The antimagic orientation problems for graphs obtained by some graph operations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple graph $G$ is said to admit an antimagic orientation if there exist an orientation on the edges of $G$ and a bijection from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,|E(G)|\}$ such that the vertex sums of vertices are pairwise distinct, where the vertex sum of a vertex is defined to be the sum of the labels of the in-edges minus that of the out-edges incident to the vertex. It was conjectured by Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz~\cite{HMS10} in 2010 that every connected simple graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we prove that the Mycielski construction and the corona product for graphs with some conditions yield graphs satisfying the above conjecture.

Edge rings with $q$-linear resolutions
Published in Journal of Algebra 593 (2022), 550--567 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper, we give a complete classification of connected simple graphs whose edge rings have a $q$-linear resolution with $q \geq 2$. In particular, we show that the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph with a $q$-linear resolution, where $q \geq 3$, is a hypersurface, which was conjectured by Hibi, Matsuda, and Tsuchiya.

The distance spectrum of the complements of graphs of diameter greater than three
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose that $G$ is a connected simple graph with the vertex set $V( G ) = \{ v_1,v_2,\cdots ,v_n \} $. Let $d( v_i,v_j ) $ be the distance between $v_i$ and $v_j$. Then the distance matrix of $G$ is $D( G ) =( d_{ij} )_{n\times n}$, where $d_{ij}=d( v_i,v_j ) $. Since $D( G )$ is a non-negative real symmetric matrix, its eigenvalues can be arranged $λ_1(G)\ge λ_2(G)\ge \cdots \ge λ_n(G)$, where eigenvalues $λ_1(G)$ and $λ_n(G)$ are called the distance spectral radius and the least distance eigenvalue of $G$, respectively. The {\it diameter} of graph $G$ is the farthest distance between all pairs of vertices. In this paper, we determine the unique graph whose distance spectral radius attains maximum and minimum among all complements of graphs of diameter greater than three, respectively. Furthermore, we also characterize the unique graph whose least distance eigenvalue attains maximum and minimum among all complements of graphs of diameter greater than three, respectively.

The Terwilliger algebra of the twisted Grassmann graph: the thin case
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 28 (2020) #P4.15 • View PublicationBIB
The Terwilliger algebra $T(x)$ of a finite connected simple graph $Γ$ with respect to a vertex $x$ is the complex semisimple matrix algebra generated by the adjacency matrix $A$ of $Γ$ and the diagonal matrices $E_i^*(x)=\operatorname{diag}(v_i)$ $(i=0,1,2,\dots)$, where $v_i$ denotes the characteristic vector of the set of vertices at distance $i$ from $x$. The twisted Grassmann graph $\tilde{J}_q(2D+1,D)$ discovered by Van Dam and Koolen in 2005 has two orbits of the automorphism group on its vertex set, and it is known that one of the orbits has the property that $T(x)$ is thin whenever $x$ is chosen from it, i.e., every irreducible $T(x)$-module $W$ satisfies $\dim E_i^*(x)W\leqslant 1$ for all $i$. In this paper, we determine all the irreducible $T(x)$-modules of $\tilde{J}_q(2D+1,D)$ for this "thin" case.
Charting the space of chemical nut graphs
Molecular graphs of unsaturated carbon frameworks or hydrocarbons pruned of hydrogen atoms, are chemical graphs. A chemical graph is a connected simple graph of maximum degree $3$ or less. A nut graph is a connected simple graph with a singular adjacency matrix that has one zero eigenvalue and a non-trivial kernel eigenvector without zero entries. Nut graphs have no vertices of degree $1$: they are leafless. The intersection of these two sets, the chemical nut graphs, is of interest in applications in chemistry and molecular physics, corresponding to structures with fully distributed radical reactivity and omniconducting behaviour at the Fermi level. A chemical nut graph consists of $v_2 \ge 0$ vertices of degree $2$ and an even number, $v_3 > 0$, of vertices of degree $3$. With the aid of systematic local constructions that produce larger nut graphs from smaller, the combinations $(v_3, v_2)$ corresponding to realisable chemical nut graphs are characterised. Apart from a finite set of small cases, and two simply defined infinite series, all combinations $(v_3, v_2 )$ with even values of $v_3 > 0$ are realisable as chemical nut graphs. Of these combinations, only $(20,0)$ cannot be realised by a planar chemical nut graph. The main result characterises the ranges of edge counts for chemical nut graphs of all orders $n$.
On graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of extremal multiplicity
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph on $n$ vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$ and $ρ_{n-1}(G)$ be the second least eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}(G)$. Denote by $ν(G)$ the independence number of $G$. Recently, the paper [Characterization of graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$, arXiv:1912.13227] discussed the graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$. However, there is one remaining case (graphs with $ρ_{n-1}(G)\neq 1$ and $ν(G)= 2$) not considered. In this paper, we focus on cographs and graphs with diameter 3 to investigate the graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$.
Some new general lower bounds for mixed metric dimension of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected simple graph. The distance $d(u,v)$ between vertices $u$ and $v$ from $V$ is the number of edges in the shortest $u-v$ path. If $e=uv \in E$ is an edge in $G$ than distance $d(w,e)$ where $w$ is some vertex in $G$ is defined as $d(w,e)=\min(d(w,u),d(w,v))$. Now we can say that vertex $w \in V$ resolves two elements $x,y \in V \cup E$ if $d(w,x) \neq d(w,y)$. The mixed resolving set is a set of vertices $S$, $S\subseteq V$ if and only if any two elements of $E \cup V$ are resolved by some element of $S$. A minimal resolving set related to inclusion is called mixed resolving basis, and its cardinality is called the mixed metric dimension of a graph $G$. This graph invariant is recently introduced and it is of interest to find its general properties and determine its values for various classes of graphs. Since the problem of finding mixed metric dimension is a minimization problem, of interest is also to find lower bounds of good quality. This paper will introduce three new general lower bounds. The exact values of mixed metric dimension for torus graph is determined using one of these lower bounds. Finally, the comparison between new lower bounds and those known in the literature will be presented on two groups of instances: - all 21 conected graphs of order 5; - selected 12 well-known graphs with order from 10 up to 36.

On free products of graphs
Published in AUSTRALASIAN JOURNAL OF COMBINATORICS 78.1 (2020): 154-176 • Search Publication
We define a free product of connected simple graphs that is equivalent to several existing definitions when the graphs are vertex-transitive but differs otherwise. The new definition is designed for the automorphism group of the free product to be as large as possible, and we give sufficient criteria for it to be non-discrete. Finally, we transfer Tits' classification of automorphisms of trees and simplicity criterion to free products of graphs.

Algebraic structures on graph associahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
M. Carr and S. Devadoss introduced in [7] the notion of tubing on a finite simple graph $Γ$, in the context of configuration spaces on the Hilbert plane. To any finite simple graph $Γ$ they associated a finite partially ordered set, whose elements are the tubings of $Γ$ and whose geometric realization is a convex polytope ${\mathcal K}Γ$, the graph-associahedron. For the complete graphs they recovered permutahedra, for linear graphs they got Stasheff's associahedra, while for simple graph they obtained the standard simplexes. The goal of the present work is to give an \emph{algebraic} description of graph associahedra. We introduce a substitution operation on tubings, which allows us to describe the set of faces of graph-associahedra as a free object, spanned by the set of all connected simple graphs, under operations given via connected subgraphs. The boundary maps of graph-associahedra defines natural derivations in this context. Along the way, we introduce a topological interpretation of the graph tubings and our new operations. In the last section, we show that substitution of tubings may be understood in the context of M. Batanin and M. Markl's operadic categories.

The general spectral radius and majorization theorem of $t$-cone graphs with given degree sequences
The general spectral radius of a graph $G$, denoted by $Θ(G,α)$, is the maximal eigenvalue of $M_α(G)=A(G)+αD(G)$ $(α\geq 0)$, where $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ are the adjacency matrix and the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of $G$, respectively. A graph $G$ is called $Θ_α$-maximal in a class of connected simple graphs $\mathcal {G}$ if $Θ(G,α)$ is maximal among all graphs of $\mathcal {G}$. A $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graph is the join of a complete graph $K_t$ and a $c$-cyclic connected simple graph. Let $π=\big(d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n\big)$ and $π'=\big(d'_1,d'_2,\ldots,d'_n\big)$ be two non-increasing degree sequences of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $n$ vertices. We say $π$ is strictly majorized by $π'$, denoted by $π\lhd π'$, if $π\neq π'$, $\sum_{i=1}^n d_i=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i'$, and $\sum_{i=1}^k d_i\leq \sum_{i=1}^k d_i'$ for $k=1,2,\ldots,n-1$. Denote by $Γ(π,t;c)$ the class of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $π$ as its degree sequence. In this paper, we determine some properties of $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and characterize the unique $Θ_α$-maximal graph of $Γ(π,t;0)$ \big(resp. $Γ(π,t;1)$ and $Γ(π,t;2)$\big). Moreover, we prove that if $π\lhd π'$, $G$ and $G'$ are the $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and $Γ(π',t;c)$ respectively, then $Θ(G,α)<Θ(G',α)$ for $c\in \big\{0,1\big\}$, and we also consider the similar result for $c=2$.

Edge rings of bipartite graphs with linear resolutions

Ohsugi and Hibi characterized the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph with a $2$-linear resolution. On the other hand, Hibi, Matsuda and the author conjectured that the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph with a $q$-linear resolution, where $q \geq 3$, is a hypersurface and proved the case $q=3$. In the present paper, we solve this conjecture for the case of finite connected simple bipartite graphs.

The least signless Laplacian eigenvalue of the complements of bicyclic graphs
Suppose that $G$ is a connected simple graph with the vertex set $V(G)=\{v_1, v_2,\cdots,v_n\}$. Then the adjacency matrix of $G$ is $A(G)=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$, where $a_{ij}=1$ if $v_i$ is adjacent to $v_j$, and otherwise $a_{ij}=0$. The degree matrix $D(G)=diag(d_{G}(v_1), d_{G}(v_2), \dots, d_{G}(v_n)),$ where $d_{G}(v_i)$ denotes the degree of $v_i$ in the graph $G$ ($1\leq i\leq n$). The matrix $Q(G)=D(G)+A(G)$ is called the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. The least eigenvalue of $Q(G)$ is also called the least signless Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. In this paper we give two graft transformations and then use them to characterize the unique connected graph whose least signless Laplacian eigenvalue is minimum among the complements of all bicyclic graphs.

Induced matching numbers of finite graphs and edge ideals
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $V(G) = \{x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ and $I(G) \subset K[V(G)]$ its edge ideal, where $K[V(G)]$ is the polynomial ring in $x_1, \ldots, x_n$ over a field $K$ with each ${\rm deg} x_i = 1$ and where $I(G)$ is generated by those squarefree quadratic monomials $x_ix_j$ for which $\{x_i, x_j\}$ is an edge of $G$. In the present paper, given integers $1 \leq a \leq r$ and $s \geq 1$, the existence of a finite connected simple graph $G = G(a, r, d)$ with ${\rm im}(G) = a$, ${\rm reg}(R/I(G)) = r$ and ${\rm deg} h_{K[V(G)]/I(G)} (λ) = s$, where ${\rm im}(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$ and where $h_{K[V(G)]/I(G)} (λ)$ is the $h$-polynomial of $K[V(G)]/I(G)$.
Some results and a conjecture on certain subclasses of graphs according to the relations among certain energies, degrees and conjugate degrees of graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with degree sequence $(d)=(d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n)$ and conjugate degree sequence $(d^*)=(d_1^*,d_2^*,\ldots,d_n^*)$. In \cite{AkbariGhorbaniKoolenObudi2010,DasMojallalGutman2017} it was proven that $\mathcal{E}(G)\leq \sum_{i=1}^{n} \sqrt{d_i}$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{n} \sqrt{d_i^*} \leq LEL(G) \leq IE(G) \leq \sum_{i=1}^{n} \sqrt{d_i}$, where $\mathcal{E}(G)$, $LEL(G)$ and $IE(G)$ are the energy, the Laplacian-energy-like invariant and the incidence energy of $G$, respectively, and in \cite{DasMojallalGutman2017} it was concluded that the class of all connected simple graphs of order $n$ can be dividend into four subclasses according to the position of $\mathcal{E}(G)$ in the order relations above. Then, they proposed a problem about characterizing all graphs in each subclass. In this paper, we attack this problem. First, we count the number of graphs of order $n$ in each of four subclasses for every $1\leq n \leq 8$ using a Sage code. Second, we present a conjecture on the ratio of the number of graphs in each subclass to the number of all graphs of order $n$ as $n$ approaches the infinity. Finally, as a first partial solution to the problem, we determine subclasses to which a path, a complete graph and a cycle graph of order $n\geq 1$ belong.

The number of $4$-cycles and the cyclomatic number of a finite simple graph
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. We show that, when $G$ is not bipartite, the number of $4$-cycles contained in $G$ is at most $\binom{m-n+1}{2}$. We further provide a short combinatorial proof of the bound $\binom{m-n+2}{2}$ which holds for bipartite graphs.

A Note on Construction of Dual-Hamiltonian Graphs
A connected simple graph is said dual-hamiltonian if its vertex set has a $2$-coloring such that each color class induces a tree. We call such a coloring a hamiltonian coloring. We prove that if $G$ is a graph with a certain type of hamiltonian coloring and $T$ is a tree, then $G\times T$ is also dual-hamiltonian having the same certain type of hamiltonian coloring. This result is used to constructed a class of dual-hamiltonian graphs, which includes the hypercubes and other multidimensional grids.

The Undirected Optical Indices of Complete $m$-ary Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
The routing and wavelength assignment problem arises from the investigation of optimal wavelength allocation in an optical network that employs Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). Consider an optical network that is represented by a connected, simple graph $G$. An all-to-all routing $R$ in $G$ is a set of paths connecting all pairs of vertices of $G$. The undirected optical index of $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ to guarantee the existence of a mapping $φ:R\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, such that $φ(P)\neqφ(P')$ if $P$ and $P'$ have common edge(s), over all possible routings $R$. A natural lower bound of the undirected optical index of $G$ is the (undirected) edge-forwarding index, which is defined to be the minimum of the maximum edge-load over all possible all-to-all routings. In this paper, we first derive the exact value of the optical index of the complete $m$-ary trees, and then investigate the gap between undirected optical and edge-forwarding indices.

We prove that$$\lceil ν_{2}(G)/2\rceil\leqβ(G)\leqν_2(G)-1,$$ for any connected simple graph $G$, with $|E(G)|>ν_2(G)$, and we give a characterization of simple connected graphs which attains the inequalities.

Graphs that contain multiply transitive matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite, undirected, connected, simple graph. We say that a matching $\mathcal{M}$ is a \textit{permutable $m$-matching} if $\mathcal{M}$ contains $m$ edges and the subgroup of $\text{Aut}(Γ)$ that fixes the matching $\mathcal{M}$ setwise allows the edges of $\mathcal{M}$ to be permuted in any fashion. A matching $\mathcal{M}$ is \textit{2-transitive} if the setwise stabilizer of $\mathcal{M}$ in $\text{Aut}(Γ)$ can map any ordered pair of distinct edges of $\mathcal{M}$ to any other ordered pair of distinct edges of $\mathcal{M}$. We provide constructions of graphs with a permutable matching; we show that, if $Γ$ is an arc-transitive graph that contains a permutable $m$-matching for $m \ge 4$, then the degree of $Γ$ is at least $m$; and, when $m$ is sufficiently large, we characterize the locally primitive, arc-transitive graphs of degree $m$ that contain a permutable $m$-matching. Finally, we classify the graphs that have a $2$-transitive perfect matching and also classify graphs that have a permutable perfect matching.
