Some Problems and Algorithms Related to the Weight Order Relation on the $n$-dimensional Boolean Cube

The problem "Given a Boolean function $f$ of $n$ variables by its truth table vector. Find (if exists) a vector $α\in \{0,1\}^n$ of maximal (or minimal) weight, such that $f(α)= 1$." is considered here. It is closely related to the problem of fast computing the algebraic degree of Boolean functions. It is an important cryptographic parameter used in the design of S-boxes in modern block ciphers, PRNGs in stream ciphers, at Reed-Muller codes, etc. To find effective solutions to this problem we explore the orders of the vectors of the $n$-dimensional Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ in accordance with their weights. The notion of "$k$-th layer" of $\{0,1\}^n$ is involved in the definition and examination of the "weight order" relation. It is compared with the known relation "precedes". Several enumeration problems concerning these relations are solved and the corresponding comments were added to 3 sequences in the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). One special order (among the numerous weight orders) is defined and examined in detail. The lexicographic order is a second criterion for an ordinance of the vectors of equal weights. So a total order called Weight-Lexicographic Order (WLO) is obtained. Two algorithms for generating the WLO sequence and two algorithms for generating the characteristic vectors of the layers are proposed. Their results were used in creating 2 new sequences: A294648 and A305860 in the OEIS. Two algorithms for solving the problem considered are developed--the first one works in a byte-wise manner and uses the WLO sequence, and the second one works in a bitwise manner and uses the characteristic vector as masks. The experimental results after many tests confirm the efficiency of these algorithms. Some other applications of the obtained algorithms are also discussed--for example, when representing, generating and ranking other combinatorial objects.
Enumeration of lattice polytopes by their volume

A well known result by Lagarias and Ziegler states that there are finitely many equivalence classes of d-dimensional lattice polytopes having volume at most K, for fixed constants d and K. We describe an algorithm for the complete enumeration of such equivalence classes for arbitrary constants d and K. The algorithm, which gives another proof of the finiteness result, is implemented for small values of K, up to dimension six. The resulting database contains and extends several existing ones, and has been used to correct mistakes in other classifications. When specialized to three-dimensional smooth polytopes, it extends previous classifications by Bogart et al., Lorenz and Lundman. Moreover, we give a structure theorem for smooth polytopes with few lattice points that proves that they have a quadratic triangulation and that we use, together with the classification, to describe smooth polytopes having small volume in arbitrary dimension. In dimension three we enumerate all the simplices having up to 11 interior lattice points and we use them to conjecture a set of sharp inequalities for the coefficients of the Ehrhart h*-polynomials, unifying several existing conjectures. Finally, we extract and discuss minimal interesting examples from the classification, and we study the frequency of properties such as being spanning, very ample, IDP, and having a unimodular cover or triangulation. In particular, we find the smallest polytopes which are very ample but not IDP, and with a unimodular cover but without a unimodular triangulation.
Triples of Orthogonal Latin and Youden Rectangles For Small Orders
We have performed a complete enumeration of non-isotopic triples of mutually orthogonal $k\times n$ Latin rectangles for $k\leq n \leq 7$. Here we will present a census of such triples, classified by various properties, including the order of the autotopism group of the triple. As part of this we have also achieved the first enumeration of pairwise orthogonal triples of Youden rectangles. We have also studied orthogonal triples of $k \times 8$ rectangles which are formed by extending mutually orthogonal triples with non-trivial autotopisms one row at a time, and requiring that the autotopism group is non-trivial in each step. This class includes a triple coming from the projective plane of order 8. Here we find a remarkably symmetrical pair of triples of $4 \times 8$ rectangles, formed by juxtaposing two selected copies of complete sets of MOLS of order 4.
Two Questions about the Fractional Counting of Partitions
We recall the notion of fractional enumeration and immediately focus on the fractional counting of integer partitions, where each partition gets credit equal to the reciprocal of the product of its parts. We raise two intriguing questions regarding this count, and for each of these questions, we are pledging a 100 US dollars donation to the OEIS in honor of the first solver. In this revised version we announce that both questions have been answered. The first was first answered by Will Sawin and the second was answered by Christopher Ryba. A donation to the OEIS, of 100 US dollars each, in their honor has been made.
Another Enumeration of Caterpillar Trees
A caterpillar tree is a connected, acyclic, graph in which all vertices are either a member of a central path, or joined to that central path by a single edge. In other words, caterpillar trees are the class of trees which become path graphs after removing all leaves. In 1973, F. Harary and A.J. Schwenk provided two proofs found in [1] which show that the number of non-isomorphic caterpillars with N vertices is given by the formula $2^{N-4} + \ 2^{ \lfloor \frac{N - 4}{2}\rfloor}$, where $\lfloor \ \rfloor$ denotes the floor function. The first proof follows from a special case of an application of Pólya's Enumeration theorem on graphs with integer-weighted vertices. The second proof proceeds through an appropriate edge labelling of the caterpillars. The proof presented here owes much of its insight to the first two, but has the benefit of utilizing a natural labelling for the caterpillars. We will proceed by labelling the vertices of the caterpillars with integer-weights, followed by an application of the orbit-counting theorem.

We consider in this work triangulations of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ that are periodic along $\mathbb{Z}^n$. They generalize the triangulations obtained from Delaunay tessellations of lattices. Other important property is the regularity and central-symmetry property of triangulations.
Full enumeration for dimension at most $4$ is obtained. In dimension $5$ several new phenomena happen: there are centrally-symmetric triangulations that are not Delaunay, there are non-regular triangulations (it could happen in dimension $4$) and a given simplex has a priori an infinity of possible adjacent simplices. We found $950$ periodic triangulations in dimension $5$ but finiteness is unknown.
Enumeration of $S$-omino towers and row-convex $k$-omino towers
We first enumerate a generalization of domino towers that was proposed by Tricia M. Brown (J. Integer Seq. 20 (2017)), which we call S-omino towers. We establish equations that the generating function must satisfy and then apply the Lagrange inversion formula to find a closed formula for the number of towers. We also show a connection to generalized Dyck paths and provide an explicit bijection. Finally, we consider the set of row-convex k-omino towers, introduced by Brown, and calculate an exact generating function.
The Hessenberg matrices and Catalan and its generalized numbers
We present determinantal representations of the Catalan numbers, k-Fuss-Catalan numbers, and its generalized number. The entries of the normalized Hessenberg matrices are the binomial coefficients that related with the enumeration of lattice paths.
A new determinant for the $Q$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices

Fischer provided a new type of binomial determinant for the number of alternating sign matrices involving the third root of unity. In this paper we prove that her formula, when replacing the third root of unity by an indeterminate $q$, is actually the $(2+q+q^{-1})$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices. By evaluating a generalisation of this determinant we are able to reprove a conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey stating that the $Q$-enumeration is a product of two polynomials in $Q$. Further we provide a closed product formula for the generalised determinant in the 0-,1- 2- and 3-enumeration case, leading to a new proof of the $1$-,$2$- and $3$-enumeration of alternating sign matrices, and a factorisation in the $4$-enumeration case. Finally we relate the $1$-enumeration of our generalised determinant to the determinant evaluations of Ciucu, Eisenkölbl, Krattenthaler and Zare, which counts weighted cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a triangular hole and is a generalisation of a famous result by Andrews.

A lucasene is a hexagon chain that is similar to a fibonaccene, an $L$-fence is a poset the Hasse diagram of which is isomorphic to the directed inner dual graph of the corresponding lucasene. A new class of cubes, which named after matchable Lucas cubes according to the number of its vertices (or elements), are a series of directed or undirected Hasse diagrams of filter lattices of $L$-fences. The basic properties and several classes of polynomials, e.g.\ rank generating functions, cube polynomials and degree sequence polynomials, of matchable Lucas cubes are obtained. Some special conclusions on binomial coefficients and Lucas triangle are given.

We consider the enumeration of walks on the non-negative lattice $\mathbb{N}^d$, with steps defined by a set $\mathcal{S} \subset \{-1, 0, 1\}^d \setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$. Previous work in this area has established asymptotics for the number of walks in certain families of models by applying the techniques of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV), where one encodes the generating function of a lattice path model as the diagonal of a multivariate rational function. Melczer and Mishna obtained asymptotics when the set of steps $\mathcal{S}$ is symmetric over every axis; in this setting one can always apply the methods of ACSV to a multivariate rational function whose whose set of singularities is a smooth manifold (the simplest case). Here we go further, providing asymptotics for models with generating functions that must be encoded by multivariate rational functions with non-smooth singular sets. In the process, our analysis connects past work to deeper structural results in the theory of analytic combinatorics in several variables. One application is a closed form for asymptotics of models defined by step sets which are symmetric over all but one axis. As a special case, we apply our results when $d=2$ to give a rigorous proof of asymptotics conjectured by Bostan and Kauers; asymptotics for walks returning to boundary axes and the origin are also given.
The algebraic area of closed lattice random walks

We propose a formula for the enumeration of closed lattice random walks of length $n$ enclosing a given algebraic area. The information is contained in the Kreft coefficients which encode, in the commensurate case, the Hofstadter secular equation for a quantum particle hopping on a lattice coupled to a perpendicular magnetic field. The algebraic area enumeration is possible because it is split in $2^{n/2-1}$ pieces, each tractable in terms of explicit combinatorial expressions.
Bijections Between Łukasiewicz Walks and Generalized Tandem Walks

In this article, we study the enumeration by length of several walk models on the square lattice. We obtain bijections between walks in the upper half-plane returning to the $x$-axis and walks in the quarter plane. A recent work by Bostan, Chyzak, and Mahboubi has given a bijection for models using small north, west, and south-east steps. We adapt and generalize it to a bijection between half-plane walks using those three steps in two colours and a quarter-plane model over the symmetrized step set consisting of north, north-west, west, south, south-east, and east. We then generalize our bijections to certain models with large steps: for given $p\geq1$, a bijection is given between the half-plane and quarter-plane models obtained by keeping the small south-east step and replacing the two steps north and west of length 1 by the $p+1$ steps of length $p$ in directions between north and west. This model is close to, but distinct from, the model of generalized tandem walks studied by Bousquet-Mélou, Fusy, and Raschel.

We consider the graphs involved in the theoretical physics model known as the colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We study in detail their combinatorial properties at any order in the so-called $1/N$ expansion, and we enumerate these graphs asymptotically. Because of the duality between colored graphs involving $q+1$ colors and colored triangulations in dimension $q$, our results apply to the asymptotic enumeration of spaces that generalize unicellular maps - in the sense that they are obtained from a single building block - for which a higher-dimensional generalization of the genus is kept fixed.

Exhaustive generation for permutations avoiding a (colored) regular sets of patterns

Despite the fact that the field of pattern avoiding permutations has been skyrocketing over the last two decades, there are very few exhaustive generating algorithms for such classes of permutations. In this paper we introduce the notions of regular and colored regular set of forbidden patterns, which are particular cases of right-justified sets of forbidden patterns. We show the (colored) regularity of several sets of forbidden patterns (some of them involving variable length patterns) and we derive a general framework for the efficient generation of permutations avoiding them. The obtained generating algorithms are based on succession functions, a notion which is a byproduct of the ECO method introduced in the context of enumeration and random generation of combinatorial objects by Barcucci et al. in 1999, and developed later by Bacchelli et al. in 2004, for instance. For some classes of permutations falling under our general framework, the corresponding counting sequences are classical in combinatorics, such as Pell, Fibonacci, Catalan, Schröder and binomial transform of Padovan sequence.
What is an answer? - remarks, results and problems on PIO formulas in combinatorial enumeration, part I
For enumerative problems, i.e. computable functions f from N to Z, we define the notion of an effective (or closed) formula. It is an algorithm computing f(n) in the number of steps that is polynomial in the combined size of the input n and the output f(n), both written in binary notation. We discuss many examples of enumerative problems for which such closed formulas are, or are not, known. These problems include (i) linear recurrence sequences and holonomic sequences, (ii) integer partitions, (iii) pattern-avoiding permutations, (iv) triangle-free graphs and (v) regular graphs. In part I we discuss problems (i) and (ii) and defer (iii)--(v) to part II. Besides other results, we prove here that every linear recurrence sequence of integers has an effective formula in our sense.
The number of multiplicative Sidon sets of integers

A set $S$ of natural numbers is multiplicative Sidon if the products of all pairs in $S$ are distinct. Erdős in 1938 studied the maximum size of a multiplicative Sidon subset of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$, which was later determined up to the lower order term: $π(n)+Θ(\frac{n^{3/4}}{(\log n)^{3/2}})$. We show that the number of multiplicative Sidon subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ is $T(n)\cdot 2^{Θ(\frac{n^{3/4}}{(\log n)^{3/2}})}$ for a certain function $T(n)\approx 2^{1.815π(n)}$ which we specify. This is a rare example in which the order of magnitude of the lower order term in the exponent is determined. It resolves the enumeration problem for multiplicative Sidon sets initiated by Cameron and Erdős in the 80s.
We also investigate its extension for generalised multiplicative Sidon sets. Denote by $S_k$, $k\ge 2$, the number of multiplicative $k$-Sidon subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$. We show that $S_k(n)=(β_k+o(1))^{π(n)}$ for some $β_k$ we define explicitly. Our proof is elementary.

Zonotopes are a rich and fascinating family of polytopes, with connections to many areas of mathematics. In this article we provide a brief survey of classical and recent results related to lattice zonotopes. Our emphasis is on connections to combinatorics, both in the sense of enumeration (e.g. Ehrhart theory) and combinatorial structures (e.g. graphs and permutations).
Enumerating five families of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences; and introducing the powered Catalan numbers

The first problem addressed by this article is the enumeration of some families of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences. We solve some enumerative conjectures left open by the foundational work on the topics by Corteel et al., some of these being also solved independently by Lin, and Kim and Lin. The strength of our approach is its robustness: we enumerate four families $F_1 \subset F_2 \subset F_3 \subset F_4$ of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences ordered by inclusion using the same approach. More precisely, we provide a generating tree (with associated succession rule) for each family $F_i$ which generalizes the one for the family $F_{i-1}$.
The second topic of the paper is the enumeration of a fifth family $F_5$ of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences (containing $F_4$). This enumeration is also solved \emph{via} a succession rule, which however does not generalize the one for $F_4$. The associated enumeration sequence, which we call the \emph{powered Catalan numbers}, is quite intriguing, and further investigated. We provide two different succession rules for it, denoted $Ω_{pCat}$ and $Ω_{steady}$, and show that they define two types of families enumerated by powered Catalan numbers. Among such families, we introduce the \emph{steady paths}, which are naturally associated with $Ω_{steady}$. They allow us to bridge the gap between the two types of families enumerated by powered Catalan numbers: indeed, we provide a size-preserving bijection between steady paths and valley-marked Dyck paths (which are naturally associated with $Ω_{pCat}$).
Along the way, we provide several nice connections to families of permutations defined by the avoidance of vincular patterns, and some enumerative conjectures.
