A certain ratio of generating functions of lozenge tilings, obtained with non--intersecting lattice paths
In a recent preprint, Lai worked out the quotient of generating functions of weighted lozenge tilings of two "half hexagons with lateral dents" which differ only in width. Lai achieved this by using "graphical condensation" (i.e., application of a certain Pfaffian identity to the weighted enumeration of matchings). The purpose of this note is to exhibit how this can be done by the Lindström--Gessel--Viennot method for nonintersecting lattice paths in a quite simple way. Basically the same observation, but restricted to mere enumeration (i.e., all weights of lozenge tilings are equal to $1$), is contained in a recent preprint of Condon.

The number of oriented rational links with a given deficiency number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $U_n$ be the set of un-oriented and rational links with crossing number $n$, a precise formula for $|U_n|$ was obtained by Ernst and Sumners in 1987. In this paper, we study the enumeration problem of oriented rational links. Let $Λ_n$ be the set of oriented rational links with crossing number $n$ and let $Λ_n(d)$ be the set of oriented rational links with crossing number $n$ ($n\ge 2$) and deficiency $d$. In this paper, we derive precise formulas for $|Λ_n|$ and $|Λ_n(d)|$ for any given $n$ and $d$ and show that $$ Λ_n(d)=F_{n-d-1}^{(d)}+\frac{1+(-1)^{nd}}{2}F^{(\lfloor \frac{d}{2}\rfloor)}_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor -\lfloor \frac{d+1}{2}\rfloor}, $$ where $F_n^{(d)}$ is the convolved Fibonacci sequence.

Bijective enumeration of rook walks
In this paper we answer a question posed by R. Stanley in his collection of Bijection Proof Problems (Problem 240). We present a bijective proof for the enumeration of walks of length $k$ a chess rook can move along on an $m\times n$ board starting and ending on the same square.
Counting independent sets in Riordan graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of a Riordan graph was introduced recently, and it is a far-reaching generalization of the well-known Pascal graphs and Toeplitz graphs. However, apart from a certain subclass of Toeplitz graphs, nothing was known on independent sets in Riordan graphs. In this paper, we give exact enumeration and lower and upper bounds for the number of independent sets for various classes of Riordan graphs. Remarkably, we offer a variety of methods to solve the problems that range from the structural decomposition theorem to methods in combinatorics on words. Some of our results are valid for any graph.

A geometric and combinatorial exploration of Hochschild lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hochschild lattices are specific intervals in the dexter meet-semilattices recently introduced by Chapoton. A natural geometric realization of these lattices leads to some cell complexes introduced by Saneblidze, called the Hochschild polytopes. We obtain several geometrical properties of the Hochschild lattices, namely we give cubic realizations, establish that these lattices are EL-shellable, and show that they are constructible by interval doubling. We also prove several combinatorial properties as the enumeration of their $k$-chains and compute their degree polynomials.
Counting Phylogenetic Networks with Few Reticulation Vertices: Exact Enumeration and Corrections
In previous work, we gave asymptotic counting results for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k$ reticulation vertices and explicit exponential generating functions of the counting sequences for $k=1,2,3$. The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, we make some corrections to our previous approach which overcounted the above numbers and thus gives erroneous exponential generating functions (however, the overcounting does not effect our asymptotic counting results). Secondly, we use our (corrected) exponential generating functions to derive explicit formulas for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k=1,2,3$ reticulation vertices. This re-derives recent results of Carona and Zhang, answers their question for normal networks with $k=2$, and adds new formulas in the case $k=3$.

Asymptotic enumeration of digraphs and bipartite graphs by degree sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide asymptotic formulae for the numbers of bipartite graphs with given degree sequence, and of loopless digraphs with given in- and out-degree sequences, for a wide range of parameters. Our results cover medium range densities and close the gaps between the results known for the sparse and dense ranges. In the case of bipartite graphs, these results were proved by Greenhill, McKay and Wang in 2006 and by Canfield, Greenhill and McKay in 2008, respectively. Our method also essentially covers the sparse range, for which much less was known in the case of loopless digraphs. For the range of densities which our results cover, they imply that the degree sequence of a random bipartite graph with m edges is accurately modelled by a sequence of independent binomial random variables, conditional upon the sum of variables in each part being equal to m. A similar model also holds for loopless digraphs.

On polynomials counting essentially irreducible maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider maps on genus-$g$ surfaces with $n$ (labeled) faces of prescribed even degrees. It is known since work of Norbury that, if one disallows vertices of degree one, the enumeration of such maps is related to the counting of lattice point in the moduli space of genus-$g$ curves with $n$ labeled points and is given by a symmetric polynomial $N_{g,n}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n)$ in the face degrees $2\ell_1, \ldots, 2\ell_n$. We generalize this by restricting to genus-$g$ maps that are essentially $2b$-irreducible for $b\geq 0$, which loosely speaking means that they are not allowed to possess contractible cycles of length less than $2b$ and each such cycle of length $2b$ is required to bound a face of degree $2b$. The enumeration of such maps is shown to be again given by a symmetric polynomial $\hat{N}_{g,n}^{(b)}(\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_n)$ in the face degrees with a polynomial dependence on $b$. These polynomials satisfy (generalized) string and dilaton equations, which for $g\leq 1$ uniquely determine them. The proofs rely heavily on a substitution approach by Bouttier and Guitter and the enumeration of planar maps on genus-$g$ surfaces.

Enumeration of Standard Puzzles
We introduce a large family of combinatorial objects, called standard puzzles, defined by very simple rules. We focus on the standard puzzles for which the enumeration problems can be solved by explicit formulas or by classical numbers, such as binomial coefficients, Fibonacci numbers, tangent numbers, Catalan numbers, $\ldots$

A Fourfold Refined Enumeration of Alternating Sign Trapezoids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 29(3):P3.42, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Alternating sign trapezoids have recently been introduced as a generalisation of alternating sign triangles. Fischer established a threefold refined enumeration of alternating sign trapezoids and provided three statistics on column strict shifted plane partitions with the same joint distribution. In this paper, we are able to add a new pair of statistics to these results. More precisely, we consider the number of $-1$s on alternating sign trapezoids and introduce a corresponding statistic on column strict shifted plane partitions that has the same distribution. More generally, we show that the joint distributions of the two quadruples of statistics on alternating sign trapezoids and column strict shifted plane partitions, respectively, coincide. In addition, we provide a closed-form expression for the $2$-enumeration of alternating sign trapezoids.

Tilted Halved Hexagons: Hexagons, Semi-hexagons, and Halved Hexagons Under One Roof
We investigate a new family of regions that is the universal generalization of three well-known region families in the field of enumeration of tilings: the quasi-regular hexagons, the semi-hexagons, and the halved hexagons. We prove a simple product formula for the number of tilings of these new regions. Our main result also yields the enumerations of two special classes of plane partitions with restricted parts.
The distributions under two species-tree models of the number of root ancestral configurations for matching gene trees and species trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a pair consisting of a gene tree and a species tree, the ancestral configurations at an internal node of the species tree are the distinct sets of gene lineages that can be present at that node. Ancestral configurations appear in computations of gene tree probabilities under evolutionary models conditional on fixed species trees, and the enumeration of root ancestral configurations -- ancestral configurations at the root of the species tree -- assists in describing the complexity of these computations. In the case that the gene tree matches the species tree in topology, we study the distribution of the number of root ancestral configurations of a random labeled tree topology under each of two models.
Sorting with pattern-avoiding stacks: the $132$-machine
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper continues the analysis of the pattern-avoiding sorting machines recently introduced by Cerbai, Claesson and Ferrari [CCF]. These devices consist of two stacks, through which a permutation is passed in order to sort it, where the content of each stack must at all times avoid a certain pattern. Here we characterize and enumerate the set of permutations that can be sorted when the first stack is $132$-avoiding, solving one of the open problems proposed in [CCF]. To that end we present several connections with other well known combinatorial objects, such as lattice paths and restricted growth functions (which encode set partitions). We also provide new proofs for the enumeration of some sets of pattern-avoiding restricted growth functions and we expect that the tools introduced can be fruitfully employed to get further similar results.

Retakh's Motzkin paths and some combinatorial comments
Published • View PublicationBIB
Dyck paths where peaks are only allowed on level 1 and on even-indexed levels, were introduced by Retakh and analysed by Zeilberger, with assistance from Ekhad. We add some combinatorial comments to the enumeration, which involves Motzkin numbers, in particular, about the average height of such objects.

Enumeration of standard barely set-valued tableaux of shifted shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A standard barely set-valued tableau of shape $λ$ is a filling of the Young diagram $λ$ with integers $1,2,\dots,|λ|+1$ such that the integers are increasing in each row and column, and every cell contains one integer except one cell that contains two integers. Counting standard barely set-valued tableaux is closely related to the coincidental down-degree expectations (CDE) of lower intervals in Young's lattice. Using $q$-integral techniques we give a formula for the number of standard barely set-valued tableaux of arbitrary shifted shape. We show how it can be used to recover two formulas, originally conjectured by Reiner, Tenner and Yong, and proved by Hopkins, for numbers of standard barely set valued tableaux of particular shifted-balanced shapes. We also prove a conjecture of Reiner, Tenner and Yong on the CDE property of the shifted shape $(n,n-2,n-4,\dots,n-2k+2)$. Finally, in the Appendix we raise a conjecture on an $\mathsf a;q$-analogue of the down-degree expectation with respect to the uniform distribution for a specific class of lower order ideals of Young's lattice.

Enumeration of Deutsch paths by adding the adding-a-new-slice method and applications
A variation of Dyck paths allows for down-steps of arbitrary length, not just one. This is motivated by ideas due to Emeric Deutsch. We use the adding-a-new-slice technique and the kernel method to compute the number of maximal runs of up-step runs of length 1 and a subclass of Deutsch paths satisfying a condition that was stipulated by R. Stanley for Dyck paths.

Promotion of Kreweras words
Published in Selecta Mathematica (N.S.) 28(1), 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Kreweras words are words consisting of n A's, n B's, and n C's in which every prefix has at least as many A's as B's and at least as many A's as C's. Equivalently, a Kreweras word is a linear extension of the poset ${\sf V}\times [n]$. Kreweras words were introduced in 1965 by Kreweras, who gave a remarkable product formula for their enumeration. Subsequently they became a fundamental example in the theory of lattice walks in the quarter plane. We study Schützenberger's promotion operator on the set of Kreweras words. In particular, we show that 3n applications of promotion on a Kreweras word merely swaps the B's and C's. Doing so, we provide the first answer to a question of Stanley from 2009, asking for posets with `good' behavior under promotion, other than the four families of shapes classified by Haiman in 1992. We also uncover a strikingly simple description of Kreweras words in terms of Kuperberg's $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-webs, and Postnikov's trip permutation associated with any plabic graph. In this description, Schützenberger's promotion corresponds to rotation of the web.

Counting General Phylogenetic networks
We provide precise asymptotic estimates for the number of general phylogenetic networks by using analytic combinatorial methods. Recently, this approach is studied by Fuchs, Gittenberger, and the author himself (Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 73(2):385-423, 2019), to count networks with few reticulation vertices for two subclasses: tree-child and normal networks. We follow this line of research to show how to obtain results on the enumeration of general phylogenetic networks.
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric plane partitions
We study the Schur polynomial expansion of a family of symmetric polynomials related to the refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to their inversion number, complementary inversion number and the position of the unique $1$ in the top row. We prove that the expansion can be expressed as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions and we are also able to determine the coefficients. This establishes a new connection between alternating sign matrices and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. As a by-product we obtain an interesting map from totally symmetric plane partitions to Dyck paths. The proof is based on a new, quite general antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula.
Eulerian Central Limit Theorems and Carlitz identities in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Central Limit Theorems are known for the Eulerian statistic "descent" (or "excedance") in the symmetric group $\SSS_n$. Recently, Fulman, Kim, Lee and Petersen gave a Central Limit Theorem for "descent" over the alternating group $\AAA_n$ and also gave a Carlitz identity in $\AAA_n$ using descents. In this paper, we give a Central Limit Theorem in $\AAA_n$ involving excedances. We extend these to the positive elements in type B and type D Coxeter groups. Boroweic and Młotkowski enumerated type B descents over $\DD_n$, the type D Coxeter group and gave similar results. We refine their results for both the positive and negative part of $\DD_n$. Our results are a consequence of signed enumeration over these subsets.
