Let $Σ$ be a finite regular cell complex with $\emptyset \in Σ$, and regard it as a partially ordered set (poset) by inclusion. Let $R$ be the incidence algebra of the poset $Σ$ over a field $k$. Corresponding to the Verdier duality for constructible sheaves on $Σ$, we have a dualizing complex $w \in D^b(mod_{R \otimes_k R})$ giving a duality functor from $D^b(mod_R)$ to itself. $w$ satisfies the Auslander condition. Our duality is somewhat analogous to the Serre duality for projective schemes ($\emptyset$ plays a similar role to that of "irrelevant ideals"). If $H^i(w) \ne 0$ for exactly one $i$, then the underlying topological space of $Σ$ is Cohen-Macaulay (in the sense of the Stanley-Reisner ring theory). The converse also holds when $Σ$ is a simplicial complex.
$R$ is always a Koszul ring with $R^! \cong R^op$. The relation between the Koszul duality for $R$ and the Verdier duality is discussed. This result is a variant of a theorem of Vybornov. The Mobius function of the poset $\hatΣ$ is also discussed.

We define a poset of partitions associated to an operad. We prove that the operad is Koszul if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay.
In one hand, this characterisation allows us to compute the homology of the poset. This homology is given by the Koszul dual operad. On the other hand, we get new methods for proving that an operad is Koszul.

Let A be an integer (d x n) matrix, and assume that the convex hull conv(A) of its columns is a simplex of dimension d-1. Write \NA for the semigroup generated by the columns of A. It was proved by M. Saito [math.AG/0012257] that the semigroup ring \CC[\NA] over the complex numbers \CC is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the rank of the GKZ hypergeometric system H_A(beta) equals the normalized volume of conv(A) for all complex parameters beta in \CC^d. Our refinement here shows, in this simplicial case, that H_A(beta) has rank strictly larger than the volume of conv(A) if and only if beta lies in the Zariski closure in \CC^d of all \ZZ^d-graded degrees where the local cohomology H^i_m(\CC[\NA]) at the maximal ideal m is nonzero for some i < d.
Segre and Rees products of posets, with ring-theoretic applications
We introduce (weighted) Segre and Rees products for posets and show that these constructions preserve the Cohen-Macaulay property over a field $k$ and homotopically. As an application we show that the weighted Segre product of two affine semigroup rings that are Koszul is again Koszul. This result generalizes previous results by Crona on weighted Segre products of polynomial rings.
We also give a new proof of the fact that the Rees ring of a Koszul affine semigroup ring is again Koszul.
The paper ends with a list of some open problems in the area.
Bier spheres and posets
In 1992 Thomas Bier presented a strikingly simple method to produce a huge number of simplicial (n-2)-spheres on 2n vertices as deleted joins of a simplicial complex on n vertices with its combinatorial Alexander dual.
Here we interpret his construction as giving the poset of all the intervals in a boolean algebra that "cut across an ideal." Thus we arrive at a substantial generalization of Bier's construction: the Bier posets Bier(P,I) of an arbitrary bounded poset P of finite length. In the case of face posets of PL spheres this yields cellular "generalized Bier spheres." In the case of Eulerian or Cohen-Macaulay posets P we show that the Bier posets Bier(P,I) inherit these properties.
In the boolean case originally considered by Bier, we show that all the spheres produced by his construction are shellable, which yields "many shellable spheres", most of which lack convex realization. Finally, we present simple explicit formulas for the g-vectors of these simplicial spheres and verify that they satisfy a strong form of the g-conjecture for spheres.

We introduce a notion of lexicographic shellability for pure, balanced boolean cell complexes, modelled after the $CL$-shellability criterion of Björner and Wachs for posets and its generalization by Kozlov called $CC$-shellability. We give a lexicographic shelling for the quotient of the order complex of a Boolean algebra of rank $2n$ by the action of the wreath product $S_2\wr S_n$ of symmetric groups, and we provide a partitioning for the quotient complex $Δ(Π_n)/S_n $.
Stanley asked for a description of the symmetric group representation $β_S $ on the homology of the rank-selected partition lattice $Π_n^S $ in [St2], and in particular he asked when the multiplicity $b_S(n)$ of the trivial representation in $β_S$ is 0. One consequence of the partitioning for $\dps $ is a (fairly complicated) combinatorial interpretation for $b_S(n) $; another is a simple proof of Hanlon's result that $b_{1,..., i}(n)=0$. Using a result of Garsia and Stanton, we deduce from our shelling for $Δ(B_{2n})/S_2 \wr S_n$ that the ring of invariants $k[x_1,..., x_{2n}]^{S_2\wr S_n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $k$.

We study the quotient complex $Δ(B_{lm})/S_l\wr S_m$ as a means of deducing facts about the ring $k[x_1,..., x_{lm}]^{S_l\wr S_m}$. It is shown in [He] that this quotient complex is shellable when $l=2$, implying Cohen-Macaulayness of $k[x_1,..., x_{2m}]^{S_2\wr S_m}$ for any field $k$. We now confirm for all pairs $(l,m)$ with $l>2$ and $m>1$ that this quotient complex is not Cohen-Macaulay over $\integ /2\integ $, but it is Cohen-Macaulay over fields of characteristic $p>m$ (independent of $l$). This yields corresponding characteristic-dependent results for the ring of invariants $k[x_1,..., x_{lm}]^{S_l\wr S_m}$. We also prove that this quotient complex and the links of many of its faces are collapsible, and we give a partitioning for this quotient complex.

This paper uses dualities between facet ideal theory and Stanley-Reisner theory to show that the facet ideal of a simplicial tree is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The proof involves showing that the Alexander dual (or the cover dual, as we call it here) of a simplicial tree is a componentwise linear ideal. We conclude with additional combinatorial properties of simplicial trees.
Toric Initial Ideals of $Δ$-Normal Configurations: Cohen-Macaulayness and Degree Bounds
A normal (respectively, graded normal) vector configuration $A$ defines the toric ideal $I_A$ of a normal (respectively, projectively normal) toric variety. These ideals are Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, $I_A$ is generated in degree at most the dimension of $I_A$. Based on this, Sturmfels asked if these properties extend to initial ideals -- when $A$ is normal, is there an initial ideal of $I_A$ that is Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, does $I_A$ have a Gröbner basis generated in degree at most $dim(I_A)$ ? In this paper, we answer both questions positively for $Δ$-normal configurations. These are normal configurations that admit a regular triangulation $Δ$ with the property that the subconfiguration in each cell of the triangulation is again normal. Such configurations properly contain among them all vector configurations that admit a regular unimodular triangulation. We construct non-trivial families of both $Δ$-normal and non-$Δ$-normal configurations.

Given a simplicial complex, it is easy to construct a generic deformation of its Stanley-Reisner ideal. The main question under investigation in this paper is how to characterize the simplicial complexes such that their Stanley-Reisner ideals have Cohen-Macaulay generic deformations. Algorithms are presented to construct such deformations for matroid complexes, shifted complexes, and tree complexes.

In this paper we study simplicial complexes as higher dimensional graphs in order to produce algebraic statements about their facet ideals. We introduce a large class of square-free monomial ideals with Cohen-Macaulay quotients, and a criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of facet ideals of simplicial trees. Along the way, we generalize several concepts from graph theory to simplicial complexes.

It is shown that the coset lattice of a finite group has shellable order complex if and only if the group is complemented. Furthermore, the coset lattice is shown to have a Cohen-Macaulay order complex in exactly the same conditions. The group theoretical tools used are relatively elementary, and avoid the classification of finite simple groups and of minimal finite simple groups.
Stanley-Reisner rings and torus actions
We review a class of problems on the borders of topology of torus actions, commutative homological algebra and combinatorial geometry, which is currently being investigated by Victor Buchstaber and the author. The text builds on the lectures delivered on the transformation group courses in Osaka City University and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. We start with discussing several well-known results and problems on combinatorial geometry of polytopes and simplicial complexes, and then move gradually towards investigating the combinatorial structures associated with spaces acted on by the torus. Parallelly, we set up the required commutative algebra apparatus, including Cohen-Macaulay/Gorenstein rings and Stanley-Reisner face rings of simplicial complexes.
Hierarchies of simplicial complexes via the BGG-correspondence
Via the BGG-correspondence a simplicial complex D on [n] is transformed into a complex of coherent sheaves L(D) on the projective space n-1-space. In general we compute the support of each of its cohomology sheaves.
When the Alexander dual D* is Cohen-Macaulay there is only one such non-zero cohomology sheaf. We investigate when this sheaf can be an a'th syzygy sheaf in a locally free resolution and show that this corresponds exactly to the case of D* being a+1-Cohen-Macaulay as defined by K.Baclawski.
By putting further conditions on the sheaves we get nice subclasses of a+1- Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes whose f-vector depends only on a and the invariants n,d, and c. When a=0 these are the bi-Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes, when a=1 and d=2c cyclic polytopes are examples, and when a=c we get Alexander duals of the Steiner systems S(c,d,n).
We also show that D* is Gorenstein* iff the associated coherent sheaf of D is an ideal sheaf.

Let $m_{12}$, $m_{13}$, ..., $m_{n-1,n}$ be the slopes of the $\binom{n}{2}$ lines connecting $n$ points in general position in the plane. The ideal $I_n$ of all algebraic relations among the $m_{ij}$ defines a configuration space called the {\em slope variety of the complete graph}. We prove that $I_n$ is reduced and Cohen-Macaulay, give an explicit Gröbner basis for it, and compute its Hilbert series combinatorially. We proceed chiefly by studying the associated Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex, which has an intricate recursive structure. In addition, we are able to answer many questions about the geometry of the slope variety by translating them into purely combinatorial problems concerning enumeration of trees.

A picture P of a graph G = (V,E) consists of a point P(v) for each vertex v in V and a line P(e) for each edge e in E, all lying in the projective plane over a field k and subject to containment conditions corresponding to incidence in G. A graph variety is an algebraic set whose points parametrize pictures of G. We consider three kinds of graph varieties: the picture space X(G) of all pictures, the picture variety V(G), an irreducible component of X(G) of dimension 2|V|, defined as the closure of the set of pictures on which all the P(v) are distinct, and the slope variety S(G), obtained by forgetting all data except the slopes of the lines P(e). We use combinatorial techniques (in particular, the theory of combinatorial rigidity) to obtain the following geometric and algebraic information on these varieties: (1) a description and combinatorial interpretation of equations defining each variety set-theoretically; (2) a description of the irreducible components of X(G); and (3) a proof that V(G) and S(G) are Cohen-Macaulay when G satisfies a sparsity condition, rigidity independence. In addition, our techniques yield a new proof of the equality of two matroids studied in rigidity theory.

To a simplicial complex, we associate a square-free monomial ideal in the polynomial ring generated by its vertex set over a field. We study algebraic properties of this ideal via combinatorial properties of the simplicial complex. By generalizing the notion of a tree from graphs to simplicial complexes, we show that ideals associated to trees satisfy sliding depth condition, and therefore have normal and Cohen-Macaulay Rees rings. We also discuss connections with the theory of Stanley-Reisner rings.

Via the BGG correspondence a simplicial complex Delta on [n] is transformed into a complex of coherent sheaves on P^n-1. We show that this complex reduces to a coherent sheaf F exactly when the Alexander dual Delta^* is Cohen-Macaulay. We then determine when both Delta and Delta^* are Cohen-Macaulay. This corresponds to F being a locally Cohen-Macaulay sheaf. Lastly we conjecture for which range of invariants of such Delta it must be a cone.

Every quotient R/I of a semigroup ring R by a radical monomial ideal I has a unique minimal injective-like resolution by direct sums of quotients of R modulo prime monomial ideals. The quotient R/I is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if every summand in cohomological degree $i$ has dimension exactly dim(R/I) - i. This Cohen-Macaulay characterization reduces to the Eagon-Reiner theorem by Alexander duality when R is a polynomial ring. The proof exploits a graded ring-theoretic generalization of the Zeeman spectral sequence, thereby also providing a combinatorial topological version for polyhedral cell complexes, involving no commutative algebra.
