Chain enumeration, partition lattices and polynomials with only real roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentric subdivision of the boundary complex of the simplex is also included.

Toric Quasifolds
Published in Math. Intelligencer, 45 (2022), 133-138 • View PublicationBIB
Toric quasifolds are highly singular spaces that were first introduced in order to address, from the symplectic viewpoint, the longstanding open problem of extending the classical constructions of toric geometry to those simple convex polytopes that are not rational. We illustrate toric quasifolds, and their atlases, by describing some notable examples. We conclude with a number of considerations.

A Positive Answer to Bárány's Question on Face Numbers of Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Despite a full characterization of the face vectors of simple and simplicial polytopes, the face numbers of general polytopes are poorly understood. Around 1997, Bárány asked whether for all convex $d$-polytopes $P$ and all $0 \leq k \leq d-1$, $f_k(P) \geq \min\{f_0(P), f_{d-1}(P)\}$. We answer Bárány's question in the affirmative and prove a stronger statement: for all convex $d$-polytopes $P$ and all $0 \leq k \leq d-1$, \[ \frac{f_k(P)}{f_0(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose k} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose k}\biggr], \qquad \frac{f_k(P)}{f_{d-1}(P)} \geq \frac{1}{2}\biggl[{\lceil \frac{d}{2} \rceil \choose d-k-1} + {\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor \choose d-k-1}\biggr]. \] In the former, equality holds precisely when $k=0$ or when $k=1$ and $P$ is simple. In the latter, equality holds precisely when $k=d-1$ or when $k=d-2$ and $P$ is simplicial.

Convex polytopes in restricted point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2025:1, 27pp • View PublicationBIB
For a finite point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, denote by $\text{diam}(P)$ the ratio of the largest to the smallest distances between pairs of points in $P$. Let $c_{d, α}(n)$ be the largest integer $c$ such that any $n$-point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ in general position, satisfying $\text{diam}(P) < α\sqrt[d]{n}$, contains an $c$-point convex independent subset. We determine the asymptotics of $c_{d, α}(n)$ as $n \to \infty$ by showing the existence of positive constants $β= β(d, α)$ and $γ= γ(d)$ such that $βn^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}} \le c_{d, α}(n) \le γn^{\frac{d-1}{d+1}}$ for $α\geq 2$.

The Polyhedral Tree Complex
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 2(3) 2022 • View PublicationBIB
The tree complex is a simplicial complex defined in recent work of Belk, Lanier, Margalit, and Winarski with natural applications to mapping class groups and complex dynamics. In this article, we connect this setting with the study of certain convex polytopes: associahedra and cyclohedra. Specifically, we describe a characterization of these polytopes using planar embeddings of trees and show that the tree complex is the barycentric subdivision of a polyhedral cell complex for which the cells are products of associahedra and cyclohedra.

On the moments of moments of random matrices and Ehrhart polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been significant interest in studying the asymptotics of certain generalised moments, called the moments of moments, of characteristic polynomials of random Haar-distributed unitary and symplectic matrices, as the matrix size $N$ goes to infinity. These quantities depend on two parameters $k$ and $q$ and when both of them are positive integers it has been shown that these moments are in fact polynomials in the matrix size $N$. In this paper we classify the integer roots of these polynomials and moreover prove that the polynomials themselves satisfy a certain symmetry property. This confirms some predictions from the thesis of Bailey. The proof uses the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity for rational convex polytopes and certain bijections between lattice points in some polytopes.

Convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-colorable polytopes
The convex hulls of face-vertex incident vectors of 3-face-colorable convex polytopes are computed. It is found that every such convex hull is a $d$-polytope with $d+2$ or $d+3$ vertices. Utilizing Gale transform and Gale diagram, we calculate its combinatorial structure. Finally, a necessary and sufficient criterion for combinatorial equivalence of two such convex hulls is given.

Inscribed Tverberg-Type Partitions for Orbit Polytopes
Published in Mathematika 68 (2022) 1135-1152 • View PublicationBIB
Tverberg's theorem states that any set of $t(r,d)=(r-1)(d+1)+1$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be partitioned into $r$ subsets whose convex hulls have non-empty $r$-fold intersection. Moreover, generic collections of fewer points cannot be so divided. Extending earlier work of the first author, we show that one can nonetheless guarantee inscribed ``polytopal partitions" with specified symmetry conditions in many such circumstances. Namely, for any faithful and full--dimensional orthogonal representation $ρ\colon G\rightarrow O(d)$ of any order $r$ group $G$, we show that a generic set of $t(r,d)-d$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be partitioned into $r$ subsets so that there are $r$ points, one from each of the resulting convex hulls, which are the vertices of a convex $d$--polytope whose isometry group contains $G$ via the regular action afforded by the representation. As with Tverberg's theorem, the number of points is optimal for this. At one extreme, this gives polytopal partitions for all regular $r$--gons in the plane, as well as for three of the six regular 4--polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^4$. At the other extreme, one has polytopal partitions for $d$-polytopes on $r$ vertices with isometry group equal to $G$ whenever $G$ is the isometry group of a vertex--transitive $d$-polytope.
Intersection Bodies of Polytopes
Published in Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie, 63, 419-439 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the intersection body of a convex polytope using tools from combinatorics and real algebraic geometry. In particular, we show that the intersection body of a polytope is always a semialgebraic set and provide an algorithm for its computation. Moreover, we compute the irreducible components of the algebraic boundary and provide an upper bound for the degree of these components.

Lifting methods in mass partition problems
Many results in mass partitions are proved by lifting $\mathbb{R}^d$ to a higher-dimensional space and dividing the higher-dimensional space into pieces. We extend such methods to use lifting arguments to polyhedral surfaces. Among other results, we prove the existence of equipartitions of $d+1$ measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by parallel hyperplanes and of $d+2$ measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by concentric spheres. For measures whose supports are sufficiently well separated, we prove results where one can cut a fixed (possibly different) fraction of each measure either by parallel hyperplanes, concentric spheres, convex polyhedral surfaces of few facets, or convex polytopes with few vertices.

Capturing Polytopal Symmetries by Coloring the Edge-Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A general (convex) polytope $P\subset\mathbb R^d$ and its edge-graph $G_P$ can have very distinct symmetry properties. We construct a coloring (of the vertices and edges) of the edge-graph so that the combinatorial symmetry group of the colored edge-graph is isomorphic (in a natural way) to $\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathrm{GL}}(P)$, the group of linear symmetries of the polytope. We also construct an analogous coloring for $\mathrm{Aut}_{\mathrm{O}}(P)$, the group of orthogonal symmetries of $P$.

Volume of convex polytopes equals mixed volume of simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
This note provides a simple proof for the equality between the normalized volume of a convex polytope with $m$ vertices and the mixed volume of $m$ simplices and thus shows the seemingly restrictive problem of computing mixed volume of simplices is still at least as hard as computing volumes of convex polytopes.

The Signed (Total) Roman Domination Problem on some Classes of Planar Graphs -- Convex Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we deal with the calculation of the signed (total) Roman domination numbers, $γ_{sR}$ and $γ_{stR}$ respectively, on a few classes of planar graphs from the literature. We give proofs for the exact values of the numbers $γ_{sR}(A_n)$ and $γ_{sR}(R_n)$ as well as the numbers $γ_{stR}(S_n)$ and $γ_{stR}(T_n)$. For some other classes of planar graphs, such as $Q_n$, %$S_n"$ and $T_n"$, lower and upper bounds on $γ_{sR}$ are calculated and proved. %We give some open problems on the exact values of $γ_{sR}$ and $γ_{stR}$ for some classes of planar graphs.

Conic decomposition of a toric variety and its application to cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a \emph{conic sequence} of a convex polytope. It is a way of building up a polytope starting from a vertex and attaching faces one by one with certain regulations. We apply this to a toric variety to obtain an iterated cofibration structure on it. This allows us to prove several vanishing results in the rational cohomology of a toric variety and to calculate Poincaré polynomials for a large class of singular toric varieties.
An effective solution to convex $1$-body $N$-representability
Published • View PublicationBIB
From a geometric point of view, Pauli's exclusion principle defines a hypersimplex. This convex polytope describes the compatibility of $1$-fermion and $N$-fermion density matrices, therefore it coincides with the convex hull of the pure $N$-representable $1$-fermion density matrices. Consequently, the description of ground state physics through $1$-fermion density matrices may not necessitate the intricate pure state generalized Pauli constraints. In this article, we study the generalization of the $1$-body $N$-representability problem to ensemble states with fixed spectrum $\mathbf{w}$, in order to describe finite-temperature states and distinctive mixtures of excited states. By employing ideas from convex analysis and combinatorics, we present a comprehensive solution to the corresponding convex relaxation, thus circumventing the complexity of generalized Pauli constraints. In particular, we adapt and further develop tools such as symmetric polytopes, sweep polytopes, and Gale order. For both fermions and bosons, generalized exclusion principles are discovered, which we determine for any number of particles and dimension of the $1$-particle Hilbert space. These exclusion principles are expressed as linear inequalities satisfying hierarchies determined by the non-zero entries of $\mathbf{w}$. The two families of polytopes resulting from these inequalities are part of the new class of so-called lineup polytopes.
Edge Resolvability for Circular Ladder of Heptagons
A set $\mathbb{Y}$ of elements (vertices or edges) in space is said to be a $generator$ of a metric space if each element of the space is recognized by its distances from the elements of $\mathbb{Y}$, uniquely. The generator with minimum cardinality is known as the $basis$ of the metric space, and this cardinality is the $dimension$ of the given space. In this article, we further discuss these notions with respect to a heptagonal circular ladder. We show that for a heptagonal circular ladder $Γ_{n}$, the edge metric dimension is three and find that it equals its metric dimension. We also introduce a new family of the convex polytope graph (denoted by $Δ_{n}$) from a heptagonal circular ladder and find its metric dimension. Furthermore, we prove that the minimum generator (metric and edge metric) are independent for all of these families of the convex polytopes.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of flag varieties and marked chain-order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Marked chain-order polytopes are convex polytopes constructed from a marked poset, which give a discrete family relating a marked order polytope with a marked chain polytope. In this paper, we consider the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset of type A, and realize the associated marked chain-order polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies of the flag variety. Our realization connects previous realizations of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies in a uniform way. As an application, we prove that the flag variety degenerates into the irreducible normal projective toric variety corresponding to a marked chain-order polytope. We also construct a specific basis of an irreducible highest weight representation which is naturally parametrized by the set of lattice points in a marked chain-order polytope.

On Fault-Tolerant Resolvability of Double Antiprism and its related Graphs
For a connected graph $Γ=(V,E)$, a subset $R$ of ordered vertices in $V$ is said to be a resolving set in $Γ$, if the vector of distances to the vertices in $R$ is unique for each $u^{i}\in V(Γ)$. The metric dimension of $Γ$ is the minimum cardinality of such a set $R$. If $R\setminus \{u^{i}\}$ is still a resolving set $\forall$ $u^{i}\in R$, then $R$ is called a fault-tolerant resolving set (FTRS) for $Γ$ and its least cardinality is the fault-tolerant metric dimension (FTMD) of $Γ$. In this article, we introduce the concept of an independent fault-tolerant resolving set (IFTRS) and investigate it for several well-known graphs. We also show that the FTMD is four for three closely related families of convex polytopes available in the literature (viz., double antiprism $\mathbb{A}_{n}$, $S_{n}$, and $T_{n}$).

On combinatorics of Voronoi polytopes for perturbations of the dual root lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Voronoi conjecture on parallelohedra claims that for every convex polytope $P$ that tiles Euclidean $d$-dimensional space with translations there exists a $d$-dimensional lattice such that $P$ and the Voronoi polytope of this lattice are affinely equivalent. The Voronoi conjecture is still open for the general case but it is known that some combinatorial restriction for the face structure of $P$ ensure that the Voronoi conjecture holds for $P$. In this paper we prove that if $P$ is the Voronoi polytope of one of the dual root lattices $\mathsf{D}_d^*$, $\mathsf{E}_6^*$, $\mathsf{E}_7^*$ or $\mathsf{E}_8^*=\mathsf{E}_8$ or their small perturbations, then every parallelohedron combinatorially equivalent to $P$ in strong sense satisfies the Voronoi conjecture.
