Minimal external representations of tropical polyhedra
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 120, Issue 4, May 2013, Pages 907-940 • View PublicationBIB
Tropical polyhedra are known to be representable externally, as intersections of finitely many tropical half-spaces. However, unlike in the classical case, the extreme rays of their polar cones provide external representations containing in general superfluous half-spaces. In this paper, we prove that any tropical polyhedral cone in R^n (also known as "tropical polytope" in the literature) admits an essentially unique minimal external representation. The result is obtained by establishing a (partial) anti-exchange property of half-spaces. Moreover, we show that the apices of the half-spaces appearing in such non-redundant external representations are vertices of the cell complex associated with the polyhedral cone. We also establish a necessary condition for a vertex of this cell complex to be the apex of a non-redundant half-space. It is shown that this condition is sufficient for a dense class of polyhedral cones having "generic extremities".

Block characters of the symmetric groups
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 38, no. 1 (2013), 79-101 • View PublicationBIB
Block character of a finite symmetric group S(n) is a positive definite function which depends only on the number of cycles in permutation. We describe the cone of block characters by identifying its extreme rays, and find relations of the characters to descent representations and the coinvariant algebra of S(n). The decomposition of extreme block characters into the sum of characters of irreducible representations gives rise to certain limit shape theorems for random Young diagrams. We also study counterparts of the block characters for the infinite symmetric group S(\infty) along with their connection to the Thoma characters of the infinite linear group GL(\infty,q) over a Galois field.

Cones of Weighted and Partial Metrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partial semimetric on V_n={1, ..., n} is a function f=((f_{ij})): V_n^2 -> R_>=0 satisfying f_ij=f_ji >= f_ii and f_ij+f_ik-f_jk-f_ii >= 0 for all i,j,k in V_n. The function f is a weak partial semimetric if f_ij >= f_ii is dropped, and it is a strong partial semimetric if f_ij >= f_ii is complemented by f_ij <= f_ii+f_jj. We describe the cones of weak and strong partial semimetrics via corresponding weighted semimetrics and list their 0,1-valued elements, identifying when they belong to extreme rays. We consider also related cones, including those of partial hypermetrics, weighted hypermetrics, l_1-quasi semimetrics and weighted/partial cuts.
Tropical polar cones, hypergraph transversals, and mean payoff games
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 435, Issue 7, 1 October 2011, Pages 1549-1574 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss the tropical analogues of several basic questions of convex duality. In particular, the polar of a tropical polyhedral cone represents the set of linear inequalities that its elements satisfy. We characterize the extreme rays of the polar in terms of certain minimal set covers which may be thought of as weighted generalizations of minimal transversals in hypergraphs. We also give a tropical analogue of Farkas lemma, which allows one to check whether a linear inequality is implied by a finite family of linear inequalities. Here, the certificate is a strategy of a mean payoff game. We discuss examples, showing that the number of extreme rays of the polar of the tropical cyclic polyhedral cone is polynomially bounded, and that there is no unique minimal system of inequalities defining a given tropical polyhedral cone.
Cones of closed alternating walks and trails

Consider a graph whose edges have been colored red and blue. Assign a nonnegative real weight to every edge so that at every vertex, the sum of the weights of the incident red edges equals the sum of the weights of the incident blue edges. The set of all such assignments forms a convex polyhedral cone in the edge space, called the \emph{alternating cone}. The integral (respectively, $\{0,1\}$) vectors in the alternating cone are sums of characteristic vectors of closed alternating walks (respectively, trails). We study the basic properties of the alternating cone, determine its dimension and extreme rays, and relate its dimension to the majorization order on degree sequences. We consider whether the alternating cone has integral vectors in a given box, and use residual graph techniques to reduce this problem to searching for a closed alternating trail through a given edge. The latter problem, called alternating reachability, is solved in a companion paper along with related results.

Adjacency method for extreme Delaunay polytopes
The {\em hypermetric cone} is defined as the cone of semimetrics satisfying the {\em hypermetric inequalities}. Every {\em Delaunay polytope} corresponds to a ray of this polyhedral cone. The Delaunay polytopes, which correspond to extreme rays are called {\em extreme}. We use this polyhedral cone and the {\em closest vector problem} to present a new technique that allow to find, from a given extreme Delaunay polytope, some new ones. Then, we show some examples of applications of this technique in low-dimensions.

On the Computation of Hilbert Bases and Extreme Rays of Cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a novel project-and-lift approach to compute the set of minimal generators of the semigroup $(Λ\cap\R^n_+,+)$ for lattices $Λ\subseteq\Z^n$. This problem class includes the computation of Hilbert bases of cones $\{z:Az=0,z\in\R^n_+\}$ for integer matrices $A$. A similar approach can be used to compute only the extreme rays of such cones. Finally, some combinatorial applications and computational experience are presented.

Computational methods for cones and polytopes with symmetry
Every polyhedral cone can be described either by its facets or by its extreme rays. Computation of one description from the other is a problem that can be very complex, i.e. one encounter the combinatorial explosion. We present here several methods which allow us to use symmetries for the computation of extreme rays and facets of cones. I give an algorithm for computing adjacencies using a linear programming approach. I give a complete description of the method of incidence, adjacency decomposition method and of the subcone method used for computing with symmetric cones.

Data mining for cones of metrics, quasi-metrics, hemi-metrics and super-metrics
Using some adaptations of the adjacency decomposition method \cite{CR} and the program {\it cdd} (~\cite{Fu}), we compute the first computationally difficult cases of convex cones of $m$-ary and oriented analogs of semi-metrics and cut semi-metrics, which were introduced in \cite{DR2} and \cite{DP}. We considered also more general notion of $(m,s)$-super-metric and corresponding cones. The data on related cones - the number of facets, of extreme rays, of their orbits and diameters - are collected in Table \ref{tab:MainLovelyTable}. We study also criterion of adjacency for skeletons of those cones and their duals. Some families of extreme rays and operations on them are also given.

Small cones of oriented semi-metrics

We consider polyhedral cones, associated with quasi-semi-metrics (oriented distances), in particular, with oriented multi-cuts, on n points. We computed the number of facets and of extreme rays, their adjacencies, and incidences of the cones QMET_n and OMCUT_n for n=3, 4, 5 (see Table 1) and, partially for n=6. Some results for general n are also given

Flag vectors of Eulerian partially ordered sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The closed cone of flag vectors of Eulerian partially ordered sets is studied. It is completely determined up through rank seven. Half-Eulerian posets are defined. Certain limit posets of Billera and Hetyei are half-Eulerian; they give rise to extreme rays of the cone for Eulerian posets. A new family of linear inequalities valid for flag vectors of Eulerian posets is given.
