ideals. These take the form of simple formulas on the number of vertices, which arise from the enumeration of induced subgraphs of certain incomparability graphs associated to the edge sets of trees.
