Dynamical systems on graphs through the signless Laplacian matrix

There is a deep and interesting connection between the topological properties of a graph and the behaviour of the dynamical system defined on it. We analyse various kind of graphs, with different contrasting connectivity or degree characteristics, using the signless Laplacian matrix. We expose the theoretical results about the eigenvalue of the matrix and how they are related to the dynamical system. Then, we perform numerical computations on real-like graphs and observe the resulting system. Comparing the theoretical and numerical results we found a perfect consistency. Furthermore, we define a metric which takes in account the "rigidity" of the graph and enables us to relate all together the topological properties of the graph, the signless Laplacian matrix and the dynamical system.

Consider a positive integer $r$ and a graph $G=(V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$ and without isolated edges. The least $k$ so that a proper edge colouring $c:E\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ exists such that $\sum_{e\ni u}c(e)\neq \sum_{e\ni v}c(e)$ for every pair of distinct vertices $u,v$ at distance at most $r$ in $G$ is denoted by $χ'_{Σ,r}(G)$. For $r=1$ it has been proved that $χ'_{Σ,1}(G)=(1+o(1))Δ$. For any $r\geq 2$ in turn an infinite family of graphs is known with $χ'_{Σ,r}(G)=Ω(Δ^{r-1})$. We prove that on the other hand, $χ'_{Σ,r}(G)=O(Δ^{r-1})$ for $r\geq 2$. In particular we show that $χ'_{Σ,r}(G)\leq 6Δ^{r-1}$ if $r\geq 4$.

There are many results asserting the existence of tree-decompositions of minimal width which still represent local connectivity properties of the underlying graph, perhaps the best-known being Thomas' theorem that proves for every graph $G$ the existence of a linked tree-decompositon of width tw$(G)$. We prove a general theorem on the existence of linked and lean tree-decompositions, providing a unifying proof of many known results in the field, as well as implying some new results. In particular we prove that every matroid $M$ admits a lean tree-decomposition of width tw$(M)$, generalizing the result of Thomas.

Motivated by the problem of determining unknotted routes for the scaffolding strand in DNA origami self-assembly, we examine existence and knottedness of A-trails in graphs embedded on the torus. We show that any A-trail in a checkerboard-colorable torus graph is unknotted and characterize the existence of A-trails in checkerboard-colorable torus graphs in terms of pairs of quasitrees in associated embeddings. Surface meshes are frequent targets for DNA nanostructure self-assembly, and so we study both triangular and rectangular torus grids. We show that, aside from one exceptional family, a triangular torus grid contains an A-trail if and only if it has an odd number of vertices, and that such an A-trail is necessarily unknotted. On the other hand, while every rectangular torus grid contains an unknotted A-trail, we also show that any torus knot can be realized as an A-trail in some rectangular grid. Lastly, we use a gluing operation to construct infinite families of triangular and rectangular grids containing unknotted A-trails on surfaces of arbitrary genus. We also give infinite families of triangular grids containing no unknotted A-trail on surfaces of arbitrary nonzero genus.

In this paper, we define the $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of a graph $G$ as the minimum number of planar subgraphs of girth at least $4$ whose union is $G$. We obtain the $4$-girth-thickness of the arbitrary complete graph $K_n$ getting that $θ(4,K_n)=\left\lceil \frac{n+2}{4}\right\rceil$ for $n\not=6,10$ and $θ(4,K_6)=3$.

In this work, we establish an analogue result of the Erdös-Stone theorem of weighted digraphs using Regularity Lemma of digraphs. We give a stability result of oriented graphs and digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle and show that almost all oriented graphs and almost all digraphs with forbidden blow-up transitive triangle are almost bipartite respectively.
On Hamilton Cycle Decompositions of Tensor Products of Graphs
A Hamiltonian decomposition of $G$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. Manikandan and Paulraja conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graphs with at least one of them is nonbipartite, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In this paper, we have proved that, if $G$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graph with certain properties and $H$ is a Hamilton cycle decomposable multigraph, then their tensor product is Hamilton cycle decomposable. In particular, tensor products of certain sparse Hamilton cycle decomposable circulant graphs are Hamilton cycle decomposable.
Lower Bounds on Nonnegative Signed Domination Parameters in Graphs
Let $1 \leq k \leq n$ be a positive integer. A {\em nonnegative signed $k$-subdominating function} is a function $f:V(G) \rightarrow \{-1,1\}$ satisfying $\sum_{u\in N_G[v]}f(u) \geq 0$ for at least $k$ vertices $v$ of $G$. The value $\min\sum_{v\in V(G)} f(v)$, taking over all nonnegative signed $k$-subdominating functions $f$ of $G$, is called the {\em nonnegative signed $k$-subdomination number} of $G$ and denoted by $γ^{NN}_{ks}(G)$. When $k=|V(G)|$, $γ^{NN}_{ks}(G)=γ^{NN}_s(G)$ is the {\em nonnegative signed domination number}, introduced in \cite{HLFZ}. In this paper, we investigate several sharp lower bounds of $γ^{NN}_s(G)$, which extend some presented lower bounds on $γ^{NN}_s(G)$. We also initiate the study of the nonnegative signed $k$-subdomination number in graphs and establish some sharp lower bounds for $γ^{NN}_{ks}(G)$ in terms of order and the degree sequence of a graph $G$.
Preorder Construct on Simple Undirected Graphs
We construct a novel preorder on the set of nodes of a simple undirected graph. We prove that the preorder (induced by the topology of the graph) is preserved, e.g., by the logistic dynamical system (both in discrete and continuous time). Moreover, the underlying equivalence relation of the preorder corresponds to the coarsest equitable partition (CEP). This will further imply that the logistic dynamical system on a graph preserves its coarsest equitable partition. The results provide a nontrivial invariant set for the logistic and the like dynamical systems, as we show. We note that our construct provides a functional characterization for the CEP as an alternative to the pure set theoretical iterated degree sequences characterization. The construct and results presented might have independent interest for analysis on graphs or qualitative analysis of dynamical systems over networks.

We introduce the concept of low rank-width colorings, generalising the notion of low tree-depth colorings introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez in [Grad and classes with bounded expansion I. Decompositions. EJC, 2008]. We say that a class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs admits low rank-width colourings if there exist functions $N\colon \mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$ and $Q\colon \mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$ such that for all $p\in \mathbb{N}$, every graph $G\in \mathcal{C}$ can be vertex colored with at most $N(p)$ colors such that the union of any $i\leq p$ color classes induces a subgraph of rank-width at most $Q(i)$.
Graph classes admitting low rank-width colorings strictly generalize graph classes admitting low tree-depth colorings and graph classes of bounded rank-width. We prove that for every graph class $\mathcal{C}$ of bounded expansion and every positive integer $r$, the class $\{G^r\colon G\in \mathcal{C}\}$ of $r$th powers of graphs from $\mathcal{C}$, as well as the classes of unit interval graphs and bipartite permutation graphs admit low rank-width colorings. All of these classes have unbounded rank-width and do not admit low tree-depth colorings. We also show that the classes of interval graphs and permutation graphs do not admit low rank-width colorings. As interesting side properties, we prove that every graph class admitting low rank-width colorings has the Erdős-Hajnal property and is $χ$-bounded.

Given a partition ${\mathcal V}=(V_1, \ldots,V_m)$ of the vertex set of a graph $G$, an {\em independent transversal} (IT) is an independent set in $G$ that contains one vertex from each $V_i$. A {\em fractional IT} is a non-negative real valued function on $V(G)$ that represents each part with total weight at least $1$, and belongs as a vector to the convex hull of the incidence vectors of independent sets in the graph. It is known that if the domination number of the graph induced on the union of every $k$ parts $V_i$ is at least $k$, then there is a fractional IT. We prove a weighted version of this result. This is a special case of a general conjecture, on the weighted version of a duality phenomenon, between independence and domination in pairs of graphs.
Laplacian, on the graph of the Weierstrass function
The Laplacian plays a major role in the mathematical analysis of partial differential equations. Recently, the work of J. Kigami, taken up by R. S. Strichartz, allowed the construction of an operator of the same nature, defined locally, on graphs having a fractal character: the triangle of Sierpinski, the carpet of Sierpinski, the diamond fractal, the Julia sets, the fern of Barnsley.
Strangely, the case of the graph of the Weierstrass function, introduced in 1872 by K. Weierstrass, which presents self similarity properties, does not seem to have been considered anywhere. It is yet an obligatory passage, in the perspective of studying diffusion phenomena in irregular structures.
We have asked ourselves the following question: given a continuous function u on the graph of the Weierstrass function, under which conditions is it possible to associate to u a function Delta u which is, in the weak sense, its Laplacian ?
We present, in the following, the results obtained by following the approach of J. Kigami and R. S. Strichartz. Ours is made in a completely renewed framework, as regards, the one, affine, of the Sierpinski gasket. First, we concentrate on Dirichlet forms, on the graph of the Weierstrass function, which enable us the, subject to its existence, to define the Laplacian of a continuous function on this graph. This Laplacian appears as the renormalized limit of a sequence of discrete Laplacians on a sequence of graphs which converge to the one of the Weierstrass function. The normalization constants related to each graph Laplacian are obtained thanks Dirichlet forms. The spectrum of the Laplacian thus built is obtained through spectral decimation.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the Max $κ$-cut on a family of sparse, inhomogeneous random graphs. In the large degree limit, the leading term is a variational problem, involving the ground state of a constrained inhomogeneous Potts spin glass. We derive a Parisi type formula for the free energy of this model, with possible constraints on the proportions, and derive the limiting ground state energy by a suitable zero temperature limit.

Let $D$ be a connected oriented graph. A set $S \subseteq V(D)$ is convex in $D$ if, for every pair of vertices $x, y \in S$, the vertex set of every $xy$-geodesic, ($xy$ shortest directed path) and every $yx$-geodesic in $D$ is contained in $S$. The convexity number, ${\rm con}(D)$, of a non-trivial oriented graph, $D$, is the maximum cardinality of a proper convex set of $D$. The strong convexity spectrum of the graph $G$, $S_{SC} (G)$, is the set $\{{ \rm con}(D) \colon\ D {\rm \ is \ a \ strong \ orientation \ of \ } G \}$. In this paper we prove that the problem of determining the convexity number of an oriented graph is $\mathcal{NP}$-complete, even for bipartite oriented graphs of arbitrary large girth, extending previous known results for graphs. We also determine $S_{SC} (P_n \Box P_m)$, for every pair of integers $n,m \ge 2$.
Spectral Bounds for the Connectivity of Regular Graphs with Given Order

The second-largest eigenvalue and second-smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph are measures of its connectivity. These eigenvalues can be used to analyze the robustness, resilience, and synchronizability of networks, and are related to connectivity attributes such as the vertex- and edge-connectivity, isoperimetric number, and characteristic path length. In this paper, we present two upper bounds for the second-largest eigenvalues of regular graphs and multigraphs of a given order which guarantee a desired vertex- or edge-connectivity. The given bounds are in terms of the order and degree of the graphs, and hold with equality for infinite families of graphs. These results answer a question of Mohar.

Consider a graph $G=(V,E)$ without isolated edges and with maximum degree $Δ$. Given a colouring $c:E\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, the weighted degree of a vertex $v\in V$ is the sum of its incident colours, i.e., $\sum_{e\ni v}c(e)$. For any integer $r\geq 2$, the least $k$ admitting the existence of such $c$ attributing distinct weighted degrees to any two different vertices at distance at most $r$ in $G$ is called the $r$-distant irregularity strength of $G$ and denoted by $s_r(G)$. This graph invariant provides a natural link between the well known 1--2--3 Conjecture and irregularity strength of graphs. In this paper we apply the probabilistic method in order to prove an upper bound $s_r(G)\leq (4+o(1))Δ^{r-1}$ for graphs with minimum degree $δ\geq \ln^8Δ$, improving thus far best upper bound $s_r(G)\leq 6Δ^{r-1}$.
The $(p,q)$ property in families of $d$-intervals and $d$-trees
Given integers $p\ge q>1$, a family of sets satisfies the $(p,q)$ property if among any $p$ members of it some $q$ intersect. We prove that for any fixed integer constants $p\ge q>1$, a family of $d$-intervals satisfying the $(p,q)$ property can be pierced by $O(d^{\frac{q}{q-1}})$ points, with constants depending only on $p$ and $q$. This extends results of Tardos, Kaiser and Alon for the case $q=2$, and of Kaiser and Rabinovich for the case $p=q=\lceil log_2(d+2) \rceil$. We further show that similar bounds hold in families of subgraphs of a tree or a graph of bounded tree-width, each consisting of at most $d$ connected components, extending results of Alon for the case $q=2$. Finally, we prove an upper bound of $O(d^{\frac{1}{p-1}})$ on the fractional piercing number in families of $d$-intervals satisfying the $(p,p)$ property, and show that this bound is asymptotically sharp.
Maximizing the number of vertices of an N-clique cover of the edges of a graph on N vertices
All the work made so far on edge-covering a graph by cliques focus on finding the minimum number of cliques that cover the graph. On this paper, we fix the number of cliques that cover a graph by the same number of vertices that the graph has, and give an upper bound for the sum of the number of vertices of these cliques in the cases where this covering is possible.

DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring introduced recently by Dvořák and Postle. We prove that for every $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)$ is "close" to $n$, the DP-chromatic number of $G$ equals $χ(G)$. "Close" here means $χ(G)\geq n-O(\sqrt{n})$, and we also show that this lower bound is best possible (up to the constant factor in front of $\sqrt{n}$), in contrast to the case of list coloring.
On Exchange Spectra of Valued Cluster Quivers and Cluster Algebras

Inspirited by the importance of the spectral theory of graphs, we introduce the spectral theory of valued cluster quiver of a cluster algebra. Our aim is to characterize a cluster algebra via its spectrum so as to use the spectral theory as a tool.
First, we give the relations between exchange spectrum of a valued cluster quiver and adjacency spectrum of its underlying valued graph, and between exchange spectra of a valued cluster quiver and its full valued subquivers. The key point is to find some invariants from the spectrum theory under mutations of cluster algebras, which is the second part we discuss. We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a cluster quiver and its mutation to be cospectral. Following this discussion, the so-called cospectral subalgebra of a cluster algebra is introduced. We study bounds of exchange spectrum radii of cluster quivers and give a characterization of $2$-maximal cluster quivers via the classification of oriented graphs of its mutation equivalence. Finally, as an application of this result, we obtain that the preprojective algebra of a cluster quiver of Dynkin type is representation-finite if and only if the cluster quiver is $2$-maximal.
