Betti numbers of skeletons
We demonstrate that the Betti numbers associated to an N-graded minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the (d-1)-skeleton of a simplicial complex of dimension d can be expressed as a Z-linear combination of the corresponding Betti numbers of the complex itself. An immediate implication of our main result is that the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the (d-1)-skeleton is at most one greater than the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the original complex, and it thus provides a new and direct proof of this. Our result extends immediately to matroids and their truncations. A similar result for matroid elongations can not be hoped for, but we do obtain a weaker result for these.
Face numbers of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay complexes and Betti numbers of componentwise linear ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A numerical characterization is given of the so-called h-triangles of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This result characterizes the number of faces of various dimensions and codimensions in such a complex, generalizing the classical Macaulay-Stanley theorem to the nonpure case. Moreover, we characterize the possible Betti tables of componentwise linear ideals. A key tool in our investigation is a bijection between shifted multicomplexes of degree at most d and shifted pure (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complexes.

Locally standard torus actions and h'-vectors of simplicial posets
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan 68:4 (2016), 1-21 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the orbit type filtration on a manifold $X$ with locally standard action of a compact torus and the corresponding homological spectral sequence $(E_X)^r_{*,*}$. If all proper faces of the orbit space $Q=X/T$ are acyclic, and the free part of the action is trivial, this spectral sequence can be described in full. The ranks of diagonal terms are equal to the $h'$-numbers of the Buchsbaum simplicial poset $S_Q$ dual to $Q$. Betti numbers of $X$ depend only on the orbit space $Q$ but not on the characteristic function. If $X$ is a slightly different object, namely the model space $X=(P\times T^n)/\sim$ where $P$ is a cone over Buchsbaum simplicial poset $S$, we prove that $\dim (E_X)^{\infty}_{p,p} = h''_p(S)$. This gives a topological evidence for the fact that $h''$-numbers of Buchsbaum simplicial posets are nonnegative.

Graph colouring and the total Betti number
The total Betti number of the independence complex of a graph is an intriguing graph invariant. Kalai and Meshulam have raised the question on its relation to cycles and the chromatic number of a graph, and a recent conjecture on that theme was proved by Bonamy, Charbit and Thomasse. We show an upper bound on the total Betti number in terms of the number of vertex disjoint cycles in a graph. The main technique is discrete Morse theory and building poset maps. Ramanujan graphs with arbitrary chromatic number and girth log(n) is a classical construction. We show that any subgraph of them with less than n^0.003 vertices have smaller total Betti number than some planar graph of the same order, although it is part of a graph with high chromatic number.

Combinatorics of Tableau Inversions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 22 (2015), no. 2, Paper 2.44 • View PublicationBIB
A tableau inversion is a pair of entries in row-standard tableau $T$ that lie in the same column of $T$ yet lack the appropriate relative ordering to make $T$ column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a precisely $i$ inversion pairs. Tableau inversions were originally introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, with the number of $i$-inverted tableaux that standardize to a fixed standard Young tableau corresponding to a specific Betti number of the associated fiber. In this paper we approach the topic of tableau inversions from a completely combinatorial perspective. We develop formulas enumerating the number of $i$-inverted Young tableaux for a variety of tableaux shapes, not restricting ourselves to inverted tableaux that standardize a specific standard Young tableau, and construct bijections between $i$-inverted Young tableaux of a certain shape with $j$-inverted Young tableaux of different shapes. Finally, we share some the results of a computer program developed to calculate tableaux inversions.

Tight triangulations of closed 3-manifolds
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 54, 103-120, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that a triangulation of a closed 2-manifold is tight with respect to a field of characteristic two if and only if it is neighbourly; and it is tight with respect to a field of odd characteristic if and only if it is neighbourly and orientable. No such characterization of tightness was previously known for higher dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we prove that a triangulation of a closed 3-manifold is tight with respect to a field of odd characteristic if and only if it is neighbourly, orientable and stacked. In consequence, the Kühnel-Lutz conjecture is valid in dimension three for fields of odd characteristic. Next let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field of characteristic two. It is known that, in this case, any neighbourly and stacked triangulation of a closed 3-manifold is $\mathbb{F}$-tight. For triangulated closed 3-manifolds with at most 71 vertices or with first Betti number at most 188, we show that the converse is true. But the possibility of an $\mathbb{F}$-tight non-stacked triangulation on a larger number of vertices remains open. We prove the following upper bound theorem on such triangulations. If an $\mathbb{F}$-tight triangulation of a closed 3-manifold has $n$ vertices and first Betti number $β_1$, then $(n-4)(617n- 3861) \leq 15444β_1$. Equality holds here if and only if all the vertex links of the triangulation are connected sums of boundary complexes of icosahedra.
Asymptotic syzygies of Stanley-Reisner rings of iterated subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).

Betti splitting via componentwise linear ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A monomial ideal $I$ admits a Betti splitting $I=J+K$ if the Betti numbers of $I$ can be determined in terms of the Betti numbers of the ideals $J,K$ and $J \cap K$. Given a monomial ideal $I$, we prove that $I=J+K$ is a Betti splitting of $I$, provided $J$ and $K$ are componentwise linear, generalizing a result of Francisco, Hà and Van Tuyl. If $I$ has a linear resolution, the converse also holds. We apply this result recursively to the Alexander dual of vertex-decomposable, shellable and constructible simplicial complexes and to determine the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of three general fat points in the projective space.

A combinatorial interpretation for Schreyer's tetragonal invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schreyer has proved that the graded Betti numbers of a canonical tetragonal curve are determined by two integers $b_1$ and $b_2$, associated to the curve through a certain geometric construction. In this article we prove that in the case of a smooth projective tetragonal curve on a toric surface, these integers have easy interpretations in terms of the Newton polygon of its defining Laurent polynomial. We can use this to prove an intrinsicness result on Newton polygons of small lattice width.

On the phase transition in random simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the $G(n,p)$ model of random graphs undergoes a dramatic change around $p=\frac 1n$. It is here that the random graph is, almost surely, no longer a forest, and here it first acquires a giant (i.e., order $Ω(n)$) connected component. Several years ago, Linial and Meshulam have introduced the $X_d(n,p)$ model, a probability space of $n$-vertex $d$-dimensional simplicial complexes, where $X_1(n,p)$ coincides with $G(n,p)$. Within this model we prove a natural $d$-dimensional analog of these graph theoretic phenomena. Specifically, we determine the exact threshold for the nonvanishing of the real $d$-th homology of complexes from $X_d(n,p)$. We also compute the real Betti numbers of $X_d(n,p)$ for $p=c/n$. Finally, we establish the emergence of giant shadow at this threshold. (For $d=1$ a giant shadow and a giant component are equivalent). Unlike the case for graphs, for $d\ge 2$ the emergence of the giant shadow is a first order phase transition.
Connectivity of pseudomanifold graphs from an algebraic point of view
Published • View PublicationBIB
The connectivity of graphs of simplicial and polytopal complexes is a classical subject going back at least to Steinitz, and the topic has since been studied by many authors, including Balinski, Barnette, Athanasiadis and Bjorner. In this note, we provide a unifying approach which allows us to obtain more general results. Moreover, we provide a relation to commutative algebra by relating connectivity problems to graded Betti numbers of the associated Stanley--Reisner rings.
Graphs with large chromatic number induce $3k$-cycles
Answering a question of Kalai and Meshulam, we prove that graphs without induced cycles of length $3k$ have bounded chromatic number. This implies the very first case of a much broader question asserting that every graph with large chromatic number induces a graph $H$ such that the sum of the Betti numbers of the independence complex of $H$ is also large.

The Betti poset in monomial resolutions
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set with unique minimal element $\hat{0}$. We study the Betti poset of $P$, created by deleting elements $q\in P$ for which the open interval $(\hat{0}, q)$ is acyclic. Using basic simplicial topology, we demonstrate an isomorphism in homology between open intervals of the form $(\hat{0},p)\subset P$ and corresponding open intervals in the Betti poset. Our motivating application is that the Betti poset of a monomial ideal's lcm-lattice encodes both its $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-graded Betti numbers and the structure of its minimal free resolution. In the case of rigid monomial ideals, we use the data of the Betti poset to explicitly construct the minimal free resolution. Subsequently, we introduce the notion of rigid deformation, a generalization of Bayer, Peeva, and Sturmfels' generic deformation.

The combinatorics and topology of proper toric maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the topology of toric maps. We show that if $f\colon X\to Y$ is a proper toric morphism, with $X$ simplicial, then the cohomology of every fiber of $f$ is pure and of Hodge-Tate type. When the map is a fibration, we give an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of the fibers in terms of a relative version of the $f$-vector, extending the usual formula for the Betti numbers of a simplicial complete toric variety. We then describe the Decomposition Theorem for a toric fibration, giving in particular a nonnegative combinatorial invariant attached to each cone in the fan of $Y$, which is positive precisely when the corresponding closed subset of $Y$ appears as a support in the Decomposition Theorem. The description of this invariant involves the stalks of the intersection cohomology complexes on $X$ and $Y$, but in the case when both $X$ and $Y$ are simplicial, there is a simple formula in terms of the relative $f$-vector.

Divisors on graphs, orientations, syzygies, and system reliability
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study various ideals arising in the theory of system reliability. We use ideas from the theory of divisors, orientations and matroids on graphs to describe the minimal polyhedral cellular free resolutions of these ideals. In each case we give an explicit combinatorial description of the minimal generating set for each higher syzygy module in terms of the acyclic orientations of the graph, the $q$-reduced divisors and the bounded regions of the graphic hyperplane arrangement. The resolutions of all these ideals are closely related, and their Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. We apply these results to compute the reliability of their associated coherent systems.

A necessary condition for the tightness of odd-dimensional combinatorial manifolds

We present a necessary condition for $(\ell-1)$-connected combinatorial $(2\ell +1)$-manifolds to be tight. As a corollary, we show that there is no tight combinatorial three-manifold with Betti number at most two other than the boundary of the four-simplex and the nine-vertex triangulation of the three-dimensional Klein bottle.

On a class of power ideals
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 219(8):3158-3180, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the class of power ideals generated by the $k^n$ forms $(x_0+ξ^{g_1}x_1+\ldots+ξ^{g_n}x_n)^{(k-1)d}$ where $ξ$ is a fixed primitive $k^{th}$-root of unity and $0\leq g_j\leq k-1$ for all $j$. For $k=2$, by using a $\mathbb{Z}_k^{n+1}$-grading on $\mathbb{C}[x_0,\ldots,x_n]$, we compute the Hilbert series of the associated quotient rings via a simple numerical algorithm. We also conjecture the extension for $k>2$. Via Macaulay duality, those power ideals are related to schemes of fat points with support on the $k^n$ points $[1:ξ^{g_1}:\ldots:ξ^{g_n}]$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We compute Hilbert series, Betti numbers and Gröbner basis for such $0$-dimensional schemes. This explicitly determines the Hilbert series of the power ideal for all $k$: that this agrees with our conjecture for $k>2$ is supported by several computer experiments.
