Implementing Line-Hermitian Grassmann codes
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 580 (2019), 96-120 • View PublicationBIB
In [I. Cardinali and L. Giuzzi. Line Hermitian Grassmann codes and their parameters. Finite Fields Appl., 51: 407-432, 2018] we introduced line Hermitian Grassmann codes and determined their parameters. The aim of this paper is to present (in the spirit of [I. Cardinali and L. Giuzzi. Enumerative coding for line polar Grassmannians with applications to codes. Finite Fields Appl., 46:107-138, 2017]) an algorithm for the point enumerator of a line Hermitian Grassmannian which can be usefully applied to get efficient encoders, decoders and error correction algorithms for the aforementioned codes.

Double Character Sums with Intervals and Arbitrary Sets in Finite Fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a new bound on certain double sums of multiplicative characters improving the range of several previous results. This improvement comes from new bounds on the number of collinear triples in finite fields, which is a classical object of study of additive combinatorics.

The Graph Structure of Chebyshev Polynomials over Finite Fields and Applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We completely describe the functional graph associated to iterations of Chebyshev polynomials over finite fields. Then, we use our structural results to obtain estimates for the average rho length, average number of connected components and the expected value for the period and preperiod of iterating Chebyshev polynomials.

Matroids and Codes with the Rank Metric
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the relationship between a q-analogue of matroids and linear codes with the rank metric in the vector space of matrices with entries in a finite field. We prove a Greene type identity for the rank generating function of these matroidal structures and the rank weight enumerator of these linear codes. As an application, we give a combinatorial proof of a MacWilliams type identity for Delsarte rank-metric codes.

Quadratic and symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields and their association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ be the sets of quadratic forms and symmetric bilinear forms on an $m$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$, respectively. The orbits of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ and $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ under a natural group action induce two translation association schemes, which are known to be dual to each other. We give explicit expressions for the eigenvalues of these association schemes in terms of linear combinations of generalised Krawtchouk polynomials, generalising earlier results for odd $q$ to the more difficult case when $q$ is even. We then study $d$-codes in these schemes, namely subsets $X$ of $\mathscr{Q}(m,q)$ or $\mathscr{S}(m,q)$ with the property that, for all distinct $A,B\in X$, the rank of $A-B$ is at least $d$. We prove tight bounds on the size of $d$-codes and show that, when these bounds hold with equality, the inner distributions of the subsets are often uniquely determined by their parameters. We also discuss connections to classical error-correcting codes and show how the Hamming distance distribution of large classes of codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can be determined from the results of this paper.

Maximum Weight Spectrum Codes
Published in Adv. Math. Commun. 13 (2019), no. 1, 101-119 • View PublicationBIB
In the recent work \cite{shi18}, a combinatorial problem concerning linear codes over a finite field $\F_q$ was introduced. In that work the authors studied the weight set of an $[n,k]_q$ linear code, that is the set of non-zero distinct Hamming weights, showing that its cardinality is upper bounded by $\frac{q^k-1}{q-1}$. They showed that this bound was sharp in the case $ q=2 $, and in the case $ k=2 $. They conjectured that the bound is sharp for every prime power $ q $ and every positive integer $ k $. In this work quickly establish the truth of this conjecture. We provide two proofs, each employing different construction techniques. The first relies on the geometric view of linear codes as systems of projective points. The second approach is purely algebraic. We establish some lower bounds on the length of codes that satisfy the conjecture, and the length of the new codes constructed here are discussed.

On the quotient set of the distance set

Let ${\Bbb F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q.$ We prove that if $d\ge 2$ is even and $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$ with $|E| \ge 9q^{\frac{d}{2}}$ then $$ {\Bbb F}_q=\frac{Δ(E)}{Δ(E)}=\left\{ \frac{a}{b}: a \in Δ(E), b \in Δ(E) \backslash \{0\} \right\},$$ where $$ Δ(E)=\{||x-y||: x,y \in E\}, \ ||x||=x_1^2+x_2^2+\cdots+x_d^2.$$ If the dimension $d$ is odd and $E\subset \mathbb F_q^d$ with $|E|\ge 6q^{\frac{d}{2}},$ then $$ \{0\}\cup\mathbb F_q^+ \subset \frac{Δ(E)}{Δ(E)},$$ where $\mathbb F_q^+$ denotes the set of nonzero quadratic residues in $\mathbb F_q.$ Both results are, in general, best possible, including the conclusion about the nonzero quadratic residues in odd dimensions.

Embedding distance graphs in finite field vector spaces
We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields determine certain point configurations with prescribed distance structure. More specifically, we consider the complete graph with vertices as the points of $A \subseteq \mathbf{F}_q^d$ and edges assigned the algebraic distance between pairs of vertices. We prove nontrivial results on locating specified subgraphs of maximum vertex degree at most $t$ in dimensions $d \geq 2t$.

On ranks of polynomials

Let $V$ be a vector space over a field $k, P:V\to k, d\geq 3$. We show the existence of a function $C(r,d)$ such that $rank (P)\leq C(r,d)$ for any field $k,char (k)>d$, a finite-dimensional $k$-vector space $V$ and a polynomial $P:V\to k$ of degree $d$ such that $rank(\partial P/\partial t)\leq r$ for all $t\in V-0$. Our proof of this theorem is based on the application of results on Gowers norms for finite fields $k$. We don't know a direct proof in the case when $k=\mathbb C$.

A bijection between necklaces and multisets with divisible subset sum
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 26(1)(2019), #P1.37 • View PublicationBIB
Consider these two distinct combinatorial objects: (1) the necklaces of length $n$ with at most $q$ colors, and (2) the multisets of integers modulo $n$ with subset sum divisible by $n$ and with the multiplicity of each element being strictly less than $q$. We show that these two objects have the same cardinality when $q$ and $n$ are mutually coprime. Additionally, when $q$ is a prime power, we construct a bijection between these two objects by viewing necklaces as cyclic polynomials over the finite field of size $q$. Specializing to $q=2$ answers a bijective problem posed by Richard Stanley.

Let $P_1,\dots,P_m\in\mathbb{Z}[y]$ be any linearly independent polynomials with zero constant term. We show that there exists a $γ>0$ such that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_q$ of size at least $q^{1-γ}$ contains a nontrivial polynomial progression $x,x+P_1(y),\dots,x+P_m(y)$, provided the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}_q$ is large enough.

Skew Hadamard difference families and skew Hadamard matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we generalize classical constructions of skew Hadamard difference families with two or four blocks in the additive groups of finite fields given by Szekeres (1969, 1971), Whiteman (1971) and Wallis-Whiteman (1972). In particular, we show that there exists a skew Hadamard difference family with $2^{u-1}$ blocks in the additive group of the finite field of order $q^e$ for any prime power $q\equiv 2^u+1\,({\mathrm{mod\, \, }2^{u+1}})$ with $u\ge 2$ and any positive integer $e$. In the aforementioned work of Szekeres, Whiteman, and Wallis-Whiteman, the constructions of skew Hadamard difference families with $2^{u-1}$ ($u=2$ or $3$) blocks in $({\mathbb F}_{q^e},+)$ depend on the exponent $e$, with $e\equiv 1,2,$ or $3\,({\mathrm{mod\, \, }4})$ when $u=2$, and $e\equiv 1\,({\mathrm{mod\, \, }2})$ when $u=3$, respectively. Our more general construction, in particular, removes the dependence on $e$. As a consequence, we obtain new infinite families of skew Hadamard matrices.

Connections between rank and dimension for subspaces of bilinear forms
Let $K$ be a field and let $V$ be a vector space of dimension $n$ over $K$. Let $M$ be a subspace of bilinear forms defined on $V\times V$. Let $r$ be the number of different non-zero ranks that occur among the elements of $M$. Our aim is to obtain an upper bound for $\dim M$ in terms of $r$ and $n$ under various hypotheses. As a sample of what we prove, we mention the following. Suppose that $m$ is the largest integer that occurs as the rank of an element of $M$. Then if $m\leq \lceil n/2\rceil$ and $|K|\geq m+1$, we have $\dim M\leq rn$. The case $r=1$ corresponds to a constant rank space and it is conjectured that $\dim M\leq n$ when $M$ is a constant rank $m$ space and $|K|\geq m+1$. We prove that the dimension bound for a constant rank $m$ space $M$ holds provided $|K|\geq m+1$ and either $K$ is finite or $K$ has characteristic different from 2 and $M$ consists of symmetric forms. In general, we show that if $M$ is a constant rank $m$ subspace and $|K|\geq m+1$, then $\dim M\leq \max\,(n,2m-1)$. We also provide more detailed results about constant rank subspaces over finite fields, especially subspaces of alternating or symmetric bilinear forms.
Closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over Galois fields
Published in Journal Algebraic Combinatorics 50(1) (2019) 73-98 • View PublicationBIB
Exponential sums have applications to a variety of scientific fields, including, but not limited to, cryptography, coding theory and information theory. Closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric Boolean functions were found by Cai, Green and Thierauf in the late 1990's. Their closed formulas imply that these exponential sums are linear recursive. The linear recursivity of these sums has been exploited in numerous papers and has been used to compute the asymptotic behavior of such sequences. In this article, we extend the result of Cai, Green and Thierauf, that is, we find closed formulas for exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over any Galois fields. Our result also implies that the recursive nature of these sequences is not unique to the binary field, as they are also linear recursive over any finite field. In fact, we provide explicit linear recurrences with integer coefficients for such sequences. As a byproduct of our results, we discover a link between exponential sums of symmetric polynomials over Galois fields and a problem for multinomial coefficients which similar to the problem of bisecting binomial coefficients.

New families of Hadamard matrices with maximum excess
In this paper, we find regular or biregular Hadamard matrices with maximum excess by negating some rows and columns of known Hadamard matrices obtained from quadratic residues of finite fields. In particular, we show that if either $4m^2+4m+3$ or $2m^2+2m+1$ is a prime power, then there exists a biregular Hadamard matrix of order $n=4(m^2+m+1)$ with maximum excess. Furthermore, we give a sufficient condition for Hadamard matrices obtained from quadratic residues being transformed to be regular in terms of four-class translation association schemes on finite fields.

Polynomial functions as splines

Let $V$ be a vector space over a finite field $k$. We give a condition on a subset $A \subset V$ that allows for a local criterion for checking when a function $f:A \to k$ is a restriction of a polynomial function of degree $<m$ on $V$. In particular, we show that high rank hypersurfaces of $V$ of degree $\ge m$ satisfy this condition. In addition we show that the criterion is robust (namely locally testable in the theoretical computer science jargon).

On the arithmetic Kakeya conjecture of Katz and Tao
Published • View PublicationBIB
The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture, formulated by Katz and Tao in 2002, is a statement about addition of finite sets. It is known to imply a form of the Kakeya conjecture, namely that the upper Minkowski dimension of a Besicovitch set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is $n$. In this note we discuss this conjecture, giving a number of equivalent forms of it. We show that a natural finite field variant of it does hold. We also give some lower bounds.

The algebraic geometry of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kazhdan-Lusztig-Stanley polynomials are a combinatorial generalization of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of for Coxeter groups that include g-polynomials of polytopes and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids. In the cases of Weyl groups, rational polytopes, and realizable matroids, one can count points over finite fields on flag varieties, toric varieties, or reciprocal planes to obtain cohomological interpretations of these polynomials. We survey these results and unite them under a single geometric framework.
