Complex Hadamard matrices attached to even orthogonal schemes of class 4
A complex Hadamard matrix is a square matrix W with complex entries of absolute value 1 satisfying WW*=nI, where * stands for the Hermitian transpose and I is the identity matrix of order n. In this paper, we give constructions of complex Hadamard matrices in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a certain 4-class symmetric association scheme. Moreover, we determine the Nomura algebras to show that the resulting matrices are not decomposable into nontrivial generalized tensor products.

Boolean graphs are unmixed and vertex decomposable
Published in Communications in Algebra 2018 • View PublicationBIB
For each Boolean graph $B_n$, it is proved that both $B_n$ and its complement graph $\overline{B_n}$ are vertex decomposable. It is also proved that $B_n$ is an unmixed graph, thus it is also Cohen-Macaulay.

Stability of higher-dimensional interval decomposable persistence modules
The algebraic stability theorem for $\mathbb{R}$-persistence modules is a fundamental result in topological data analysis. We present a stability theorem for $n$-dimensional rectangle decomposable persistence modules up to a constant $(2n-1)$ that is a generalization of the algebraic stability theorem, and also has connections to the complexity of calculating the interleaving distance. The proof given reduces to a new proof of the algebraic stability theorem with $n=1$. We give an example to show that the bound cannot be improved for $n=2$. We apply the same technique to prove stability results for zigzag modules and Reeb graphs, reducing the previously known bounds to a constant that cannot be improved, settling these questions.

An Exact Enumeration of Distance-Hereditary Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Distance-hereditary graphs form an important class of graphs, from the theoretical point of view, due to the fact that they are the totally decomposable graphs for the split-decomposition. The previous best enumerative result for these graphs is from Nakano et al. (J. Comp. Sci. Tech., 2007), who have proven that the number of distance-hereditary graphs on $n$ vertices is bounded by ${2^{\lceil 3.59n\rceil}}$. In this paper, using classical tools of enumerative combinatorics, we improve on this result by providing an exact enumeration of distance-hereditary graphs, which allows to show that the number of distance-hereditary graphs on $n$ vertices is tightly bounded by ${(7.24975\ldots)^n}$---opening the perspective such graphs could be encoded on $3n$ bits. We also provide the exact enumeration and asymptotics of an important subclass, the 3-leaf power graphs. Our work illustrates the power of revisiting graph decomposition results through the framework of analytic combinatorics.

More indecomposable polyhedra
We apply combinatorial methods to a geometric problem: the classification of polytopes, in terms of Minkowski decomposability. Various properties of skeletons of polytopes are exhibited, each sufficient to guarantee indecomposability of a significant class of polytopes. We illustrate further the power of these techniques, compared with the traditional method of examining triangular faces, with several applications. In any dimension $d\neq 2$, we show that of all the polytopes with $d^2+\frac{d}{2}$ or fewer edges, only one is decomposable. In 3 dimensions, we complete the classification, in terms of decomposability, of the 260 combinatorial types of polyhedra with 15 or fewer edges.
Shedding vertices of vertex decomposable graphs
We focus our attention on well-covered graphs that are vertex decomposable. We show that for many known families of these vertex decomposable graphs, the set of shedding vertices forms a dominating set. We then construct three new infinite families of well-covered graphs, none of which have this property. We use these results to provide a minimal counterexample to a conjecture of Villarreal regarding Cohen-Macaulay graphs.

Variance of additive functions defined on random assemblies
An inequality for the variance of an additive function defined on random decomposable structures, called assemblies, is established. The result generalizes estimates obtained earlier in the cases of permutations and mappings of a finite set into itself. It is analogous to the Turán-Kubilius inequality for additive number-theoretic functions.
Decomposing Cubic Graphs into Connected Subgraphs of Size Three
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $S=\{K_{1,3},K_3,P_4\}$ be the set of connected graphs of size 3. We study the problem of partitioning the edge set of a graph $G$ into graphs taken from any non-empty $S'\subseteq S$. The problem is known to be NP-complete for any possible choice of $S'$ in general graphs. In this paper, we assume that the input graph is cubic, and study the computational complexity of the problem of partitioning its edge set for any choice of $S'$. We identify all polynomial and NP-complete problems in that setting, and give graph-theoretic characterisations of $S'$-decomposable cubic graphs in some cases.

On Generalizations of Cycles and Chordality to Hypergraphs from an Algebraic Viewpoint
Published in Algebra Colloquium 24:4 (2017) 611-624 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the notion of chordality and cycles in hypergraphs from a commutative algebraic point of view. The corresponding concept of chordality in commutative algebra is having a linear resolution. However, there is no unified definition for cycle or chordality in hypergraphs in the literature, so we consider several generalizations of these notions and study their algebraic interpretations. In particular, we investigate the relationship between chordality and having linear quotients in some classes of hypergraphs. Also we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is a hypergraph such that $\langle \mathcal{C} \rangle$ is a vertex decomposable simplicial complex or $I(\bar{\mathcal{C}})$ is squarefree stable, then $\mathcal{C}$ is chordal according to one of the most promising definitions.

On graphs decomposable into induced matchings of linear sizes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We call a graph $G$ an $(r,t)$-Ruzsa-Szemerédi graph if its edge set can be partitioned into $t$ edge-disjoint induced matchings, each of size $r$. These graphs were introduced in 1978 and has been extensively studied since then. In this paper, we consider the case when $r=cn$. For $c>1/4$, we determine the maximum possible $t$ which is a constant depending only on $c$. On the other hand, when $c=1/4$, there could be as many as $Ω(\log n)$ induced matchings. We prove that this bound is tight up to a constant factor. Finally, when $c$ is fixed strictly between $1/5$ and $1/4$, we give a short proof that the number $t$ of induced matchings is $O(n/\log n)$. We are also able to further improve the upper bound to $o(n/\log n)$ for fixed $c> 1/4-b$ for some positive constant $b$.

On the combinatorial structure of 0/1-matrices representing nonobtuse simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 0/1-simplex is the convex hull of n+1 affinely independent vertices of the unit n-cube I^n. It is nonobtuse if none its dihedral angles is obtuse, and acute if additionally none of them is right. Acute 0/1-simplices in I^n can be represented by 0/1-matrices P of size n x n whose Gramians have an inverse that is strictly diagonally dominant, with negative off-diagonal entries. In this paper, we will prove that the positive part D of the transposed inverse of P is doubly stochastic and has the same support as P. The negated negative part C of P^-T is strictly row-substochastic and its support is complementary to that of D, showing that P^-T=D-C has no zero entries and has positive row sums. As a consequence, for each facet F of an acute 0/1-facet S there exists at most one other acute 0/1-simplex T in I^n having F as a facet. We call T the acute neighbor of S at F. If P represents a 0/1-simplex that is merely nonobtuse, P^-T can have entries equal to zero. Its positive part D is still doubly stochastic, but its support may be strictly contained in the support of P. This allows P to be partly decomposable. In theory, this might cause a nonobtuse 0/1-simplex S to have several nonobtuse neighbors at each of its facets. Next, we study nonobtuse 0/1-simplices S having a partly decomposable matrix representation P. We prove that such a simplex also has a block diagonal matrix representation with at least two diagonal blocks, and show that a nonobtuse simplex with partly decomposable matrix representation can be split in mutually orthogonal fully indecomposable simplicial facets whose dimensions add up to n. Using this insight, we are able to extend the one neighbor theorem for acute simplices to a larger class of nonobtuse simplices.

Shellability, vertex decomposability, and lexicographical products of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate when the independence complex of $G[H]$, the lexicographical product of two graphs $G$ and $H$, is either vertex decomposable or shellable. As an application, we construct an infinite family of graphs with the property that every graph in this family has the property that the independence complex of each graph is shellable, but not vertex decomposable.
Independence complexes of well-covered circulant graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the independence complexes of families of well-covered circulant graphs discovered by Boros-Gurvich-Milanič, Brown-Hoshino, and Moussi. Because these graphs are well-covered, their independence complexes are pure simplicial complexes. We determine when these pure complexes have extra combinatorial (e.g. vertex decomposable, shellable) or topological (e.g. Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum) structure. We also provide a table of all well-covered circulant graphs on 16 or less vertices, and for each such graph, determine if it is vertex decomposable, shellable, Cohen-Macaulay, and/or Buchsbaum. A highlight of this search is an example of a graph whose independence complex is shellable but not vertex decomposable.
On well-covered, vertex decomposable and Cohen-Macaulay graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. If $G$ is a König graph or $G$ is a graph without 3-cycles and 5-cycle, we prove that the following conditions are equivalent: $Δ_{G}$ is pure shellable, $R/I_Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay, $G$ is unmixed vertex decomposable graph and $G$ is well-covered with a perfect matching of König type $e_{1},...,e_{g}$ without square with two $e_i$'s. We characterize well-covered graphs without 3-cycles, 5-cycles and 7-cycles. Also, we study when graphs without 3-cycles and 5-cycles are vertex decomposable or shellable. Furthermore, we give some properties and relations between critical, extendables and shedding vertices. Finally, we characterize unicyclic graphs with each one of the following properties: unmixed, vertex decomposable, shellable and Cohen-Macaulay.

Critical exponents of graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 139 (2016), 30-58 • View PublicationBIB
The study of entrywise powers of matrices was originated by Loewner in the pursuit of the Bieberbach conjecture. Since the work of FitzGerald and Horn (1977), it is known that $A^{\circ α} := (a_{ij}^α)$ is positive semidefinite for every entrywise nonnegative $n \times n$ positive semidefinite matrix $A = (a_{ij})$ if and only if $α$ is a positive integer or $α\geq n-2$. This surprising result naturally extends the Schur product theorem, and demonstrates the existence of a sharp phase transition in preserving positivity. In this paper, we study when entrywise powers preserve positivity for matrices with structure of zeros encoded by graphs. To each graph is associated an invariant called its "critical exponent", beyond which every power preserves positivity. In our main result, we determine the critical exponents of all chordal/decomposable graphs, and relate them to the geometry of the underlying graphs. We then examine the critical exponent of important families of non-chordal graphs such as cycles and bipartite graphs. Surprisingly, large families of dense graphs have small critical exponents that do not depend on the number of vertices of the graphs.

Triangle Decompositions of Planar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A multigraph G is triangle decomposable if its edge set can be partitioned into subsets, each of which induces a triangle of G, and rationally triangle decomposable if its triangles can be assigned rational weights such that for each edge e of G, the sum of the weights of the triangles that contain e equals 1. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for a planar multigraph to be triangle decomposable. We also show that if a simple planar graph is rationally triangle decomposable, then it has such a decomposition using only weights 0,1 and 1/2. This result provides a characterization of rationally triangle decomposable simple planar graphs. Finally, if G is a multigraph with the complete graph of order 4 as underlying graph, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the multiplicities of its edges for G to be triangle and rationally triangle decomposable.
Blow-up algebras, determinantal ideals, and Dedekind-Mertens-like formulas
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that the initial ideals correspond to vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, and we determine their Hilbert functions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. As a consequence, we find explicit minimal reductions for all Ferrers and many specialized Ferrers ideals, as well as their reduction numbers. These results can be viewed as extensions of the classical Dedekind-Mertens formula for the content of the product of two polynomials.

Short catalog of plane ten-edge trees
A type is the set of all pairwise nonisotopic binary trees with the same passport. A type is called decomposable, if it is a union of several Galois orbits. In this work we present the list of all passports of plane binary trees with ten edges and the list of all Galois orbits.

Complex Hadamard matrices contained in a Bose-Mesner algebra
Published in Special Matrices 3 (2015), 91-110 • View PublicationBIB
A complex Hadamard matrix is a square matrix H with complex entries of absolute value 1 satisfying $HH^*= nI$, where $*$ stands for the Hermitian transpose and I is the identity matrix of order $n$. In this paper, we first determine the image of a certain rational map from the $d$-dimensional complex projective space to $\mathbb{C}^{d(d+1)/2}$. Applying this result with $d=3$, we give constructions of complex Hadamard matrices, and more generally, type-II matrices, in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a certain 3-class symmetric association scheme. In particular, we recover the complex Hadamard matrices of order 15 found by Ada Chan. We compute the Haagerup sets to show inequivalence of resulting type-II matrices, and determine the Nomura algebras to show that the resulting matrices are not decomposable into generalized tensor products.
A-priori Upper Bounds for the Set Covering Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a new bound obtained with the probabilistic method for the solution of the Set Covering problem with unit costs. The bound is valid for problems of fixed dimension, thus extending previous similar asymptotic results, and it depends only on the number of rows of the coefficient matrix and the row densities. We also consider the particular case of matrices that are \textit{almost} block decomposable, and show how the bound may improve according to the particular decomposition adopted. Such final result may provide interesting indications for comparing different matrix decomposition strategies.
