A rank-$r$ integer matrix $A$ is $Δ$-modular if the determinant of each $r \times r$ submatrix has absolute value at most $Δ$. The class of $1$-modular, or unimodular, matrices is of fundamental significance in both integer programming theory and matroid theory. A 1957 result of Heller shows that the maximum number of nonzero, pairwise non-parallel rows of a rank-$r$ unimodular matrix is ${r + 1 \choose 2}$. We prove that, for each sufficiently large integer $r$, the maximum number of nonzero, pairwise non-parallel rows of a rank-$r$ $2$-modular matrix is ${r + 2 \choose 2} - 2$.
The trace formula with respect to the twisted Grover matrix of a mixed digraph
We define a zeta function woth respect to the twisted Grover matrix of a mixed digraph, and present an exponential expression and a determinant expression of this zeta function. As an application, we give a trace formula with respect to the twisted Grover matrix of a mixed digraph.

Recently, Gnutzmann and Smilansky presented a formula for the bond scattering matrix of a graph with respect to a Hermitian matrix. We present another proof for this Gnutzmann and Smilansky's formula by a technique used in the zeta function of a graph. Furthermore, we generalize Gnutzmann and Smilansky's formula to a regular covering of a graph. Finally, we define an $L$-fuction of a graph, and present a determinant expression. As a corollary, we express the generalization of Gnutzmann and Smilansky's formula to a regular covering of a graph by using its $L$-functions.
Shifted Hankel determinants of Catalan numbers and related results
In this (partly expository) paper we give a short overview about the close relationship between the sequence of Catalan numbers and Hankel determinants from the point of view of orthogonal polynomials and show that an analogous situation exists for more general sequences.
Naruse hook formula for linear extensions of mobile posets

Linear extensions of posets are important objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics that are difficult to count in general. Families of posets like Young diagrams of straight shapes and $d$-complete posets have hook-length product formulas to count linear extensions, whereas families like Young diagrams of skew shapes have determinant or positive sum formulas like the Naruse hook-length formula from 2014. In 2020, Garver et. al. gave determinant formulas to count linear extensions of a family of posets called mobile posets that refine $d$-complete posets and border strip skew shapes. We give a Naruse type hook-length formula to count linear extensions of such posets by proving a major index $q$-analogue. We also a inversion index $q$-analogue of the Naruse formula for mobile tree posets.
A Survey of the Hadamard Maximal Determinant Problem

In a celebrated paper of 1893, Hadamard established the maximal determinant theorem, which establishes an upper bound on the determinant of a matrix with complex entries of norm at most $1$. His paper concludes with the suggestion that mathematicians study the maximum value of the determinant of an $n \times n$ matrix with entries in $\{ \pm 1\}$. This is the Hadamard maximal determinant problem.
This survey provides complete proofs of the major results obtained thus far. We focus equally on upper bounds for the determinant (achieved largely via the study of the Gram matrices), and constructive lower bounds (achieved largely via quadratic residues in finite fields and concepts from design theory). To provide an impression of the historical development of the subject, we have attempted to modernise many of the original proofs, while maintaining the underlying ideas. Thus some of the proofs have the flavour of determinant theory, and some appear in print in English for the first time.
We survey constructions of matrices in order $n \equiv 3 \mod 4$, giving asymptotic analysis which has not previously appeared in the literature. We prove that there exists an infinite family of matrices achieving at least $0.48$ of the maximal determinant bound. Previously the best known constant for a result of this type was $0.34$.

We use vertex operators to compute irreducible characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$. Two general formulas are given for the irreducible characters in terms of those of the symmetric groups or the Iwahori-Hecke algebras in lower degrees. Explicit formulas are derived for the irreducible characters labeled by hooks and two-row partitions. Using duality, we also formulate a determinant type Murnaghan-Nakayama formula and give another proof of Ram's combinatorial Murnaghan-Nakayama formula. As applications, we study super-characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as well as the bitrace of the regular representation and provide a simple proof of the Halverson-Luduc-Ram formula.
Power-product matrix: nonsingularity, sparsity and determinant

We prove the nonsingularity of a class of integer matrices V(n,d), namely power-product matrix, for positive integers n and d. Some technical proofs are mainly based on linear algebra and enumerative combinatorics, particularly the generating function method and involution principle. We will show that the matrix V(n,d) is nonsingular for all positive integers n and d, and often with sparse structure. Special attention is given to the computation of the determinant V(2,d) with positive integer d.

The superspace ring $Ω_n$ is a rank $n$ polynomial ring tensor a rank $n$ exterior algebra. Using an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to $Ω_n$, the authors previously defined a family of doubly graded quotients $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ of $Ω_n$ which carry an action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and satisfy a bigraded version of Poincaré Duality. In this paper, we examine the duality modules $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ in greater detail. We describe a monomial basis of $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ and give combinatorial formulas for its bigraded Hilbert and Frobenius series. These formulas involve new combinatorial objects called {\em ordered superpartitions}. These are ordered set partitions $(B_1 \mid \cdots \mid B_k)$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ in which the non-minimal elements of any block $B_i$ may be barred or unbarred.

We show that for any permutation $w$ that avoids a certain set of 13 patterns of lengths 5 and 6, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$ can be expressed as the determinant of a matrix of elementary symmetric polynomials in a manner similar to the Jacobi-Trudi identity. For such $w$, this determinantal formula is equivalent to a (signed) subtraction-free expansion of $\mathfrak S_w$ in the basis of standard elementary monomials.
A matrix with sums of Catalan numbers -- LU-decomposition and determinant

Following Benjamin et al., a matrix with entries being sums of two neighbouring Catalan numbers is considered. Its LU-decomposition is given, by guessing the results and later prove it by computer algebra, with lots of human help. Specializing a parameter, the determinant turns out to be a Fibonacci number with odd index, confirming earlier results, obtained back then by combinatorial methods.
Centered polygon numbers, heptagons and nonagons, and the Robbins numbers
In this note, we explore certain determinantal descriptions of the Robbins numbers. Techniques used for this include continued fractions, Riordan arrays and series inversion. Proven and conjectured representations involve the determinants of both Hankel and symmetric matrices. In specific cases, links are drawn to centered polygonal numbers, and to heptagons and nonagons. We conjecture a Hankel transform determinant for the Robbins numbers related to the Fibonacci and the Catalan numbers.
A condition for the existence of zero coefficients in the powers of the determinant polynomial

We discuss the existence of zero coefficients in the powers of the determinant polynomial of order $n$. D. G. Glynn proved that the coefficients of the $m$th power of the determinant polynomial are all nonzero, if $m = p-1$ with a prime $p$. We show that the converse also holds, if $n \geq 3$. The proof is quite elementary.
Identities for Schur-type determinants and pfaffians
We give a simple formula for some determinants, and an analogous formula for pfaffians, both of which are polynomial identities. The second involve some expressions that interpolate between determinants and pfaffians. We give several tableau formulas for difference operators in Types A and C, as well as other operators that appear in the "enriched", or "back-stable" Schubert polynomials. There are also tableau formulas for the enriched Schubert polynomials for vexillary and $321$-avoiding permutations.

We use a Hamiltonian (transition matrix) description of height-restricted Dyck paths on the plane in which generating functions for the paths arise as matrix elements of the propagator to evaluate the length and area generating function for paths with arbitrary starting and ending points, expressing it as a rational combination of determinants. Exploiting a connection between random walks and quantum exclusion statistics that we previously established, we express this generating function in terms of grand partition functions for exclusion particles in a finite harmonic spectrum and present an alternative, simpler form for its logarithm that makes its polynomial structure explicit.
On Hankel Determinants for Dyck Paths with Peaks Avoiding Multiple Classes of Heights

For any integer $m\ge 2$ and a set $V\subset \{1,\dots,m\}$, let $(m,V)$ denote the union of congruence classes of the elements in $V$ modulo $m$. We study the Hankel determinants for the number of Dyck paths with peaks avoiding the heights in the set $(m,V)$. For any set $V$ of even elements of an even modulo $m$, we give an explicit description of the sequence of Hankel determinants in terms of subsequences of arithmetic progression of integers. There are numerous instances for varied $(m,V)$ with periodic sequences of Hankel determinants. We present a sufficient condition for the set $(m,V)$ such that the sequence of Hankel determinants is periodic, including even and odd modulus $m$.
A determinant identity for moments of orthogonal polynomials that implies Uvarov's formula for the orthogonal polynomials of rationally related densities
Let $p_n(x)$, $n=0,1,\dots$, be the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a given density $dμ(x)$. Furthermore, let $dν(x)$ be a density which arises from $dμ(x)$ by multiplication by a rational function in $x$. We prove a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of moments of $dν(x)$ in terms of a determinant involving the orthogonal polynomials $p_n(x)$ and associated functions $q_n(x)=\int p_n(u) \,dμ(u)/(x-u)$. Uvarov's formula for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $dν(x)$ is a corollary of our theorem. Our result generalises a Hankel determinant formula for the case where the rational function is a polynomial that existed somehow hidden in the folklore of the theory of orthogonal polynomials but has been stated explicitly only relatively recently (see [arXiv:2101.04225]). Our theorem can be interpreted in a two-fold way: analytically or in the sense of formal series. We apply our theorem to derive several curious Hankel determinant evaluations.

We give a simple proof of a major index determinant formula in the symmetric group discovered by Krattenthaler and first proved by Thibon using noncommutative symmetric functions. We do so by proving a factorization of an element in the group ring of the symmetric group. By applying similar methods to the groups of signed permutations and colored permutations, we prove determinant formulas in these groups as conjectured by Krattenthaler.

In this paper we prove the case $dim(V_3)=3$ of a conjecture about the exterior operad $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}$. For this we introduce a collection of natural involutions on the set of homogeneous cycle-free $d$-partitions of the complete graph $K_{2d}$, and show that these involutions correspond to the relations in $Λ^{S^2}_{V_d}(2d+1)$. When $d=3$ this correspondence allows us to give an explicit description of a determinant-like map and to settle the above mentioned conjecture.
Properties of the Toric Rings of a Chordal Bipartite Family of Graphs

This work concerns the study of properties of a group of Koszul algebras coming from the toric ideals of a chordal bipartite infinite family of graphs (alternately, these rings may be interpreted as coming from determinants of certain ladder-like structures). We determine a linear system of parameters for each ring and explicitly determine the Hilbert series for the resulting Artinian reduction. As corollaries, we obtain the multiplicity and regularity of the original rings. This work extends results easily derived from lattice theory for a subfamily coming from a two-sided ladder to a family where, as we show, lattice theory no longer applies in any obvious way and includes constructive proofs which may be useful in future study of these rings and others.
