New upper bounds on the chromatic number of a graph
We outline some ongoing work related to a conjecture of Reed \cite{reed97} on $ω$, $Δ$, and $χ$. We conjecture that the complement of a counterexample $G$ to Reed's conjecture has connectivity on the order of $\log(|G|)$. We prove that this holds for a family (parameterized by $ε> 0$) of relaxed bounds; the $ε= 0$ limit of which is Reed's upper bound.

On the editing distance of graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 58(2) (2008), pp. 123--138 • View PublicationBIB
An edge-operation on a graph $G$ is defined to be either the deletion of an existing edge or the addition of a nonexisting edge. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$, the editing distance from $G$ to $\mathcal{G}$ is the smallest number of edge-operations needed to modify $G$ into a graph from $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we fix a graph $H$ and consider ${\rm Forb}(n,H)$, the set of all graphs on $n$ vertices that have no induced copy of $H$. We provide bounds for the maximum over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$ of the editing distance from $G$ to ${\rm Forb}(n,H)$, using an invariant we call the {\it binary chromatic number} of the graph $H$. We give asymptotically tight bounds for that distance when $H$ is self-complementary and exact results for several small graphs $H$.

Hadwiger's Conjecture for Proper Circular Arc Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Circular arc graphs are graphs whose vertices can be represented as arcs on a circle such that any two vertices are adjacent if and only if their corresponding arcs intersect. Proper circular arc graphs are graphs which have a circular arc representation where no arc is completely contained in any other arc. Hadwiger's conjecture states that if a graph $G$ has chromatic number $k$, then a complete graph of $k$ vertices is a minor of $G$. We prove Hadwiger's conjecture for proper circular arc graphs.

Hom complexes and homotopy theory in the category of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a notion of $\times$-homotopy of graph maps that is based on the internal hom associated to the categorical product in the category of graphs. It is shown that graph $\times$-homotopy is characterized by the topological properties of the $\Hom$ complex, a functorial way to assign a poset (and hence topological space) to a pair of graphs; $\Hom$ complexes were introduced by Lovász and further studied by Babson and Kozlov to give topological bounds on chromatic number. Along the way, we also establish some structural properties of $\Hom$ complexes involving products and exponentials of graphs, as well as a symmetry result which can be used to reprove a theorem of Kozlov involving foldings of graphs. Graph $\times$-homotopy naturally leads to a notion of homotopy equivalence which we show has several equivalent characterizations. We apply the notions of $\times$-homotopy equivalence to the class of dismantlable graphs to get a list of conditions that again characterize these. We end with a discussion of graph homotopies arising from other internal homs, including the construction of `$A$-theory' associated to the cartesian product in the category of reflexive graphs.

Perfect packings with complete graphs minus an edge
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let K_r^- denote the graph obtained from K_r by deleting one edge. We show that for every integer r\ge 4 there exists an integer n_0=n_0(r) such that every graph G whose order n\ge n_0 is divisible by r and whose minimum degree is at least (1-1/chi_{cr}(K_r^-))n contains a perfect K_r^- packing, i.e. a collection of disjoint copies of K_r^- which covers all vertices of G. Here chi_{cr}(K_r^-)=r(r-2)/(r-1) is the critical chromatic number of K_r^-. The bound on the minimum degree is best possible and confirms a conjecture of Kawarabayashi for large n.

A Dynamic View of Circular Colorings
The main contributions of this paper are three-fold. First, we use a dynamic approach based on Reiter's pioneering work on Karp-Miller computation graphs to give a new and short proof of Mohar's Minty-type Theorem. Second, we bridge circular colorings and discrete event dynamic systems to show that the Barbosa and Gafni's results on circular chromatic number can be generalized to edge-weighted symmetric directed graphs. Third, we use the above-mentioned dynamic view of circular colorings to construct new improved lower bounds on the circular chromatic number of a graph. We show as an example that the circular chromatic number of the line graph of the Petersen graph can be determined very easily by using these bounds.

The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings
Let H be any graph. We determine (up to an additive constant) the minimum degree of a graph G which ensures that G has a perfect H-packing (also called an H-factor). More precisely, let delta(H,n) denote the smallest integer t such that every graph G whose order n is divisible by |H| and with delta(G) > t contains a perfect H-packing. We show that delta(H,n) = (1-1/χ*(H))n+O(1). The value of chi*(H) depends on the relative sizes of the colour classes in the optimal colourings of H and satisfies k-1 < chi*(H) \le k, where k is the chromatic number of H.

On Perles' question
The principal aim of this paper is to determine the minimal dimension that a nerve of the cover of the sphere S^h by the open sets not containing a pair of antipodal points could have, and also to determine the minimal cardinality of such cover (or the minimal number of vertices of its nerve). In particular, our result provides the complete answer to the question posed by Micha Perles. Our results could be seen as the extensions of the Lyusternik-Schnirel'man version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. As a consequence, we also obtain the improved lower bound for the local chromatic number of certain class of graphs.
Parity Edge-Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph whose edges are colored, a parity walk is a walk that uses each color an even number of times. The parity edge chromatic number p(G) of a graph G is the least k so that there is a coloring of E(G) using k colors that does not contain a parity path. The strong parity edge chromatic number p'(G) of G is the least k so that there is a coloring of E(G) using k colors with the property that every parity walk is closed. Our main result is to determine p'(K_n). Specifically, if m is the least power of two that is as large as n, then p'(K_n) has value m - 1. As a corollary, we strengthen a special case of an old result of Daykin and Lovasz. Other results include determining p(G) and p'(G) whenever G is a path, cycle, or of the form K_{2,n}, and an upper bound on p'(G) for the case that G is a complete bipartite graph. We conclude with a sample of open problems.

The neighborhood complex of a random graph
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 114 (2007), no. 2, 380--387 • View PublicationBIB
For a graph G, the neighborhood complex N[G] is the simplicial complex having all subsets of vertices with a common neighbor as its faces. It is a well known result of Lovasz that if N[G] is k-connected, then the chromatic number of G is at least k + 3. We prove that the connectivity of the neighborhood complex of a random graph is tightly concentrated, almost always between 1/2 and 2/3 of the expected clique number. We also show that the number of dimensions of nontrivial homology is almost always small, O(log d), compared to the expected dimension d of the complex itself.

A note on Erdős-Diophantine graphs and Diophantine carpets
A Diophantine figure is a set of points on the integer grid $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ where all mutual Euclidean distances are integers. We also speak of Diophantine graphs. In this language a Diophantine figure is a complete Diophantine graph. Due to a famous theorem of Erdős and Anning there are complete Diophantine graphs which are not contained in larger ones. We call them Erdős-Diophantine graphs. A special class of Diophantine graphs are Diophantine carpets. These are planar triangulations of a subset of the integer grid. We give an effective construction for Erdős-Diophantine graphs and characterize the chromatic number of Diophantine carpets.
Enumeration of Unlabeled Outerplanar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine the exact and asymptotic number of unlabeled outerplanar graphs. The exact number g_n of unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices can be computed in polynomial time, and g_n is asymptotically $g n^{-5/2}ρ^{-n}$, where $g\approx0.00909941$ and $ρ^{-1}\approx7.50360$ can be approximated. Using our enumerative results we investigate several statistical properties of random unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices, for instance concerning connectedness, chromatic number, and the number of edges. To obtain the results we combine classical cycle index enumeration with recent results from analytic combinatorics.

Random regular graphs of non-constant degree: Concentration of the chromatic number
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 309(12):4149--4161, 2009 • View PublicationBIB
In this work we show that with high probability the chromatic number of a graph sampled from the random regular graph model $\Gnd$ for $d=o(n^{1/5})$ is concentrated in two consecutive values, thus extending a previous result of Achlioptas and Moore. This concentration phenomena is very similar to that of the binomial random graph model $\Gnp$ with $p=\frac{d}{n}$. Our proof is largely based on ideas of Alon and Krivelevich who proved this two-point concentration result for $\Gnp$ for $p=n^{-δ}$ where $δ>1/2$. The main tool used to derive such a result is a careful analysis of the distribution of edges in $\Gnd$, relying both on the switching technique and on bounding the probability of exponentially small events in the configuration model.

Colourings of the Cartesian Product of Graphs and Multiplicative Sidon Sets
Published in Combinatorica 29.4:449-466, 2009 • Search Publication
Let $F$ be a family of connected bipartite graphs, each with at least three vertices. A proper vertex colouring of a graph $G$ with no bichromatic subgraph in $F$ is $\F$-free. The $F$-free chromatic number $χ(G,F)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colours in an $F$-free colouring of $G$. For appropriate choices of $F$, several well-known types of colourings fit into this framework, including acyclic colourings, star colourings, and distance-2 colourings. This paper studies $F$-free colourings of the cartesian product of graphs. Let $H$ be the cartesian product of the graphs $G_1,G_2,...,G_d$. Our main result establishes an upper bound on the $F$-free chromatic number of $H$ in terms of the maximum $F$-free chromatic number of the $G_i$ and the following number-theoretic concept. A set $S$ of natural numbers is $k$-multiplicative Sidon if $ax=by$ implies $a=b$ and $x=y$ whenever $x,y\in S$ and $1\leq a,b\leq k$. Suppose that $χ(G_i,F)\leq k$ and $S$ is a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set of cardinality $d$. We prove that $χ(H,F) \leq 1+2k\cdot\max S$. We then prove that the maximum density of a $k$-multiplicative Sidon set is $Θ(1/\log k)$. It follows that $χ(H,F) \leq O(dk\log k)$. We illustrate the method with numerous examples, some of which generalise or improve upon existing results in the literature.

On Visibility Graphs of Point Sets in the Plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
The visibility graph Vis(X) of a discrete point set X in the plane has vertex set X and an edge xy for every two points x,y\in X whenever there is no other point in X on the line segment between x and y. We show that for every graph G, there is a point set X, such that the subgraph of Vis(X\cup Z^2) induced by X is isomorphic to G. As a consequence, we show that there are visibility graphs of arbitrary high chromatic number with clique number six settling a question by Kára, Pór and Wood.

On chromatic number of unit-quadrance graphs (finite Euclidean graphs)
The quadrance between two points A_1=(x_1, y_1) and A_2=(x_2, y_2) is the number Q (A_1, A_2) = (x_1 - x_2)^2 + (y_1 - y_2)^2. Let q be an odd prime power and F_q be the finite field with $q$ elements. The unit-quadrance graph D_q has the vertex set F_q^2, and X, Y in F_q^2 are adjacent if and only if Q(A_1, A_2) = 1. Let χ(F_q^2) be the chromatic number of graph D_q. In this note, we will show that q^{1/2}(1/2+o(1)) <= χ(F_q^2) <= q(1/2 + o(1)). As a corollary, we have a construction of triangle-free graphs D_q of order q^2 with χ(D_q) >= q/2 for infinitely many values of q.

Some Properties of Alphabet Overlap Graphs
Consider a graph G = G(k,d,s) with vertex set the set of all k-letter words over an alphabet of size d. An edge e = vw is in E iff v is distinct from w and the last(first) k-s letters of v are identical to the first(last) k-s letters of w. In this paper we show that G is Hamiltonian for all non-trivial values of the parameters and obtain exact values for its chromatic number when s is greater than or equal to k/2. We also obtain bounds when the chromatic number is less than k/2.

Colouring Lines in Projective Space
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $V$ be a vector space of dimension $v$ over a field of order $q$. The $q$-Kneser graph has the $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$ as its vertices, where two subspaces $α$ and $β$ are adjacent if and only if $α\capβ$ is the zero subspace. This paper is motivated by the problem of determining the chromatic numbers of these graphs. This problem is trivial when $k=1$ (and the graphs are complete) or when $v<2k$ (and the graphs are empty). We establish some basic theory in the general case. Then specializing to the case $k=2$, we show that the chromatic number is $q^2+q$ when $v=4$ and $(q^{v-1}-1)/(q-1)$ when $v > 4$. In both cases we characterise the minimal colourings.

The chromatic numbers of double coverings of a graph

If we fix a spanning subgraph $H$ of a graph $G$, we can define a chromatic number of $H$ with respect to $G$ and we show that it coincides with the chromatic number of a double covering of $G$ with co-support $H$. We also find a few estimations for the chromatic numbers of $H$ with respect to $G$.

Bounds for the $b$-chromatic number of some families of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for $b$-chromatic number of $K_{1,t}$ -free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are in terms of either clique number or chromatic number of graphs or biclique number for bipartite graphs. We show that all the bounds are tight.
