The distance spectrum of the complements of graphs of diameter greater than three
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose that $G$ is a connected simple graph with the vertex set $V( G ) = \{ v_1,v_2,\cdots ,v_n \} $. Let $d( v_i,v_j ) $ be the distance between $v_i$ and $v_j$. Then the distance matrix of $G$ is $D( G ) =( d_{ij} )_{n\times n}$, where $d_{ij}=d( v_i,v_j ) $. Since $D( G )$ is a non-negative real symmetric matrix, its eigenvalues can be arranged $λ_1(G)\ge λ_2(G)\ge \cdots \ge λ_n(G)$, where eigenvalues $λ_1(G)$ and $λ_n(G)$ are called the distance spectral radius and the least distance eigenvalue of $G$, respectively. The {\it diameter} of graph $G$ is the farthest distance between all pairs of vertices. In this paper, we determine the unique graph whose distance spectral radius attains maximum and minimum among all complements of graphs of diameter greater than three, respectively. Furthermore, we also characterize the unique graph whose least distance eigenvalue attains maximum and minimum among all complements of graphs of diameter greater than three, respectively.
Distance Eigenvalues and Forwarding Indices of Multiplicative Circulant Graph of Order Power of Two and Three
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use Breadth-first search algorithm to determine the distance matrix of multiplicative circulant graph of order power of two and three. As a consequence, the diameter of the graphs were determined. We also give their distance spectral radii, average distances, as well as the exact values of vertex-forwarding indices. Finally, using some known relationships between the distance spectral radii and forwarding indices of a graph, we give some bounds for their edge-forwarding indices.
Spectral theory of products of digraphs

A unified approach to the determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of specific matrices associated with directed graphs is presented. Matrices studied include the distance matrix, distance Laplacian, and distance signless Laplacian, in addition to the adjacency matrix, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian. Various sums of Kronecker products of nonnegative matrices are introduced to model the Cartesian and lexicographic products of digraphs. The Jordan canonical form is applied extensively to the analysis of spectra and eigenvectors. The analysis shows that Cartesian products provide a method for building infinite families of transmission regular digraphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues.

On the sum of $k$-th largest distance eigenvalues of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$ and an integer $k\geq 1$, we denote by $$S_k(D(G))=λ_1(D(G))+\cdots+λ_k(D(G))$$ the sum of $k$ largest distance eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we consider the sharp upper bound and lower bound of $S_k(D(G))$. We determine the sharp lower bounds of $S_k(D(G))$ when $G$ is connected graph and is a tree, respectively, and characterize both the extremal graphs. Moreover, we conjecture that the upper bound is attained when $G$ is a path of order $n$ and prove some partial result supporting the conjecture. To prove our result, we obtain a sharp upper bound of $λ_2(D(G))$ in terms of the order and the diameter of $G$, where $λ_2(D(G))$ is the second largest distance eigenvalue of $G$. As applications, we prove a general inequality involving $λ_2(D(G))$, the independence number of $G$, and the number of triangles in $G$. An immediate corollary is a conjecture of Fajtlowicz, which was confirmed in \cite{L15-L} by a different argument. We conclude this paper with some open problems for further study.

Graphs with at most three distance eigenvalues different from $-1$ and $-2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices, and let $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. Let $\partial_1(G)\ge\partial_2(G)\ge\cdots\ge\partial_n(G)$ denote the eigenvalues of $D(G)$. In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with $\partial_{3}(G)\leq -1$ and $\partial_{n-1}(G)\geq -2$. By the way, we determine all connected graphs with at most three distance eigenvalues different from $-1$ and $-2$.

The distance spectra of the derangement graphs
In this paper, we consider the distance spectra of the derangement graphs. First we give a constructive proof that the connected derangement graphs are of diameter 2. Then we obtain their distance spectra. In particular, we determine all their extremal distance eigenvalues.

The graphs with exactly two distance eigenvalues different from $-1$ and $-3$
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics (2016) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we completely characterize the graphs with third largest distance eigenvalue at most $-1$ and smallest distance eigenvalue at least $-3$. In particular, we determine all graphs whose distance matrices have exactly two eigenvalues (counting multiplicity) different from $-1$ and $-3$. It turns out that such graphs consist of three infinite classes, and all of them are determined by their distance spectra. We also show that the friendship graph is determined by its distance spectrum.
On the distance spectra of graphs

The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

Remoteness and distance eigenvalues of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ with diameter $d$. Remoteness $ρ$ of $G$ is the maximum average distance from a vertex to all others and $\partial_1\geq\cdots\geq \partial_n$ are the distance eigenvalues of $G$. In \cite{AH}, Aouchiche and Hansen conjectured that $ρ+\partial_3>0$ when $d\geq 3$ and $ρ+\partial_{\lfloor\frac{7d}{8}\rfloor}>0.$ In this paper, we confirm these two conjectures. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on $\partial_n+ρ$ and $\partial_1-ρ$ when $G\ncong K_n$ and the extremal graphs are characterized.

On the second largest distance eigenvalue of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G.$ Suppose that $λ_{1}(D(G))\geqλ_{2}(D(G))\geq\cdots\geqλ_{n}(D(G))$ are the distance spectrum of $G$. A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its $D$-spectrum if with respect to the distance matrix $D(G)$, any graph with the same spectrum as $G$ is isomorphic to $G$. In this paper, we consider spectral characterization on the second largest distance eigenvalue $λ_{2}(D(G))$ of graphs, and prove that the graphs with $λ_{2}(D(G))\leq\frac{17-\sqrt{329}}{2}\approx-0.5692$ are determined by their $D$-spectra.

Calculus on Graphs
The purpose of this paper is to develop a "calculus" on graphs that allows graph theory to have new connections to analysis. For example, our framework gives rise to many new partial differential equations on graphs, most notably a new (Laplacian based) wave equation; this wave equation gives rise to a partial improvement on the Chung-Faber-Manteuffel diameter/eigenvalue bound in graph theory, and the Chung-Grigoryan-Yau and (in a certain case) Bobkov-Ledoux distance/eigenvalue bounds in analysis. Our framework also allows most techniques for the non-linear p-Laplacian in analysis to be easily carried over to graph theory.
