On $(t,r)$ broadcast domination of directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A dominating set of a graph $G$ is a set of vertices that contains at least one endpoint of every edge on the graph. The domination number of $G$ is the order of a minimum dominating set of $G$. The $(t,r)$ broadcast domination is a generalization of domination in which a set of broadcasting vertices emits signals of strength $t$ that decrease by 1 as they traverse each edge, and we require that every vertex in the graph receives a cumulative signal of at least $r$ from its set of broadcasting neighbors. In this paper, we extend the study of $(t,r)$ broadcast domination to directed graphs. Our main result explores the interval of values obtained by considering the directed $(t,r)$ broadcast domination numbers of all orientations of a graph $G$. In particular, we prove that in the cases $r=1$ and $(t,r) = (2,2)$, for every integer value in this interval, there exists an orientation $\vec{G}$ of $G$ which has directed $(t,r)$ broadcast domination number equal to that value. We also investigate directed $(t,r)$ broadcast domination on the finite grid graph, the star graph, the infinite grid graph, and the infinite triangular lattice graph. We conclude with some directions for future study.

Universality for the directed configuration model: metric space convergence of the strongly connected components at criticality
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the strongly connected components (SCCs) of a uniform directed graph on $n$ vertices with i.i.d. in- and out-degree pairs distributed as $(D^-,D^+)$, with $\mathbb E[D^+]=\mathbb E[D^-]=μ$. We condition on equal total in- and out-degree. A phase transition for the emergence of a giant SCC is known to occur at the critical value $\mathbb E[D^-D^+] = μ$. We study the model at this critical value and, additionally, require that $\mathbb E[(D^-)^i(D^+)^j]<\infty$ for all $i+j\leq 3$, and for $(i,j)=(1,3)$ and $(i,j)=(3,1)$. We show that, under these conditions, the SCCs ranked by decreasing number of edges with distances rescaled by $n^{-1/3}$ converge in distribution to a sequence of finite strongly connected directed multigraphs with edge lengths, and that these are either $3$-regular or loops. The limit objects lie in a $3$-parameter family, which contains the scaling limit of the SCCs in the directed Erdős-Rényi model at criticality as found by Goldschmidt and Stephenson (2019). This is the first universality result for the scaling limit of a critical directed graph model and the first quantitative result on the directed configuration model at criticality. As a trivial consequence, the largest SCCs at criticality contain $Θ(n^{1/3})$ vertices and edges in probability, and the diameter of the directed graph at criticality is $Ω(n^{1/3})$ in probability. We use a metric on the space of weighted multigraphs in which two multigraphs are close if there are compatible isomorphisms between their vertex and edge sets which roughly preserve the edge lengths. We use the product topology on the sequence of multigraphs. Our method of proof involves a depth-first exploration of the directed graph, resulting in a spanning forest with additional identifications, of which we study the limit under rescaling.

A spectral theory for combinatorial dynamics
This article proposes a framework for the study of periodic maps $T$ from a (typically finite) set $X$ to itself when the set $X$ is equipped with one or more real- or complex-valued functions. The main idea, inspired by the time-evolution operator construction from ergodic theory, is the introduction of a vector space that contains the given functions and is closed under composition with $T$, along with a time-evolution operator on that vector space. I show that the invariant functions and 0-mesic functions span complementary subspaces associated respectively with the eigenvalue 1 and the other eigenvalues. Alongside other examples, I give an explicit description of the spectrum of the evolution operator when $X$ is the set of $k$-element multisets with elements in $\{0,1,\dots,n-1\}$, $T$ increments each element of a multiset by 1 mod $n$, and $g_i: X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ (with $1 \leq i \leq k$) maps a multiset to its $i$th smallest element.

On the $A_α$ spectral radius of strongly connected digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a digraph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$. Let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix with outdegrees of vertices of $G$. Nikiforov \cite{Niki} proposed to study the convex combinations of the adjacency matrix and diagonal matrix of the degrees of undirected graphs. Liu et al. \cite{LWCL} extended the definition to digraphs. For any real $α\in[0,1]$, the matrix $A_α(G)$ of a digraph $G$ is defined as $$A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$$ The largest modulus of the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$ is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$, denoted by $λ_α(G)$. This paper proves some extremal results about the spectral radius $λ_α(G)$ that generalize previous results about $λ_0(G)$ and $λ_{\frac{1}{2}}(G)$. In particular, we characterize the extremal digraph with the maximum (or minimum) $A_α$ spectral radius among all $\widetilde{\infty}$-digraphs and $\widetildeθ$-digraphs on $n$ vertices. Furthermore, we determine the digraphs with the second and the third minimum $A_α$ spectral radius among all strongly connected bicyclic digraphs. For $0\leqα\leq\frac{1}{2}$, we also determine the digraphs with the second, the third and the fourth minimum $A_α$ spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs on $n$ vertices. Finally, we characterize the digraph with the minimum $A_α$ spectral radius among all strongly connected bipartite digraphs which contain a complete bipartite subdigraph.

Every Steiner triple system contains an almost spanning d-ary hypertree
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we make a partial progress on the following conjecture: for every $μ>0$ and large enough $n$, every Steiner triple system $S$ on at least $(1+μ)n$ vertices contains every hypertree $T$ on $n$ vertices. We prove that the conjecture holds if $T$ is a perfect $d$-ary hypertree.

Large rainbow matchings in edge-colored graphs with given average color degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching in which no two edges have the same color. The color degree of a vertex v is the number of different colors on edges incident to v. Kritschgau [Electron. J. Combin. 27(2020)] studied the existence of rainbow matchings in edge-colored graph G with average color degree at least 2k, and proved some sufficient conditions for a rainbow marching of size k in G. The sufficient conditions include that |V(G)|>=12k^2+4k, or G is a properly edge-colored graph with |V(G)|>=8k. In this paper, we show that every edge-colored graph G with |V(G)|>=4k-4 and average color degree at least 2k-1 contains a rainbow matching of size k. In addition, we also prove that every strongly edge-colored graph G with average degree at least 2k-1 contains a rainbow matching of size at least k. The bound is sharp for complete graphs.

Rainbow spanning structures in graph and hypergraph systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the following rainbow version of subgraph containment problems in a family of (hyper)graphs, which generalizes the classical subgraph containment problems in a single host graph. For a collection $\textbf{G}=\{G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_{m}\}$ of not necessarily distinct $k$-graphs on the same vertex set $[n]$, a (sub)graph $H$ on $[n]$ is rainbow if there exists an injection $\varphi: E(H)\rightarrow[m]$ such that $e\in E(G_{\varphi(e)})$ for each $e\in E(H)$. Note that if $|E(H)|=m$, then $\varphi$ is a bijection and thus $H$ contains exactly one edge from each $G_i$. Our main results focus on rainbow clique-factors in (hyper)graph systems with minimum $d$-degree conditions. Specifically, we establish the following: (1) A rainbow analogue of an asymptotical version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem, namely, if $t\mid n$ and $δ(G_i)\geq(1-\frac{1}{t}+\varepsilon)n$ for each $i\in[\frac{n}{t}\binom{t}{2}]$, then $\textbf{G}$ contains a rainbow $K_t$-factor; (2) Essentially a minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph also forces rainbow perfect matchings in $k$-graph systems for $d\in[k-1]$. The degree assumptions in both results are asymptotically best possible (although the minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph is in general unknown). For (1) we also discuss two directed versions and a multipartite version. Finally, to establish these results, we in fact provide a general framework to attack this type of problems, which reduces it to subproblems with finitely many colors.

Stability for the Erdős-Rothschild problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a sequence $\mathbf{k} := (k_1,\ldots,k_s)$ of natural numbers and a graph $G$, let $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of $G$ with colours $1,\dots,s$ such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots,s\}$, the edges of colour $c$ contain no clique of order $k_c$. Write $F(n;\mathbf{k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases. In previous work with Yilma, we constructed a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log_2 F(n;\mathbf{k})/{n\choose 2}$ as $n$ tends to infinity and proved a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs $G$. In this paper we provide a sufficient condition on $\mathbf{k}$ which guarantees a general stability theorem for any graph $G$, describing the asymptotic structure of $G$ on $n$ vertices with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem. We apply our theorem to systematically recover existing stability results as well as all cases with $s=2$. The proof uses a novel version of symmetrisation on edge-coloured weighted multigraphs.

The spectral radius of graphs with no intersecting odd cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics 345 (2022) 112907 • View Publication • BIB
Let $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ be the graph with $s$ triangles and $k$ odd cycles of lengths $t_1,\ldots ,t_k\ge 5$ intersecting in exactly one common vertex. Recently, Hou, Qiu and Liu [Discrete Math. 341 (2018) 126--137], and Yuan [J. Graph Theory 89 (1) (2018) 26--39] determined independently the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we determine the graphs of order $n$ that attain the maximum spectral radius among all graphs containing no $H_{s,t_1,\ldots ,t_k}$ for $n$ large enough.

Unit gain graphs with two distinct eigenvalue and systems of lines in complex space
Published • View Publication • BIB
Since the introduction of the Hermitian adjacency matrix for digraphs, interest in so-called complex unit gain graphs has surged. In this work, we consider gain graphs whose spectra contain the minimum number of two distinct eigenvalues. Analogously to graphs with few distinct eigenvalues, a great deal of structural symmetry is required for a gain graph to attain this minimum. This allows us to draw a surprising parallel to well-studied systems of lines in complex space, through a natural correspondence to unit-norm tight frames. We offer a full classification of two-eigenvalue gain graphs with degree at most $4$, or with multiplicity at most $3$. Intermediate results include an extensive review of various relevant concepts related to lines in complex space, including SIC-POVMs, MUBs and geometries such as the Coxeter-Todd lattice, and many examples obtained as induced subgraphs by employing a technique parallel to the dismantling of association schemes. Finally, we touch on an innovative application of simulated annealing to find examples by computer.

Quantum partial automorphisms of finite graphs
The partial automorphisms of a graph $X$ having $N$ vertices are the bijections $σ:I\to J$ with $I,J\subset\{1,\ldots,N\}$ which leave invariant the edges. These bijections form a semigroup $\widetilde{G}(X)$, which contains the automorphism group $G(X)$. We discuss here the quantum analogue of this construction, with a definition and basic theory for the quantum semigroup of quantum partial automorphisms $\widetilde{G}^+(X)$, which contains both $G(X)$, and the quantum automorphism group $G^+(X)$. We comment as well on the case $N=\infty$, which is of particular interest, due to the fact that $\widetilde{G}^+(X)$ is well-defined, while its subgroup $G^+(X)$, not necessarily, at least with the currently known methods.

A SAT attack on higher dimensional Erdős--Szekeres numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A famous result by Erdős and Szekeres (1935) asserts that, for all $k,d \in \mathbb{N}$, there is a smallest integer $n = g^{(d)}(k)$ such that every set of at least $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in general position contains a $k$-gon, that is, a subset of $k$ points which is in convex position. In this article, we present a SAT model based on acyclic chirotopes (oriented matroids) to investigate Erdős--Szekeres numbers in small dimensions. To solve the SAT instances we use modern SAT solvers and all our unsatisfiability results are verified using DRAT certificates. We show $g^{(3)}(7) = 13$, $g^{(4)}(8) \le 13$, and $g^{(5)}(9) \le 13$, which are the first improvements for decades. For the setting of $k$-holes (i.e., $k$-gons with no other points in the convex hull), where $h^{(d)}(k)$ denotes the minimum number $n$ such that every set of at least $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in general position contains a $k$-hole, we show $h^{(3)}(7) \le 14$, $h^{(4)}(8) \le 13$, and $h^{(5)}(9) \le 13$. Moreover, all obtained bounds are sharp in the setting of acyclic chirotopes and we conjecture them to be sharp also in the original setting of point sets. As a byproduct, we verify previously known bounds. In particular, we present the first computer-assisted proof of the upper bound $h^{(2)}(6)\le g^{(2)}(9) \le 1717$ by Gerken (2008).

Line graphs of Multi-Graphs and the forbidden graph $E_6$
The line graph $Γ$ of a multi-graph $Δ$ is the graph whose vertices are the edges of $Δ$, where two such edges are adjacent if and only if they meet in a single vertex of $Δ$. We provide several characterizations of such line graphs and in particular show that a graph is a line graph if and only if it does not contain one of $33$ graphs, all of which correspond to bases of anisotropic vectors of a $6$-dimensional orthogonal geometry of $-$-type over a field with two elements, or, equivalently, to sets of $6$ generating reflections in the Weyl group of type $E_6$.
Strengthening Rodl's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
What can be said about the structure of graphs that do not contain an induced copy of some graph H? Rodl showed in the 1980s that every H-free graph has large parts that are very dense or very sparse. More precisely, let us say that a graph F on n vertices is c-restricted if either F or its complement has maximum degree at most cn. Rodl proved that for every graph H, and every c>0, every H-free graph G has a linear-sized set of vertices inducing a c-restricted graph. We strengthen Rodl's result as follows: for every graph H, and all c>0, every H-free graph can be partitioned into a bounded number of subsets inducing c-restricted graphs.

Pizza and 2-structures

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a Coxeter hyperplane arrangement in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. Assume that the negative of the identity map belongs to the associated Coxeter group $W$. Furthermore assume that the arrangement is not of type $A_1^n$. Let $K$ be a measurable subset of the Euclidean space with finite volume which is stable by the Coxeter group $W$ and let $a$ be a point such that $K$ contains the convex hull of the orbit of the point $a$ under the group $W$. In a previous article the authors proved the generalized pizza theorem: that the alternating sum over the chambers $T$ of $\mathcal{H}$ of the volumes of the intersections $T\cap(K+a)$ is zero. In this paper we give a dissection proof of this result. In fact, we lift the identity to an abstract dissection group to obtain a similar identity that replaces the volume by any valuation that is invariant under affine isometries. This includes the cases of all intrinsic volumes. Apart from basic geometry, the main ingredient is a theorem of the authors where we relate the alternating sum of the values of certain valuations over the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement to similar alternating sums for simpler subarrangements called $2$-structures introduced by Herb to study discrete series characters of real reduced groups.

Finding solutions with distinct variables to systems of linear equations over $\mathbb{F}_p$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let us fix a prime $p$ and a homogeneous system of $m$ linear equations $a_{j,1}x_1+\dots+a_{j,k}x_k=0$ for $j=1,\dots,m$ with coefficients $a_{j,i}\in\mathbb{F}_p$. Suppose that $k\geq 3m$, that $a_{j,1}+\dots+a_{j,k}=0$ for $j=1,\dots,m$ and that every $m\times m$ minor of the $m\times k$ matrix $(a_{j,i})_{j,i}$ is non-singular. Then we prove that for any (large) $n$, any subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of size $|A|> C\cdot Γ^n$ contains a solution $(x_1,\dots,x_k)\in A^k$ to the given system of equations such that the vectors $x_1,\dots,x_k\in A$ are all distinct. Here, $C$ and $Γ$ are constants only depending on $p$, $m$ and $k$ such that $Γ<p$. The crucial point here is the condition for the vectors $x_1,\dots,x_k$ in the solution $(x_1,\dots,x_k)\in A^k$ to be distinct. If we relax this condition and only demand that $x_1,\dots,x_k$ are not all equal, then the statement would follow easily from Tao's slice rank polynomial method. However, handling the distinctness condition is much harder, and requires a new approach. While all previous combinatorial applications of the slice rank polynomial method have relied on the slice rank of diagonal tensors, we use a slice rank argument for a non-diagonal tensor in combination with combinatorial and probabilistic arguments.
Disjoint Paths and Connected Subgraphs for H-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The well-known Disjoint Paths problem is to decide if a graph contains k pairwise disjoint paths, each connecting a different terminal pair from a set of k distinct pairs. We determine, with an exception of two cases, the complexity of the Disjoint Paths problem for $H$-free graphs. If $k$ is fixed, we obtain the $k$-Disjoint Paths problem, which is known to be polynomial-time solvable on the class of all graphs for every $k \geq 1$. The latter does no longer hold if we need to connect vertices from terminal sets instead of terminal pairs. We completely classify the complexity of $k$-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs for $H$-free graphs, and give the same almost-complete classification for Disjoint Connected Subgraphs for $H$-free graphs as for Disjoint Paths.

Component Edge Connectivity of Hypercube-like Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a generalization of the traditional connectivity, the g-component edge connectivity cλg(G) of a non-complete graph G is the minimum number of edges to be deleted from the graph G such that the resulting graph has at least g components. Hypercube-like networks (HL-networks for short) are obtained by manipulating some pairs of edges in hypercubes, which contain several famous interconnection networks such as twisted cubes, Mobius cubes, crossed cubes, locally twisted cubes. In this paper, we determine the (g + 1)-component edge connectivity of the n-dimensional HL-networks.

Edge coloring graphs with large minimum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is overfull if $|E(H)|>Δ(G)\lfloor |V(H)|/2 \rfloor$. Chetwynd and Hilton in 1985 conjectured that a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)>|V(G)|/3$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph. The 1-factorization conjecture is a special case of this overfull conjecture, which states that for even $n$, every regular $n$-vertex graph with degree at least about $n/2$ has a 1-factorization and was confirmed for large graphs in 2014. Supporting the overfull conjecture as well as generalizing the 1-factorization conjecture in an asymptotic way, in this paper, we show that for any given $0<\varepsilon <1$, there exists a positive integer $n_0$ such that the following statement holds: if $G$ is a graph on $2n\ge n_0$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(1+\varepsilon)n$, then $G$ has chromatic index $Δ(G)$ if and only if $G$ contains no overfull subgraph.

Matroids are not Ehrhart positive
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we disprove the conjectures asserting the positivity of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of matroid polytopes by De Loera, Haws and Köppe (2007) and of generalized permutohedra by Castillo and Liu (2015). We prove constructively that for every $n\geq 19$ there exist connected matroids on $n$ elements that are not Ehrhart positive. Also, we prove that for every $k\geq 3$ there exist connected matroids of rank $k$ that are not Ehrhart positive. Our proofs rely on our previous results on the geometric interpretation of the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation and our formulas for the Ehrhart polynomials of hypersimplices and minimal matroids. This allows us to give a precise expression for the Ehrhart polynomials of all sparse paving matroids, a class of matroids which is conjectured to be predominant and which contains the counterexamples arising from our construction.
