Extremal hypergraphs for matching number and domination number
Published • View PublicationBIB
A matching in a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of pairwise disjoint hyperedges. The matching number $ν(\mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ is the size of a maximum matching in $\mathcal{H}$. A subset $D$ of vertices of $\mathcal{H}$ is a dominating set of $\mathcal{H}$ if for every $v\in V\setminus D$ there exists $u\in D$ such that $u$ and $v$ lie in an hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$. The cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $\mathcal{H}$ is the domination number of $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $γ(\mathcal{H})$. It was proved that $γ(\mathcal{H})\leq (r-1)ν(\mathcal{H})$ for $r$-uniform hypergraphs and the 2-uniform hypergraphs (graphs) achieving equality $γ(\mathcal{H})=ν(\mathcal{H})$ have been characterized. In this paper we generalize the inequality $γ(\mathcal{H})\leq (r-1)ν(\mathcal{H})$ to arbitrary hypergraph of rank $r$ and we completely characterize the extremal hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$ of rank $3$ achieving equality $γ(\mathcal{H})=(r-1)ν(\mathcal{H})$.

Turan numbers of extensions of some sparse hypergraphs via Lagrangians
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a positive integer $n$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph (or $r$-graph for short) $F$, the Turan number $ex(n,F)$ of $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. The extension $H^F $ of $F$ is obtained as follows: For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j$ in $F$ not contained in an edge of $F$, we add a set $B_{ij}$ of $r-2$ new vertices and the edge $\{v_i,v_j\} \cup B_{ij}$, where the $B_{ij}$ 's are pairwise disjoint over all such pairs $\{i,j\}$. Let $K^r_p$ denote the complete $r$-graph on $p$ vertices. For all sufficiently large $n$, we determine the Turan numbers of the extensions of a $3$-uniform $t$-matching, a $3$-uniform linear star of size $t$, and a $4$-uniform linear star of size $t$, respectively. We also show that the unique extremal hypergraphs are balanced blowups of $K^3_{3t-1}, K^3_{2t}$, and $K^4_{3t}$, respectively. Our results generalize the recent result of Hefetz and Keevash [7].
A family of extremal hypergraphs for Ryser's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ryser's Conjecture states that for any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph, the vertex cover number is at most $r{-}1$ times the matching number. This conjecture is only known to be true for $r\leq 3$ in general and for $r\leq 5$ if the hypergraph is intersecting. There has also been considerable effort made for finding hypergraphs that are extremal for Ryser's Conjecture, i.e. $r$-partite hypergraphs whose cover number is $r-1$ times its matching number. Aside from a few sporadic examples, the set of uniformities $r$ for which Ryser's Conjecture is known to be tight is limited to those integers for which a projective plane of order $r-1$ exists. We produce a new infinite family of $r$-uniform hypergraphs extremal to Ryser's Conjecture, which exists whenever a projective plane of order $r-2$ exists. Our construction is flexible enough to produce a large number of non-isomorphic extremal hypergraphs. In particular, we define what we call the {\em Ryser poset} of extremal intersecting $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs and show that the number of maximal and minimal elements is exponential in $\sqrt{r}$. This provides further evidence for the difficulty of Ryser's Conjecture.

On a problem of Erdos and Moser
A set $A$ of vertices in an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$ is covered in $\mathcal H$ if there is some vertex $u\not\in A$ such that, for every $(r-1)$-set $B\subset A$, the set $\{u\}\cup B$ is in $\mathcal H$. Erdos and Moser (1970) determined the minimum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices such that every $k$-set is covered. We extend this result to $r$-uniform hypergraphs on sufficiently many vertices, and determine the extremal hypergraphs. We also address the problem for directed graphs.
Tight cycles and regular slices in dense hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study properties of random subcomplexes of partitions returned by (a suitable form of) the Strong Hypergraph Regularity Lemma, which we call regular slices. We argue that these subcomplexes capture many important structural properties of the original hypergraph. Accordingly we advocate their use in extremal hypergraph theory, and explain how they can lead to considerable simplifications in existing proofs in this field. We also use them for establishing the following two new results. Firstly, we prove a hypergraph extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: for every $δ>0$ every sufficiently large $k$-uniform hypergraph with at least $(α+δ)\binom{n}{k}$ edges contains a tight cycle of length $αn$ for each $α\in[0,1]$. Secondly, we find (asymptotically) the minimum codegree requirement for a $k$-uniform $k$-partite hypergraph, each of whose parts has $n$ vertices, to contain a tight cycle of length $αkn$, for each $0<α<1$.

Intersecting extremal constructions in Ryser's Conjecture for r-partite hypergraphs
Ryser's Conjecture states that for any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph the vertex cover number is at most $r-1$ times the matching number. This conjecture is only known to be true for $r\leq 3$. For intersecting hypergraphs, Ryser's Conjecture reduces to saying that the edges of every $r$-partite intersecting hypergraph can be covered by $r-1$ vertices. This special case of the conjecture has only been proven for $r \leq 5$. It is interesting to study hypergraphs which are extremal in Ryser's Conjecture i.e, those hypergraphs for which the vertex cover number is exactly $r-1$ times the matching number. There are very few known constructions of such graphs. For large $r$ the only known constructions come from projective planes and exist only when $r-1$ is a prime power. Mansour, Song and Yuster studied how few edges a hypergraph which is extremal for Ryser's Conjecture can have. They defined $f(r)$ as the minimum integer so that there exist an $r$-partite intersecting hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with $τ({\mathcal{H}}) = r -1$ and with $f(r)$ edges. They showed that $f(3) = 3, f(4) = 6$, $f(5) = 9$, and $12\leq f(6)\leq 15$. In this paper we focus on the cases when $r=6$ and 7. We show that $f(6)=13$ improving previous bounds. We also show that $f(7)\leq 22$, giving the first known extremal hypergraphs for the $r=7$ case of Ryser's Conjecture. These results have been obtained independently by Aharoni, Barat, and Wanless.

Extremal Hypergraphs for Ryser's Conjecture: Connectedness of Line Graphs of Bipartite Graphs
In this paper we consider a natural extremal graph theoretic problem of topological sort, concerning the minimization of the (topological) connectedness of the independence complex of graphs in terms of its dimension. We observe that the lower bound $\frac{\dim(\mathcal{I}(G))}{2} - 2$ on the connectedness of the independence complex $\mathcal{I}(G)$ of line graphs of bipartite graphs $G$ is tight. In our main theorem we characterize the extremal examples. Our proof of this characterization is based on topological machinery. Our motivation for studying this problem comes from a classical conjecture of Ryser. Ryser's Conjecture states that any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph has a vertex cover of size at most $(r - 1)$-times the size of the largest matching. For $r = 2$, the conjecture is simply König's Theorem. It has also been proven for $r = 3$ by Aharoni using a beautiful topological argument. In a separate paper we characterize the extremal examples for the $3$-uniform case of Ryser's Conjecture (i.e., Aharoni's Theorem), and in particular resolve an old conjecture of Lovász for the case of Ryser-extremal $3$-graphs. Our main result in this paper will provide us with valuable structural information for that characterization. Its proof is based on the observation that link graphs of Ryser-extremal $3$-uniform hypergraphs are exactly the bipartite graphs we study here.

Extremal Hypergraphs for Ryser's Conjecture: Home-Base Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ryser's Conjecture states that any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph has a vertex cover of size at most $r - 1$ times the size of the largest matching. For $r = 2$, the conjecture is simply König's Theorem and every bipartite graph is a witness for its tightness. The conjecture has also been proven for $r = 3$ by Aharoni using topological methods, but the proof does not give information on the extremal $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Our goal in this paper is to characterize those hypergraphs which are tight for Aharoni's Theorem. Our proof of this characterization is also based on topological machinery, particularly utilizing results on the (topological) connectedness of the independence complex of the line graph of the link graphs of $3$-uniform Ryser-extremal hypergraphs, developed in a separate paper. The current paper contains the second, structural hypergraph-theoretic part of the argument, where we use the information on the line graph of the link graphs to nail down the elements of a structure we call \emph{home-base hypergraph}. While there is a single minimal home-base hypergraph with matching number $k$ for every positive integer $k \in \mathbb{N}$, home-base hypergraphs with matching number $k$ are far from being unique. There are infinitely many of them and each of them is composed of $k$ copies of two different kinds of basic structures, whose hyperedges can intersect in various restricted, but intricate ways. Our characterization also proves an old and wide open strengthening of Ryser's Conjecture, due to Lovász, for the $3$-uniform extremal case, that is, for hypergraphs with $τ= 2 ν$.

Mantel's Theorem for Random Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result in extremal graph theory is Mantel's Theorem, which states that every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $K_n$ is bipartite. A sparse version of Mantel's Theorem is that, for sufficiently large $p$, every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ is w.h.p. bipartite. Recently, DeMarco and Kahn proved this for $p > K \sqrt{\log n/n}$ for some constant $K$, and apart from the value of the constant this bound is best possible. We study an extremal problem of this type in random hypergraphs. Denote by $F_5$, which sometimes called as the generalized triangle, the 3-uniform hypergraph with vertex set {a,b,c,d,e} and edge set {abc, ade, bde}. One of the first extremal results in extremal hypergraph theory is by Frankl and Füredi, who proved that the maximum 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices containing no copy of $F_5$ is tripartite for n>3000. A natural question is for what p is every maximum $F_5$-free subhypergraph of $G^3(n,p)$ w.h.p. tripartite. We show this holds for $p>K\log n/n$ for some constant K and does not hold for $p=0.1\sqrt{\log n}/n$.

Analytic methods for uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper develops analityc methods for investigating uniform hypergraphs. Its starting point is the spectral theory of 2-graphs, in particular, the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of 2-graphs. On the one hand, this simple setup is extended to weighted r-graphs, and on the other, the eigenvalues-numbers are generalized to eigenvalues-functions, which encompass also other graph parameters like Lagrangians and number of edges. The resulting theory is new even for 2-graphs, where well-settled topics become challenges again. The paper covers a multitude of topics, with more than a hundred concrete statements to underpin an analytic theory for hypergraphs. Essential among these topics are a Perron-Frobenius type theory and methods for extremal hypergraph problems. Many open problems are raised and directions for possible further research are outlined.

An analytic theory of extremal hypergraph problems
In this paper extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs are studied in the general setting of hereditary properties. It turns out that extremal problems about edges are particular cases of a general analyic problem about a recently introduced graph parameter. The paper builds a basis for the systematic study of this parameter and illustrates a range of various proof tools. It is shown that extremal problems about the number of edges of uniform hypergraphs are asymptotically equivalent to extremal problems about the largest eigenvalue; this result is new even for 2-graphs. Several concrete problems are adressed and solutions to many more are suggested. A number of open problems are raised and directions for further studies are outlined.

On an Extremal Hypergraph Problem Related to Combinatorial Batch Codes

Let $n, r, k$ be positive integers such that $3\leq k < n$ and $2\leq r \leq k-1$. Let $m(n, r, k)$ denote the maximum number of edges an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices can have under the condition that any collection of $i$ edges, span at least $i$ vertices for all $1 \leq i \leq k$. We are interested in the asymptotic nature of $m(n, r, k)$ for fixed $r$ and $k$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. This problem is related to the forbidden hypergraph problem introduced by Brown, Erdős, and Sós and very recently discussed in the context of combinatorial batch codes. In this short paper we obtain the following results. {enumerate}[(i)] Using a result due to Erdős we are able to show $m(n, k, r) = o(n^r)$ for $7\leq k$, and $3 \leq r \leq k-1-\lceil\log k \rceil$. This result is best possible with respect to the upper bound on $r$ as we subsequently show through explicit construction that for $6 \leq k$, and $k-\lceil \log k \rceil \leq r \leq k-1, m(n, r, k) = Θ(n^r)$. This explicit construction improves on the non-constructive general lower bound obtained by Brown, Erdős, and Sós for the considered parameter values. For 2-uniform CBCs we obtain the following results. {enumerate} We provide exact value of $m(n, 2, 5)$ for $n \geq 5$. Using a result of Lazebnik,et al. regarding maximum size of graphs with large girth, we improve the existing lower bound on $m(n, 2, k)$ ($Ω(n^{\frac{k+1}{k-1}})$) for all $k \geq 8$ and infinitely many values of $n$. We show $m(n, 2, k) = O(n^{1+\frac{1}{\lfloor\frac{k}{4}\rfloor}})$ by using a result due to Bondy and Simonovits, and also show $m(n, 2, k) = Θ(n^{3/2})$ for $k = 6, 7, 8$ by using a result of Kövari, Sós, and Turán.

On extremal hypergraphs for hamiltonian cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian cycles in hypergraphs, and obtain both Turán- and Dirac-type results. While the Turán-type result gives an exact threshold for the appearance of a Hamiltonian cycle in a hypergraph depending only on the extremal number of a certain path, the Dirac-type result yields a sufficient condition relying solely on the minimum vertex degree.
Hypergraphs with many Kneser colorings (Extended Version)

For fixed positive integers $r, k$ and $\ell$ with $1 \leq \ell < r$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $κ(H, k,\ell)$ denote the number of $k$-colorings of the set of hyperedges of $H$ for which any two hyperedges in the same color class intersect in at least $\ell$ elements. Consider the function $\KC(n,r,k,\ell)=\max_{H\in{\mathcal H}_{n}} κ(H, k,\ell) $, where the maximum runs over the family ${\mathcal H}_n$ of all $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the function $\KC(n,r,k,\ell)$ for every fixed $r$, $k$ and $\ell$ and describe the extremal hypergraphs. This variant of a problem of Erdős and Rothschild, who considered edge colorings of graphs without a monochromatic triangle, is related to the Erdős--Ko--Rado Theorem on intersecting systems of sets [Intersection Theorems for Systems of Finite Sets, Quarterly Journal of Mathematics, Oxford Series, Series 2, {\bf 12} (1961), 313--320].

On Extremal k-Graphs Without Repeated Copies of 2-Intersecting Edges
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 21, No. 3, 2007, pp. 805-821 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of determining extremal hypergraphs containing at most r isomorphic copies of some element of a given hypergraph family was first studied by Boros et al. in 2001. There are not many hypergraph families for which exact results are known concerning the size of the corresponding extremal hypergraphs, except for those equivalent to the classical Turan numbers. In this paper, we determine the size of extremal k-uniform hypergraphs containing at most one pair of 2-intersecting edges for k in {3,4}. We give a complete solution when k=3 and an almost complete solution (with eleven exceptions) when k=4.

On a hypergraph Turan problem of Frankl

Let $C^{2k}_r$ be the $2k$-uniform hypergraph obtained by letting $P_1,...,P_r$ be pairwise disjoint sets of size $k$ and taking as edges all sets $P_i \cup P_j$ with $i \neq j$. This can be thought of as the `$k$-expansion' of the complete graph $K_r$: each vertex has been replaced with a set of size $k$. We determine the exact Turan number of $C^{2k}_3$ and the corresponding extremal hypergraph, thus confirming a conjecture of Frankl. Sidorenko has given an upper bound of $(r-2) / (r-1)$ for the Turán density of $C^{2k}_r$ for any $r$, and a construction establishing a matching lower bound when $r$ is of the form $2^p + 1$. We show that when $r = 2^p + 1$, any $C^4_r$-free hypergraph of density $(r-2)/(r-1) - o(1)$ looks approximately like Sidorenko's construction. On the other hand, when $r$ is not of this form, we show that corresponding constructions do not exist and improve the upper bound on the Turán density of $C^4_r$ to $(r-2)/(r-1) - c(r)$, where $c(r)$ is a constant depending only on $r$. The backbone of our arguments is a strategy of first proving approximate structure theorems, and then showing that any imperfections in the structure must lead to a suboptimal configuration. The tools for its realisation draw on extremal graph theory, linear algebra, the Kruskal-Katona theorem and properties of Krawtchouck polynomials.
