Face ring multiplicity via CM-connectivity sequences

The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolution of the face ring via the Cohen-Macaulay connectivity of the skeletons of the complex.

Let $Φ$ be a finite root system of rank $n$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. The generalized cluster complex $Δ^m (Φ)$ was introduced by S. Fomin and N. Reading. It was conjectured by these authors that $Δ^m (Φ)$ is shellable and by V. Reiner that it is $(m+1)$-Cohen-Macaulay, in the sense of Baclawski. These statements are proved in this paper. Analogous statements are shown to hold for the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of $Δ^m (Φ)$. An explicit homotopy equivalence is given between $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ and the poset of generalized noncrossing partitions, associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by D. Armstrong.

A tetrahedral curve is a (usually nonreduced) curve in P^3 defined by an unmixed, height two ideal generated by monomials. We characterize when these curves are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay by associating a graph to each curve and, using results from combinatorial commutative algebra and Alexander duality, relating the structure of the complementary graph to the Cohen-Macaulay property.

Let G be a simple (i.e., no loops and no multiple edges) graph. We investigate the question of how to modify G combinatorially to obtain a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graph. We focus on modifications given by adding configurations of whiskers to G, where to add a whisker one adds a new vertex and an edge connecting this vertex to an existing vertex in G. We give various sufficient conditions and necessary conditions on a subset S of the vertices of G so that the graph G \cup W(S), obtained from G by adding a whisker to each vertex in S, is a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graph. For instance, we show that if S is a vertex cover of G, then G \cup W(S) is a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graph. On the other hand, we show that if G \backslash S is not sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, then G \cup W(S) is not a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graph. Our work is inspired by and generalizes a result of Villarreal on the use of whiskers to get Cohen-Macaulay graphs.
Several Convex-Ear Decompositions
In this paper we give convex-ear decompositions for the order complexes of several classes of posets, namely supersolvable lattices with non-zero Mobius functions and rank-selected subposets of such lattices, rank-selected geometric lattices, and rank-selected face posets of shellable complexes which do not include the top rank. These decompositions give us many new inequalities for the h-vectors of these complexes. In addition, our decomposition of rank-selected face posets of shellable complexes allows us to prove inequalities for the flag h-vector of face posets of Cohen-Macaulay complexes.

Given a finite group G and a natural number n, we study the structure of the complex of nested sets of the associated Dowling lattice Q(G) and of its subposet of the G-symmetric partitions Q_G which was recently introduced by Hultman together with the complex of G-symmetric phylogenetic trees T_G. Hultman shows that T_G and Q_G are homotopy equivalent and Cohen-Macaulay, and determines the rank of their top homology. An application of the theory of building sets and nested set complexes by Feichtner and Kozlov shows that in fact T_G is subdivided by the order complex of Q_G. We introduce the complex of Dowling trees T(G) and prove that it is subdivided by the order complex of Q(G) and contains T_G as a subcomplex. We show that T(G) is obtained from T_G by successive coning over certain subcomplexes. We explicitly and independently calculate how many homology spheres are added in passing from T_G to T(G).

Let F be a field and let G be a finite graph with a total ordering on its edge set. Richard Stanley noted that the Stanley-Reisner ring F(G) of the broken circuit complex of G is Cohen-Macaulay. Jason Brown gave an explicit description of a homogeneous system of parameters for F(G) in terms of fundamental cocircuits in G. So F(G) modulo this hsop is a finite dimensional vector space. We conjecture an explicit monomial basis for this vector space in terms of the circuits of G and prove that the conjecture is true for two infinite families of graphs. We also explore an application of these ideas to bounding the number of acyclic orientations of G from above.

We introduce and study vertex cover algebras of weighted simplicial complexes. These algebras are special classes of symbolic Rees algebras. We show that symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals are finitely generated and that such an algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay if the monomial ideal is squarefree. For a simple graph, the vertex cover algebra is generated by elements of degree 2, and it is standard graded if and only if the graph is bipartite. We also give a general upper bound for the maximal degree of the generators of vertex cover algebras.

The main result is a proof that the g-vector of a simplicial complex with a convex ear decomposition is an M-vector. This is a generalization of similar results for matroid complexes. We also show that a finite building has a convex ear decomposition. This leads to connections between higher Cohen-Macaulay connectivity and increasing h-vectors.

For several important classes of manifolds acted on by the torus, the information about the action can be encoded combinatorially by a regular n-valent graph with vector labels on its edges, which we refer to as the torus graph. By analogy with the GKM-graphs, we introduce the notion of equivariant cohomology of a torus graph, and show that it is isomorphic to the face ring of the associated simplicial poset. This extends a series of previous results on the equivariant cohomology of torus manifolds. As a primary combinatorial application, we show that a simplicial poset is Cohen-Macaulay if its face ring is Cohen-Macaulay. This completes the algebraic characterisation of Cohen-Macaulay posets initiated by Stanley. We also study blow-ups of torus graphs and manifolds from both the algebraic and the topological points of view.

We show how a simplicial complex arising from the WDVV (Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde) equations of string theory is the Whitehouse complex. Using discrete Morse theory, we give an elementary proof that the Whitehouse complex $Δ_n$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of $(n-2)!$ spheres of dimension $n-4$. We also verify the Cohen-Macaulay property. Additionally, recurrences are given for the face enumeration of the complex and the Hilbert series of the associated pre-WDVV ring.

Let G be a simple undirected graph on n vertices, and let I(G) \subseteq R = k[x_1,...,x_n] denote its associated edge ideal. We show that all chordal graphs G are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; our proof depends upon showing that the Alexander dual of I(G) is componentwise linear. Our result complements Faridi's theorem that the facet ideal of a simplicial tree is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and implies Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng's theorem that a chordal graph is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if its edge ideal is unmixed. We also characterize the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay cycles and produce some examples of nonchordal sequentially Cohen-Macaulay graphs.

We study monomial ideals using the operation polarization to first turn them into square-free monomial ideals. We focus on monomial ideals whose polarization produce simplicial trees, and show that many of the properties of simplicial trees hold for such ideals. This includes Cohen-Macaulayness of the Rees ring, and being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. The appendix is an independent study of primary decomposition in a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay module. We demonstrate how every submodule appearing in the filtration of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay module can be described in terms of the primary decomposition of the 0-submodule.

We prove that for $d\geq 3$, the 1-skeleton of any $(d-1)$-dimensional doubly Cohen Macaulay (abbreviated 2-CM) complex is generically $d$-rigid. This implies the following two corollaries (by Kalai and Lee respectively): Barnette's lower bound inequalities for boundary complexes of simplicial polytopes hold for every 2-CM complex (of dimension $\geq 2$). Moreover, the initial part $(g_0,g_1,g_2)$ of the $g$-vector of a 2-CM complex (of dimension $\geq 3$) is an $M$-sequence. It was conjectured by Björner and Swartz that the entire $g$-vector of a 2-CM complex is an $M$-sequence.

We show that a finite regular cell complex with the intersection property is a Cohen-Macaulay space iff the top enriched cohomology module is the only nonvanishing one. We prove a comprehensive generalization of Balinski's theorem on convex polytopes. Also we show that for any Cohen-Macaulay cell complex as above, although there is no generalization of the Stanley-Reisner ring of simplicial complexes, there is a generalization of its canonical module.

Let $W$ be a Weyl group corresponding to the root system $A_{n-1}$ or $B_n$.
We define a simplicial complex $ Δ^m_W $ in terms of polygon dissections for such a group and any positive integer $m$. For $ m=1 $, $ Δ^m_W$ is isomorphic to the cluster complex corresponding to $ W $, defined in \cite{FZ}. We enumerate the faces of $ Δ^m_W $ and show that the entries of its $h$-vector are given by the generalized Narayana numbers $ N^m_W(i) $, defined in \cite{Atha3}. We also prove that for any $ m \geq 1$ the complex $ Δ^m_W $ is shellable and hence Cohen-Macaulay.

For a simplicial complex X on {1,2, ..., n} we define enriched homology and cohomology modules. They are graded modules over k[x_1, ..., x_n] whose ranks are equal to the dimensions of the reduced homology and cohomology groups.
We characterize Cohen-Macaulay, l-Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and Gorenstein* complexes X, and also orientable manifolds in terms of the enriched modules. We introduce the notion of girth for simplicial complexes and make a conjecture relating the girth to invariants of the simplicial complex.
We also put strong vanishing conditions on the enriched homology modules and describe the simplicial complexes we then get. They are block designs and include Steiner systems S(c,d,n) and cyclic polytopes of even dimension.
A Broken Circuit Ring
Given a matroid M represented by a linear subspace L in n-space (equivalently by an arrangement of n hyperplanes in L), we define a graded ring R(L) which degenerates to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex for any choice of ordering of the ground set. In particular, R(L) is Cohen-Macaulay, and may be used to compute the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M. We give a geometric interpretation of Spec R(L), as well as a stratification indexed by the flats of M.

We extend a reciprocity theorem of Stanley about enumeration of integer points in polyhedral cones when one exchanges strict and weak inequalities. The proof highlights the roles played by Cohen-Macaulayness and canonical modules. The extension raises the issue of whether a Cohen-Macaulay complex of dimension d embedded piecewise-linearly in d-space is necessarily a d-ball. This is observed to be true for d at most 3, but false for d=4.
