Hankel determinants of a Sturmian sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $τ$ be the substitution $1\to 101$ and $0\to 1$ on the alphabet $\{0,1\}$. The fixed point of $τ$ leading by 1, denoted by $\mathbf{s}$, is a Sturmian sequence. We first give a characterization of $\mathbf{s}$ using $f$-representation. Then we show that the distribution of zeros in the determinants induces a partition of integer lattices in the first quadrant. Combining those properties, we give the explicit values of the Hankel determinants $H_{m,n}$ of $\mathbf{s}$ for all $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge 1$.

The Varchenko Matrix for Dehyperplane Arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article computes the Varchenko determinant of dehyperplane arrangements which are generalizations of pseudohyperplane arrangements. But unlike those latter, they are defined on a real manifold, and it is not always possible to obtain a central dehyperplane arrangement by coning. This article also studies the solution space of a linear system defined from a dehyperplane arrangement. That equation system was first introduced by Aguiar and Mahajan for central hyperplane arrangements.

Generating functions for monomial characters of wreath products $\mathbb Z/d \mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.

Double Grothendieck polynomials and colored lattice models
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN; art. ID rnaa327 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We construct an integrable colored six-vertex model whose partition function is a double Grothendieck polynomial. This gives an integrable systems interpretation of bumpless pipe dreams and recent results of Weigandt [arXiv:2003.07342] relating double Grothendieck polynomias with bumpless pipe dreams. For vexillary permutations, we then construct a new model that we call the semidual version model. We use our semidual model and the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai to given a new proof that double Grothendieck polynomials for vexillary permutations are equal to flagged factorial Grothendieck polynomials. Taking the stable limit of double Grothendieck polynomials, we obtain a new proof that the stable limit is a factorial Grothendieck polynomial as defined by McNamara. The states of our semidual model naturally correspond to families of nonintersecting lattice paths, where we can then use the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma to give a determinant formula for double Schubert polynomials corresponding to vexillary permutations.

On the Okounkov-Olshanski formula for standard tableaux of skew shapes
Published in Comb. Theory 2(1) (2022), #1 • View PublicationBIB
The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

The Hermitian Jacobi process: simplified formula for the moments and application to optical fibers MIMO channels
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a change of basis in the algebra of symmetric functions, we compute the moments of the Hermitian Jacobi process. After a careful arrangement of the terms and the evaluation of the determinant of an `almost upper-triangular' matrix, we end up with a moment formula which is considerably simpler than the one derived in \cite{Del-Dem}. As an application, we propose the Hermitian Jacobi process as a dynamical model for optical fibers MIMO channels and compute its Shannon capacity for small enough power at the transmitter. Moreover, when the size of the Hermitian Jacobi process is larger than the moment order, our moment formula may be written as a linear combination of balanced terminating ${}_4F_3$-series evaluated at unit argument.

Determinants of binary matrices achieve every integral value up to $Ω(2^n/n)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work shows that the smallest natural number $d_n$ that is not the determinant of some $n\times n$ binary matrix is at least $c\,2^n/n$ for $c=1/201$. That same quantity naturally lower bounds the number of distinct integers $D_n$ which can be written as the determinant of some $n\times n$ binary matrix. This asymptotically improves the previous result of $d_n=Ω(1.618^n)$ and slightly improves the previous result of $D_n\ge 2^n/g(n)$ for a particular $g(n)=ω(n^2)$ function.

Standard Monomials of 1-Skeleton Ideals of Graphs and Their Signless Laplace Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a (multi) graph on the vertex set $V=\{0,1,\ldots ,n\}$ with root $0$. The $G$-parking function ideal $\mathcal{M}_G$ is a monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $R=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots ,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$ such that $\dim_{\mathbb K}\left(\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G}\right)=\det\left(\widetilde{L}_G\right)$, where $\widetilde{L}_G$ is the truncated Laplace matrix of $G$ and $\det\left(\widetilde L_G\right)$ is the determinant of $\widetilde L_G$. In other words, standard monomials of the Artinian quotient $\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G}$ correspond bijectively with the spanning trees of $G$. For $0\leq k\leq n-1$, the $k$-skeleton ideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}$ of $G$ is the monomial subideal $\mathcal{M}_G^{(k)}=\left\langle m_A:\emptyset\neq A\subseteq[n]\text{ and }|A|\leq k+1\right\rangle$ of the $G$-parking function ideal $\mathcal{M}_G=\left\langle m_A : \emptyset \neq A\subseteq[n]\right\rangle\subseteq R$. For a simple graph $G$, Dochtermann conjectured that $\dim_{\mathbb K}\left(\frac{R}{\mathcal{M}_G^{(1)}}\right)\geq\det\left(\widetilde{Q}_G\right)$, where $\widetilde Q_G$ is the truncated signless Laplace matrix of $G$. We show that Dochtermann conjecture holds for any (simple or multi) graph $G$ on $V$.

On the orbits associated with the Collatz conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is based upon previous work by Sousa Ramos and his collaborators. They first prove that the existence of only one orbit associated with the Collatz conjecture is equivalent to the determinant of each matrix of a certain sequence of matrices to have the same value. These matrices are called Collatz matrices. The second step in their work would be to calculate this determinant for each of the Collatz matrices. Having calculated this determinant for the first few terms of the sequence of matrices, their plan was to prove the determinant of the current term equals the determinant of the previous one. Unfortunately, they could not prove it for the cases where the dimensions of the matrices are 26+54l or 44+54l, where l is a positive integer. In the current article we improve on these results.

The explicit formula for Gauss-Jordan elimination and error analysis
The explicit formula for the elements of the successive intermediate matrices of the Gauss-Jordan elimination procedure for the solution of systems of linear equations is applied to error analysis. Stability conditions in terms of relative uncertainty and size of determinants are given such that the Gauss-Jordan procedure leads to a solution respecting the original imprecisions in the right-hand member. The solution is the same as given by Cramer's Rule. Imprecisions are modelled by scalar neutrices, which are convex groups of (nonstandard) real numbers. The resulting calculation rules extend informal error calculus, and permit to keep track of the errors at every stage.

Combinatorial Proof of Selberg's Integral Formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of Selberg's integral formula. We start by giving a bijective proof of a Theorem about the number of topological orders of a certain related directed graph. Selberg's Integral Formula then follows by induction. This solves a problem posed by R. Stanley in 2008. Our proof is based on Andersons analytic proof of the formula. As part of the proof we show a further generalisation of the generalised Vandermonde determinant.

Some observations on the Rueppel sequence and associated Hankel determinants
Starting with a definition based on the Catalan numbers, we carry out an empirical study of the Rueppel sequence. We use the Hankel transform as the main technique. By means of this transform we find links to such sequences as the Jacobi sequence and the paper-folding sequence. We also study several number arrays defined by this sequence, which are analogs of the important Catalan triangles of combinatorics. We identify a sequence related to the Golay-Rudin-Shapiro sequence that plays a fundamental role in linking the Hankel transforms of the paper with classical sequences. Examples are given where certain privileged permutations appearing in the Leibnitz formula for determinants have a special role.

Petrie symmetric functions
Published in Shortened version in: Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 5, pp. 947-1013 • View PublicationBIB
For any positive integer $k$ and nonnegative integer $m$, we consider the symmetric function $G\left( k,m\right)$ defined as the sum of all monomials of degree $m$ that involve only exponents smaller than $k$. We call $G\left( k,m\right)$ a "Petrie symmetric function" in honor of Flinders Petrie, as the coefficients in its expansion in the Schur basis are determinants of Petrie matrices (and thus belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $ by a classical result of Gordon and Wilkinson). More generally, we prove a Pieri-like rule for expanding a product of the form $G\left( k,m\right) \cdot s_μ$ in the Schur basis whenever $μ$ is a partition; all coefficients in this expansion belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $. We also show that $G\left( k,1\right) ,G\left( k,2\right) ,G\left( k,3\right) ,\ldots$ form an algebraically independent generating set for the symmetric functions when $1-k$ is invertible in the base ring, and we prove a conjecture of Liu and Polo about the expansion of $G\left( k,2k-1\right)$ in the Schur basis.
Maximizing Determinants under Matroid Constraints
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given vectors $v_1,\dots,v_n\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and a matroid $M=([n],I)$, we study the problem of finding a basis $S$ of $M$ such that $\det(\sum_{i \in S}v_i v_i^\top)$ is maximized. This problem appears in a diverse set of areas such as experimental design, fair allocation of goods, network design, and machine learning. The current best results include an $e^{2k}$-estimation for any matroid of rank $k$ and a $(1+ε)^d$-approximation for a uniform matroid of rank $k\ge d+\frac dε$, where the rank $k\ge d$ denotes the desired size of the optimal set. Our main result is a new approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends only on the dimension $d$ of the vectors and not on the size $k$ of the output set. In particular, we show an $(O(d))^{d}$-estimation and an $(O(d))^{d^3}$-approximation for any matroid, giving a significant improvement over prior work when $k\gg d$. Our result relies on the existence of an optimal solution to a convex programming relaxation for the problem which has sparse support; in particular, no more than $O(d^2)$ variables of the solution have fractional values. The sparsity results rely on the interplay between the first-order optimality conditions for the convex program and matroid theory. We believe that the techniques introduced to show sparsity of optimal solutions to convex programs will be of independent interest. We also give a randomized algorithm that rounds a sparse fractional solution to a feasible integral solution to the original problem. To show the approximation guarantee, we utilize recent works on strongly log-concave polynomials and show new relationships between different convex programs studied for the problem. Finally, we use the estimation algorithm and sparsity results to give an efficient deterministic approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends solely on the dimension $d$.

Latin Hypercubes and Cellular Automata
Published • View PublicationBIB
Latin squares and hypercubes are combinatorial designs with several applications in statistics, cryptography and coding theory. In this paper, we generalize a construction of Latin squares based on bipermutive cellular automata (CA) to the case of Latin hypercubes of dimension $k>2$. In particular, we prove that linear bipermutive CA (LBCA) yielding Latin hypercubes of dimension $k>2$ are defined by sequences of invertible Toeplitz matrices with partially overlapping coefficients, which can be described by a specific kind of regular de Bruijn graph induced by the support of the determinant function. Further, we derive the number of $k$-dimensional Latin hypercubes generated by LBCA by counting the number of paths of length $k-3$ on this de Bruijn graph.
A proof of Anđelić-Fonseca conjectures on the determinant of some Toeplitz matrices and their generalization
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a proof of determinant of special nonsymmetric Toeplitz matrices conjectured by Anđelić and Fonseca in \cite{andjelic2020some}. A proof is also demonstrated for a more general theorem. The two conjectures are therefore just two possible results, under two specific settings. Numerical examples validating the theorem are provided.

A determinantal expression and a recursive relation of the Delannoy numbers
Published in Acta Universitatis Sapientiae Mathematica vol. 13, no. 2, 442--449 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, by a general and fundamental, but non-extensively circulated, formula for derivatives of a ratio of two differentiable functions and by a recursive relation of the Hessenberg determinant, the author finds a new determinantal expression and a new recursive relation of the Delannoy numbers. Consequently, the author derives a recursive relation for computing central Delannoy numbers in terms of related Delannoy numbers.

Determinant Identities for Toeplitz-Hessenberg Matrices with Tribonacci Number Entries
In this paper, we evaluate determinants of some families of Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrices having tribonacci number entries. These determinant formulas may also be expressed equivalently as identities that involve sums of products of multinomial coefficients and tribonacci numbers. In particular, we establish a connection between the tribonacci and the Fibonacci and Padovan sequences via Toeplitz-Hessenberg determinants. We then obtain, by combinatorial arguments, extensions of our determinant formulas in terms of generalized tribonacci sequences satisfying an r-th order recurrence of a more general form with the appropriate initial conditions, where r>2 is arbitrary.

Schur Polynomials through Lindström Gessel Viennot Lemma
In this article, we use Lindström Gessel Viennot Lemma to give a short, combinatorial, visualizable proof of the identity of Schur polynomials -- the sum of monomials of Young tableaux equals to the quotient of determinants. As a by-product, we have a proof of Vandermonde determinant without words. We also prove the cauchy identity. In the remarks, we discuss factorial Schur polynomials, dual Cauchy identity and the relation beteen Newton interpolation formula.

Flagged Schur polynomial duality via a lattice path bijection
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 30(1) (2023) P1.5 • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves an identity between flagged Schur polynomials, giving a duality between row flags and column flags. This identity generalises both the binomial determinant duality theorem due to Gessel and Viennot and the symmetric function duality theorem due to Aitken. As corollaries we obtain the lifts of the binomial determinant duality theorem to $q$-binomial coefficients and to symmetric polynomials. Our method is a path counting argument on a novel lattice generalising that used by Gessel and Viennot.
