Isomonodromic tau functions on a torus as Fredholm determinants, and charged partitions

We prove that the isomonodromic tau function on a torus with Fuchsian singularities and generic monodromies in $GL(N,\mathbb{C})$ can be written in terms of a Fredholm determinant of Cauchy-Plemelj operators. We further show that the minor expansion of this Fredholm determinant is described by a series labeled by charged partitions. As an example, we show that in the case of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ this combinatorial expression takes the form of a dual Nekrasov-Okounkov partition function, or equivalently of a free fermion conformal block on the torus. Based on these results, we also propose a definition of the tau function of the Riemann-Hilbert problem on a torus with generic jump on the A-cycle.

We prove that the maximum determinant of an $n \times n $ matrix, with entries in $\{0,1\}$ and at most $n+k$ non-zero entries, is at most $2^{k/3}$, which is best possible when $k$ is a multiple of 3. This result solves a conjecture of Bruhn and Rautenbach. We also obtain an upper bound on the number of perfect matchings in $C_4$-free bipartite graphs based on the number of edges, which, in the sparse case, improves on the classical Bregman's inequality for permanents. This bound is tight, as equality is achieved by the graph formed by vertex disjoint union of 6-vertex cycles.
Green functions of Energized complexes
If h is a ring-valued function on a simplicial complex G we can define two matrices L and g, where the matrix entries are the h energy of homoclinic intersections. We know that the sum over all h values on G is equal to the sum of the Green matrix entries g(x,y). We also have already seen that that the determinants of L or g are both the product of the h(x). In the case where h(x) is the parity of dimension, the sum of the energy values was the standard Euler characteristic and the determinant was a unit. If h(x) was the unit in the ring then L,g are integral quadratic forms which are isospectral and inverse matrices of each other. We prove here that the quadratic energy expression summing over all pairs h(x)^* h(y) of intersecting sets is a signed sum of squares of Green function entries. The quadratic energy expression is Wu characteristic in the case when h is dimension parity. For general h, the quadratic energy expression resembles an Ising Heisenberg type interaction. The conjugate of g is the inverse of L if h takes unit values in a normed ring or in the group of unitary operators in an operator algebra.
A Short Note on Asymptotic Enumeration of Contingency Tables with Non-Uniform Margins
In this short note, we compute the precise asymptotics for the number of contingency tables with non-uniform margins. More precisely, for parameter $n,δ, B,C>0$, we consider the set of matrices whose first $[n^δ]$ rows and columns have sum $[BCn]$ and the rest $n$ rows and columns have sum $[Cn]$. We compute the precise asymptotics of the cardinality of this set when $B<B_c=1+\sqrt{1+1/C}$ using the maximal entropy methods developed by Barvinok and Hartigan. The only contribution of this note is a detailed expansion of the determinant of quadratic forms in asymptotic formulas.
Bilinear expansions of lattices of KP $τ$-functions in BKP $τ$-functions: a fermionic approach

We derive a bilinear expansion expressing elements of a lattice of KP $τ$-functions, labelled by partitions, as a sum over products of pairs of elements of an associated lattice of BKP $τ$-functions, labelled by strict partitions. This generalizes earlier results relating determinants and Pfaffians of minors of skew symmetric matrices, with applications to Schur functions and Schur $Q$-functions. It is deduced using the representations of KP and BKP $τ$-functions as vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of products of fermionic operators of charged and neutral type, respectively. The lattice is generated by insertion of products of pairs of charged creation and annihilation operators. The result follows from expanding the product as a sum of monomials in the neutral fermionic generators and applying a factorization theorem for VEV's of products of operators in the mutually commuting subalgebras. Applications include the case of inhomogeneous polynomial $τ$-functions of KP and BKP type.
Determinants and Limit Systems in some Idempotent and Non-Associative Algebraic Structure

This paper considers an idempotent and symmetrical algebraic structure as well as some closely related concept. A special notion of determinant is introduced and a Cramer formula is derived for a class of limit systems derived from the Hadamard matrix product and we give the algebraic form of a sequence of hyperplanes passing through a finite number of points. Thereby, some standard results arising for Max-Times systems with nonnegative entries appear as a special case. The case of two sided systems is also analyzed. In addition, a notion of eigenvalue in limit is considered. It is shown that one can construct a special semi-continuous regularized polynomial to find the eigenvalues of a matrix with nonnegative entries.

On boundary correlations in planar Ashkin-Teller models

We generalize the switching lemma of Griffiths, Hurst and Sherman to the random current representation of the Ashkin-Teller model. We then use it together with properties of two-dimensional topology to derive linear relations for multi-point boundary spin correlations and bulk order-disorder correlations in planar models. We also show that the same linear relations are satisfied by products of Pfaffians. As a result a clear picture arises in the noninteracting case of two independent Ising models where multi-point correlation functions are given by Pfaffians and determinants of their respective two-point functions. This gives a unified treatment of both the classical Pfaffian identities and recent total positivity inequalities for boundary spin correlations in the planar Ising model. We also derive the Simon and Gaussian inequality for general Ashkin-Teller models with negative four-body coupling constants.

In this article we provide with combinatorial proofs of some recent identities due to Sury and McLaughlin. We show that, the solution of a general linear recurrence with constant coefficients can be interpreted as a determinant of a matrix. Also, we derive a determinantal expression of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We prove Binets formula for Fibonacci and Lucas numbers in a purely combinatorial way and in course of doing so, we find a determinantal identity, which we think to be new.

In this note I prove a~claim on determinants of some special tridiagonal matrices. Together with my result about Fibonacci partitions (arXiv:math/0307150), this claim allows one to prove one (slightly strengthened) Shallit's result about such partitions.
On 0--1 matrices whose inverses have entries of the same modulus

A conjecture of Barrett, Butler and Hall may be stated as follows: If $n \geq 3$ and $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ (the family of $n \times n$ 0--1 matrices) is a nonsingular symmetric matrix, then the following two statements are equivalent: (a) All of the principal minors of $A$ of order $n-2$ are zero; and (b) $A^{-1}$ is a matrix all of whose entries have the same modulus and all of whose diagonal entries are equal. We show that this conjecture holds if $A$ does not have both a zero and a nonzero principal minor of order $n-4$ (if $n \geq 5$). The parity of the principal minors of nonsingular symmetric matrices $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ whose principal minors of order $n-2$ are all zero is explored, establishing, in particular, that the determinants of such matrices are all even. For an arbitrary (not necessarily symmetric) nonsingular matrix $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ with $n\geq 3$, we establish necessary conditions for $A^{-1}$ to be a matrix all of whose entries have the same modulus; examples of such conditions are the following: each row and column of $A$ has an even number of nonzero entries; each entry of $A^{-1}$ is the reciprocal of an even integer; $\det(A)$ is even; the difference between any two rows of $A$, as well as the difference between any two columns of $A$, has an even number of nonzero entries; if $A$ is symmetric, then $A$ has an even number of nonzero diagonal entries; if $A$ is symmetric and $\vec{a}_k$ is the $k$th column of $A$, then $A-\vec{a}_k\vec{a}_k^T$ has an even number of nonzero diagonal entries.

The \emph{determinant Hosoya triangle}, is a triangular array where the entries are the determinants of two-by-two Fibonacci matrices. The determinant Hosoya triangle $\bmod \,2$ gives rise to three infinite families of graphs, that are formed by complete product (join) of (the union of) two complete graphs with an empty graph. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph from these families to be integral.
Some features of these graphs are: they are integral cographs, all graphs have at most five distinct eigenvalues, all graphs are either $d$-regular graphs with $d=2,4,6,\dots $ or almost-regular graphs, and some of them are Laplacian integral. Finally we extend some of these results to the Hosoya triangle.
A magic determinant formula for symmetric polynomials of eigenvalues
Symmetric polynomials of the roots of a polynomial can be written as polynomials of the coefficients, and by applying this to the characteristic polynomial we can write a symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues $a_{i}$ of an $n\times n$ matrix $A$ as a polynomial of the entries of the matrix. We give a magic formula for this: symbolically substitute $a\mapsto A$ in the symmetric polynomial and replace multiplication by $\det$. For instance, for a $2\times2$ matrix $A$ with eigenvalues $a_{1},a_{2}$, \begin{align*} a_1 a_2^2 +a_1^2 a_2 & =\det(A_1, A_2^2)+ \det(A_1^2, A_2) \end{align*} where $A_i^k$ is the $i$-th column of $A^k$. One may also take negative powers, allowing us to calculate: \begin{align*} a_1a_2^{-1}+a_1^{-1}a_{2} & =\det(A_{1},A_{2}^{-1})+\det(A_1^{-1},A_{2}) \end{align*} The magic method also works for multivariate symmetric polynomials of the eigenvalues of a set of commuting matrices, e.g. for $2\times2$ matrices $A$ and $B$ with eigenvalues $a_1,a_2$ and $b_{1},b_{2}$, \begin{align*} a_1 b_1 a_2^2 + a_1^2a_2b_2 & = \det(AB_{1},A_2^2) + \det(A_1^2,AB_2) \end{align*}

We extend our investigation of $2$-determinants, which we defined in a previous paper. For a linear homogenous recurrence of the second order, we consider relations between different sequences satisfying the same linear homogeneous recurrence of the second order. After we prove a generalized identity of d'Ocagne, we derive, from a single identity, a number of classical identities (and their generalizations) such as d'Ocagne's, Cassini's, Catalan's and Vajda's. Along the way, the corresponding combinatorial interpretations in terms of restricted words over a finite alphabet are stated for the sequences we investigate.
Division algebra valued energized simplicial complexes
We look at connection Laplacians L,g defined by a field h:G to K, where G is a finite set of sets and K is a normed division ring which does not need to be commutative, nor associative but has a conjugation leading to the norm as the square root of h^* h. The target space K can be a normed real division algebra like the quaternions or an algebraic number field like a quadratic field. For parts of the results we can even assume K to be a Banach algebra like an operator algebra on a Hilbert space. The K-valued function h on G then defines connection matrices L,g in which the entries are in K. We show that the Dieudonne determinants of L and g are both equal to the abelianization of the product of all the field values on G. If G is a simplicial complex and h takes values in the units U of K, then g^* is the inverse of L and the sum of the energy values is equal to the sum of the Green function entries g(x,y). If K is the field C of complex numbers, we can study the spectrum of L(G,h) in dependence of the field h. The set of matrices with simple spectrum defines a |G|-dimensional non-compact Kaehler manifold that is disconnected in general and for which we can compute the fundamental group of each connected component.
Minor summation formula of hyperpfaffians and Selberg integrals
In the previous paper (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 120, 2013, 1263--1284) H. Tagawa and the two authors proposed an algebraic method to compute certain Pfaffians whose form resemble to Hankel determinants associated with moment sequences of the classical orthogonal polynomials. At the end of the paper they offered several conjectures. In this work we employ a completely different method to evaluate this type of Pfaffians. The idea is to apply certain de Bruijn type formula and convert the evaluation of the Pfaffians to the certain Selberg type integrals. This approach works not only for Pfaffians but also for hyperpfaffians. Hence it enables us to establish much more generalized identities than those conjectured in the previous paper. We also investigate some Pfaffians related to classical $q$-orthogonal polynomials.
Notes on the combinatorial fundamentals of algebra
This is a detailed survey -- with rigorous and self-contained proofs -- of some of the basics of elementary combinatorics and algebra, including the properties of finite sums, binomial coefficients, permutations and determinants. It is entirely expository (and written to a large extent as a repository for folklore proofs); no new results (and few, if any, new proofs) appear.
Refined Cauchy identity for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions

Fully inhomogeneous spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric rational functions $\mathsf{F}_λ$ arise in the context of $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ higher spin six vertex models, and are multiparameter deformations of the classical Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials. We obtain a refined Cauchy identity expressing a weighted sum of the product of two $\mathsf{F}_λ$'s as a determinant. The determinant is of Izergin-Korepin type: it is the partition function of the six vertex model with suitably decorated domain wall boundary conditions. The proof of equality of two partition functions is based on the Yang-Baxter equation.
We rewrite our Izergin-Korepin type determinant in a different form which includes one of the sets of variables in a completely symmetric way. This determinantal identity might be of independent interest, and also allows to directly link the spin Hall-Littlewood rational functions with (the Hall-Littlewood particular case of) the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In a different direction, a Schur expansion of our Izergin-Korepin type determinant yields a deformation of Schur symmetric polynomials.
In the spin-$\frac12$ specialization, our refined Cauchy identity leads to a summation identity for eigenfunctions of the ASEP (Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), a celebrated stochastic interacting particle system in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. This produces explicit integral formulas for certain multitime probabilities in ASEP.

We evaluate the Hankel determinants of various sequences related to Bernoulli and Euler numbers and special values of the corresponding polynomials. Some of these results arise as special cases of Hankel determinants of certain sums and differences of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials, while others are consequences of a method that uses the derivatives of Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. We also obtain Hankel determinants for sequences of sums and differences of powers and for generalized Bernoulli polynomials belonging to certain Dirichlet characters with small conductors. Finally, we collect and organize Hankel determinant identities for numerous sequences, both new and known, containing Bernoulli and Euler numbers and polynomials.
